00:00Everything up here is considered legal.
00:02This is good right here.
00:03Jimmy, you know what time it is.
00:04It's for the WBA title.
00:05You can fight hard, fight clean, touch them up.
00:08Tonight we spoke about the Bray brothers upping the competition for each other.
00:14Angel Barrientes, his brother Chavez already fought this evening and won by knockout.
00:19Angel has a chance here to up that and compete here for the WBA Continental Superbantamweight title.
00:27This is our co-main event of the evening.
00:31Let's get it started.
00:33Karan Bhatia on the call, joined by Michael Woods and Justin Goosen-Brown.
00:37Angel Barrientes in the black and white trunks.
00:41Jorge Romero is in the blue and red trunks.
00:46Guys, this one is scheduled for 10.
00:48We have two motivated men here in the ring.
00:53Yeah, Michael, I believe Romero's belt line is a touch higher,
00:57so shots on the belt might not be considered low blow today.
01:01He's got those pulled up very high.
01:03You know what that tells me if I'm on the other side?
01:05That's where I'm aiming.
01:08Well, you see right away Barrientes is using his reach as we predicted.
01:12And Romero's not quite sane.
01:15In the fighter meetings yesterday, he said from the first bell he'll be on him.
01:18But as Barrientes said, it's going to be a lot harder than he thinks it is.
01:22Romero has been out of boxing for two years
01:24because he felt like promoters were not giving an opportunity, right?
01:29There's too much downside there, not enough upside,
01:32because Romero is an experienced, dangerous fighter.
01:34And I'm going to go back to the theme.
01:36We've said every fight tonight, youth versus experience.
01:39We're getting that here again in our co-main event.
01:41Well, yeah, his last fight was a loss, you know?
01:46And then it leads me to question, two years off?
01:50That's a long time.
01:52You coming back better?
01:53You coming back refreshed?
01:55Really?
01:55Or, you know, I don't know.
01:58I'm not a mind reader.
01:59He had a really good vibe in the meetings.
02:00But then I ask myself, is he trying to convince himself and us, right?
02:07You can't read minds, but honestly, that happens sometime,
02:10and we'll see how it plays out.
02:12Yeah, and Barrientes landed a good, long, unconventional right,
02:17kind of looping right hand of the body.
02:19It's hard to get it.
02:20Not many fighters could do that from that distance, but, yes, he was still active.
02:24There's a left hand to the body, right hand by Angel Barrientes.
02:27There's a speed advantage, the reach advantage on display here
02:32for Angel Barrientes in round one.
02:34Question, you guys.
02:35Word on the street is Angel or Chavez the better Barrientes.
02:39Does anyone, I mean, come on, I know I'm being a little out of the limb there,
02:42but the way he ripped that left hook there, I really dig that.
02:46Well, I'll tell you this.
02:47Angel has faced more adversity.
02:49He got stopped earlier, and maybe he's had to kind of rethink his game
02:53and really have to work hard.
02:54But you see, once again, that length is great.
02:58And I think Angel is known for working behind the long jab.
03:01Chavez is known as the better inside fighter,
03:03and Chavez got a knockout win earlier on this card.
03:07There's some lightning-fast body shots from Romero,
03:10and Angel took those well.
03:11So far, so good.
03:18I'm liking Barrientes.
03:19I'm liking his energy.
03:21I'm liking his movement, his mobility.
03:23He seems light in his feet.
03:24Hand speed seems pretty good.
03:26So far, so good.
03:26And that brings us to the end of round one in our co-feature,
03:34and was not a feeling out round by any means.
03:37And both fighters had their moments there.
03:40And I think to what we were talking about,
03:42Romero feels like he's an avoided fighter, right?
03:46He's been staying active in TCL.
03:48He's been a broadcaster in Spanish for DAZN.
03:50So he's been close to the game.
03:52He's stayed active.
03:53He's stayed ready.
03:53He's been waiting for a call like this.
03:55That's true.
03:56It's not as if he's just doing nothing.
03:58The guy works, and he calls fights for DAZN.
04:00He was very well-spoken with us.
04:03I guess my question is, like, you came off a loss.
04:05I don't know what fights you were expecting to get.
04:07So, anyway, he can prove it,
04:09and he can shut me and everyone else up tonight.
04:12So far, it looks like we got a skill set disadvantage here.
04:16Barrientes is a young, touted prospect,
04:19and kind of looks like it as compared to Romero.
04:22Yeah, and Barrientes did some great work from the outside,
04:26which we expected him to do.
04:27Now, I will say, going back to that point you said,
04:30both the brothers can really fight.
04:32This one just seems a little bit looser tonight.
04:35He seems a little bit more relaxed,
04:36and he's in a real tough test, and I like to see that.
04:39Yeah, I see maybe more of a fluidity and such
04:42than in the brother who seemed a little tighter, as we know.
04:45Yeah, and Romero is playing the role of motivated underdog here.
04:49He said he feels like the Barrientes camp.
04:51They want Romero's record, you know, want that on his resume.
04:55For Barrientes to say, hey, I took on a fighter who had a lot of fights,
04:58who's been in experience, who's knocked people out before,
05:00and Romero has knocked people out to the body.
05:03He's had a lot of experience, and so this is a test for Barrientes.
05:06Romero's corner told him, they said,
05:08don't get yourself chewed up by this guy.
