Maidstone young people give their opinion on lowered voting age

16 and 17-year-olds will now be able to cast their vote in the UK's next general election, but do Kent young people agree with the change?   Kristin Hawthorne spoke to those in Maidstone.

00:00I feel like I'd be quite excited to vote if I could vote now because I think it's

00:03good for everybody to have a say in like what's happening with the country.

00:06I think it's good because like it will show that it will give you like a chance to do

00:11something before like you're 18.

00:13I'm pretty excited to vote because I feel like this generation is becoming more and

00:17more like aware of like politics and they're becoming like they're forming opinions.

00:22I think that it's really great that 16 year olds get to vote in the next election because

00:26I think young people have probably more opinion than people who are older.

00:32I think that it's really good that we're like the first generation to vote because it really

00:35shows like all the older generations like an insight on how like we can improve the world.

00:40It's quite crazy because you've got to pay like the government for all this stuff and

00:43like you've got to then like you have a say in what everyone's doing around you but you

00:46can't drink alcohol.

00:47I do think that that's going to be an issue and that people are going to be influenced

00:50especially by MPs because they think that because we're younger that they can influence

00:55us.

00:56Like make younger people more aware because like in school we don't know much about it

01:00like at all.

01:01Drinking and voting are two very different things like I mean drinking is like obviously

01:06it's bad for you like it's not great it's like it's addicting but like voting is like

01:11voicing your opinion.

01:12it's good because it's a good thing.

01:15So let's go.
