00:00The dry season in the Outback.
00:10It's when the Aussie road train truckers go hard.
00:15To bank as much money as they can.
00:20You've got to be done, you've got to be tough.
00:22Good unloading with people that know what they're doing.
00:24I'm pissed off actually.
00:26Millions of dollars worth of trucking contracts are up for grabs.
00:31If that doesn't work, then we'll go to plan B.
00:34I don't have a plan B at the moment.
00:36It does take a little bit of a toll being away from the family so much.
00:40The place that we're about to go load cows at is on fire.
00:44See that smoke?
00:46This whole place is on fire.
00:48The roads out here are some of the longest on the planet.
00:52Break your ankle.
00:54One hat, one head.
00:55We've got everything we need.
01:01The chase is on to secure the biggest payloads and the most lucrative freight routes.
01:07All before the wet season hits and the roads get shut down.
01:11The chase is on to secure the small roof or the road or the road.
01:12We've got everything you've got done.
01:13It's a lot of field needs to cross the car.
01:14We've got everything we've got to do.
01:17It's all about it.
01:18The roads are going to get cool.
01:19We've got to get clean.
01:20The roads are going to get there.
01:22It's all about to get in the way to get rid of the world.
01:25We've got to get out of there.
01:26We've got to get USDs here.
01:27We've got to get rid of the road.
01:28Here we are, it's a turn off.
01:44We found it, so that's good.
01:46That's good, that's good.
01:50Jake is pulling up to the cattle yards at Numble Numble Station.
01:53His 53-metre triple road trip is loaded up with $250,000 worth of precious breeder cows and calves.
02:14Oh, no.
02:16Well, we've got to be careful of this not falling off the trailer.
02:19And it's making sure them cattle run off just nice and steady and not 100 million mile an hour, you know what I mean?
02:28You definitely have to want the best for those animals and their welfare, you know what I mean?
02:35Do your best by them.
02:37Yeah, absolutely.
02:38Unloading cattle is a dangerous job.
02:42Getting crushed, kicked and trampled are very real hazards that can put a truckie out of work for months.
02:50Come on, girls.
02:51You have a few calves there, so you don't want them to get lost in all the bloody commotion,
02:55but just trying to get them off just nice and steady, as steadily as we can.
02:59The Buntean Highway.
03:12And Dave's on the single-lane bitumen section of the road.
03:16He's on his way to the remote town of Top Springs to load up a car for delivery to Catherine.
03:22Top Springs is 300km southwest of Catherine along the Buntean Highway.
03:32Dave's already dropped off a load of groceries, part of his weekly Outback run.
03:38Transporting the car will help him earn a buck on his drive home to Catherine.
03:43Backloads are a critical part of keeping a trucking business out of the red.
03:47It's always handy to get something to come back.
03:50It just pays, you know, a little bit of cream.
03:53Yeah, there's a lot of broken-down cars.
03:54And the 100km's of dirt is pretty savage on cars.
03:58They break down often.
03:59Most of the cars that we bring back, you can't drive them.
04:02And they don't have mechanics out there that'll fix them.
04:05Easy money, if he can deliver by sunset.
04:10It can be stressful.
04:12Nothing happens quickly out here.
04:15It makes it difficult because we're running to a kind of schedule.
04:26They're expecting me at a certain time.
04:28If I'm late, then everyone's wondering where.
04:30And then if I get a little bit too late, then they leave.
04:34And so I'm going to try and get them and find them.
04:37And so it's a little bit stressful in that way.
04:39The vehicle he's searching for is a $75,000 mine-spec ute.
05:00It's parked on top of a loading ramp.
05:04The ramps are designed for heavy machinery.
05:07They can make loading light vehicles like this a nightmare.
05:11And I've got to put it on the back of this trailer.
05:13So I can't get it all straight enough to back onto the loading ramp.
05:18So I'll unhook, hook onto this, back it on, and then hook it all up.
05:22Dave needs to break his road train up so he can hook the rig directly to the flatbed.
05:34He needs to back up and get as close as possible to the loading ramp.
05:38Just go see if the actual owner of the car is still here.
05:52See if they can give me a hand or if they had some idea how they're going to load it.
05:56Probably need another vehicle to tow it on.