05:10Come out and be more aggressive.
05:11He did start that way this round, and the first minute of the round,
05:14so far so good with his extra aggression versus Barrientes in this round.
05:19That can turn on you real quick, though.
05:21You know, this Barrientes is a little bit of a bomber,
05:23and so we'll see if he can keep this up, Romero.
05:27And remember, Barrientes did face one loss in his career.
05:30He was dropped.
05:31He did get up, but the referee did wave it off in that fight,
05:33so he's learned from that experience, and, you know, he's a young fighter.
05:38He's gaining experience, but he feels like he's in a much better place now at 22.
05:41Yeah, well, he was just a baby in the game when that happened,
05:44but he got caught in a position that he'll tell you he should have never been,
05:48and his hands were down, and his chin was straight up in the air,
05:50and tonight he's looking, obviously, way better.
05:53He's experienced, and we'll see how he can keep this pace up tonight
05:57going against an all-action pressure fighter, Romero.
06:00I like how he's handling Romero coming forward.
06:02He's sliding laterally, right, not going straight back.
06:05He's not getting flustered, and there you go.
06:07Big right hand.
06:08He's handling this very well in this round.
06:11Doing a great job keeping that long left hook out,
06:13and, you know, if you're Romero's corner, you could tell the referee,
06:18say, hey, don't let him leave it out like that,
06:20but you take advantage of it while you can if you are Barrientes.
06:23One minute to go in round two.
06:31Quick pace here.
06:32Big right hand for Angel Barrientes.
06:35Partially blocked, but speed on display.
06:38Romero with a nice combination on the inside.
06:42He's making a case for winning this round, actually.
06:44Let's see how it finishes up, but Romero, nice and decent work here.
06:48Yes, but even on the inside, that was interesting.
06:51Angel decided to kind of stand his ground in the middle of the ring on the inside,
06:54and when he does get is able to get that little bit of distance,
06:56that's when he really goes to work with those whooppy arms.
06:59Right hand for Angel Barrientes, and again.
07:11And one thing we're seeing from Barrientes,
07:13he's laying in combinations, and then he's moving quickly, right,
07:15getting out of the way from the attack,
07:18and that's some great footwork from Angel Barrientes on display here.
07:22We've been speaking about the Barrientes twins,
07:26and we mentioned that Angel Barrientes has a twin brother.
07:29He's a young, undefeated fighter, Chavez Barrientes,
07:33and Chavez was in action earlier tonight.
07:36These two Barrientes twins have been showcased here at Carribe Royale,
07:40and there is Chavez watching his brother.
07:44He approved to 12-0, got his seventh knockout,
07:47and Chavez told us in our meetings this week, he said,
07:50hey, I'm looking forward to doing my business, then I can relax,
07:52and let's take a look at some of the handiwork from Chavez Barrientes earlier tonight.
07:56Yeah, that was a good little strong right hand of the body.
08:00What you can see, these Barrientes, they are skinny,
08:03but they're very strong and wiry, and they can, as you see,
08:06Angel's already keeping Romero off him with that strong left hand of his.
08:10But Chavez did some great work and was able to come away with that fight
08:13and get another win and another stoppage.
08:15Winner by TKO, that was at the end of round four, Chavez Barrientes.
08:20So, a little, you know, maybe some sibling rivalry there between the two and three.
08:23You know what, bro, I was just actually thinking,
08:25because I try to ask that every time, and I'm always like,
08:28you guys smart, you ever hate each other, whatever.
08:31No, they just seem to be really tight and cool with each other,
08:34which is a beautiful thing.
08:35They motivate each other.
08:37And Chavez got the big knockout earlier tonight.
08:39Now, Angel has a chance to get the WBA Continental Super Bantamweight title,
08:45so big opportunity for him,
08:46and this would be a big milestone for the Barrientes brothers
08:49if Angel is successful here in our co-main event.
08:52Guys, we had an interesting one at the fighter meetings yesterday
08:54when we were asking the brothers, like,
08:55do you like when you fight on the same card or not really?
08:58And they really got into it a little bit.
09:00Mostly, I guess, people generally don't like it.
09:03Why? Because it's an extra hassle and an extra worry.
09:07You would rather just concentrate on yourself is what it seemed to be the answer.
09:11And for many brothers in boxing, like, they're not always going to admit it,
09:15but they'd really honestly rather not fight on the same card.
09:19It's a distraction.
09:20Certainly, but when you are successful and things happen, it's great.
09:23Sure.
09:24And the opportunity is there.
09:25The first half was done by Chavez,
09:27and moments ago Angel Barrientes landed some lightning-quick body shots to Romero,
09:31and he's trying to slow down Romero.
09:33Romero putting his head down and just kind of just moving forward
09:36and almost trying to, you know, back up the younger man than Angel Barrientes.
09:40Well, this is a good idea for Barrientes.
09:43Okay, here we go.
09:44Angel Barrientes, right hand lands.
09:47Here's a left.
09:49Romero could be in trouble here in round three.
09:53Now that is where Angel Barrientes could get a little careless.
09:57He's doing well, and he's got great power, but that is how he got hurt when he was very young
10:02was when he gets that offensive, and he kind of starts swinging with his hands down.
10:05Now that being said, he's doing a great job in this fight, keeping his distance, and doing good work.
