00:00I've tried to reason with you. I've tried to show you there's another way.
00:04Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most insane times
00:08Superman stripped back the blue Boy Scout image and really let loose in comics, films, and TV shows.
00:16Lex, I tried to stop him.
00:18It's fine, mother.
00:19Superman, we finally meet. Would you like a coffee?
00:21Where's the dog?
00:22Number 30. Dark Side Destroyer, Superman the Animated Series.
00:27I can't believe he's blood.
00:28You used me.
00:30I told you once, Superman. If you would not be my knight, you would be my pawn.
00:36I see you're a man of your word.
00:37In the final episode of this cult classic show, the creators gave us what we desperately desired,
00:43a full-blown bout between Superman and Dark Side.
00:46In Legacy Part 1, Supes had been brainwashed to think he was the adopted son of Apocalypse's ruler.
00:52You've done well, son.
00:53Thank you, father.
00:54As you say, it is our destiny to bring peace and order to the universe.
01:03In Part 2, he gets his memories back and is really mad.
01:07After defeating Granny Goodness, the female Furies, and Calibac with ease, Superman battles Dark Side.
01:13However, he's weakened due to the lack of yellow sun energy in the previous battles.
01:17As Dark Side taunts Superman about killing those he loves, Clark blocks his Omega Beams with his hands, causing an explosion.
01:35With a broken Dark Side, Superman throws him to the slaves, expecting some form of crowd justice.
01:42Instead, they look after their ruler.
01:44I am many things, Gal.
01:46But here, I am God.
01:49Number 29.
01:50Absolute Power.
01:51Superman Batman Number 15.
01:54Usually when Superman and Batman team up, they do so heroically and with as few casualties as possible.
02:00Did you find the spear?
02:02I've been a little busy.
02:03During the 2005 comic story Absolute Power in Superman Batman, that wasn't the case.
02:09The duo had their lives changed when future villains Lightning Lord, Saturn Queen, and Cosmic King went back in time to manipulate their origins, raising them to be their weapons.
02:18At one point, this involved Superman vaporizing Green Arrow.
02:22However, when Wonder Woman raised a resistance against their rule, she ended up taking Batman's life.
02:27Clark, now enraged, held nothing back as he took her life with her own lasso.
02:32He then applied similar gestures to the rest of her team.
02:36Yikes.
02:37Number 28.
02:38Yellow Lantern Superman.
02:40Injustice Gods Among Us Year 2, Number 24.
02:43In a world where Superman snaps and becomes a dictator, there are plenty of times he lets loose in the comic series.
02:49But none is quite as effortless as this.
02:52After Black Canary tries to assassinate him, Superman is inducted into the Yellow Lanterns, as he can instill great fear.
02:58This allows him to remove the Green Kryptonite bullet, causing him to seemingly kill her.
03:04But he's not done.
03:05A powered-up Clark cleaves through the Green Lanterns, coming face-to-face with Ganthet.
03:10After shrugging off the Guardian's lethal attack, Superman slams him into the sentient planet and Green Lantern powerhouse member Mogo.
03:17Despite both blasting Clark, he pushes the two into the sun.
03:22Number 27.
03:23Cousin Revenge.
03:24Superman Batman Apocalypse.
03:26If there's anything to take from this video for villains, never attack Superman's loved ones.
03:32In the 2010 animated film Superman Batman Apocalypse, Darkseid didn't heed this warning as he captured his cousin, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, brainwashing her into the Furies.
03:43Let's go home.
03:46That's the problem, cousin.
03:48I'm not sure where home is.
03:50When she's later released, Darkseid arrives to attack Earth.
03:53After whacking Superman into space, Darkseid and Kara battle furiously.
03:58There's more where that came from.
04:00Fearless, untapped power.
04:03It would have been a glorious life for you, captain of my honor card.
04:07Instead, my omega beams will reduce you to ashes.
04:12Take your best shot.
04:13He eventually knocks her out.
04:14Now enraged by the attack on his cousin, Supes flies in and combats Darkseid, devastating the landscape.