05:59But the identity of the owner remains a mystery.
06:03The joys of this job.
06:08At Numbl Numbl Station, Jake's cattle crates are full of cows and calves.
06:15Some are only a few weeks old.
06:18They're tiny and vulnerable.
06:20There you go.
06:21Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
06:38While the cattle are all empty, Jake needs the cattle on the upper deck to stay clear while he lowers the hydraulic ramp.
06:46Oh, it's going to drop that ramp.
06:52Way to go, girl.
06:54Hey, hey, hey, hey.
07:03Way to go.
07:04Way to go.
07:05Don't do that.
07:12Way is the way.
07:13Woof, woof.
07:17Go.
07:18Go.
07:24September, October.
07:26Hmm.
07:26And it's just outrageously hot.
07:29I feel like there was a week or two this year where it was, like, over 40 degrees every day.
07:35And it's just, like, building up, building up, building up.
07:38And there's just no give in the weather when you feel like it's going to rain and it doesn't rain.
07:42And it's just, yeah.
07:44Jake can't afford to lose his cool.
07:52Oh, yeah.
07:53He needs to sign off on the $250,000 worth of cattle.
07:58Then get back to Catherine for an even bigger job.
08:03You just want a copy of that con note?
08:04Oh, yeah.
08:05Good, eh?
08:06Roger.
08:07Jake needs to get on the road for a big dollar back-to-back load.
08:12But he can't leave Numble Numble Station until the cattle numbers are confirmed.
08:16Oh, we had probably five decks come in today.
08:19And they come in on Schubert's truck, which was good.
08:22Jake seems good value.
08:24He knew how to unload them all well.
08:25And good unloading with people that know what they're doing.
08:28Nice meeting you, mate.
08:29Yeah, you too, mate.
08:30Take it easy, eh?
08:31Yeah, mate.
08:32Take a trip home.
08:33Roger.
08:33It all went smoothly.
08:36Yep.
08:36Cows are in the yard.
08:37They're happy.
08:39Getting a feed and a drink now.
08:41There's 112 cows and 20 calves.
08:45So, yeah, they're all happy.
08:47All the calves are off.
08:48Found Mum again.
08:49So, yeah, they should be all sweet.
08:52Can't complain about that.
08:53So, that's always good.
08:54Good feeling.
08:55Real good.
08:57But there's no time to relax.
08:59Jake's next job is waiting for him in Catherine.
09:02It is what it is.
09:08It's going to grab the bull by the horns and wrestle it.
09:15Dave is in Top Springs, in the remote western region of the Northern Territory.
09:20He's backloading a $75,000 vehicle to take to the town of Catherine, but the ute is creating
09:27dramas.
09:29The trailer sits 30 centimetres higher than the loading ramp.
09:32With the dead weight of the ute, it's an impossible climb.
09:36Trusty blocks.
09:41Dave only has the most basic equipment to get the two-ton ute onto the trailer.
09:46Yeah, we can probably hook a chain on there and drag it on with another car.
09:57If it was back at the depot, I'd just get the forklift and the slippers and just load it,
10:02but out here, it's a little harder.
10:05I would just get mine out first and then you can get yours.
10:13Yeah.
10:15The poor old washing machine's definitely got the shittest deal.
10:20Jake's making a quick pit stop at home to see his partner, Hannah, and wrangle some clean
10:26clothes for his next job.
10:27Oh!
10:29I think the longest Jake's been away for is probably about 10 days to two weeks.
10:35Always smells like cow poo.
10:38Greasy and...
10:39Red dirt, grease.
10:40Yeah, that's rough.
10:41Oil.
10:41That's rough on the washing machine, goodness.
10:45That's a three-hour load just there to get the grease down.
10:49I've learnt to put vinegar in there, take a little bit of the smell out.
10:54It's like fabric softener.
10:55No, it's not.
10:57Yes, it is.
10:57It does the same thing.
10:58I wouldn't say...
10:59I just think sometimes it gets cow smell out in the sweat.
11:03Next question.
11:06It's good dip.
11:07It is good, eh?
11:09You can't be called an relisher.
11:11You can.
11:12You reckon?
11:12Yeah, it's not even that good.
11:14Serious.
11:14It is.
