00:00three families have gone back in time and swapped their 21st century lives for an 1880s homestead
00:13where are my walls so far they've been stripped of modern comforts that's the bathroom what's
00:22the nose pipe before that is not to wipe your butt with no there's only two beds i'm not sharing a bed
00:32me neither you guys are acting like kind of snooty and snotty and they got a taste it's canned
00:38hell of their new reality your success or failure will be judged but frontier living's about to get
00:48a whole lot tougher whatever i brought my family into
00:51it's cold in here freezing freezing cold
01:16i'm so stiff from sleeping in one position all night our three families have survived their
01:24first night on the frontier how'd you sleep it's horrible there's no white noise no white noise
01:32there is the sound of the stream but it's very faint though it's late july last night the temperature
01:42dropped to 50 degrees fahrenheit it was freezing in here last it was cold and the lopers had only a
01:49tarp for protection i need to wash my face what i'm supposed to do how i wash my face splash
01:58y'all are killing me
02:03haven't done this in a while mom
02:07joaquin feels like he has walked back into his past and he's okay but i'm completely a fish out of water
02:16i am missing hot water right now throughout the night i think i asked myself a hundred times can i
02:26really do this good morning 1880s sleep hey time to get up my we have a long day ahead of us we got
02:35to get the wall fixed today how long can we endure without a front wall without a front door
02:41i am worried that we're going to have visitor whether it's to be a bear a coyote a wolf whatever
02:48there's no protection here like none
02:52can we get rid of the chamber pot because it's terrible the longer it sits in here the more it
02:59smells like urine this is delightful for guidance on their new normal
03:06the families turn to the almanac
03:11see what it has to say
03:13their go-to guide for frontier living
03:16greetings the next few days will be about settling into your new home and the 1880s way of life
03:23your priorities are exactly the same as an 1880s homesteaders
03:27arriving on their new plot of land you need to make sure your cabin is safe and comfortable
03:32and the family needs to be fed there'll be plenty more to get on with later
03:38but first we gotta get this wall done
03:41so i feel like our priorities are the outhouse
03:47yes we definitely need to work out some privacy
03:49i need to go
03:50try to avoid the outhouse but um i think my time is up
03:59while jason tests out his back to basics bathroom
04:05mosquito
04:05the hall kids are struggling with their new sleeping arrangements
04:10jet was all on top of me and he does not know the definition of personal space
04:15well you were out in a strength position so your butt was like in my space
04:21i'm missing like my queen-sized bed
04:26it's like bumper cars sharing a bed with my sisters because they want all the room to themselves
04:32i don't think i can manage this this needs to be fixed immediately
04:37sleeping in the same bed all summer ain't gonna cut it
04:41dad what are you doing
04:43we need another bed plan
04:45our pantries look a little bare
04:48the families need to fuel up for a day of manual labor
04:53well i guess our breakfast options are what
04:55limited
04:56but the supplies they arrived with are not going to last much longer
05:01bread and honey
05:03or honey and bread
05:05i mean like realistically could we go to the market here in the 1880s
05:12and get that get flour get sugar because i'm gonna need some of that
05:16mama what supermarket do they have here
05:18like what did we really walk into where does the rest of our food come from
05:26what is it going to look like
05:27luckily historian dr jacob frefeld is here
05:35with answers on how the families can keep themselves fed
05:38knock-knock
05:41hi lopers
05:43joaquin good to see you again please have a seat jake
05:45oh come on
05:46how's the space treating you
05:48um you treated us very cold last night
05:51oh got a little chilly did it
05:53well stacy i brought some stuff that i think are going to help you as you push forward
05:57wow i get something
06:00as a woman in the 1880s i get something
06:03but what's the sum money
06:07because she smiles and she's been there
06:09and homesteaders would have had money you would have come with your life savings so
06:12how much do you have there
06:13okay ten fifteen twenty
06:17and thirty so we have thirty dollars
06:20this is our life savings in 1880
06:24all three families have been given the same amount of money
06:28we are giving you thirty dollars one dollar was equal to about thirty dollars in today's money
06:35and they'll have to make it last
06:38so thirty dollars would give you a thousand dollars spending power
