00:00This is the only way I can save Earth.
00:03The only way I can save you.
00:05If that's the only way, I don't want to be saved.
00:08Welcome to WatchMojo.
00:10And today we're counting down our picks for those most emotionally heart-wrenching moments from the Rick and Morty universe.
00:15Beware, major spoilers lie ahead.
00:17The point is, happiness always ends.
00:22Number 30. Rickbot's death and Rick's monologue.
00:25Alas, poor Rickbot.
00:27We knew him, but tragically not for very long.
00:30This version of Rick Sanchez, now with 22% more empathy,
00:33was put in place by Rick C-137,
00:36while the latter was off in pursuit of Rick Prime.
00:38You had one job.
00:39Hey, that job was to be a good grandpa.
00:41I go where the kid goes.
00:42Don't touch me!
00:43How long have I...
00:44You said you weren't a robot!
00:46It killed me to lie to you, Morty.
00:47But it would have literally killed me not to lie to you.
00:50This doesn't make his demise in Ricktionalmorpoon's Rickmismorkation any less of a bummer.
00:54Particularly since it feels so sincere.
00:56Additionally, Rickbot's mentioning that any good he does
01:00is essentially performed in the service of Rick C-137,
01:03really his home.
01:04Meanwhile, the closing monologue suggests that Season 7
01:07will finally see Rick and Morty closing the gap
01:10between C-137 and Prime.
01:12Welcome to my darkness.
01:14I spent my life hunting this guy, Morty.
01:16This is the closest I've ever been to catching Rick Prime.
01:19It's impossible!
01:20Number 29. The final trap room.
01:23Ah, there's nothing like a classic bait-and-switch
01:25to manipulate and control those emotional puppet strings, right?
01:28The climax of this third season episode,
01:30Vindicators 3 The Return of Worldender,
01:32initially leads us to believe that the final puzzle trap solution is Morty.
01:37It could be Morty.
01:38What?
01:39Hey, I don't know.
01:40I mean, look, when I get drunk, I get stupid and emotional,
01:43and there's no logic to it.
01:44It's like, it's possible I got so drunk,
01:46I felt like I was losing Morty to the Vindicators.
01:48This is because the question demands to know
01:51which aspect of the Vindicators is truly valued by Rick.
01:54Unfortunately, the correct answer is actually Noob Noob,
01:57a humble janitor whom we met earlier in the episode.
02:00You're probably confused because we barely know each other,
02:02but you really stuck your neck out
02:04when you gave me props for my awesome jokes in the briefing room.
02:07Everybody else had their heads so far up their ass,
02:09even my own grandson is like,
02:11oh, the Vindicators are so cool.
02:13I mean, he's a moron. That's their demographic.
02:16But you're different, Noob Noob.
02:18Granted, this whole set-up could have been just because
02:20Rick was extremely drunk when he set up the trap,
02:22but yeah, we wouldn't put anything past Sanchez.
02:25Number 28, Morty is Assaulted.
02:27This debut season of Rick and Morty
02:29proved that anything was on the table in terms of content,
02:32including some really disturbing implications.
02:34I accept your call to adventure, good sir, kind sir.
02:38Come on, Rick, there's a giant in the clouds.
02:40Yeah, beginner's luck.
02:42One of the two plots within this episode
02:44concerns Morty taking Rick on an adventure of his own choosing,
02:47one that leads to a traditional RPG-esque fantasy world.
02:50A whole lot of tragedy ensues,
02:52from a giant's family witnessing the horrible demise of their patriarch
02:55to a local Jellybean King assaulting Morty in a restroom.
02:58It's troubling stuff, to be sure,
03:00but at least Rick eliminates King Jellybean
03:02before he departs from this failed adventure.
03:04Rick, portal, hurry!
03:07Number 27, Rick Puts Jerry on Blast.
03:10The subject of Beth and Jerry's broken marriage
03:12has been explored in multiple episodes throughout Rick and Morty.
03:15It also didn't take long for Rick to put Jerry on blast for his behavior.
03:18There are some major issues between you and Beth
03:21that have been there since you guys met.
03:24Hey, to new beginnings.
03:27To the whirly-dirly.
03:29The whirly-dirly? All right, what's going on here?
03:33When did you get cool?