11:15It's better than your bloody hummus.
11:17It's not.
11:18Shit, you get it.
11:18Should I brought my hummus down?
11:19Nah, shit out.
11:20What?
11:27Where are you going tomorrow?
11:29Hmm.
11:30Tomorrow, I'll go.
11:31Maybe home for the weekend, maybe not.
11:33You won't even be here anyway.
11:35Yeah.
11:35You'll be...
11:36Partying up.
11:36With the girls in, darling.
11:37Party, yeah.
11:38Yeah, that's right.
11:39Go to the Oyster Bar.
11:40Yeah, take your keeney.
11:42Lay up on the beach.
11:45Anyway, I'll let you know when I know.
11:49Yeah.
11:55Dave is using everything at his disposal
11:57to get a $75,000 mine-spec ute onto a flatbed trailer.
12:02I'll get a chain and drag it on with another car.
12:05See if I've got a chain.
12:09I've got a winch.
12:10Okay.
12:11Worth a shot.
12:14We're going to try and use Old Mate's winch and drag it on.
12:17That's plan B.
12:20It just depends whether it'll just roll up that bump or not.
12:24And then we'll go to plan C.
12:26I don't have a plan C yet.
12:28We'll make it up as we go along.
12:31The 4x4 winch is rated to 4 tonnes.
12:34There's plenty of pulling power,
12:36enough to destroy the front end of the ute
12:38if Dave goes too hard.
12:40But it's not a straight pull.
12:43Can you just take a little bit of weight?
12:45Winch ropes hate sharp angles and sharp edges.
12:49The rope could snap
12:50or drag the ute sideways off the trailer.
12:55Now that's the green light here.
12:56Yeah.
12:58Just this way a bit.
12:59Give a little bit of a pull there.
13:01No, no, this way.
13:02Other way.
13:02Other way.
13:10If that cable breaks,
13:14it'll take his leg off.
13:16In Catherine,
13:29Jake has jumped straight onto a 2,000 kilometre cattle run
13:32and this time, he's not alone.
13:35He'll travel in convoy with a second triple,
13:37driven by a road train trucker nicknamed Hollywood.
13:41There you go.
13:42A.K.A. Grim.
13:44Hello, Grim.
13:46First, they'll pick up 12 decks of cattle
13:48worth half a million dollars
13:50from a station 200km south of Catherine.
13:53They'll then deliver them to a station outside Alice Springs,
14:00a thousand k's down the Stewart Highway.
14:02Yeah, now I've forgotten what I've got you about.
14:10It doesn't sound like you.
14:13Good time to start with this shit, isn't it?
14:17Hollywood has been a truckie most of his life
14:20and a road train driver for the last 25 years.
14:23The reason why they call him Hollywood
14:25is because he's the best of the best truckers,
14:30so best manners,
14:31poor, well-dressed,
14:33very nice to everybody.
14:35That's why he's called Hollywood.
14:38I didn't know that.
14:40Anyway, here's your $20 for saying that.
14:44No, I did get told that.
14:46Yeah.
14:47Hmm.
14:48Well, he's 30 then.
14:49Bit of a tricky one, this job,
14:57because it's loading so late in the afternoon,
14:59like daylight this morning would have been ideal,
15:02but you get that.
15:05That comes with the job,
15:07so it'll be a late night tonight.
15:11The job is taking Jake and Hollywood
15:13from Catherine in the Top
15:15to Alice Springs in Central Australia.
15:19Probably the biggest challenge of this drive
15:23is the bloody 20-degree temperature drop
15:25from Catherine to Alice Springs.
15:28It's nothing to leave Catherine
15:30at a balmy 30 or 35 degrees
15:32and then get down to Alice Springs
15:33and it's zero, like,
15:35or zero or worse.
15:37There have been reports of a squeal
15:38when I've opened the door
15:39to unload in the morning,
15:41but it's not true.
15:45Can you just take a little bit of weight?
15:46Dave's time-critical $75,000 ute backload to Catherine
15:52is becoming more critical by the minute.
15:55Have a little bit of a pull there?
15:56No, no, this way.
15:57Other way.
15:58His lack of resources is the problem
16:00and it's not his first rodeo either.
16:04Dave's dramas started eight hours earlier.