10:10He took back this round.
10:11Last round, Romero was, like, getting a little bit bolder and coming on,
10:15and Barrientes said, no, no, no, we're not going to have that.
10:18You've got to bully this little guy.
10:19Sorry, he's a little guy, but he's 5'4", comparatively.
10:21You can't let him walk you down like that.
10:24I don't think that's a good idea, because then he gets bolder, more confident, and no one needs that.
10:30Yeah, and you can see on the inside, Angel is doing a nice job of actually keeping those long elbows in tight,
10:36and he takes up a lot of his body with those long arms.
10:39But Romero is having some luck, touching him to the body a little bit,
10:42so he's absolutely, you know, scored well in this round.
10:46This ain't a gimme.
10:48No, not at all against Romero.
10:51Left hook lands to the body for Romero.
10:58Romero has had success in the past with body shots.
11:03Knocked out fighters with the body shot, and so he knows that's an effective tour.
11:08Barrientes taking it well, landing some good counter shots as well here in round three.
11:13Yeah, and Romero's, I believe Romero's ready to keep this pace up this whole fight.
11:18Speaking of him at the fighter meetings, he really wants this.
11:20We'll see if Barrientes is going in his first place.
11:22You've got to make him not be ready.
11:24You've got to answer that and shut that the hell down, I think.
11:27Yes, but he's going to keep coming.
11:28This isn't good for Barrientes.
11:31Romero in the fight like this.
11:33Take him out of the fight.
11:34Romero and Barrientes going toe-to-toe at the end of round three.
11:38We go to the corner of Jorge Romero, and let's take a look here at some of the recent fights.
11:49Remember that you mentioned that loss two years ago for Romero.
11:52Yes, and now in that loss, Romero also had two points deducted from him.
11:58Now, the referee said it was a headbutt yesterday in the fighter meetings.
12:02I asked him about it.
12:02He said that that referee was being a little unfair to him and that they weren't headbutts,
12:07but that's also what is part of that two-year layoff.
12:10He is a rough fighter because he comes to win, and it is tough.
12:13You have to be ready for it, and Team Barrientes obviously believes he is.
12:16And that was the only loss in Jorge Romero's career,
12:21and he feels like that's why he hasn't gotten opportunities to fight in the last year.
12:26He said, I've been ready.
12:27Promoters don't want to fight me.
12:28I've got experience.
12:29No, you get more gigs after you lose.
12:31Usually, you do.
12:32Come on, you got more calls.
12:34Yeah.
12:35And I believe that Correa was making his debut that night,
12:39but he was able to outwork him for the whole fight as well,
12:43and that's the question with Barrientes.
12:44Will he be able to keep this pace up?
12:47It seems that he's in shape for it, and his team believes he is,
12:51but right there, right there, that is a little bit of a push,
12:54but he is doing a nice job.
12:55He's got to work on preventing Romero on the inside.
12:58And one thing, we spoke about this in the tale of the tape, right?
13:01Angel Barrientes has the height advantage, the reach advantage.
13:04He's fighting toe-to-toe here with Jorge Romero,
13:08so should he be using the length a little bit more?
13:12Ideally, yes,
13:13but you've got a guy who is an aggressor who is not allowing you to do that.
13:17You have to impose yourself on him.
13:20Yes.
13:20How do you do that?
13:21With a long, sharp, hard jab, and there you go.
13:24That's how you do it.
13:25Big right hand from Angel Barrientes.
13:28Get offensive on the guy.
13:29Yes.
13:30When Angel's in the middle of the ring,
13:31that's when he has the most space to operate and take that step back
13:34and really come over the top with that right hand.
13:36And you keep doing that.
13:37You move it just like you just did there, that work.
13:39Now, don't stop moving.
13:41He does stop moving, and if you keep that up.
13:45I'll tell you what, this is turning into a bit of a fun fight right here, though.
13:48Yes, it is.
13:50Style and strategy clash here.
13:52Fast, furious, body shots, uppercuts, right hands, movement.
13:56This fight seemingly has it all.
13:58Two fighters, they're fighting toe-to-toe in a phone booth in the center of the ring,
14:03but there's also moments of movement, and it seems like for Angel Barrientes,
14:07he's got some of those long punches, so when he can get that distance,
14:10he can kind of wind up a little bit more on that big right hand.
14:12Are you giving Romero this round, maybe?
14:15Have we forgot to start scoring?
14:19I will have Barrientes.
14:21I think Barrientes has won these first three rounds.
14:23Now, that is completely unofficial, obviously, but I like his effective punching.
14:27But this is a round where Romero is getting closer.
14:30Now it is still up for grabs if someone lands something of note in this last minute.
14:35I could see him getting one of these first four rounds,
14:38and there is a lot of effectiveness to what he's doing, plainly and simply.
14:42This is working for Romero.
14:44Even if he's not winning the round, it is working.
14:47Now he has to eat a lot of shots on his way in there,
14:49and it seems like he's willing to do it.
14:51He says that Barrientes won't show him anything he hasn't seen.
14:54But I'll tell you, it's a tough test.
14:57So far, he's kind of not lying, you know?
14:59That could absolutely change.
15:01But he's fighting with a lot of confidence right now,
15:03and that is troubling for me if I'm Barrientes in the Barrientes order.
15:07Shut that down.