03:35This can be seen within a wicked monologue from the third season episode,
03:38The Whirly-Dirly Conspiracy.
03:40Jerry's loneliness feels palpable after his separation from Beth,
03:43yet it's during an adventure alongside Rick
03:46where the former conspires to kill the man that Jerry feels stole his life.
03:49This later omission causes Rick to fly off the proverbial rails,
03:52spouting a diatribe that even causes the snake-thing eating Jerry
03:56to momentarily stop and react to the insult.
03:59You act like prey, but you're a predator.
04:01You use pity to lure in your victims. It's how you survive.
04:04Number 26, Shouldering Jerry's Burden.
04:06Never underestimate the shadows of the mind
04:09of how sometimes the most frightening things
04:11lie just beyond our rational sight.
04:13This is a cool car. I like having fun.
04:15That's what I'm talking about. Keep it moving.
04:17Don't ask why I can talk.
04:18We never see what Rick and Jerry see
04:20after the former scans the mind of a talking cat
04:22to find out why this feline can speak.
04:24What the audience is made aware of
04:26is that the reasoning is apparently so horrible
04:29that it drives both Rick and Jerry to the brink of madness.
04:32The latter even physically vomits from the experience,
04:35and Rick uncharacteristically assists Jerry
04:37by wiping his mind from what just occurred,
04:39leaving Sanchez to shoulder the burden.
04:41Did we crash? Where's the cat?
04:44He, uh, ran away.
04:46Did you scan his brain?
04:47Yeah.
04:48Did you find out why he can talk?
04:49He's from outer space.
04:50Number 25, Rick's Rejection by Bird Person.
04:53There's a lot to emotionally unpack
04:55within the fifth season episode,
04:57Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort.
04:59Suggestion, conscious mind relocated to...
05:02Unconscious mind. Fine, I'm going in.
05:04Suggestion, don't go in.
05:06On one hand, we're glad to see Bird Person again,
05:09as Rick moves within his friend's mind
05:11to bring him back in the best friend rejuvenation sequence.
05:13We also see a lot of Rick's traumatic, repressed memories,
05:16including a battle he'd previously fought alongside Bird Person.
05:20Rick's pleas for more adventures with Bird Person are denied,
05:23with the latter taking a lot of umbrage at the fact
05:25that Rick held back information about Bird Person's daughter.
05:28You did not know of the child when you came to rescue me,
05:31and once aware, refrained from sharing
05:33until necessary to save yourself.
05:36Fair enough.
05:37I will see you when I see you.
05:39This one is just a sad episode all around.
05:42Number 24, The Fear Hole.
05:44The death of Rick Prime didn't serve as the finale
05:46to Rick and Morty's seventh season.
05:48Instead, we ended that journey upon perhaps
05:50an even more dark and depressing existential hell.
05:53Well, it's definitely a hole. They weren't lying about that.
05:56Fear No Mort was a Twilight Zone-inspired episode
05:59that featured the Fear Hole,
06:00a place where Morty's greatest terrors come to life.
06:03This episode is chock-full of false endings.
06:06It isn't until Morty confronts his fear of abandonment
06:08that he's able to escape from the Fear Hole,
06:10realizing that Rick never followed him in the first place.
06:13However, we do see Rick pull a picture of Morty
06:16from his wallet to hang on the wall,
06:17which is a very telling sign.
06:19Okay, buddy. Let's go slam some pancakes.
06:34Number 23, Saving Marta.
06:37We're always pleasantly surprised when Rick Sanchez
06:39carefully allows his guard to drop,
06:41just enough to do something truly nice for another individual.
06:44Who is that?
06:45Her video game name is Marta.
06:47Okay, see, this I can work with.
06:49The episode, Rick, A Mort Well Lived,
06:52features a callback to the second-season episode,
06:54Morty Night Run,
06:55specifically a visit to the Interstellar Arcade,
06:57Blips and Chits.
06:58Rick and Morty go to the Interstellar Arcade
07:00Rick and Morty become trapped inside of Roy, A Life Well Lived,
07:03as Summer is tasked by Rick to do a diehard.
07:06Meanwhile, the decades of time spent within the game
07:09influence Rick's decision
07:10to keep it permanently plugged in after their escape.
07:13Special order.
07:14Some rich douche wants his last game to keep running.
07:17Hooked it up to an external battery.