06:42here it is
06:44wow
06:46the average weekly expenditure for a family of homesteaders like you is about a dollar seventy-five
06:52a week which is sort of close to like sixty dollars
06:54there are going to be opportunities when you'll need to spend money
06:57and other times when you're going to have the choice
06:59so it's really important to keep an eye on how much money you have
07:02because the end you're going to come back to the land office to prove up your homestead
07:05and that's got a fee with it
07:07so you want to make sure you've still got six dollars left to get that final land certificate
07:11okay
07:12okay
07:13but the money's not going to do you much good if you don't have a place to spend it
07:15that is true
07:16you want to take a look at
07:18ah new grocery and dry goods
07:20yes
07:21great reduction in prices
07:23where have you been
07:24wow
07:25in the 1880s the general store was often used as a bank post office social club and even
07:36as a local undertaker's but you're going to have access to a general store to buy goods
07:40from i mean you can't grow sugar out here right cinnamon nutmeg like those seasonings that
07:47i would want yeah your store is about two miles away you can take a walk there later today if you'd like
07:54oh wow thank you i've left you with some stuff to talk about here yes you have and thank you for
08:02coming by i expect there to be a door the next time i'm here i expect that to be one too
08:07i'll see you soon
08:09all right thank you i gotta give him a round of applause while he leaves like he's the best thing that has
08:15happened to me since i've been in the 1880s
08:17yes i get to go shopping
08:20he heard your cries he heard my prayers
08:23he heard my cries
08:25the money gotta act like this
08:29but no more than 175 stacy yes sir i'm gonna take mama with me mama is very frugal so she can kind of
08:38help me out in that area all right my biggest concern with stacy going to the general store
08:45as as always her spending too much just take like two or four dollars or just three dollars
08:51so i can make sure that i stay within that budget but we cannot spend it all in one time
08:56stacy okay all right i get it you get it i get it got it now who's gonna tell the hannah riggs
09:06coffee beans 40 cents per pound that's a lot of money no actually that's not terrible and do you
09:12want to see your daddy smiling when we go shopping for groceries we don't really have a budget you
09:19know we get what we need and we throw in some wants in there as well we probably eat out three
09:25or four times a week but now we have to plan for every single meal and make sure that we have what we
09:30need let's do some grocery shopping i like to spend money good food means good mood
09:37come on buddy let's go shopping i don't even know if this is a trail i think you nailed it
09:46while half the homesteaders head out for supplies i've never walked to the store before getting our
09:53cardio in the rest have a tougher task last trip to the broken outhouse let's get this first yeah
10:03while joe and ethan build a bathroom p and peace
10:11jerryman jet tackle the bed here it goes that's nice look at that that was a nice cut
10:19we got our foot boards we got our head boards we got our side rails this is where it gets tricky
10:27our biggest challenge is going to be these joints you can't get that wrong it has to line up perfect
10:32there's a lot of pressure to get the bed made because there's five of us sleeping in two beds
10:36all right so i'd rather do it right take a little longer than do it wrong and have to redo it there
10:42you go and got to go and do other stuff as well this is a long long process it's going to be a while
10:49ken okay that bed definitely needs to get made i just want to be able to spread my arms and legs
10:57around without playing bumper cars but jeremy has other ideas so the bed's an ongoing project but
11:08the thing is i really have been wanting a garden like this for a long time
11:12each homestead has a kitchen garden to grow their own produce
11:17if i loosen up the dirt in between all the vegetables less chance of the weeds to kind of grow
11:27it's very important job too i'm not sure the kids would agree jeremy
11:32whoo i need an electric saw the family with the longest to-do list is the lopers
11:43i have to fix this wall secure this cabin we need a door and we need windows hold your
11:49hand down land hold it up or down down there we go you ain't got to push on it don't push on it yes
11:55sir let it go you hold that in
12:07that's why i said hold it up so it wouldn't break yes sir
12:12i grew up working on stuff like this with my uncles with my grandfather teaching me these skills
12:18but i'm here by myself all i have are my boys with me and they've never done something like this