16:078am in the town of Lajamanu
16:11on the western edge of the Northern Territory.
16:14This is Dave dropping off a truckload of food and groceries.
16:18To cover the costs of running the triple back to Catherine,
16:21Dave's going to load up his truck
16:23with three broken-down vehicles.
16:25We're just going to grab a car
16:29and put it on that front trailer,
16:31hopefully take it back into town in one piece.
16:34Dave needs to get the two-ton 4x4
16:37into a trailer meant for fruit and veg.
16:40There's no loading ramps here.
16:42His only option
16:43is the community's three-ton forklift.
16:47Dave's road train specialty
16:48is general freight.
16:50That means he needs to be a driver, mechanic and handyman.
16:54Journey will be no problem.
16:56They're lifting it up,
16:57hopefully we'll be able to block it up
16:58and, you know, protect it a little bit.
17:02The forklift can easily take the weight.
17:05Trouble is, it can also wreck the vehicle
17:07and any damage to the car will be on Dave.
17:11Exhausts get squashed, tail shafts get bent,
17:14all sorts of interesting things under there.
17:17If it's not flat, then it'll get bent.
17:20Yeah, I'll have to put a board under this side.
17:23I'll just see if I've got some.
17:26Dave will need to keep
17:27the more vulnerable parts of the car
17:29clear of the forks.
17:46Probably can come a bit closer.
17:47Let's put one under the other side.
17:53The blocks will protect the undercarriage of the ute,
17:56but they'll also raise its centre of gravity.
18:01Utes are heavy at the front
18:03and difficult to balance,
18:05and the forklift is working on uneven ground.
18:08Just a little bit more if you can.
18:24Got to keep an eye out for that white 650 here somewhere,
18:27you ain't gripped too.
18:28Jake and Hollywood are on their way to pick up six decks of cattle each.
18:37They're contracted to deliver them to a station near Alice Springs,
18:41a thousand kilometres south.
18:43It's a half a million dollar load.
18:45He's just out of phone range, apparently.
18:47Not far out of phone range.
18:50Yeah, I reckon we'll get pretty close here somewhere now.
18:53But first, they have to make an unscheduled stop.
18:57This morning, one of the boys got a call
18:59for a broken down truck
19:02just south of Mattaranker here somewhere.
19:05He thinks the problem is his alternator's packed it in.
19:08Yeah, he's not going anywhere.
19:10Yeah, you lose your alternator,
19:12you lose all your battery power.
19:15The alternator charges your batteries in your truck,
19:17so if they're not charging and run out of power,
19:19your truck's going to stop.
19:22Breakdowns out here are brutal.
19:25There's very little phone signal,
19:27no roadside assist,
19:29and daytime temperatures peak in the 40s.
19:33When it does happen,
19:34truckies rely on one another
19:36to get the word out to send for help.
19:39We've got another alternator here for him.
19:41We've just got to find him here
19:42and we'll drop that off to him,
19:44get him back on the road again.
19:47Here he is, right here.
19:59He's just around this next corner, are you, Greg?
20:02Yeah, right up, mate.
20:03I'll just get around that corner
20:05and I'll pull up behind you.
20:13The detour is going to make their day
20:16even longer.
20:32Dave is in Large Amanu on the edge of the desert,
20:36backloading a broken-down 4x4
20:39into one of his empty trailers.
20:40This is the first of three
20:44he's been paid to collect
20:45and returned to Catherine.
20:48Probably can come a bit closer.
20:51They're paid in advance.
20:53Failure to load
20:54means a full refund
20:56and a damaged reputation,
20:58not what Dave wants.
21:00Just a little bit more if you can.
21:02That's it.
21:04Yep.
21:07All right.
21:07That'll do, mate.
21:09We didn't even break anything.
21:13Can you tilt it down a bit?
21:15Yeah.
21:17Done.
21:20Well, that went well.
21:21One down,
21:24two more to go.
21:32Between Dave
21:33and his next load
21:34is a truck-destroying,
21:36chewed-up dirt road.
21:41It snakes its way
21:43through some of the most remote regions
21:45in Australia.
21:46It's a long way out here
21:52and it's not the best road.