04:21Just as Darkseid gets the upper hand, Kara opens a mother box, allowing Superman to blast him into the portal with the threat that if he returned, he won't be going back to Apocalypse.
04:31Don't ever come here again, or you won't be going back.
04:36Often, comic covers can be misleading about what actually happens in the panels.
04:49However, 1988's cover of issue 22 of Superman barely did this.
04:54Essentially, all that was misdirection was the hood.
04:57It features a tale that had notorious Kryptonian criminals General Zod, Zayora, and Quexel running rampant in the pocket universe, laying waste to the Earth and its heroes.
05:07Superman was alerted to the danger and entered to stop them.
05:10With the Kryptonite not affecting him as it's from this universe, Superman used gold Kryptonite to take away the trio's powers.
05:17However, after they declared they would get their powers back and would destroy Superman's Earth, he whipped out the green Kryptonite, taking their lives.
05:25Zayora even offering services as she perished was haunting.
05:30Number 25, Half Doomsday, Superman Doomed Number One
05:34Doomsday is one of Superman's biggest baddies.
05:37He constantly evolves, making weaknesses no longer a problem.
05:46Well, in the 2014 Doomed comic story, he took things up to a massive level.
05:52Simply by being in his vicinity, material will disintegrate due to his toxins.
05:57This caused him to wipe out a million animals within a day, making the wildebeest endangered and severely injuring heroes and killing civilians.
06:05When Superman faced him, he had no choice but to go all out against the behemoth as he took Doomsday into space.
06:11Even though he incinerated the creature, Doomsday came back for more.
06:16With no choice, Superman tore Doomsday in half, inhaling the ashes and becoming infected with the Doomsday virus.
06:23Number 24, The Solar Flare, Superman Number 38
06:27Superman is well known for having a lot of OP abilities.
06:31However, none of those comes close to his solar flare.
06:34In the 2015 story, The Men of Tomorrow, Clark met Ulysses, a character who shares a similar origin to his.
06:41However, when Superman inadvertently destroys Ulysses' great world, the two go to battle as Ulysses announces his intention to obliterate Earth.
06:49During it, Clark blasts him with his trusty heat vision.
06:53However, with Supes using his heat vision to its limit, the new solar flare power erupts.
06:58All of Clark's cells send out their stored solar energy, causing a massive wave of explosive force.
07:04If Ulysses were not superhuman, he'd have been turned to dust, just like the landscape was.
07:10Number 23, Infected Superman, Deceased Number 5
07:14In a world where a corrupt anti-life equation has essentially turned people into zombies,
07:19there's drama and darkness at every turn in the comic series Deceased.
07:23Superman becomes infected when taking out a rampaging flash.
07:26Before he can get far enough away from Earth, the equation takes over,
07:30turning the planet's biggest hitter into its worst nightmare.
07:33This infected Superman obliterates a New York City building with survivors within.
07:38He then levels most of the city.
07:41Even after Wonder Woman battles him with a green kryptonite magic sword,
07:44Superman still infects her.
07:46Next, he tries to stop the survivors from leaving, only being stopped by his son.
07:51When the numbers against him are too much,
07:53Superman goes into the sun and slowly drains it.
07:57Number 22, Destroying the World Forger's Multiverse, Justice League Number 25
08:02With the Legion of Doom and the multiverse creating celestial Perpetua threatening existence,
08:07Superman entered the sixth dimension in the same named 2019 story to stop them.
08:12However, within moments, an older Superman appears.
08:15That wasn't Clark, but Perpetua's son Alpheus, aka the World Forger.
08:20The real Superman was trapped by him on a barren sunless planet,
08:24filled with the remains of other Superman, as his power and essence deplete.
08:29After the Justice League realizes the deception,
08:31Batman manages to get Yellow Suns into the prison.
08:34Clark quickly begins to supercharge, so much so that his flight can be heard across dimensions.
08:40He lays up a punch that not only clocks Alpheus, but destroys the multiverse he had created.
08:44Number 21, Superman Smash, Marvel vs. DC Number 3
08:49In the biggest crossover event of the century,
08:53the publishing juggernauts of Marvel and DC smashed their universes together in 1996.