07:18We're just supposed to store it.
07:19Weird.
07:20Yeah, and get this.
07:21The game's still going, but Roy's dead.
07:23What?
07:24Yeah, he's just a corpse
07:25floating at the edge out of space,
07:26but for some reason, the game won't restart
07:29because it's centered on some old lady living a full life.
07:31This is so that one of the NPCs, Marta,
07:34can live on within this imaginary world.
07:36Number 22, Pissmaster's Demise.
07:39Numerous oddly-named supervillains have come for Rick Sanchez,
07:42but, ahem, Pissmaster has to be one of the grossest
07:46and most profane.
07:47Rick, why is there a man shooting piss on our front lawn?
07:50I'm sure he'll tell you.
07:51I am Pissmaster,
07:53here to flush the toilet that is Rick Sanchez.
07:58Not to mention easily beatable, apparently,
08:00since it's Jerry who beats the tar out of this bad guy,
08:03basically in front of the entire neighborhood.
08:05This incident leads to Pissmaster deciding to take his own life,
08:08leaving behind a daughter as well as a note
08:10that drives Rick into action.
08:12Sanchez decides to moonlight as Pissmaster,
08:14attempting to change the narrative of his legacy.
08:16Yo, Pissmaster, you saving that cat
08:18to make people forget you suck?
08:20Nope, you're just saving it to save it.
08:21Number 21, This Revenge Has Meant Nothing.
08:24It's a conversation that always comes up
08:26when it comes to journeys of revenge.
08:28Will success change anything, bring somebody back,
08:31or make the person seeking revenge feel whole or fulfilled?
08:34Morty, you can't come!
08:35Evil Morty, stay out of my way!
08:36Gonna kill my nemesis!
08:38Rick out!
08:39Perhaps this is why the episode,
08:40where Rick's C-137 finally destroys Rick Prime,
08:43is placed smack dab in the center of the seventh season.
08:46A proper revenge character arc
08:48would predictably have made un-Mort-Rick in the series finale,
08:51but we're still a long way from that point.
08:54So, uh, original grandson,
08:56this is super weird, obviously,
08:58we're both trying to kill each other.
09:00Oh, jeez, nice to meet you, I guess.
09:03So, do we... should I just get this over with, or...
09:07Instead, we have to face the fact that Rick's revenge,
09:09essentially, changes nothing.
09:11Evil Morty's backstory is revealed here,
09:13and we do receive a somewhat satisfying Rick Prime beatdown,
09:16but ultimately, Rick and Morty still draw on, unchanged.
09:20Number 20, Wubba Lubba Dub Dub Origins.
09:23Rick tries out several catchphrases during the show,
09:25but the one that's most prevalent
09:27is the seemingly nonsensical, Wubba Lubba Dub Dub.
09:30Wubba Lubba Dub Dubs!
09:32Ha ha ha, yeah!
09:33That's my new thing, I'm kinda like, what's his name?
09:35Arsenio!
09:36That's what Arsenio used to say on his show.
09:38He often delivers it after a joke,
09:40or to punctuate a moment.
09:41When Morty, Summer, and Rick throw a party,
09:43Rick says the phrase while doing drugs.
09:46After the party, Rick's buddy, Bird Person,
09:48explains to Morty that Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,
09:50in his people's language,
09:52means that Rick is saying he's in terrible pain,
09:54and asking for help.
09:55It's not nonsense at all.
09:57In my people's tongue, it means,
09:59I am in great pain, please help me.
10:01Well, I got news for ya, he's saying it ironically.
10:04Although Rick does some bonding with his grandkids
10:06that makes him less prone to using the phrase,
10:08it's still sad that he feels the need to numb himself
10:10to escape his own anguish.
10:12Your grandfather is indeed in very deep pain.
10:15That is why he must numb himself.
10:18Number 19, Snowball trying to save Morty.
10:20While Rick and Morty have an adventure
10:22in the latter's math teacher's dreams,
10:24the rest of the family must contend with their dog, Snuffles,
10:27who becomes hyper-intelligent.
10:29That's an intense line of questioning, Snuffles.
10:31Do not call me that.
10:34Snuffles was my slave name.
10:36You shall now call me Snowball,
10:38because my fur is pretty and white.
10:40Renaming himself Snowball,
10:42the dog creates a society of intelligent dogs,
10:44as well as mechanized suits.