12:23what i always tell you it's not just about working doing how to work all right yes sir
12:28so hold that when i'm holding it up don't let it break off
12:32working with my dad to build this wall put this door up it's a little challenging because you know
12:38he's always talking about but you don't know how to work you don't know how to work how do you know
12:41i don't know how to work all right what i want you to do is lift it up i need a flush come on up
12:47yes sir
12:53on top of me having to get this done my anxiety is also high because i know my wife when she gets in
12:58the store with money deep breaths joaquin well mom we're almost there what a walk
13:04oh my this is very exciting
13:18hello ladies good afternoon it's stacy loper hello there i'm trevor trevor

13:32their supermarket for the summer is filled with must-have goods for life on the frontier
13:38mom what is the washboard oh there's the washboard so that's kind of hair products there and then the
13:47pomade man ladies slicked the hair down definitely have to keep that in mind i took the liberty to
13:53prepare just some necessities all right it's only a dollar 75 but it'll last you for the whole week
14:01peaches pears two cans of corned beef a bag of flour but that's just your base you could purchase other
14:07things as well penny candies
14:10uh if you could no we don't want to splurge today we want my husband to be proud of us
14:20yeah but only a penny a penny for a scoop
14:24i recommend the licorice it's quite strong okay okay we we will we'll take the licorice you got it
14:35i'll have that delivered out to your uh cabin thank you oh max will be happy oh yes yes
14:43gilbert's general store oh that's so cute hello ladies welcome hi oh wow you have a good store here
14:57there's lots of stuff are you looking for any food stock for the week or yes that's what we really came
15:04for could i recommend a base supplies for the week for you perhaps that'd be good is there anything else
15:10we can add i need potatoes there you go thank you thank you bye so far two of our families have
15:21been cautious with their cash hey come on in welcome hi how's it going we need we need a lot of groceries
15:28that's a dollar 75 for the base okay let's do the coffee sure but one has the urge to splurge
15:37feel like daddy joe would love the almonds i will prefer ketchup jason is definitely the person that
15:44is more likely to spend more he ends up adding a bunch of random candy or some other products that
15:49we really don't need so hopefully he just doesn't overspend maybe one more salmon maybe with candy corn
15:57i feel like a deck of cards would be a good thing i will do the hard candy as well sure
16:02so your grand total is 283 thank you mr gilbert my pleasure
16:12i wonder if i could have bought a stuffy i did not see any stuffies look at the outhouse
16:18they got it done oh they actually fixed it they're here how's the store we got a lot of the basics of
16:24flour and cornmeal um we got a bottle of ketchup we got a couple pieces of candy and the deck of cards
16:36and we did get almonds how much did we spend in total 283. two dollars and 83 cents
16:45i was a little surprised about the almonds but jason was thinking of me so i really appreciate that
16:50how much you spent one dollar and 76 cents we spent a penny over
17:01i'm proud of you and i bought y'all some candy oh wow you i told you to watch her not a doc
17:09i want to splurge a little bit for the grandkids thank you nana you're welcome thank you nana you
17:20welcome landed all right we almost have one side done boys yeah ready one two hey babe yeah mom when
17:30we get in that front door baby it'll be first thing in the morning
17:34i do not feel good going in to tonight i need four walls to engulf me and my family
17:45so that i can feel safe and secure
17:52the family's first full day on the frontier is drawing to a close did you finish the bed
18:00oh not the bed no no we decided to weed the garden instead
18:08so it looks like we're all sharing a bed tonight i expected the bed to be done pretty quickly
18:14and it's still not done it's a lot harder than it looks to cut out those joins
18:19so i was just gonna do it tomorrow okay all right all right
18:23good night good night it's my dreams i am missing my bed at home we're both feeling homesick
18:35everything is starting to settle in this house this the living situation it's just all so new it's
18:42that's nice yeah she's home you're at chunks
18:53Please, I can't take that.
18:59It's already bad enough.
19:14One, two, three.
19:20That's cold.
19:23All right, well, guys, this is breakfast for today.
19:30Pears, peaches, and this lovely bread.
19:34The trip to the store has helped bolster supplies.
19:37It's a good little start.
19:39I like it. Thank you.
19:40But the families haven't had a hot meal since they got here.
