00:00Hey! Quit messing around!
00:02I'm not messing around, I'm doing important stuff.
00:04Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at fan theories about Superman spanning all forms of media.
00:10Some of these were later confirmed as true, while others are just crazy enough to be true, or completely off-base.
00:16There will be a few spoilers.
00:19Are you being serious right now?
00:21Yeah.
00:23Number 10. Ultraman Will Become Doomsday.
00:27Superman.
00:27Before even hitting theaters, fans debated Ultraman's true identity in James Gunn's Superman.
00:33Going by comic lore, Ultraman could have been Superman from an alternate universe.
00:38While Ultraman is revealed to be a Superman doppelganger, he's actually a clone that Lex Luthor created.
00:44This version of Ultraman shares more in common with the clone from Superman Doomsday.
00:53On that note, Ultraman is pulled into a black hole during the climax.
00:57Although, that doesn't mean he's dead.
00:59One theory suggests that Ultraman will not only return in a future DCU movie, but he'll come back as Doomsday.
01:05His black suit is already Doomsday-esque, and Ultraman equals Superman's strength.
01:15The effects could leave Ultraman mutated and hell-bent on revenge, setting the stage for the death of Superman.
01:22Number 9. Chloe Sullivan Was Going To Become Lois Lane.
01:26Smallville.
01:26Although Clark Kent initially has eyes for Lana Lang in this origin story, we all know he's destined for Lois Lane.
01:33While Lois isn't present in the first three seasons, Clark goes to school with Chloe Sullivan, an aspiring journalist who has the hots for him.
01:40The exposure to the blast must have done something to his body.
01:43No, this can't be right.
01:44This was shot down in a season 3 episode where Chloe mentions her cousin Lois Lane, who finally appears in season 4.
01:51She's my cousin. She won't mind at all. She's not interested in journalism.
01:59Lois Lane.
02:01Fans weren't too far off, however.
02:03Creators Alfred Goff and Miles Miller confirmed that they toyed with the idea of Chloe being, quote,
02:08the proto-Lois, changing her identity somewhere down the line.
02:12They ultimately scrapped this idea, allowing Erica Durant to deliver a fan-favorite portrayal of Lois.
02:19You talk a lot.
02:20Well, I'm just not very comfortable with uncomfortable silence, and you're not exactly keeping up with your end of the conversation.
02:25Number 8. Lex Luthor and Batman shared a vision.
02:28Batman vs. Superman, Dawn of Justice.
02:31We understand why Batman has such animosity towards Superman in this DCEU crossover.
02:36In addition to witnessing the Man of Steel's collateral damage firsthand,
02:40Bruce Wayne has a dream where Superman brings about the end of the world.
02:44She was my world.
02:45While Batman's motivations are fleshed out, audiences were generally confused as to why Lex Luthor pitted the titular heroes against each other.
02:55We guess Lex views Superman as a threat to humanity, although this isn't well established in the film.
03:01And now God bends to my will.
03:04One theory provides more context, proposing that Lex had the same post-apocalyptic vision as Bruce.
03:10This would certainly give Lex a more relatable reason for targeting Superman.
03:14It would also make Luthor and Batman more similar than the latter would care to admit.
03:18Number 7. A Shared Universe. Superman and Batman.
03:27Before cinematic universes were mainstream or the superhero genre took over Hollywood,
03:32there were two gold standards.
03:341978's Superman and 1989's Batman.
03:38Both franchises had a similar trajectory, each inspiring one good sequel and two bad ones.
03:43Some fans like to think that they had an even closer link, believing they took place in the same universe.
03:49Easy, miss. I've got you.
03:51You've got me? Who's got you?
03:53Christopher Reeve offered to appear in Tim Burton's film, although this idea wasn't taken seriously.
03:59While Reeve's subsequent accident ruled out the possibility of him ever starring opposite Batman,
04:03DC has seemingly canonized this theory.
04:06Stop.
04:06Through the 2022 Dark Crisis comic book storyline,
04:13it's established that the Burtonverse and Donnerverse are both part of Earth-789.
04:17This continuity also ignores the poorly received sequels,
04:21rewriting Batman and Superman's future adventures.
04:24Chicks dig their car.
04:26This is why Superman works alone.
04:28Number 6. A Kryptonite Inhaler. Superman Returns.
04:32Taking place in the same continuity as the first two Christopher Reeve movies,
04:36Superman returns to find that Lois now has a young son named Jason.
04:40While Lois claims that Richard White is the father,
04:43Jason's true parentage is verified after he smashes a henchman with a piano.
04:53It's unclear if Lois always knew that Superman was the father,
04:57although this theory implies that she did.
04:59Not only that, but she went to unethical lengths to conceal the secret.
05:03She did so by lacing Jason's inhaler with Kryptonite,
05:07weakening him just enough to keep his powers under control.
05:12Hello.
05:16Some might argue that Lois wouldn't do that to her own son.
05:19After demonstrating his powers, though,
05:21Jason's second guess is using his inhaler.
05:24Is he connecting the dots?
05:25Number 5. Clark Kent's Nerdiness Isn't An Act
05:34On the surface, he's mild-mannered Clark Kent.