15:09Yes, now it's very hard to do.
15:10Yes, it is hard to do.
15:11One direction forward, right?
15:13He's been in the grill of Angel Barrientes.
15:16Barrientes is losing this round.
15:17He mostly backed up the whole time, and Romero outworked him up until now.
15:21So I want to hear in that corner, how are we going to turn this around here?
15:27We'll see the instructions from Richard Barrientes,
15:31the father of Angel Barrientes and, of course, Chavez Barrientes.
15:35See the urgency there because you have a fighter who's just one speed
15:39moving forward right in your grill.
15:41So, yeah, as we take a look at Angel Barrientes' father,
15:49Richard Barrientes, the trainer, and there's the last six for Angel Barrientes.
15:54Yeah, I mean, you can see that he has been hot.
15:56He came, as mentioned once again, he lost that fight earlier in his career,
16:01and his team has taken him slow and allowed him to work his way back,
16:04and he's in the toughest test of night, and he can fight, Michael.
16:07That's right.
16:09This one is, so far, playing out to me pleasantly surprised
16:13that Romero is bringing what he said he would.
16:16Yes.
16:17He wasn't lying to us.
16:18We were bullshitting or BSing during that fighter.
16:21Not at all.
16:21No.
16:22Romero is bringing what he said he would, Michael Woods,
16:25but you gave Romero that last round,
16:28but is he doing enough to consistently win this round, right?
16:32No.
16:32He won that one round and is doing some good things in the other round.
16:36The onus is upon Barrientes to change this now.
16:40This is the prospect.
16:41This is the guy who's moving up the rankings, not the other guy.
16:44This needs to be a solid round for Barrientes to turn it around.
16:49He's not losing the fight, but it's a little bit iffy.
16:53And this is what we're curious about once we got to this round five.
16:56How would the fight look?
16:57We knew at the beginning Barrientes would be successful.
16:59It's very hard to get in on him,
17:00but Romero seems up to that challenge, and as I said,
17:04he's taken a lot off the gloves, but Barrientes is still doing well.
17:07And I think that's the beauty of this sport,
17:10and specifically this platform, BoxLab Promotions, Amari Pedro,
17:13all the great people here.
17:14Because, okay, we talked about Angel Barrientes.
17:17Yes, he's the young prospect.
17:20He's 22 years old.
17:21But Jorge Romero is coming off a loss, hasn't fought in two years.
17:26If he wins tonight, he has a big upset win against a prospect,
17:29and he captures the WBA Continental belt at Super Bantamweight.
17:33So then he has a bunch of opportunities.
17:35BoxLab matchmakers are amongst the best at finding guys like this for reasons to win
17:40and putting them in and making more compelling fights than maybe they would be on paper.
17:46These guys really know what the hell they're doing.
17:48And Romero knows what he's doing.
17:50Barrientes is going to have to work harder than he wants to do in this fight.
17:54Yes.
17:55Sometimes young fighters with promoters, right, you see them just get matched up
17:58and build up their record, and it's a showcase fight.
18:01You know what's better than a showcase fight?
18:03A young fighter in against a tough veteran fighter, and he's still able to get through it.
18:06Easy for us to say, though, right?
18:08For Barrientes, he's like, no, bro, give me a showcase.
18:11You know, this is hard effing work.
18:13Now you'll see over in that last 30 seconds, Barrientes landed an uppercut.
18:19That's the first time we've seen from that tonight.
18:21He was talking about it yesterday.
18:22It might be a little weapon for him on the way in, but it's a very difficult punch to throw,
18:26especially a backhand effort.
18:27And it is something that a lot of guys use later.
18:30Why?
18:30Because people get more tired, your chin drops, and you see that later in fights.
18:34There was a massive left hook that landed for Angel Barrientes,
18:37and we're seeing a little redness on the right side of the head of Romero,
18:41and that probably is because of that quick left hook that Angel Barrientes has,
18:45that long, quick left hook.
18:47Yes.
18:47Now, as well, Romero makes it a rough fight, as you see, he just hit him in the back of the head.
18:54Yeah, right there.
18:55But he also really digs his head on you because he knows that you can control the body
18:58when you have your head like that.
18:59So he's working his way in there, and he's a rough fighter.
19:02Another uppercut right there from Barrientes.
19:04Tell you what, the gas tank of either of these guys, of Bill, these guys,
19:07seems pretty damn comparable, doesn't it?
19:09Romero seems to have a real good amount of gas in there.
19:12Yeah, well, that's what happens when both guys really want this fight and train to win
19:16and for the hardest one.
19:17And there, Angel Barrientes, he's got a little bit of room,
19:20and that meant that big, looping right hand.
19:22And we talked about the Barrientes brothers.
19:24They're long, they're wiry, but they still have power,
19:26especially when they can let those long punches go.
19:29It's interesting.
19:30Barrientes does not have confidence in his jab to get Romero to stop coming at him.
19:35Instead, he's moving.
19:36I would like to see him jab some.
19:38Stop that movement.
19:39Yes, again, that's easier said than done.
19:43Because Romero's moving his head a lot as well.
19:45Big right hand to close out round five for Romero.
19:49Very close round.
19:50Very close round, and it's been a very interesting fight.
19:53It seems like the game plan for Romero,
19:57you see him there in the corner, is I'm going to keep the intensity,
20:00and it's up to Angel Barrientes.