08:59With a story that one universe would end, a competition was put together,
09:02giving fans a chance to see matchups they'd only dreamed about.
09:05In issue 3, one of Marvel's strongest heroes, Hulk, took on DC's equivalent, Superman.
09:12With the battle taking place in the Grand Canyon, the duo could go to town.
09:16The Hulk holds little back with furious strikes and shrugs off mullet-haired Superman's heat vision.
09:21Fearing for his loved one's existences,
09:24Supes lets his full might out with a single punch across the Hulk's head,
09:27knocking the beast unconscious, a feat very few have replicated.
09:31Number 20, Stopping President Luther
09:34Superman-Batman Public Enemies
09:37While the evil genius isn't usually a physical match for the Man of Steel,
09:41the antagonist was able to even the odds with the help of Kryptonite and a powerful suit.
09:46Lex initially overwhelmed Superman in a direct fight,
09:49but when the villain's plans seemingly lead to Batman's demise,
09:52the rage-filled Kryptonian lashes out.
09:54That was my best friend.
09:58And you just killed him.
10:00Superman completely disregards Kryptonite-enhanced lasers so he can break Luther's suit.
10:08When the villain was at a vulnerable position,
10:10Superman gave his foe an express ticket to the ground and disabled the suit.
10:15None of Lex's considerable brainpower could save him from the hero's beast mode beatdown.
10:20And I am the president!
10:23Consider yourself...
10:26Impeached.
10:30Number 19, Wrecking One Final Robot
10:33My Adventures with Superman
10:35Before Clark started saving everyone as a world-famous hero,
10:39he was just another Daily Planet intern that wanted to be normal.
10:43When his co-workers Lois and Jimmy get targeted by a big robot during an investigation,
10:47the Kryptonian leaned into his super-heritage to save them.
10:50Clark got off to a great start by dispatching a mechanical monstrosity with strength and smarts.
10:55Unfortunately, he got hurt when multiple robots were sent after him at once.
11:00Once Clark saw Lois was in grave danger,
11:03he pushed past his wounds and limits and reached an entirely new level of power.
11:07No!
11:07No!
11:07No!
11:08No!
11:09No!
11:10No!
11:11No!
11:12No!
11:13No!
11:14No!
11:15No!
11:16No!
11:17His final punch even sent the robot towards the stratosphere.
11:21This victory served as an early sign that this version of Clark was a powerhouse.
11:27A normal man having a normal day, huh?
11:33Who am I?
11:35Number 18, Lifting an Island
11:37Superman Returns
11:39RIP tonight
11:40RIP tonight
11:40RIP tonight
11:41RIP tonight
11:45You're asking yourself
11:47A twisted scheme from Lex Luthor resulted in the creation of a huge island that was made out of constantly growing crystals and kryptonite.
11:56In order to stop the landmass from permanently damaging the earth, Superman decided to pick it up and put it down in space.
12:03The fact that he was able to lift something island-sized is impressive on its own.
12:08But what makes this feat more impressive is the knowledge that his greatest weakness was expanding within the landmass too.
12:14Although Superman should have been too weak to even think about lifting,
12:17He defied expectations and did not stop until the terrible island had been sent into the vacuum of space.
12:24His unbreakable willpower showed everyone why he was nicknamed the Man of Steel.
12:29You will make my strength your own.
12:34You will see my life through your eyes.
12:38Number 17, Beating Bizarro
12:40Superman and Lois
12:42During this superhero series, we're introduced to a bizarro Man of Steel that has all the strengths of Superman with slightly different powers and weaknesses.
12:51He inevitably found himself trading blows with a traditional version of the Kryptonian.
12:55You will, squad.
12:59I'm not gonna let you kill anyone else.
13:01The classic Superman punched Bizarro through buildings and unleashed tons of abilities.
13:07When powers alone didn't do the trick, the good Clark took advantage of his enemy's weakness to a substance called X-Kryptonite.
13:14Superman decided to hold two of the crystals in his hand and to not stop punching until Bizarro was unconscious.
13:20Clark's vicious tactics kept his enemy from committing more acts of violence.
13:24I should have killed you.