19:44We need to learn how to use the stove.
19:47So today's task is cooking over an 1880s cast iron stove.
19:52Sounds simple enough.
19:55I'm wishing that I had an air fryer right about now.
20:01I've never made fire before.
20:04I, um, yeah.
20:07I don't cook. I don't have to do any of this.
20:10All of this is going to be a challenge.
20:13I feel like I'm playing in the trash.
20:15My wife is not used to doing the things that an 1880s wife would normally do.
20:21When it comes to all the cooking, the cleaning, washing of dishes and clothes and stuff,
20:25me and the boys normally do that.
20:27From a preparation standpoint, about three to four hours to have dinner ready.
20:31So we need to start dinner at least by noon.
20:34What am I doing here?
20:43What did I sign up for?
20:45Then it's going out.
20:48I don't know what to do next.
20:57I don't like doing stuff I'm not good at.
20:59I'm not good at this.
21:00This is not what I do.
21:04To know that it's depending on me that my family eats hot food.
21:08It's not fair.
21:15What's wrong, Stacey?
21:17What am I supposed to do to get it to come over to the other side?
21:21You got the great open?
21:23I don't know.
21:26Listen.
21:27You got a good fire going right now.
21:31You hear it rolling?
21:35My mother-in-law is an asset.
21:38Just the wisdom that she brings, that knowledge of how she lived.
21:43Add some more wood.
21:46The more wood you have, the harder it's going to get.
21:49So you mean to tell me I got to keep adding to this all day long?
21:52As often as you need it.
21:54What?
21:54Yes, ma'am.
21:56I just have to give them all the information.
22:00The knowledge that I have and the know-how, and just believe that they'll be able to do it.
22:06It will get better.
22:09We'll see.
22:10She will not be here with us the entire time.
22:14When she leaves, let's pray and hope that we come out of this alive.
22:20So, Jason, what do we think is our potatoes?
22:23Also hoping for their first hot meal, the Hannah Riggs are planning a vegetable soup.
22:29I have no idea what a potato looks like.
22:33If they can find the ingredients, that is.
22:35My theory is this is potato.
22:40The potatoes are under the ground.
22:44I feel like this is not it.
22:47I'm pretty sure they're peas, Joe.
22:49So I feel like these are weeds.
22:52Close.
22:52Swiss chard.
22:54This is catnuch.
22:56Beetroot.
22:58If I was home, I'd just go search on the internet and see what a potato looks like.
23:01I didn't anticipate it would be this difficult just to find three vegetables for dinner tonight.
23:06The garden, it is overwhelming.
23:08There's a lot of pressure.
23:09There's a lot of stress.
23:11We need to get the boys fed, but we don't know what any of this is.
23:15We have something.
23:17It's a potato.
23:17It's a potato.
23:19I think these are going to be the most delicious potatoes we've ever had in our lives.
23:22Probably not, but okay.
23:24Recipe for boiled onions.
23:33The Halls are also searching for a delicious dinner from a selection of authentic 1880s recipes.
23:40No boiled onions.
23:41Over bread and lard.
23:43That's disgusting.
23:45I was using that lard for my eyebrow gel.
23:47I do not want to eat that.
23:48It says boil 10 minutes, pour off this water, again add boiling water, boil a few minutes, and drain a second time.
23:57Pour in boiling water, add salt, and boil for one hour.
24:00I'm not doing all that.
24:01Let's just make our own recipe, because at home I don't use recipes.
24:06So let's just boil these for an hour.
24:12Okay, I need more water.
24:13I have done three trips for water.
24:17We've done a trip to wash the potatoes, a trip to wash the onions, a trip to wash the pot.
24:22It's like 16 trips for one meal.
24:25We're not even started.
24:29Uh, like that?
24:30I guess.
24:32We're doing another trip for water.
24:35What am I supposed to do?
24:37Just sit here and look pretty?
24:40Well, I guess so.
24:41That should be easy enough.
24:43All right, save our three or four more, then we'll put the door in.
24:58Using a recipe to make some potato-type scone?
25:01This is very intimidating.
25:03I don't do this.
25:06Doesn't need to be too thick, right, Mom?