20:02If he slows down, then Romero feels like he'll have success
20:05as we get into the second half of this fight.
20:07Yeah, and Romero's going to, like he said, he's going to do this the whole fight.
20:12This is the only way that he can win this fight,
20:14and his corner says keep going, keep trying to get in inside of him,
20:17and don't, you know, Barrientes is going to have to try, like you said, Michael,
20:21use that jab and keep him off him.
20:22Once again, easier said than done.
20:23There's been an absence of that, I wonder if they're calling for it and saying,
20:27come on, you want this guy to slow down a little bit, stop him in his tracks.
20:32That's the way to do it without having to move so much.
20:34Because Romero's gas tank can't run him down.
20:36He looks fresh, he's pretty damn fresh.
20:39Look at him, look at him ready to come out, ready to rock and roll.
20:43Yeah, it's tough to break the will of a guy like that.
20:45Now, I like those uppercuts from Barrientes, though, in that last round.
20:53Quick combination, Angel Barrientes is in the black and red trunks.
20:57Jorge Romero in the blue and red trunks.
21:01It's been a spirited fight, and Romero has only one speed, straight ahead,
21:05and the onus has been on Angel Barrientes to move out of the way,
21:09to land counter shots, but there's been rounds that Romero has had success.
21:13We told you in the open, this one, not perceived as a coin flip,
21:19but more coin flippy possibly than people might think it would be.
21:22It is playing out like that.
21:24Now, it's interesting with that jab of Barrientes,
21:26he's not really using it as a measuring stick
21:31and trying to push him off him and get that distance,
21:33but he's not throwing it a lot.
21:34He's mostly just leaving it out there and using it as a get-off.
21:37He goes right there, that little bit.
21:39That's all you need.
21:39It doesn't have to be the most showy thing, but you've got to do it.
21:42Yes, keep those gloves occupied up at the top.
21:45That's it.
21:47Right there, that right there.
21:49That's an interrupter that Romero's not able to get off clean so much.
21:54This works.
21:56Nice body shot as well from Barrientes when Jorge was walking in,
21:59a little sneaky red uppercut to the midsection.
22:02He's investing hard to the body,
22:04and he knows that that might be a path to slowing down the younger, fresher,
22:11Angel Barrientes,
22:12but so far Barrientes has been able to take that attack,
22:15land counters, but Romero doesn't stop coming.
22:18No, but there's a lot of ebb and flow in this fight.
22:20Barrientes is coming back and taking control of this round.
22:23He's using his feet.
22:24He's circling.
22:24He's going different directions and keeping that bullet better.
22:26He's taking control, though.
22:28This guy's been coming.
22:30Romero's been coming forward in more minutes than this round, too.
22:32Yes, but who's been landing the punches?
22:35There's a lot from Romero, too.
22:37I'm loving Romero.
22:38I'm liking Romero's work here.
22:39I like Romero's work as well.
22:41He's coming forward, and he's not stopping,
22:42but Barrientes seems to be landing the more effective punches.
22:46In my eyes, now, that's obviously very objective
22:49because every judge always has a different scorecard,
22:51but that's what makes these fights so interesting
22:54is both guys are doing what they do very well.
22:57This is playing out as I hoped it would,
22:59and I teased in the open.
23:01Good.
23:01I'm glad because this is a good prize fight.
23:03Hey, Romero right there.
23:04Right in there.
23:07Telling you, he might be probably winning this round, too.
23:11Left hand for Romero.
23:13The round is up for grabs.
23:14I will say that.
23:16Yeah.
23:17You spoke about the subjective nature of boxing,
23:20and so these are going to be fascinating scorecards
23:23if we do make the final bell.
23:24And, guys, you can tell.
23:25You know how you can tell?
23:26The crowd.
23:28You're not having people howling for Barrientes and stuff.
23:31The Barrientes people who are here are a little bit like,
23:34yo, what's this?
23:35It depends what the judge is like.
23:36Do they have the come-forward fight,
23:38or do they like that?
23:39Reporting an aggressor and a come-forward guy
23:41and the B-side, that could absolutely happen.
23:44We have a fight, gentlemen.
23:46We do.
23:46This is exactly what we want in these youth-versus-experience matchups.
23:50We want to see the younger man tested.
23:55You see Romero in the corner?
23:57I mean, he's working very hard tonight,
23:59but he's also making Angel work probably the hardest he's had to work in his career
24:03because it takes a lot when that guy is just coming after you nonstop.
24:09His grade for me, Romero, real high grade.
24:12He has shut my questions up about him.
24:17No, he comes to fight.
24:18He's always going to be there.
24:20He doesn't believe.
24:20He says, I am the opponent.
24:22And once again, he said, they made a mistake, and I'm grateful for that.
24:25And this is a great match.
24:29For Barrientes, if he wins, it's up in the air now.
24:33You're getting really worked, man.
24:35You're having to really work.
24:36This is development, guys.
24:38This is the right way to do it.
24:40This is going to be a fascinating few final rounds.
24:45We know the game plan for Jorge Romero.
24:49He's going to go to the body.
24:50He's going to move forward.
24:51He's going to test Angel Barrientes.
24:53He's going to be the first one across the ring to get to the other side
24:56and go at Barrientes.
24:58And you're winning the first 30 seconds of the round.