13:25You tried, more than once.
13:29Number 16, Crushing Captain Marvel, aka Shazam, Justice League Unlimited
13:34After Lex Luthor built a mysterious device underneath a city, Superman was unwilling to let it operate freely.
13:41But when the Kryptonian tried to stop it, Captain Marvel defended the villain's invention.
13:46You can't just...
13:49That's it. No more Mr. Nice Guy.
13:54It didn't take long before a verbal disagreement turned into an all-out brawl between the godlike heroes.
14:01Although Captain Marvel's combination of formidable strength and magical powers was a problem,
14:06Superman kept overwhelming his foe at every turn.
14:09The fight led to the savage moment where the Man of Steel forced Shazam to get hit by magical lightning.
14:15We understand exactly why Captain Marvel resigned from the Justice League after this brutal clash.
14:21She's...
14:21Fight's over, son.
14:23Number 15, Reversing the Earth's Rotation, Superman.
14:27There was a moment where it appeared that Christopher Reeves' Superman had lost Lois Lane due to a tragic accident.
14:33After holding her in his arms, the Man of Steel realized that he couldn't accept her death.
14:38Overcome with emotion, Superman flew into space and moved so fast that he reversed the rotation of the Earth.
14:45His beast mode actions broke the natural laws of physics and allowed him to reverse time.
14:51Once Superman went back far enough, he casually started moving forward in time and returned to find that Lois was alive again.
14:57Although the science of how any of that worked was questionable, his speedy time travel made for an undeniably iconic sequence.
15:06Hi.
15:08Don't bother, I think it's dead.
15:10Number 14, Making Mongol Pay, Justice League Unlimited.
15:14The villainous Mongol thought he could trap Superman in a fantasy world and get away with it.
15:19But as soon as the hero was freed from the villain's trap, the extremely angry Clark flew to get revenge.
15:26Do you have any idea what you did to me?
15:33Superman mercilessly smacked Mongol around with truly vicious hits.
15:37The hero also inflicted pain with his heat vision.
15:40At one point, Superman pummeled Mongol so hard that the villain's face was literally bent out of shape.
15:48Do you know what I've lost?
15:54What I've...
15:56Clark's friends eventually stepped in and trapped the antagonist in a twisted fantasy.
16:01But if Superman's battle had continued, he might not have shown Mongol any mercy.
16:06Number 13, An Unjust Superman Stops Holding Back, Injustice.
16:12Once it becomes clear a murderous variant of Superman won't stop killing,
16:16a good version of the Man of Steel is brought from another dimension.
16:19I'm deeply sorry for your losses, but you're on the wrong side of this.
16:23No one is talking me out of this.
16:26Not even you.
16:27After words fail to reach the corrupt Kryptonian, the two trade blows and lasers.
16:32The good Clark gets the upper hand at first.
16:35But when the twisted Superman gets backed into a corner, he stops holding back.
16:39The unjust Kryptonian tosses his opponent around the world.
16:43Not only does this twisted Superman uppercut his opponent into space,
16:47he also smacks the good Clark down into the earth.
16:50It takes a surprise visit from a variant of Lois Lane to calm this corrupted hero down.
16:55We're honestly unsure if the good Superman could have stopped his relentless and unjust counterpart.
17:01Number 12, Stomping Out Steppenwolf, Zack Snyder's Justice League.
17:05From the moment Superman arrived to confront Steppenwolf, it was abundantly clear who would come out on top.
17:12For Darkseid, not impressed.
17:21Although the villain had killed Amazons and Atlanteans with his axe,
17:24the weapon was an utter joke to the Man of Steel.
17:27Superman continued to embarrass Steppenwolf by outspeeding and overpowering the antagonist with virtually no effort.
17:33And, to add insult to injury, Superman deliberately lasers off one of the villain's horns.
17:39We almost felt bad that Steppenwolf ended up on the wrong side of this absolute slaughter.
17:44But he should have known better than to mess with Earth when this incredible Superman was around.
17:51Number 11, Thrashing Darkseid, Justice League Dark, Apocalypse War.
