Govt: Water system is broken

The system for regulating water companies should be overhauled and replaced with one body for England and one body for Wales, a landmark review of the sector has advised. The much-anticipated report from the Independent Water Commission, led by former Bank of England deputy governor Sir Jon Cunliffe, outlines 88 recommendations to the UK and Welsh governments. Water minister Emma Hardy says she cannot guarantee the government will implement all 88 recommendations. Report by Gluszczykm. 00:05seas and we've also got soaring water bills and so the system clearly isn't working now

00:10today's announcement is part three of a process that we've already started part one was looking

00:15to reset accountability introducing the water special measures act banning unfair bonuses

00:20introducing criminal liability part two was rebuilding so we got 104 billion pounds to

00:26literally rebuilt some of our crumbling assets including our sewage treatment works which

00:30are a source of the pollution and today part three is about the revolution it's about root and branch

00:36reform of the entire water sector tinkering around the edges isn't going to be enough we're looking

00:41for fundamental change well what we're going to be doing is looking over the summer at all of those

00:4588 recommendations in detail to see which ones we will be accepting and which ones we might not be i

00:50can't give you a number at the moment but then we'll be bringing forward a white paper in october which

00:55will respond to all of it and in that we'll have all of the details well what we've said is in the

01:00next five years we're going to half the amounts of pollution half the amounts of sewage and half the

01:04excuse me the amounts of phosphorus going into our rivers lakes and seas