21:53I would say
21:54that it's one of the worst
21:56in the territory
21:56and you're just fighting it all day.
22:02Kalkorinji
22:02and Larjamano
22:03lie on the edge
22:04of the Tanamai Desert,
22:06remote red dirt country
22:08covering 65 million acres.
22:11It's one of the least
22:12inhabited areas
22:14of the outback.
22:14The biggest danger
22:15would be
22:16just the gravel road,
22:18the unpredictability of it.
22:20They've had rain
22:21out here recently
22:22so it could be
22:23quite cut up
22:25the first bit.
22:26It just means
22:26driving a little bit slower.
22:29The top is loose,
22:30corrugates.
22:31There's a few soft patches
22:32if they haven't fixed them.
22:35The road is a combination
22:36of corrugations
22:38and ruts.
22:39If something goes wrong,
22:41Dave's on his own.
22:46Jake and Hollywood
22:55have stopped on the side
22:57of the Stuart Highway
22:58to help a road train driver
23:00who's blown an alternator.
23:02Truckie Jordan
23:03spent the night
23:04on the side of the road.
23:05A bit of a breakdown issue
23:07while I can't afford it now.
23:09I was rolling along,
23:11got a bit of a smell
23:12in the cab,
23:13then went to roll the hood
23:14and there was smoke
23:15peeling out.
23:16So lucky I stopped
23:17when I did otherwise
23:18it probably would have
23:19burned out.
23:19Jordan has to get
23:33the old pulley
23:34off the busted alternator.
23:35It's a two-person job.
23:38Got to pull the pulley
23:39off this one
23:40and put it on
23:41the new alternator here.
23:42How's that, Mark?
23:59You all right
24:00to put that on?
24:00Yeah, yep.
24:01Well, thank you very much
24:02for that again.
24:03Right on, mate.
24:04Thank you very much again.
24:05Cheers.
24:05See you next time, mate.
24:06You too.
24:08Poor bugger.
24:09Doesn't have it
24:12all the time,
24:12but...
24:14Good to you, okay?
24:18What's up?
24:21You made me the truth?
24:29What's up?
24:36No, that's bloody good.
24:38Good day done for the day.
24:39How, mate?
24:40Yeah, it was good
24:41to help him out.
24:42Good suit will come back
24:43in tenfold.
24:45It will be you
24:46on there one day.
24:49Guarantee.
24:50I've definitely
24:51been in those fellas' shoes.
24:53I had a coolant leak
24:53on the side of the road
24:54and didn't have the right
24:55clamp to seal it off
24:57and a fella pulled him
24:58behind me
24:59and then, yeah,
25:00had a yarn
25:01and told him all about it
25:02and he sorted me out
25:03and got it patched up
25:04and got me home.
25:06So, yeah.
25:07Definitely know
25:08both sides of that story.
25:11But their good deed
25:12has cost them
25:13precious time.
25:15They'll now be driving
25:16even later
25:17into the night.
25:28Dave's made it
25:29to Kalkorinji.
25:30He left a trailer
25:31here earlier.
25:33There's a car parked nearby
25:34but Dave has no way
25:36of knowing
25:37if it's the right one.
25:40I'll have to ring up
25:41and find out
25:42but I was hoping
25:42they'd put it over here
25:43but...
25:44because it doesn't go.
25:46So I'll have to lift it
25:47from there.
25:49Look up first
25:50and then I'll ring
25:50and make sure
25:51that that's the right one.
25:52The last thing
25:53Dave wants to do
25:54is load
25:55and transport
25:56the wrong car
25:57500 kilometres
25:58back to Catherine.
26:05Dave's in Kalkorinji,
26:07a remote town
26:08on the edge
26:09of the Tanamai Desert
26:10collecting his second
26:11back load
26:12for the day.
26:13Look up first
26:15and we'll load it.
26:16Do you know
26:20what the story is
26:21with this car?
26:22I have no idea.
26:24It just doesn't go.
26:25That's all I know.
26:29No idea.
26:32Dave's taking a punt
26:34on the clapped out wagon.
26:36Generally speaking
26:37if the car
26:38is near the loading ramp
26:40that's the one
26:40you're supposed to take
26:41but every now and then
26:42it's not.
26:43It's just a random car
26:44that's parked there.
