Fact-checking claims that France's working conditions are among worst in Europe

00:07A French economist recently slammed working conditions in France on live TV, sparking debate.
00:20It prompted a flood of reactions on social media.
00:23The economist bases his conclusion on this study from 2021 by Eurofound, an EU agency,
00:30which analyses labour conditions in 36 European countries.
00:35The methodology is robust and the results are considered credible.
00:38It includes a job quality index by country,
00:42which shows that more workers in France cited extremely strained or highly strained conditions than in most other countries.
00:50Only in Serbia, Montenegro, Slovakia and Poland do more workers have extremely or highly strained conditions according to the findings.
00:59If we also consider those who cited moderately strained conditions,
01:03France ranks penultimately with only Slovakia scoring worse and Albania faring slightly better.
01:10So while this economists claim that France ranks among the worst countries in Europe is true,
01:15it's not accurate to say France ranks 36th out of 36 countries with Albania.
01:21The index takes into account things like unsocial hours, work intensity, job insecurity and also physical risks.
01:29The issue of precarious working conditions has recently come to the fore in France,
01:34after five youngsters aged between 15 and 19 were killed in the workplace in just the past two and a half months.