25:09Okay.
25:10I hope this is what a scone's supposed to look like.
25:12What you think?
25:15I didn't expect you to do as well as you were doing.
25:20Mama, I'm with you 100% on that one, honey.
25:25Stacy?
25:26Yes, baby?
25:27I got your door on.
25:29But you, but you, oh, yes!
25:32What you think?
25:34I love it, Joaquin.
25:36Awesome.
25:37I can get a kiss or something.
25:39Get off me.
25:40I gotta go cook.
25:41All right.
25:42Four hours later, dinner is served.
25:55You ready?
25:59All right.
26:01I think it's going to be delicious and harder that way, I think so.
26:05We have prepared you some boiled onions and some fresh corn.
26:11Sounds good.
26:12I definitely want to know how the scones taste, y'all.
26:19Mama, this tastes good.
26:21The food is amazing.
26:23Hands down.
26:24Oh, thank you.
26:28I'm feeling much better than I did coming into this thing.
26:31To see my kids say, I am enjoying this.
26:34This tastes really good.
26:35I was like, yes, that is much more fulfilling to me.
26:39That makes this more purposeful for me.
26:42Out of five stars, how many stars would you give our soup?
26:464.8.
26:464.8?
26:48Okay, Ellen.
26:48That is really good.
26:50Cheers.
26:50Cheers to potatoes.
26:51Ready?
26:54Yeah.
27:00Oh, God.
27:03It's different.
27:05Oh, that's terrible.
27:06Tastes sweet.
27:08We had to boil the onion for two hours.
27:10Jeez.
27:11So is this what homesteaders ate back then?
27:14I guess.
27:14It was in the almanac.
27:16It wasn't a great, fulfilling meal.
27:19It wasn't worth the four hours of cooking.
27:21Maybe you should have stuck to the recipe after all.
27:25You like it?
27:30Everybody feels a little safer.
27:32But the job's not done.
27:34The Loebers finally have a wall.
27:37But the work is far from over.
27:39We have to fill up some of these cracks and spaces that allow all the wind and stuff in at night.
27:44So we need some help.
27:47There's a page.
27:48Get the almanac.
27:48It says homesteading and community.
27:51Having not seen their neighbors since they arrived, it's time to rope in some reinforcements.
27:57Many homesteads were situated within a larger community who could be called on in the times of needs.
28:03Turning a difficult or tedious task into a social event.
28:07Community events like this were called bees.
28:11They were followed by a community meal or celebration.
28:15Oh, okay.
28:17Just like we have the gatherings in our neighborhood, our cul-de-sac.
28:22Yeah.
28:23We grow community back at home.
28:25And it is just so important to be able to laugh and smile and talk and help somebody else.
28:31To know that in the 1880s, that's what they believed in was community.
28:35Yeah.
28:35No, I love this.
28:37Becoming a community means more work done quicker.
28:41It's not like a win-win situation.
28:42It does.
28:43So, should we ask them?
28:45Absolutely.
28:46All right.
28:48So, this invite is going to go out.
28:50We're going to slip it up under people's doors.
28:52And we just hope for the best.
29:00You check for spiders?
29:01Yeah.
29:02All right.
29:02Good night.
29:02Good night.
29:12I found something.
29:22We have a note?
29:23Dear neighbors, we are determined to create a comfortable and safe home.
29:27In the spirit of the 1880s homesteading community, we would like to invite you to help us.
29:32In return, we will help you finish your cabin, the lopers.
29:39Well, this is very interesting because I have a busy day ahead of me.
29:42I've got a lot planned, so I don't know how much time I have.
29:45What if they could help you with the bed, you know?
29:47The bed is just a time killer.
29:49It's just, I don't really need help, you know?
29:51I don't need extra dead weight.
29:56I think that you should help them regardless.
29:59It's just being good neighbors.
30:02I think community is really important.
30:04I think it's super beneficial to have neighbors looking out for you.
30:09The halls are a very tight-knitted family, and I think sometimes that can be more downfall.
30:16Hey, this might be the little spark that starts a community where we can all work together.
30:22So let's see where this takes us.
30:24I think it's good karma to help others, right?