25:00You keep doing that.
25:01But I'll tell you this, too, because we didn't know what Barrientes was going
25:06to be able to do on the inside.
25:07On the inside, he's actually standing his ground at times.
25:10And, yes, he is getting outworked in moments,
25:12especially when Romero is able to go on the offensive.
25:16But Barrientes is showing that he's ready for the step-up tonight
25:20because there were some questions about that.
25:22I'm really curious about these judges and the judging styles of all of them.
25:26They really could go either way in some of these rounds.
25:29Most of the rounds, frankly.
25:31Well, that's boxing.
25:32Yeah, that's boxing.
25:33And I think a question really will be something we spoke about,
25:36the subjective nature and also who's landing the harder shots, right?
25:39And that's where the subjective nature, who has more pop.
25:42And it does seem like at certain moments Angel Barrientes is getting a little bit
25:46more on those punches, on those counter shots.
25:49Yes.
25:49But not to the level that we would have maybe many of us expected.
25:54I'll say that.
25:55No, I mean, they don't seem to be bothering Romero too much,
25:57but they are eye-catching shots that are scoring and landing clean.
26:01Now, some of these, like I said, Romero does a great job of keeping those gloves up
26:05and catching a lot of them off them.
26:06But Romero is finding the holes in that.
26:09And Barrientes, I should say, but Romero continues to come forth.
26:13Halfway through this, round seven.
26:16And this has been the story of the fight, right?
26:19Round one, round seven.
26:20It's just two guys toe-to-toe, one guy in Romero moving forward, going to the body,
26:24one guy with quick counter punches and hard shots.
26:27Sometimes I over-reward a B-side guy because I like him, okay?
26:31I'm a human being.
26:32Maybe I'm doing that somewhat with Romero.
26:35But I don't think I am.
26:36The volume edge is, and he's, I don't know, I really love the work he's doing.
26:42And how could I not?
26:43Look at the stamina.
26:44Look at the come forward.
26:46He's being the aggressor.
26:47He's acting like the A-side in many of these rounds.
26:51No, I agree with you, Michael.
26:52I don't think you are.
26:53I think you are accurately pointing out how close this fight is.
26:57Oh, thank you.
26:58Two different styles.
26:59But I do think it's really, it's what we're talking about,
27:02the subjective nature of scoring, right?
27:03That is what's going to matter here.
27:05Guys, I'm the judge.
27:06I'm giving him that round.
27:08He's outworking the other guy.
27:10Here comes Angel Barrientes.
27:11Yeah.
27:11Quick combination.
27:12I'm giving him like this round, guys.
27:14Big right hand for Romero.
27:15I will say I love the ebb and flow of it.
27:17They catch, they go in.
27:19A lot of these are coming off the gloves,
27:21but I like what Barrientes is doing, to your point.
27:23I like what Romero is doing, but I disagree.
27:25I think Barrientes is landing the harder shots.
27:27And you're probably going to be right on the judge's scorecard because, because, because, okay?
27:34I'll just say because, because.
27:36I agree.
27:37Yeah.
27:39The familiarity and whatever.
27:41End of round seven.
27:43Very close fight.
27:46And, I mean, it's just been go.
27:47Body language.
27:48Who acts like, he acts like he won that round, and he probably did.
27:52You're saying Romero.
27:53Romero, yes.
27:54Right, right.
27:55He's not acting like an opponent.
27:56He's not acting like.
27:58I think he's won three of the rounds.
28:00Will they say that?
28:01Probably not.
28:02We will find out.
28:04Let's see.
28:07And we have a report here from Chavez Barrientes, who's been watching his brother, Angel.
28:13He says he needs to use the jab more.
28:15That is the advice of his twin brother, Chavez Barrientes.
28:19And you can see a little bit of a concerned look.
28:21He said, hey, wait a minute.
28:22A lot of bit of a concerned look.
28:24I got my fighter out in four rounds.
28:26This fight is competitive as we go into round eight.
28:28Well, we expected this, and yes, he does need to use his jab more, and it's a very difficult task.
28:33I hoped for this, but I didn't expect this.
28:36I was, yes.
28:37This is a pleasant surprise for me.
28:39Romero is fighting like he said he was going to, and that don't always happen.
28:43So props to that kid.
28:45Well, I mean, he does come from that Cuban school of boxing.
28:47He knows how to do a lot of things well, and he's very comfortable in that ring.
28:51He doesn't make too many mistakes, and Barrientes is finding that out.
28:54Romero, from the two.
28:55This is a put-up or shut-up round for Barrientes right here.
28:58Romero, from the Cuban school, in that he's technical, but he's more aggressive, right?
29:02And he's working the body more.
29:04He's coming forward more.
29:05He's eating a lot more punches, right, than you would think from the typical Cuban school.
29:09And he's making it much more exciting.
29:10He knows that that's his only way to win the fight.
29:12And a great combination there from Barrientes creates a little bit of room in throwing combinations.
29:17Barrientes needs to use that jab and use a lot of combinations to keep Romero's hands occupied up high.
29:23Because his power isn't dissuading Romero.
29:26No.
29:26Okay?
29:26So if your power isn't, what else you've got to dissuade?
29:29Volume, the jab, keep that distance to your liking.
29:33And guys, I want to bring up...
29:34And you've got to fight.