26:46It'll be a tricky one.
26:48It has vulnerable
26:48side steps
26:49and body mouldings
26:50as well as
26:51the exhaust
26:52and suspension
26:53components underneath.
26:56Normally I carry
26:57the bonnet first
26:57but the bonnet's
26:59not catching properly
27:00so I'll put this
27:01one on backwards.
27:05Transporting cars
27:06backwards
27:06isn't ideal.
27:08The rear doors
27:09don't seal very well
27:10and the vehicle
27:11can easily fill up
27:13with dust.
27:13Dave has to guess
27:17where to position
27:17the forklift tines
27:19to perfectly balance
27:20the two tonne vehicle.
27:25The wagon is lifted
27:26just high enough
27:28to clear the top
27:28of the flatbed.
27:29Even a tiny movement
27:31on the forklift
27:32will cause the vehicle
27:33to rock dangerously
27:34on the tines.
27:35It's loaded
27:42but there's still
27:43a burning question.
27:45Still yet to find out
27:47if it's the right car.
27:47It probably needs
27:54fixing anyway
27:55but I'll ring
27:56and make sure
27:56that that's the right one.
28:00Silver Prado.
28:01No, there's one here.
28:03We'll make sure
28:04it's the right one.
28:10Jake and Hollywood
28:11are trying to resuscitate
28:13their schedule.
28:13They made the
28:15200km hop
28:16to Maryfield Station
28:18easily enough.
28:22By the looks
28:23you're actually
28:23all right
28:23to keep coming too mate.
28:25Nothing either way.
28:31Still good?
28:33Still good.
28:37The two triple road trains
28:39have been fully loaded
28:40with half a million dollars
28:42worth of cattle.
28:44From Maryfield Station
28:45they'll head down
28:46the Stewart Highway
28:47to Alice Springs
28:48a thousand kilometres away.
28:53I'll definitely
28:54have a look
28:54behind that highway
28:55and quickly grim
28:56and then
28:56make a bogey
28:59at the runner.
29:01I don't know.
29:04It's 4.30 now mate.
29:07We might get down
29:07to Alice Springs
29:08about daylight,
29:11six o'clock,
29:12seven o'clock
29:13something you reckon?
29:14I reckon
29:15that'll be
29:16the best outcome.
29:17Yeah, yeah.
29:18You'd be right
29:19to stay awake or not?
29:21No,
29:22not at all.
29:23Don't like it.
29:25Yeah, right.
29:27That one night
29:28you stayed up late
29:29you were cranky
29:29all next day.
29:31Oh,
29:31when was that?
29:33They're all
29:34floating the ones.
29:35In Kalkarindji,
29:39Dave's worried
29:40he's loaded
29:41the wrong vehicle.
29:43Yeah,
29:44it's got WA plates.
29:45So,
29:46what's left
29:46here's the right one.
29:49I have got
29:49the right car
29:50at least
29:50the right colour
29:51and the right
29:52type of normal plate
29:53so
29:54it's a good start.
29:57Yeah,
29:58right to go.
29:59Two cars down,
30:00one more to go.
30:01Across the
30:09Northern Territory
30:10over 1.6
30:11million cattle
30:12are moved
30:13every year
30:13by these
30:14double deck
30:15three trailer
30:16road trains.
30:17It's a billion
30:18dollar business
30:18in the top end.
30:21Hollywood grew
30:21up around cattle
30:22and has worked
30:23with them
30:23most of his life.
30:25Because you're
30:25feeding and
30:26watering them
30:27and looking
30:29after them
30:29so they get
30:30used to you.
30:31know what
30:32you're doing
30:33and you
30:34can talk to them.
30:36They come up
30:37to you
30:37and you call them
30:39and they're
30:39beautiful.
30:41It's a great
30:41sensation
30:42to have
30:43cattle in hand
30:45and to be able
30:47to do that
30:47to them.
30:49These big
30:50long-term
30:51contracts
30:52are worth
30:52huge dollars
30:53to the
30:53trucking companies.
30:55Every single
30:55passenger
30:56needs to arrive
30:57happy and healthy.
30:58Once you've
30:59loaded those
31:00cattle are
31:00your cattle
31:01to look
31:01after.