17:57In this grim tale, Darkseid rendered Superman powerless before dumping the hero on a dying Earth.
18:03When the Man of Steel got his abilities back, he harnessed all his pent-up rage to deliver a harsh beating.
18:09Superman unleashed a flurry of devastating blows, and even punched Darkseid when the villain was down.
18:16You took everything from me!
18:20Now, I'm gonna make you pay!
18:23When the antagonist tried to use his famous Omega Beams,
18:27Clark attempted to perform some impromptu eye surgery to stop the villain.
18:31Superman's righteous rampage was only interrupted when the sinister Trigon tagged himself into the battle.
18:37Go!
18:39Unless you would fight me for the right to destroy him.
18:43Darkseid was lucky that a fellow villain spared him from Superman's immeasurable wrath.
18:47Number 10, Supercharging Himself with Solar Power, Superman and Lois.
18:53Allie Alston aimed to become all-powerful by merging two worlds together.
18:57To make matters worse, she drained Superman of all his powers.
19:02With two Earths hanging in the balance, Clark volunteered to be thrown into the sun to get his abilities back.
19:08Are you sure this is gonna work?
19:09I've never been more unsure about anything in my entire life.
19:14But I have to believe it well.
19:15Superman withstands the power of the star and emerges more formidable than he ever was before.
19:21He's so mighty that he actually encourages Allie to try and absorb the immense power he held within his body.
19:27After it becomes too much for her to handle, he defeats two versions of the villain and captures them.
19:32For his victory lap, Clark flies around two Earths and unleashes the solar energy within him.
19:38The supercharged Superman's actions shone brighter than the sun itself.
19:42Number 9, Killing Brainiac, Smallville.
20:01When you're a teenager, it can be tough to manage your emotions.
20:04But add to that superpowers and a psychotic supervillain, and you've got a recipe for some serious mayhem.
20:10As Brainiac is cornered by teenage Superman, the maniac teases him, knowing that whatever he does, he'll have the last laugh.
20:18In a fit of rage, Clark sends him flying into an electrical grid.
20:22He then shoves cables through his chest, frying the villain from the inside out.
20:26He didn't just want to finish Brainiac, he wanted him to suffer.
20:46Number 8, Cranky Superman, Batman the Brave and the Bold.
20:49Kryptonite can't only remove the Man of Steel's powers.
20:53With a color change, this material can wreak arguably worse havoc.
20:57During Battle of the Superheroes, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen are tricked by Lex Luthor into exposing Superman to red kryptonite.
21:04This drastically changes his personality to that of a sadistic, heartless, grade-A meanie.
21:09He tries to kill Toyman, disowns Krypto the Superdog, and becomes the self-proclaimed king of Metropolis.
21:15Now hear this, citizens of Metropolis! I am in charge now! Kneel before King Superman!
21:24He completely disregards and actively seeks to kill his friends, but Batman manages to stop him before he can do too much damage.
21:32Are you alright?
21:33Yes, I think so. I'm sorry, Batman. I don't know what came over me.
21:40Number 7, Superman Awakens, Zack Snyder's Justice League.
21:43Get down!
21:45In perhaps the most anticipated moment in the Justice League movie,
21:54Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Cyborg, and Batman all join forces to resurrect a dead Kal-El to prepare for Steppenwolf's invasion.
22:02But, as he wakes up, he's got a little more than the morning crankies.
22:06Kal-El, no!
22:07Completely turning against his allies, Superman pummels everyone on the team, dropping them one by one, completely outmatching their abilities.
22:24With Batman being the last left standing, Supes drops him down to size with some devastating heat vision, which not even the bat's gauntlet can fully absorb.
22:32It's only when Lois Lane arrives that he's able to snap out of his raging state.
22:45Otherwise, things might have gotten a bit out of hand.
22:48Number 6, Clark Kent vs. Evil Superman, Superman 3.
22:53Superman Breaks Bad Again
22:55After being exposed to synthetic kryptonite, Superman gets drunk and starts wreaking havoc.
23:01When the good-natured Clark Kent splits from him, things start to get serious.
23:05The two duke it out, dealing savage, super-powered blows to each other.