30:29And that's what we want to shout, that we want to help people.
30:33I am a Lone Ranger.
30:35I don't have a lot of friends because I do my own thing.
30:39I've learned all my life.
30:40I can never count on people.
30:41Hi.
30:49Mama, Daddy.
30:51One of the rigs are here.
30:54Hello, hello.
30:55Hey, how you doing?
30:56It's good to finally see some people.
30:58Yeah, good to finally see you as well.
31:01I was thrilled to get the invitation from the Lopers.
31:03I wanted to get to know them a lot better.
31:06Your place looks nice.
31:07And when we first got here, the front wall, just some beams.
31:09We had an open concept outhouse.
31:15No privacy at all.
31:17We do help our neighbors back home in Texas as well, and they help us too.
31:20So it's kind of a normal thing for us.
31:23What's your biggest pain point right now?
31:25So at night, we have a mosquitoes company.
31:27I'll tell you where we can start at.
31:28Fill up some of these cracks and spaces.
31:30Hey, fellas.
31:32Hey, Jim.
31:32How are you?
31:33How you doing, man?
31:34What you guys up to?
31:35I think the same thing everybody's up to.
31:37Yeah?
31:38Getting our homestead in order.
31:39Wow, nice.
31:40What was your situation?
31:42We don't have enough beds for our family, so I'm in the process of making a bed.
31:46Oh, wow.
31:46Yeah.
31:47Well, I wish you'd have been here a few days ago.
31:49Yeah?
31:49When there was nothing up here.
31:51And when I say nothing, I mean nothing but some frames.
31:54Really?
31:55Yeah, we had no front wall.
31:56Wow, you know what?
31:57Your house is actually better than ours.
32:00Seriously, you got smooth boards.
32:02I got more gaps than you.
32:04Like, my place is nowhere near as good as this.
32:06Like, wow, I got to catch up to you guys.
32:08Like, I got a lot of work to do.
32:10They're bugging me on the bed and just want life a little easier, you know?
32:14I'll tell you what.
32:15What I'm hearing is we all need some help.
32:17So, if you could, spare a little time with me today.
32:20And we're more than willing just to cut it off short and come help you.
32:23Yeah, I don't really need help yet, right, yet.
32:25Okay.
32:27I am in the middle of something.
32:29Like, what I need is time.
32:31If you came over to help me with that bed, we would be standing around not knowing what
32:34to do and it would be terrible.
32:37I don't like that.
32:38I mean, come on, dude.
32:39We're more than willing to lend a helping hand.
32:43But right now, we, man, with my house, I just want to get it finished, outside especially.
32:48Fiddling in some of these spaces.
32:49Yeah.
32:50But it's these biggest ones.
32:51Okay.
32:51All right, well, let's get to work.
32:54We should get this done cracking here.
32:58Jeremy is struggling.
33:00Even if we don't know what to do, I believe four more hands are better than two.
33:04I don't like asking for help because a lot of times people make me feel like I owe them
33:12and I don't want to feel like I owe anybody.
33:15You don't know the skill set.
33:17You don't know the asset that they could be, but you don't want to give it an opportunity
33:21for them to show you that.
33:24Your choice.
33:26I think Joaquin and his family and our family, we have each other's backs and we'll be there.
33:32Jeremy hasn't quite built that up, so that's on him.
33:37Right now, if I had to choose the one in three that fails, I feel like he's most likely to fail.
33:43I only have so much time I can help you guys because I got a family that's going to be bugging me.
33:48Oh, let's do it.
33:52That irritated me.
33:53Fresh from building friendships...
34:03The last thing I have to really do is drill all these holes so we can weave the rope through.
34:08Jeremy is finally building the bed.
34:12You don't want this thing wobbling around.
34:14You want it straight.
34:15Okay.
34:16Now we strike it.
34:17Wait, did we check this straw for, like, bugs and stuff?
34:24No.
34:25That's why we roll around on it, so they'll die.
34:28Okay.
34:31Yeah, it's just not going to work.
34:34This is not a woman's job in the 1880s, but it's my job.
34:43Right?
34:44Yeah.
34:44Finish the mattress.
34:45Let's try it out.