31:02You are
31:03responsible
31:03to get
31:04those cattle
31:04to the
31:04other end
31:05and in
31:06good order
31:07and no
31:08bruises,
31:09no dents
31:09in them.
31:11This trip
31:12here will be
31:13sort of 12,
31:1413,
31:1514 hours
31:15depending
31:16how the
31:17cattle are
31:17going.
31:20Pretty important
31:21to keep
31:21them rolling.
31:22You just have
31:23to keep
31:23rolling.
31:24Roadhouse
31:32food is the
31:33number one
31:34energy source
31:35for truckies
31:35on the run.
31:37You know
31:38the funniest
31:38thing?
31:39We can cook
31:39better at home
31:40than you can
31:40get when you
31:41go out.
31:42So we cook
31:42a lot at
31:43home.
31:44We go out
31:45rarely.
31:46Lonely
31:47sleepovers
31:47in truck
31:48stops are
31:49part and
31:49parcel of
31:50life on
31:50the road.
31:51But for
31:51Hollywood,
31:52home is
31:53where the
31:53heart is.
31:54First thing
31:55I want
31:55Graham to
31:55do when
31:56he walks
31:56through the
31:57door is
31:57ravage me.
32:00Kiss me,
32:01cuddle me.
32:04Drag me
32:04wherever.
32:06Then when
32:07I'm finished
32:07that I can
32:07put my
32:08porch down,
32:08can't I?
32:09Yes.
32:12When Jake
32:13walks through
32:13the door,
32:15say,
32:15hey girl,
32:16give him a
32:17hug.
32:17If I've
32:18had a big
32:18day,
32:19sometimes it's
32:19nice to
32:19just chill
32:20out,
32:20hang out,
32:22make dinner.
32:23Sit on
32:24the couch,
32:24watch some
32:24TV.
32:26That's
32:26about it.
32:26It's pretty
32:27chilled out.
32:28If it's
32:28midnight,
32:28I just
32:29get grunted
32:29at.
32:30Yeah.
32:36Top
32:36springs,
32:37and Dave's
32:38using a
32:38tourist's
32:39winch to
32:40drag a
32:40$75,000
32:41vehicle onto
32:42his flatbed.
32:44Back the
32:45other way,
32:45Pete.
32:46Back,
32:46loosen off a
32:47little bit.
32:49He's already
32:50got two
32:51cars on
32:51board,
32:52but this
32:53one is
32:53proving to
32:54be the
32:54most
32:55challenging,
32:56and he
32:56needs all
32:57three sorted
32:57to make
32:58the backload
32:59pay.
32:59We're
33:00not
33:00paying
33:00gear or
33:01something.
33:02Dave has
33:02used chunks
33:03of wood to
33:04fill the
33:04gap.
33:05Give it
33:05a gap?
33:06Yeah.
33:11I'll get
33:12in and
33:12hold my
33:12foot on
33:13the
33:13drive.
33:16But the
33:16angles on
33:17the cable
33:17are lifting
33:18the winch
33:19car up,
33:20taking the
33:20weight off
33:21the tyres,
33:22and it's
33:23being dragged
33:23through the
33:24gravel.
33:25Communication
33:25is also an
33:27issue.
33:28One minute
33:28kid,
33:28probably.
33:33We'll
33:33back off
33:34a bit.
33:36Go back
33:37a little bit.
33:38Dave is
33:38battling all
33:39sorts of
33:40extreme
33:40forces.
33:42It's man
33:43versus
33:43ute,
33:44heavy vehicles,
33:45bad angles,
33:46and poor
33:47traction.
33:49It's too
33:50big a step
33:50for it to
33:51jump up.
33:52If we're
33:52pulling up,
33:53it'd be fine,
33:54but we're
33:54pulling down,
33:55so it's just
33:56hitting into the
33:56back of here,
33:57it's too far,
33:58and we just
33:58need to make
33:59a little
33:59bridge.
34:00They've got
34:01a couple
34:01of pallets,
34:03but if we
34:03sit on there
34:04and run it
34:04back to here,
34:06then once we
34:07step up,
34:07we'll be
34:08all right
34:08then.
34:09So,
34:10that's
34:10plan C.
