During a press briefing on Monday, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem spoke about the lack of cooperation between local law enforcement in New York City and federal agents.
Transcript
00:00Yes, sir.
00:25Absolutely not.
00:26What we're doing is we're targeting those individuals that are perpetuators of crimes
00:30in this country, those who have final removal orders, those who have undergone due process
00:35and are needing to be removed from this country.
00:37We will do that.
00:38The biggest problem we have here in this city is that they don't honor our detainers, is
00:42that they're releasing people out of the court system, out of jails, and we have detainers
00:47against them, and local law enforcement isn't cooperating with us to honor those so that
00:51we can get these individuals off the streets.
00:53So we're going to continue to do that work every day, but it would be much safer for
00:58law enforcement, much safer for the public, if we could do it in partnership with local
01:02law enforcement.
01:03And we do that across the country.
01:05In so many states, we have agreements with city police, with sheriffs, with local law enforcement
01:11who partner with us to make sure our officers can be safe while they do this work, and we
01:15can clean up communities that are victims of crime.
01:18Unfortunately, here in New York City, it's a different situation, because here, people
01:22play politics, and then you have innocent people get hurt.
01:25And that shouldn't happen anymore.
01:27Yes, ma'am.
01:28Yes, ma'am.
01:29Yes, ma'am.
01:34It depends on if you're talking about those who have charges against them, those who have
01:38pending charges, those who have final removal orders.
01:40Those all continue to be our focus.