34:46Mommy!
34:47You have a little run.
34:48Go!
34:49You're missing half of it.
34:52The bed stinks.
34:53We're going to wake up smelling like hay.
34:55We already stink.
34:57Maybe you stink.
34:58Now the moment of truth.
35:02Ow!
35:03I like it.
35:05It's squishy.
35:05Thanks.
35:06Good job, I'm proud of you.
35:07High five.
35:07Give them in, Daddy.
35:08Up two.
35:10Well, there it is.
35:11The bed is done.
35:12We can check that off our list.
35:13Thank you, Dad.
35:15I think so.
35:16And when we go to sleep at night, we can go say that we're going to hit the hay.
35:23Tie those ends together, babe.
35:25Get it snug.
35:26The building bee may have failed to bring everyone together, but maybe a potluck will do the trick.
35:33We're very, very determined individuals.
35:36Mm-hmm.
35:37Everything looks so good.
35:39We have the grit to make it through anything, but this frontier living is not something that you want to do on your own.
35:45Ooh, they've got a spread already.
35:48Oh, there's the Hannah Ridge.
35:50Hi.
35:51Y'all come with a handful of goodies.
35:53Oh, yeah.
35:54We got flowers and salad.
35:56This looks amazing.
35:58Hey, hey, neighbor.
35:59Hi.
35:59Oh, you guys come bearing food as well.
36:03It's so good to see you all.
36:05Hello, hello.
36:06How are you?
36:07No, it's not the time for me to tell Jeremy how I felt about him earlier.
36:11I'm inviting you into my home, so, you know, I'm going to show you the nice Stacey.
36:16I don't know how much you guys eat, but please eat enough to where I don't have to take this in my house tonight.
36:20Good.
36:21But don't ever think that she can't be nasty.
36:23I love the hat.
36:28How are you?
36:32How are you doing?
36:34I am marvelous.
36:36Hey, guys.
36:36Hello.
36:37How's everyone doing?
36:38So, how are y'all enjoying the food?
36:42I think that answers the question.
36:45The kids seem to be having a great time with each other.
36:47I know.
36:48I love it.
36:49They've been dying to get together.
36:51Jeremy, what's been your biggest challenge?
36:52Some of the way they built things and did things, and it's time-consuming.
36:56The offer still stands.
36:58I would definitely help out any way I can.
37:00Okay, yeah.
37:01I'll let you know if anything comes up.
37:04We are wives and moms only in the 1880s.
37:09I know.
37:10So, I'm a businesswoman.
37:11What do you do?
37:11Same thing.
37:12Yeah?
37:12I'm extremely career-driven, and it has been tough.
37:17Me, too.
37:17I'm having no hard time.
37:18You have to stay here and wash the dishes and do lunch.
37:22And, baby, my nails.
37:24I know.
37:25Oh, my God.
37:27I really needed that time, Lena and I had.
37:30Just to get a feel of, am I the only woman that's feeling this way?
37:34And she is definitely in the same boat with me.
37:36So, we read that one out of three families fail when they're on the homestead.
37:43So, we've got three families.
37:45Like, we need to work together.
37:47Like, that's key.
37:48We really don't know what we're in for.
37:50It's probably going to get a lot harder.
37:52Baby, this is the frontier.
37:54And what I learned day one is going to make you a breakie.
37:59It looks really peaceful now, but, you know, there is a calm before the storm, right?
38:12Next time.
38:16Do you want it?
38:16Do you want it?
38:17At a livestock auction.
38:20$10.
38:20Sold.
38:22Relationships take a hammering.
38:24They can have it, honey.
38:26That's fine.
38:26We see how you play.
38:28I just kind of wish the adults would make friends.
38:32This is a real workout.
38:34Don't need no dealing.
38:36And breaking the land.
38:38This is not fun.
38:39Ease up a little.
38:40Whoa.
38:41I know you're afraid of failing.
38:43Leads to family fallouts.
38:45This is not what I'm used to.
38:47I don't need attitude.
38:49I don't need moping.
38:49They are not you, and they don't have to be you.
38:54I don't need you.
38:55I don't need them.
38:58Yeah.