34:14Dave will
34:14be dragging
34:15the two-tonne
34:16you over
34:16pallets that
34:17are working
34:18outside of
34:19their specifications.
34:20But if he
34:21wants to
34:22fulfill his
34:22triple backload
34:23order,
34:24it's his only
34:25option.
34:27To stop
34:28the winch car
34:29dragging,
34:30they're using
34:30slings to
34:31anchor it
34:32to the
34:32three-tonne
34:32forklift.
34:34There is
34:35no plan D.
34:37Dave has
34:38now utilized
34:39every meager
34:40resource at
34:41his disposal.
34:41We
35:01successfully
35:01got it
35:02on.
35:04Right,
35:05tie this
35:06on and
35:06then we'll
35:06be out of
35:07here.
35:08If you
35:08sit there
35:09long enough
35:09you can
35:09figure stuff
35:10out.
35:10That's
35:11what they
35:12expect of
35:12us and
35:13that's
35:13what I
35:14expect of
35:14me.
35:15I don't
35:15want to
35:15be calling
35:16the boss
35:17all the
35:17time saying
35:17oh it's
35:18too hard
35:18now.
35:19We'll
35:20figure it
35:20out.
35:21It's
35:21more than
35:22one way
35:22to skin
35:22a cat.
35:24I think
35:24he can
35:25do
35:25anything
35:25when it
35:25comes
35:26to
35:26fixing
35:28anything,
35:28building
35:29anything,
35:30anything.
35:30Maybe
35:31not
35:31cooking,
35:32probably
35:32stay
35:32away
35:33from
35:33that.
35:34If
35:34it
35:35doesn't
35:35go
35:35in
35:35the
35:35toaster
35:36then
35:36maybe
35:36just
35:37don't
35:37worry
35:37about
35:37it.
35:40Jake
35:42and
35:42Hollywood
35:42are
35:43working
35:43in
35:43convoy
35:44to
35:44deliver
35:44half a
35:45million
35:45dollars
35:46worth
35:46of
35:46cattle
35:47to
35:47a
35:47station
35:48near
35:48Alice
35:48Springs.
35:49You
35:49got it
35:49mate.
35:50All
35:50good
35:50mate,
35:51thank
35:51you
35:51very
35:51very
35:51much.
35:53No
35:53worries,
35:53enjoy
35:53the rest
35:54of your
35:54night.
35:56They're
35:56due
35:57there
35:57tomorrow
35:57morning,
35:58but as
35:59daylight
35:59fades,
36:00the roads
36:01become
36:01more
36:02dangerous.
36:03You've
36:03got to
36:03be
36:03very
36:03vigilant
36:04this
36:04time
36:04of
36:05night
36:05for
36:05straying
36:06animals,
36:07pigs,
36:08kangaroos,
36:09donkeys,
36:11and a few
36:11horses.
36:13Going
36:13to stray
36:13cattle
36:14wandering
36:14onto the
36:14road,
36:15they're
36:15probably
36:15the worst
36:16I
36:16like
36:16because
36:17it's
36:17the sheer
36:17weight
36:18of
36:18them and
36:20they hit
36:21pretty hard.
36:22There's
36:23cattle right
36:23there now
36:24wandering
36:25out on
36:26the road.
36:28Can't do
36:29much about
36:29dodging them
36:30with loads
36:31we've got
36:31on,
36:32but we
36:33do the
36:33best we
36:33can.
36:39How far
36:40now,
36:40mate?
36:42I would
36:43say
36:43700-ish.
36:47Close
36:47your eyes
36:48go a bit
36:48quicker.
36:55In the
36:56top end,
36:57truckies do
36:58long hours
36:58on the
36:59road.
37:00The
37:00distance
37:00between
37:01towns
37:01is
37:02vast.
37:03Setting
37:03out late
37:04in the
37:04day
37:04means
37:05Jake
37:05and
37:05Hollywood
37:06will be
37:06driving
37:07through
37:07the
37:07night.
37:09The
37:09light is
37:10fading,
37:11so
37:11Hollywood
37:11drops
37:12further

37:19having
37:19somebody
37:20sitting
37:20on your
37:20tail
37:21all night.
37:22I'll go

37:26if I see
37:26his
37:27tail lights
37:28every