29:35You've got to fight like that, guys.
29:37Big right hand, Angel Barrientes.
29:39And this is the first moment that Romero took a second to breathe.
29:43And here comes Angel Barrientes jumping on him.
29:45You've got to smash him so he takes a pause.
29:48Yeah.
29:49It's a fight, guys.
29:50It's a fight.
29:50Yes, 100%.
29:51Yeah.
29:51And Barrientes had a great combo right there.
29:53A little three-punch and kept those hooks very tight on the inside for somebody that long.
29:58I'm impressed with Barrientes' inside game.
30:00And Romero is forcing it out of him.
30:02These are two guys fighting...
30:03And watch Romero slipping pretty adeptly, too, guys.
30:06Fighting knowing the WBA Continental Super Bantamweight title is on the line.
30:11And this could be life-changing for both men, right?
30:14Either way that it goes.
30:15I want to point out one thing that I thought was fascinating.
30:18We were talking about Angel Barrientes not using the jab as much.
30:21And that's what Chavez Barrientes' vice was, right?
30:24So do you guys want to see him work behind the jab a little bit more?
30:27I think he needs some of everything, to be honest with you.
30:30Here comes Angel Barrientes.
30:32Romero was turned around for a moment.
30:35Barrientes took advantage.
30:36Barrientes has to make Romero stop acting like the ace side.
30:42Way too much confidence.
30:44Round eight.
30:46I mean, this could eat...
30:47To me, this could be a 4-4 fight.
30:49Yeah, well, he's a very difficult guy to break the will of
30:52because he believes that he's been, in worse words, kind of pushed to the side of boxing.
30:59And he wants to prove tonight that he has the opportunity to show it.
31:01And he is doing it.
31:02He's a great opponent, especially in a great fighter.
31:05And he doesn't believe he's an opponent at all.
31:07But whatever happens here on out, his stock absolutely hits you.
31:11Yeah.
31:12He's a fun fighter as well.
31:13Yes.
31:15100%.
31:15I think this is one of those fights where no matter what, both of their stocks go up, right?
31:20And I don't think there's going to be a line around the block to fight either of these men.
31:24And showing heart, showing will.
31:26And I think the biggest thing is just the intensity has stayed the same
31:29or even increased as the fight has gone on.
31:31Curran, Barrientes has to win this fight.
31:34That's not a given.
31:35And his stock ain't going up.
31:36I don't know about his stock.
31:38Let's see the last two rounds, bro.
31:41You know, this jury is still out here.
31:43Okay?
31:45And let me ask you this.
31:46We heard from Romero in our meeting this week, right?
31:49He said he hasn't been given the opportunity because he's a tough fighter.
31:54I think, in a way, that's been proven true.
31:56Yeah.
31:57That's a fantastic point.
31:59Yeah.
31:59Fantastic.
32:01Let's take a look at some of the action from the previous round.
32:04It was fast and furious.
32:05What do you guys see here?
32:06I want to see if that's this little hook combination,
32:09three-piece combination right there.
32:11Left hook, right uppercut, left hook,
32:13and finishes up with another left hook and right hand.
32:16And that was the best Barrientes I saw in that round.
32:19And what you say about working inside, absolutely, that was present there.
32:23Enough to win the round?
32:24I don't know.
32:30His gas tank looks pretty good.
32:32Yeah, he doesn't look broken in any way.
32:34This is the fight he prepared for.
32:37This is what he wanted because he's sitting at 15.
32:40We can't forget that in the WBA ratings.
32:42And this is the type of test that you get.
32:44That dude wants that rating.
32:45Yeah, exactly.
32:47Romero is gunning for that damn ranking.
32:49And now it is to say, when you do have that ranking yourself, you're going to get the best version of these B-sides.
32:55Or not, I should say B-sides.
32:56That's what Romero calls himself.
32:57And you're going to get the best version of them.
32:59And I think we can feel, we spoke about the crowd earlier, guys.
33:03The energy is really increasing in this building.
33:05And the Romero supporters are getting louder and saying, hey, maybe there's a chance for our man here to pull something off if Angel gets a little tired.
33:13Yeah, because this is an old school fight where they're fighting in the middle of the ring, shoulder to shoulder.
33:18Nose to nose, in a phone booth.
33:20It's become a real good fight after, like, three rounds.
33:24It really started heating up.
33:26Now, Barrientis also gets great sparring over in that gym.
33:29He's been in guys with Tank Davis, Shakur Stevenson, Devin Haney.
33:32And you can see that work tonight has paid off for him in his career.
33:3514 fights.
33:36We can't forget that hour.
33:37And he's still doing great work like that.
33:41Better Barrientis round.
33:42He won the first minute of that round.
33:44Why?
33:44Being busier.
33:45Not letting Romero control the ring so much.
33:49In these late rounds, too.
33:51Yep.
33:55And it takes a lot of energy to be on that back foot.
33:59And he's kind of making a, he's still doing that.
34:01But when he works inside, he actually has pretty, I'd say he has the power advantage in this fight.
34:06He is more so better standing his ground and staying inside these right here.
34:11This is, I said this was going to be a crucial round.
34:13It is playing out that way.
34:15And Barrientis is acting like that is the case.
34:18And he heard it from his corner and saying, actually, bro, you need to win this damn round.
34:22Yeah.