05:37Behind the poindexter persona is the Man of Steel.
05:40It's often said that Clark Kent is merely a mask,
05:43and Superman allows him to be his true self.
05:46David Carradine has an entire monologue about this in Kill Bill Volume 2.
05:49When Superman wakes up in the morning, he's Superman.
05:53His alter ego is Clark Kent.
05:56What if it's the other way around, though?
05:58This theory claims that Superman has always been a nerd,
06:01going back to his upbringing in Smallville.
06:03Admittedly, the humble farm boy struggling to fit in with his peers
06:06more closely resembles the introverted Daily Planet reporter
06:09than the confident Superman.
06:10I'm sorry, Lana.
06:13I guess I better clean it up.
06:14Maybe Clark's dorkiness isn't an act.
06:17Perhaps he is an awkward bookworm at heart.
06:19Once he puts on the super suit,
06:21Clark puts up the facade of a fearless hero.
06:24You okay?
06:25Uh-huh.
06:27Number 4. The Manipulation of Martha
06:29Batman vs. Superman Dawn of Justice
06:32You're letting him kill Martha!
06:38Save Martha!
06:40It's the line that launched a million memes,
06:42going down as one of the most infamous in the DCEU.
06:45Many found it laughable that Batman suddenly abandons his vendetta against Superman
06:50because their mothers share the same name.
06:52Why did you say that name?
06:54Find him!
06:58Save Martha!
07:02For that matter,
07:03was Superman expecting Batman to know who Martha was?
07:06Well, maybe.
07:07According to one theory,
07:08Superman already knew that Batman was Bruce Wayne.
07:11He was also familiar with Bruce's childhood tragedy.
07:13When Superman says that name,
07:15he isn't just talking about his mom.
07:17He's trying to trigger Batman's trauma
07:19by mentioning his late mother's name.
07:21Some may say that's a stretch,
07:23but it would explain why Superman didn't say something more specific
07:26like save my mother or save Martha Kent.
07:29It's okay.
07:30I'm a friend of your sons.
07:31Number 3.
07:32Superman is a plant?
07:34What do Superman and Poison Ivy have in common?
07:37More than you think.
07:38At least going by this theory.
07:39We all know that Superman gets his powers from Earth's yellow sun.
07:43So naturally,
07:43that must mean that Superman is a plant, right?
07:52It sounds silly,
07:53but there is some scientific backing to this hypothesis.
07:56Through photosynthesis,
07:58plants convert sunlight and other sources of light energy
08:00into chemical energy.
08:02We suppose Clark's powers operate similarly,
08:04but it doesn't entirely hold water.
08:06It's not like Kryptonians sprout out of the ground.
08:09Good luck, brother.
08:13In Action Comics number 149,
08:16it's even established that Krypton had Orgus plants.
08:19So would that mean that plants could own other plants on Krypton?
08:22Plus, if Superman were a plant,
08:24Kryptonite wouldn't be his only weakness.
08:27Now fly.
08:31Number 2.
08:32Kryptonian glasses.
08:33The glasses,
08:34because the glasses have always bothered me.
08:36As a kid, they bothered me.
08:38Some heroes wear a mask to conceal their secret identities.
08:41Clark Kent wears glasses.
08:43We've all made fun of this comic book logic.
08:45Even James Gunn's film acknowledges
08:47that they might not fool everybody forever.
08:49Of course, Gunn's film also threw out the idea
08:51that our hero has hypnoglasses,
08:53making Clark and Superman appear like different people to the public.
08:56It's just that he wears hypnoglasses.
08:59They make his face terrific.
09:00How do they work?
09:01They make his face look different in your brain when he wears them?
09:04This aligns with a popular theory that Superman's glasses were constructed with Kryptonian technology,
09:09making for a more convincing disguise than you might assume.
09:12A few comics have also alluded to this.
09:14One published in 1978 even directly states that his glasses are made of Kryptonian plexiglass.
09:20While aspects of Superman's lore have changed over the decades,
09:24Gunn is making the hypnoglasses official.
09:26But, uh, he said, you know, there's an answer for that in the comics.
09:30It's canon that they're hypnoglasses.

09:48Number 1. Superman Flashpoint
09:50Superman
09:51The most revered Superman movie also contains the franchise's most notorious twist.
09:56After losing Lois Lane, Superman reverses time by spinning the world backward.
10:02There are numerous reasons why this doesn't add up,
10:11although that hasn't stopped some fans from trying to make sense of it.
10:14The most logical explanation is that Superman didn't literally spin the world back.
10:18Like the Flash, he moved so fast that he traveled through time.
10:22Turning the Earth around was just symbolic.
10:25Even if that were the case, Superman would still need to get both missiles,
10:29which he always should have been able to do if he were fast enough to alter time.
10:33Hi.
10:36Don't bother, I think it's dead.
10:37Would that also mean there's an alternate Superman out there?
10:40That would explain Superman 3 a little.
10:43You always wanted to fly, Kent.
10:45Now's your chance.
10:49What's the wildest Superman theory you've ever heard?
10:51Let us know in the comments.