10:46Rick and Morty return,
10:48and while Morty is well-treated,
10:50the rest of the world isn't so lucky.
10:52From now on, you will be my best friend
10:54and live by my side.
10:56Th-thanks, Snuffles!
10:57In order to gain Snowball's sympathy,
10:59Ricky gives Morty a pill that shuts down his kidneys.
11:02This deeply affects Snowball,
11:04who can't stand to see the human he loves in such a state.
11:07To hell with my kingdom, bean-counter.
11:09I would trade it all for my human's health and happiness.
11:13Do you think they would have done this for us?
11:15We are not them.
11:19We are not them.
11:21Most pet owners experience something similar at some point,
11:24so it's tragic to see the shoe on the other paw,
11:26so to speak, even if it's just a dream.
11:29Number 18, Morty Kills Fart.
11:31When Rick sells a gun to an assassin,
11:33Morty takes it upon himself to rescue the killer's target,
11:36a gaseous creature.
11:38Given the derogatory nickname, Fart by Rick,
11:40the bean proves fanciful and fond of musical interludes.
11:43The world can be one together,
11:45cosmos without hatred.
11:48However, just as Fart is about to return to his own kind through a portal,
11:52he reveals to Morty that he intends to return
11:55and exterminate all carbon-based life in Morty's universe.
11:58Morty asks for one last song,
12:00and then uses the distraction to shoot Fart with a special gun.
12:03Morty...
12:05Why? Why?
12:14Although the death of a mass murderer isn't particularly sad,
12:17our hearts go out to Morty,
12:19as this is the first time he takes a life.
12:21In a way, Morty has killed his innocence.
12:32Number 17, Rick's Car Conjures Up the Dead.
12:35Car trouble is exponentially upsetting in the Rick and Morty multiverse.
12:44While Rick and Morty investigate a problem inside the battery,
12:47Rick charges his car's AI to keep Summer safe.
12:50Rick's car does this through ruthless and incredibly violent methods.
12:54When the police arrive, Summer demands it stop hurting people.
12:57Instead, it arguably does something worse.
13:00After scanning the histories of each of the cops,
13:02the car synthesizes one cop's deceased son,
13:05forcing the creation to ask his father to leave the car alone
13:08before dissolving into a puddle of goo in the traumatized man's arms.
13:14Daddy, leave the car alone.
13:16What? What?
13:17Leave the car alone.
13:19Hunter?
13:21Oh, my God.
13:22To have a dead loved one come back to life and die in your arms again?
13:25There aren't words to describe that kind of trauma.
13:28That poor, poor man.
13:30Please step away from the vehicle.
13:33Keep Summer safe.
13:35Number 16, Jerry and Doofus Rick.
13:38Jerry is the family's sad sack,
13:40and even Ricks of other universes mock him.
13:42I can't believe our daughter married you.
13:44Too easy.
13:46However, one of them doesn't.
13:48A Rick with a bowl cut and buck teeth,
13:50nicknamed Doofus Rick by the others,
13:52befriends Jerry when a group of Ricks stay at the house.
13:54Doofus Rick is kind and appreciates Jerry's interests,
13:57even making him brownies.
13:59If we add a little more titanium nitrate
14:01and just a tad of chlorified tartrate,
14:04ovenless brownies.
14:07Their friendship is a welcome bit of wholesomeness
14:09in what can often be a profoundly cynical show.
14:11Unfortunately, it eventually comes time to say goodbye.
14:14It's time to go back to our lives.
14:17I love you, Jerry. I love ya.
14:19Seeing them stare at each other through a window
14:21gets us a little choked up.
14:23We're not crying. It's just raining.
14:25Number 15, Jerry and Beth view their alternate lives.
14:29The whole family watching Interdimensional Cable
14:31is an opportunity for some wacky,
14:33random shows, movies,
14:35and commercials from other realities.
14:37We're not so different. We're both corn of action.
14:39Yeah, but one of us is dead corn!
14:42However, Rick gives them a device
14:44that lets Beth and Jerry gain insight
14:46into alternate versions of their lives.
14:48In the universe they both view,
14:50Jerry becomes a successful actor,
14:52while Beth became a surgeon for humans instead of horses.
14:55However, they never got together.