34:22He belongs in that WBA 15 top if he comes away with a win in that because he showed a lot to his game.
34:29Fair enough.
34:30Fair enough.
34:31And that's nice when you earn something like that.
34:33Brother, he's earning it.
34:35He's having to earn it.
34:36And that's what he wanted, too.
34:37Quick one on your right hand.
34:39He really wanted that this much, Steph.
34:41Yeah.
34:42This is a.
34:43These kids can fight, man.
34:44He's fighting a dog, man.
34:45He's fighting a dog in a good way.
34:46A nasty dog.
34:47Because it will make him better.
34:48Yep.
34:49Great uppercut.
34:50Nice right uppercut from Angel Barrientis.
34:53And Romero is just coming forward, right?
34:55That one direction.
34:56We've been talking about that this whole fight.
34:58Big right uppercut.
35:05Just missed for Barrientis.
35:07They're trying to land it up.
35:08There's some good work there from Romero.
35:11One of the head.
35:12Quick combinations.
35:13Don't let him steal this last third of the round now.
35:17You did great work in the first two minutes, Barrientis.
35:19There you go.
35:20Finished strong, guy.
35:21Yeah, it's the ebb and flow of it.
35:22They're both landing those hard shots, and they answer back to each other with it.
35:26Big combinations for Barrientis.
35:28He emphasized it, put a button on it with a big shot to the body.
35:33Romero gas tank is tremendous.
35:36Both of them.
35:37Yeah.
35:38Both of these fighters in phenomenal shape.
35:43That brings us to the end of round nine.
35:46It's been rock'em, sock'em, road'em, guys.
35:48Barrientis' round, he won the first two-thirds, but he didn't win the last one-third.
35:52So I think that was a Barrientis round.
35:54But this fight could easily be a draw at this juncture.
36:00This last round could be the difference maker.
36:03Certainly a gut check here for Angel Barrientis and Jorge Romero, right?
36:09This is what you trained for, right?
36:11This is what you put those late nights in the gym.
36:13We said solid, real solid co-feature.
36:15We weren't lying.
36:16No.
36:16This is what you put that hard work in.
36:20This is why you wake up early to do the road work.
36:22I don't.
36:24They do.
36:25Yeah.
36:26Absolutely.
36:27No, as said before, they both want this badly.
36:31And we're going in the tenth and final round right here.
36:34And we'll get to see just how this one plays out to finish.
36:37It's a close fight, and they both can't let this round slip.
36:47This is the tenth and final round.
36:49The super bantamweight WBA continental belt is on the line.
36:55And Karan Bhatia on the call, joined by Justin Goosen-Brown and Michael with big right hand for Angel Barrientis.
37:03And is Romero hurt?
37:05This is what you do.
37:08Yes.
37:08What a fight.
37:09Yep.
37:11He's got him ready to go.
37:13Here comes Angel Barrientis.
37:14This is how you prove it, baby.
37:16Oh, he's so talented.
37:19Whoa.
37:20Mission accomplished.
37:21Wow.
37:22Angel Barrientis.
37:24Number 15 rating at the low lead.
37:27Gets the emphatic ten-round knockout win.
37:34Wow.
37:35How about that for a bow?
37:36That's how you finish it right there.
37:37My friend, couldn't have scripted it any better.
37:40Angel Barrientis knew the WBA continental belt at super bantamweight was on the line, and he fought like it in that tough round.
37:50He was fighting a B-minus fight.
37:52Guess what?
37:52A-plus ending, baby.
37:56Incredible.
37:57And you see the emotion there on the face of Angel Barrientis.
38:02He had Romero hurt, and he capitalized, right?
38:06He could have taken a chance, gone to the scorecards.
38:09He chose to end it in the ring, guys.
38:11Yes.
38:11He didn't give him any room to breathe.
38:13It started with that big right hand, and when he got it, it was probably like a 15, 20-punch flurry.
38:19There was a lot of punches, and he forced the referee to stop it.
38:24Barrientis' stock went up.
38:26Romero's stock went up as well.
38:27And it's very rare, right?
38:30You get knocked out, your stock goes up.
38:32Like we said, there's not going to be a line around the block to fight Jorge Romero.
38:36He was tough as they come.
38:38Moved forward.
38:39He just ran into a young, phenomenal fighter who now gets a title belt and showed that not
38:45only can he box and move, but he can finish a fight emphatically.
38:48Common end, baby.
38:49Yep.
38:50He's the type of fighter you want to fight if you want to have the best brought out of you.
38:53Yep.
38:55And you see the emotion on his face, eh?
38:59Let's check out our punch of the match, brought to you by Puncher's Chance Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey.
39:07And guys, of course, the electric end in round 10 here.
39:12Yeah, it's going to start with a right hand, I believe.
39:14That landed kind of on the side of, I don't know, a little uppercut actually right there.
39:23And we'll see that right hand fast and right on the head.
39:27There it is.
39:29Basting him.
39:30Yes.
39:31One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.
39:33Didn't let him tie up.
39:35Didn't let him tie up.
39:36Correct.
39:37Picture perfect.
39:38Yep.
39:40That is, that is, that's going to make a good plane flight home for the family too.
39:44And they're going to go with a Manny Pacquiao Barrios fight tomorrow.
39:47On a high note.
39:48Yeah.
39:51Could have been a tough plane flight.