23:22What's particularly notable about this moment is that while we expect evil Superman to get savage,
23:27his good side doesn't hold back either, tossing his dark counterpart into a pool of acid.
23:35Eventually, Kent gets the upper hand and chokes out his other self, allowing the two to fuse and become whole again.
23:55Number 5, Superman Takes Down Doomsday, The Death of Superman
24:00I don't know what hole you crawled out of, or where you came from, but I'm sending you back.
24:08Every time the Blue Boy Scout takes on one of the universe's deadliest aliens, we know we're in for an awesome scene.
24:14Seeing Supes pick up a kryptonite spear and beat Doomsday after being impaled was pretty fantastic.
24:20However, Clark gets an even more impressive moment in the animated movie.
24:24After Doomsday defeats all of the Justice League, Superman becomes Earth's last stand against the beastly Doomsday.
24:31The Kryptonian eventually gives everything in his body to attack the villain one last time.
24:36Superman's final blow breaks his foe's neck instantly.
24:40Although Clark doesn't survive the battle, he won the war against Doomsday in an absolutely beastly way.
24:46Is he?
24:48Yes.
24:49You did it.
24:52Number 4, Killing General Zod, Man of Steel
24:55Many stories about this invincible hero tend to be more about moral choices than overcoming the odds.
25:01As a result, going beast mode in this entry didn't mean losing his temper, but breaking the one rule that separates him from his enemies.
25:09If you love these people so much, you can mourn for them.
25:16Kal-El gets General Zod in a headlock, but Zod is about to kill a trapped family, and Superman faces a difficult decision.
25:24In a move that proved controversial, Superman crosses a line that he never thought he would.
25:30He gives in and savagely breaks his fellow Kryptonian's neck, leaving him lifeless on the floor.
25:35Superman may have saved lives, but he had to dig into a dark place to do it.
25:50Number 3, Superman Overwhelms the Kryptonians, Superman 2
25:54Christopher Reeves' portrayal of the hero was more optimistic and less edgy than more recent interpretations.
26:00This is why Superman taking down his enemies when they're helpless seems so darkly out of character.
26:06After cornering him in the Fortress of Solitude, Zod orders Superman into a crystal chamber, hoping to expose him to red sunlight and remove his powers.
26:15However, Superman planned for this.
26:18He reversed the process, exposing his enemies while keeping himself safe, leaving them entirely powerless.
26:24He crushes Zod's hand with an iron grip and sends him falling into an endless pit, his posse joining him shortly after.
26:32Afterward, Kent can't help but smirk as it all came together.
26:36Hey, you know something?
26:39You're a real pain in the neck.
26:44Number 2, Superman vs. Darkseid, Justice League Unlimited
26:49Excuse me.
26:50Since Superman is so powerful, it can be hard to know if he's using his full capabilities.
27:01That wasn't in question during the acclaimed animated series Justice League Unlimited
27:05when Kal-El comes face-to-face with the Lord of Apocalypse.
27:08That man won't quit as long as he can still draw a breath.
27:11None of my teammates will.
27:13Me? I've got a different problem.
27:15Lecturing him about how delicate his world is,
27:22the Dark God starts to realize what he's gotten himself into
27:26as our red and blue protector sends shockwaves across the city.
27:29Here, we as the audience get a glimpse of what a pissed-off Superman looks like.

27:53Number 1, Superman Loses It, Superman vs. The Elite
27:58Never wonder what would happen if Superman lost it?
28:01Enter Manchester Black and his team, The Elite.
28:04This superhuman gang thinks that killing is the best way to deliver justice and keep the peace.
28:09Our Boy Scout disagrees, and the two come to blows.
28:23Superman is sent into a seizure by Black's psychic abilities and then blasted into oblivion.
28:28Or so it seems.
28:29He takes out the team one by one, declaring that killing is the answer after all.
28:35He even burns out part of Black's brain.
28:37Fortunately, it was all a trick to isolate and remove their powers.
28:41Well, except Black's lobotomy.
28:43That was real.
28:44And now we know that if Superman gave in to his darker instincts,
28:48no one would stand a chance.