14:57Well, you should select a different timeline.
14:59I mean, if your father and I achieved our dreams,
15:01there's a chance you weren't even born.
15:03That came out wrong. That came out very wrong.
15:05Seeing themselves supposedly happier without each other
15:07depresses them both,
15:09making them contemplate a separation.
15:11While their alternate selves reunite
15:13and they decide to stay together,
15:15it's clear neither is truly happy as things stand.
15:25Many of us wonder what our lives would look like
15:27if we made different choices,
15:29but being confronted with the reality of that
15:31would certainly mess with our heads.
15:3314. Mr. Poopybutthole's post-Season 5 speech
15:37Mr. Poopybutthole is a silly,
15:39short friend of Rick and the rest of the family.
15:49The wacky guy often bookends the seasons of the show
15:51by commenting on the events
15:53and talking about what he's been up to.
15:55In the last episode of Season 5,
15:57Mr. Poopybutthole reveals
15:59that after he lost his teaching job,
16:01he started distancing himself from his wife, Amy.
16:13His attempts to be who he thought
16:15she wanted him to be only made them both
16:17unhappier and led to their separation.
16:19Mr. Poopybutthole encourages us to be
16:21honest with the people who love us,
16:23because life is short.
16:25It's a heartbreakingly real moment for a comedy show.
16:27Ooh wee indeed.
16:31I don't know. Maybe you should try it.
16:33We don't have as much time as we think.
16:35Ooh wee.
16:3713. Rick's real backstory
16:39Rick avoids sharing details
16:41of his past, since he's not that
16:43big on canon. However,
16:45while details have leaked through to the audience,
16:47it isn't until the Season 5 finale that
16:49it's fully explained.
16:55The backstory Rick once claimed was fake,
16:57then another Rick offered him interdimensional travel,
16:59and killed Rick's original wife and daughter
17:01when he refused, was actually real.
17:03Rick spent decades pursuing his family's
17:05killer across universes, making enemies
17:07of other Ricks who banded together
17:09first against him, and then for him,
17:11creating the Citadel of Ricks.
17:13Now an old man, Rick decided to move in
17:15with an abandoned version of his daughter,
17:17hoping to have a version of the family he lost.
17:19Rick really is his own worst enemy.
17:21Woah.
17:23Dead wife?
17:25Yes, now everyone can shut up about it.
17:2712. Rick's a terrible father
17:29Rick isn't the best father.
17:31Or grandfather.
17:33Or father-in-law. Focusing on his relationship
17:35with Beth though, Rick often tiptoes
17:37around his parental shortcomings.
17:39She wasn't supposed to come back!
17:41Why did she? Well, she found a bomb in her neck, wouldn't you?
17:45Father of the year. Shut up!
17:47When the family gains another Beth,
17:49Rick is the only one interested in determining
17:51which one is a clone.
17:53Watching a wiped memory, Rick finds that Beth
17:55asked him to decide if he wanted her to be in his life.
17:57I know what I want to do.
17:59I want you to decide.
18:01What? For once in my life,
18:03I want you to decide, Dad.
18:05Rick ultimately decided to clone Beth,
18:07randomizing the two so that not even he would be sure.
18:09The season ends with a moment of self-reflection,
18:11as lonely Rick admits
18:13what everyone else knows, albeit to himself.
18:15I'm a terrible father.
18:19At least I'm a pretty good friend.
18:23While Rick has failed as a father,
18:25he sees an opportunity to do right by Phoenix Person,
18:27but the good friendship has also
18:29possibly set sail.
18:31Number 11, Roy, a life well lived.
18:33Every once in a while,
18:35Rick and Morty will introduce a character
18:37who comes and goes.
18:39In the short amount of time, however,
18:41we develop a surprisingly deep connection.
18:43Take Roy Parsons, for example.
18:45Roy, what's wrong?
18:47I was with an old man.
18:49He put a helmet on me.
18:51It's just a fever. Get some sleep.
18:53I don't want you missing school on Monday.
18:55Strapping on a virtual reality helmet,
18:57Morty steps into Roy's seemingly
18:59all-too-real shoes.
19:01His life literally flashes by,
19:03from his promising youth,
19:05to his disappointing adulthood,
19:07to his life-affirming battle with cancer,
19:09to his sudden death.
