Déjà Vu in Two Words?
Transcript
00:00Déjà vu in two words. Déjà vu is a phenomenon in which a person feels they
00:06have already seen or experienced a situation even though it is actually
00:10occurring for the first time. Science links déjà vu to memory errors,
00:14particularly distortions or malfunctions in the processing of information
00:18received from the senses. In 1884 some psychologists concluded that the cause
00:24of the déjà vu effect was the so-called dual brain. According to their research
00:29one hemisphere of the brain receives information a fraction of a second
00:33earlier than the other, creating the sensation of having previously
00:36experienced the moment. Literally translated from French, déjà vu means
00:42already seen. It is the feeling that a place, person or situation is familiar
00:47while at the same time there is a clear understanding. I am here for the first
00:51time. We have never met or this has never happened to me. Is déjà vu real or an
00:57illusion. It is a memory illusion in which, despite a strong sense of
01:02familiarity, the time, place and context of the supposed previous experience are
01:07undefined or impossible. Around two-thirds of people report having
01:10experienced déjà vu at least once in their lives. What is déjà vu from an
01:15esoteric perspective? According to some esoteric views, déjà vu is a sign from the
01:21universe connected to a person's past, present or future.
01:26Déjà vu is a mysterious state of the mind. Specialists from various fields have
01:31studied it but have not been able to fully explain how it arises. According to
01:36O'Connor, déjà vu occurs when brain areas such as the temporal lobe send signals to
01:41the frontal decision-making regions indicating that the experience is being
01:45repeated. The frontal regions then evaluate whether this signal matches any real past
01:50experience. Is déjà vu dangerous? In most cases, déjà vu does not require medical
01:57attention. It does not affect quality of life or harm health. Is déjà vu a form of
02:03intuition? Déjà vu is a common intuitive experience that many people have
02:07encountered. The term comes from the French expression meaning already seen. When it
02:12occurs, it seems to evoke memories of a place already visited, a person already seen or an
02:18action already taken.