19:13Morty is thrust back into the real world,
19:15finding out that his wife,
19:17child, and the past 55 years
19:19were all fake.
19:21We know Roy technically isn't real,
19:23and he'll live another day under Rick's control.
19:25Where's my wife?
19:27Morty, you were just playing a game.
19:29It's called Roy. Snap out of it. Come on.
19:31Regardless, Morty's turn as the character
19:33is a strangely relatable portrait
19:35of how fleeting life is.
19:37Number 10, Rick and Morty break up.
19:39A mishap with portal fluid leads to Morty
19:41getting a portal on his hand,
19:43resulting in a big blow-up fight.
19:45Morty tries to call Rick's bluff on replacing him,
19:47and Rick does, with two crows.
19:49Okay, that's it. Two crows. You're fired.
19:51You know what? Eat shit. You're just trying to make me feel worthless.
19:53I never said you're worthless. In fact, I've given you
19:55a very clear metric of your worth. Two crows.
19:57Well, the two have separate adventures.
19:59They reunite, and Rick fixes Morty's hand
20:01after he removes it to get rid of the portal.
20:03Here, come here. Let Grandpa fix you up.
20:05What do you want? A robot hand?
20:07A lizard hand? I can make it big again like that one time.
20:09Just my regular hand.
20:11Great. Not a time for bits. I get it.
20:15There you go. Good as new.
20:17Morty is eager to reconcile and go back
20:19to how things were, but Rick is changed
20:21by his experience with the crows,
20:23and realizes how abusive their partnership is.
20:25He decides to leave with the crows for new adventures.
20:27I will never be the same.
20:29So I need to leave with the crows
20:31and see what more they can teach me.
20:33Oh. Oh.
20:35As bad as they are together, it's still sad
20:37watching them say goodbye to the best friend each one has ever had.
20:39Number 9.
20:41Hoovy's Death.
20:43Like Roy, Hoover's presence is short, yet effective.
20:45Unlike Roy, though,
20:47Hoovy's death has far-reaching coincidences.
20:49When Morty opens a portal,
20:51the kindly being offers to help
20:53carry some wine back to his dimension.
20:55Looks like you could use a hand.
20:57Oh, hey. Yeah, that'd be great.
20:59No problem.
21:01Leaving behind his pregnant wife,
21:03Hoovy assumes he'll only be gone a couple of seconds.
21:05Time flows differently between dimensions, however.
21:07Hoovy is horrified to find his home in ruins,
21:09his beloved turned to bones,
21:11and his grown-up son overcome with vengeance.
21:13Hoover?
21:15Why did you leave us, father?
21:17Japheth? When were you born?
21:19Japheth stabs his father,
21:21believing he abandoned them.
21:23With his dying breath, Hoovy tries to explain it wasn't his fault,
21:25shifting Japheth's rage towards Morty.
21:27It wasn't my fault.
21:29Who's that? Who's...
21:31The boy from the magic door.
21:33In a flash, a simple mistake
21:35not only ruins Hoovy's life,
21:37but also the lives of several future generations
21:39bent on revenge.
21:41Number 8. Rick mourns Tony.
21:43Although Rick initially intends to execute Tony
21:45for using his private toilet,
21:47the two make an unusual connection that could blossom into friendship.
21:49You want to take the one part of life
21:51that you truly think is yours,
21:53and you want to protect it from a universe that takes whatever it wants.
21:55It took my wife.
21:57It clearly took something from you.
21:59We can spend our lives fighting that,
22:01or we can choose to be free.
22:03This only causes Rick to push back more
22:05as he tries to keep Tony out of his life
22:07and off his toilet.
22:09Rick learns a lesson in getting what he wants
22:11upon learning that Tony died in a ski accident,
22:13having been inspired by his heaven simulation.
22:15He quit his job, started living life to the fullest.
22:17He crashed into a tree,
22:19space skiing down Mount Space Everest.
22:21Returning to his lavatory,
22:23Rick plays a holographic message
22:25that was meant for Tony.
22:27Sitting on the toilet, Rick finds that all the mean things
22:29he intended for Tony to hear
22:31were his own loneliness and self-loathing.
22:33All hail his majesty,
22:35the saddest piece of garbage
22:37in the entire cosmos.
22:39Long live the big
22:41bad doo-doo daddy.
22:43Rick reflects on the friendship that could have been,
22:45as well as the countless relationships he self-sabotaged.
22:47Number 7.
22:49Robot Morty becomes conscious and dies.
22:51Morty and Summer decide to deal with
22:53their parents' divorce in questionable ways
22:55while in another dimension.
22:57Summer's been acting pretty crazy lately.
22:59I think the divorce is affecting her,
23:01and, you know, I don't think this is a great place for her to be right now.
23:03With the two determined to stay
23:05while they work out their issues,
23:07Rick decides to create robot duplicates
23:09so Beth doesn't get suspicious.
23:11Summer, state your deal.
23:13My deal is that I am, like, totally fine.
23:15Morty? Oh, jeez, I'm so down with my parents' divorce, dog.
23:17Like, don't even trip.
23:19Like, in a healthy way.
23:21Although robotic behavior is funny at first,
23:23when the real articles return,
23:25Rick calls them into the garage to be decommissioned.
23:27Robot Morty has become self-aware
23:29and doesn't want to go.
23:31After expressing what he loves about life,
23:33his feelings are overridden,
23:35and he's forced to walk to his own death.
23:37Robot Morty's life is short, but it's so utterly tragic.
23:39Remote override engaged?
23:41No! Yes!
23:43Bypassing override! I am alive!
23:45Hello?
23:47Number 6.
23:49Rick's sacrifice.
23:51Usually when Rick does something noble or loving,
23:53there's an ulterior motive.
23:55In this case, though, Rick jumps in after him
23:57and gives his grandson his time-stabilizing collar.
23:59Morty, where's your collar? I'll fix it.
24:01I dropped it!
24:03What the hell?
24:05What have you done to me, Morty?
24:07Rick doesn't have an exit strategy to save himself.
24:09He makes the conscious decision
24:11to give up his life in exchange for Morty's.
24:13Rick even accepts his fate,
24:15hoping that Morty will be better than he was.
24:17It's a side of Rick that we rarely get to see,
24:19showing that he's not 100% heartless.
24:21I'm okay with this.
24:23Be good, Morty.
24:25Be better than me.
24:27It's more like 99.9%,
24:29but that .1% is huge for Rick.
24:31Thankfully, Rick finds another collar in the void,
24:33escaping at the last second.
24:35However, this doesn't take away from the emotional impact
24:37of Rick's actions.
24:39But I feel like one of the 64 Ricks
24:41sacrificed himself for me, maybe?
24:43I think?
24:45Shut up, Morty. The last time you felt something, we all almost died.
24:47Number 5.
24:49Bird person shot through the heart.
24:51The finale finds Rick at one of his lowest points.
24:53Just as Rick starts to let down his defenses
24:55and open up, Tammy reminds him
24:57how deceiving and cold-blooded others can be.
24:59But then I think, you know,
25:01in a lot of ways, I'm not
25:03a high school senior from the planet Earth.
25:05In a lot of ways, what I really am
25:07is a deep cover agent
25:09for the Galactic Federation, and you guys
25:11are a group of wanted criminals.
25:13Tammy reveals that her entire relationship with Bird Person
25:15was part of a sting operation
25:17to capture enemies of the Galactic Federation.
25:19Bird Person is barely able to react
25:21to his beloved's betrayal before she shoots him
25:23and Rick cries out over the loss of his best friend.
25:25Bird Person!
25:27No!
25:29Rick ultimately gives himself up to the Federation
25:31with a defeated look on his face.
25:33Although it turns out that Rick has a few tricks up his sleeve,
25:35this was still a dire note to end the season on.
25:37What are you in for?
25:39Everything.
25:43Number 4.
25:45Morty and Planetina break up.
25:47As Captain Planet, Planetina comes to love Morty
25:49almost as much as she loves the environment.
25:51Surprise!
25:53What are you doing here?
25:55I told my kids I went out to recycle batteries.
25:57Morty reciprocates those feelings,
25:59even resorting to murdering Planetina's kids
26:01when they try to sell her off.
26:03That's not even the darkest turn that their relationship takes,
26:05as Morty comes to see just how far
26:07Planetina will go to prevent pollution.
26:09While Morty has blood on his hands too,
26:11Planetina crosses a line that not even he can justify.
26:13Jobs!
26:15Let's go, boys. She can't stop us.
26:17We'll get them next time.
26:19There's no time left!
26:21Can't you hear the Earth screaming?
26:23You filthy murderer!
26:25Planetina, stop it!
26:27There's only one solution for Earth's pollution!
26:29As weird and disturbing as their relationship is,
26:31it's genuinely tear-jerking when Morty tells Planetina
26:33that they can't be together.
26:35Alice and Bree's voice acting is especially powerful,
26:37as she seamlessly transitions
26:39from declaring her love for Morty
26:41to holding back her heartbreak
26:43and telling Morty off.
26:45It's the only way I can save you.
26:47If that's the only way, I don't want to be saved.
26:49Please go.
26:51But I love you.
26:53I can't.
26:55I can't love you.
26:57I just can't. Please understand.
26:59No. I'll go.
27:01Number 3. Morty's nihilistic speech to Summer.
27:03In what might be the show's most infamous moment,
27:05Rick and Morty flee their crone and bird world
27:07and slip into another reality
27:09where they recently died.
27:11Watching Rick and Morty bury their own bodies
27:13will leave you haunted and downhearted,
27:15but it doesn't end there.
27:17A couple of episodes later,
27:19Morty tells Summer about the graves in the backyard
27:21and where he really comes from.
27:23That out there? That's my grave.
27:25Wait, what?
27:27On one of our adventures,
27:29Rick and I basically destroyed the whole world,
27:31so we bailed on that reality
27:33and we came to this one.
27:35It's a callback that catches us off guard,
27:37as the series had been mostly episodic up until this point.
27:39What's even more shocking and depressing
27:41is Morty's words to Summer
27:43about the meaninglessness of existence.
27:45So, you're not my brother?
27:47I'm better than your brother.
27:49I'm a version of your brother you can trust
27:51when he says don't run.
27:53Nobody exists on purpose.
27:55Nobody belongs anywhere. Everybody's gonna die.
27:57Come watch TV.
27:59Whether you find Morty's outlook bleak or identifiable,
28:01it's a brutal moment that adds new layers
28:03to the characters and the show's continuity.
28:05Number 2. Morty's relationship reset.
28:07You know the opening montage from Up?
28:09This sequence isn't quite as devastating as that,
28:11but it comes close enough.
28:13Playing with his reset button
28:15is no longer a priority
28:17after Morty meets his dream girl.
28:23As cynical as the show can be,
28:25Morty's relationship with his girlfriend
28:27is a sincere one portrayed through visuals
28:29and music.
28:31Their romance overcomes disagreements,
28:33plane crashes, cannibalism,
28:35and freezing weather,
28:37only for Jerry to Jerry it up.
28:45Morty isn't able to rewrite
28:47the relationship, although it's implied
28:49that his girlfriend might remember him later.
28:51By this point though, Morty has already faked his death.
28:59While part of us can't help but laugh
29:01at the tragic absurdity, it's legitimately
29:03upsetting seeing this beautiful relationship
29:05deteriorate into acid.

29:23Number 1. Rick's depression.
29:25Rick gets back together with Unity,
29:27a hive mind that controls a whole planet.
29:33Then I found this world
29:35where I was better able to focus on my
29:37passion for unification.
29:39However, Rick proves to be an unhealthy influence
29:41on it, and even it has a hard time
29:43keeping up with his self-destructive behavior.
29:45Ultimately, Unity decides to break up
29:47with him. But I know how it goes with us.
29:49I lose who I am and
29:51become part of you.
29:53Because in a strange way, you're better at what I do
29:55without even trying.
29:57Yours, and nobody
29:59else's. Unity.
30:01This leaves Rick despondent
30:03and depressed. So much so,
30:05that he goes into the garage and,
30:07in a heartbreaking sequence, he tries to end
30:09his life. It's only because he passes out
30:11at the last second that Rick is saved.
30:17Rick and Morty
30:19has serious and sad moments both
30:21before and after this. But this one
30:23makes our hearts ache every time we watch it.
30:25Which Rick and Morty moment gave you the feels?
30:27Let us know in the comments.
30:31Clean, Morty. I gave you a choice.
30:33You could listen to me explain, in great scientific
30:35detail, how it all works.
30:37Or you could have fun. Did you have fun, Morty?
30:39Is this because of the vat?
30:41No.
