00:00All the way back when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth, the 1960s, man dreamed of a place where anyone and everyone could go to get every piece of civilization in the palm of their hand.
00:08And over six decades later, we've gone from primitive machine with a lack of features and no real identity, to a primitive machine lacking features and having no real identity.
00:15Safe to say we've come a long way, but what better way to represent the new age the internet has brought than with memes.
00:19Memes, for the good of mankind or not, have been one of the leading effects of the internet's rise.
00:22They, just like us, have evolved over many years.
00:24They come in all shapes and sizes, we may not always understand them, but at the end of the day, we can't escape them.
00:28But considering I've been talking for about 30 seconds, it's about time I brought up Sonic the Hedgehog.
00:32Considering how memes often use copyrighted characters and material, and given Sonic's not-so-stellar reputation, he's been a prime target for memes over the years.
00:39So I thought let's go through Sonic's history and look back at all the most influential, iconic, and moronic memes that have manifested over the years with the blue blur.
00:45I'm gonna try not to talk much about memes that are only in the Sonic fandom, but rather general ones that most people, including non-Sonic fans, will know about in chronological order.
00:52And before we start, I just want to say that viewer discretion is gonna be advised on this one.
00:55Considering the internet's type of humor, there's gonna be a few touchy subjects, so you've been warned.
00:59This one's gonna be a doozy, so buckle up, chuckle f***s.
01:01Let's start at the beginning.
01:03Hello, internet.
01:04It's a bit hard to find what was the first ever Sonic meme.
01:07I mean, it depends on what you consider a meme.
01:09But in my correct opinion, I believe that the first widespread Sonic meme, and maybe even the reason I'm making this video at all, was none other than our man, Sonichu.
01:15Created by the one and only Christian Weston Chandler on March 17th, 2000, when Chris was tasked with making a CD cover for a compilation of his favorite songs, his game plan was to use Sonic and Pikachu in the project.
01:25But his teacher wouldn't allow him to use copyrighted characters, so Chris had an idea.
01:29Sonic and Pikachu combined into one, to create Sonichu.
01:32He would later go on to make the fabled Sonichu comic series, as well as his classic Sonichu medallion.
01:37As well as making an entire cast of colorful characters, including Sonichu's wife, Rosechu, the chaotic combo, Chris' Sonichu form, and even Sonichu and Rosechu's kids.
01:44Throughout the years, Chris would upload his creations to his site, CWC's Sonichu site.
01:48However, in 2007, the Sonic fandom was changed forever, when 4chan users were tipped off to Christian shenanigans.
01:53It was actually something awful, I'm an idiot.
01:56And since then, Sonichu has been one of the biggest Sonic memes to date, mainly for the reason that may see him as an encapsulation of the entire Sonic fandom.
02:02And while that's kinda true, I guess, Sonichu's been immortalized as a de facto Sonic OC.
02:07He's everywhere, all you gotta do is paint Sonic yellow, change his ears and tail, give him cheeks, and boom.
02:11There's been somewhat Sonichu content out there, it's insane, so I'm gonna just leave it here.
02:13But truth be told, when people think of Sonic OC's, they think of Sonichu.
02:17She couldn't have just let him use f***ing Pikachu.
02:19Speaking of, something the Sonic fandom has been chastised and beaten for the amount of are Sonic original characters that have been created.
02:24Mostly every Sonic character is assigned with the same basic style template, so it's super easy to make your own custom character.
02:29But maybe a bit too easy.
02:30Because of that, there are an infinite amount of Sonic characters out there.
02:33Like, there are so many, I was legit gonna do a video about the world of Sonic OC's.
02:37But then I typed Sonic OC into Twitter, and I wanted to be alive when the video came out, so I bagged it.
02:40But the thing is, considering there's so many, a lot of them end up just being pretty crappy and low effort.
02:44Like, for every unique and awesome Sonic character with a dope design that reflects the person who made it, there's ten MS Paint Bucket moments.
02:50And a company nine-year-old saying that this is their Sonic OC, and nobody else can steal this masterpiece of originality.
02:55It's so bad that there are little stereotypes of Sonic OC creators at this point.
02:59Need I mention Chakra X's video?
03:00But out of all of them, probably the most infamous one that's been made is Cold Steel the Hedgehog, accompanied by the amazing and iconic line, nothing personnel, kid.
03:07Moving on from that, right into another iconic one, being Pingus.
03:10As we all know, this thing originated from an episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, but specifically the episode Boogie Mania, in which Eggman tells Scratch and Grounder,
03:17Snooping as usual, I see!
03:20The meme, however, originated in 2007, where the YouTuber Steg Blob uploaded a YouTube poop titled Robotnik Has a Viagra Overdose.
03:28Now you may lick my balls on my pingus!
03:31However, the meme didn't truly take off until the next year, where McMangos would upload the classic This Video Contains Win,
03:36where the clip is composed of a gourmet race from Kirby Superstar.
03:41And ever since, it's been a staple for classic YouTube poops.
03:48This meme has become an icon, having compilations, edits, fanart, etc.
03:52I mean, hell, it even made it into an episode of Sonic Boom.
03:55Ah, Sonic the Hedgehog! Snooping as usual, I see!
04:00Now we're at what might just be the most used Sonic meme of all time, Gotta Go Fast.
04:03This phrase hasn't just become some late epic meme-ay, it's essentially become Sonic's official catchphrase.
04:08Of course, originating from the Sonic X intro, Gotta Go Fast was basically just some cool one-liner that only real Sonic fans knew.
04:13But in around 2008, the meme was born with one image.
04:15It was an intentionally poorly drawn Sonic running on a road with the titular phase written above his head.
04:20It was posted to the YouChoose forums, in which nobody really knew who made it.
04:23Though it was supposedly originated from a now-defunct Sonic fan site called Sonic Central.
04:27It was shared around a bit on other sites, but at that point, the parodies had already started coming in.
04:30People love tracing over this thing and making it all different characters for some reason.
04:34But yeah, this thing blew up.
04:35It just kept growing and growing to every corner of the internet.
04:37Tumblr, Twitter, Reddit, this guy's car.
04:40And by 2014, it was officially starting to be recognized by Sega.
04:42And by now, you can't escape the phrase.
04:44It is in literally everything now.
04:45Sonic Boom, the movie, hell, that was a figure of the poorly drawn Sonic in a Steven Universe episode, for God's sake.
04:50And speaking of Gotta Go Fast, another iconic line that was born around 2008 was You're Too Slow.
04:54Originating from Brawl, one of Sonic's taunts became infamous for just existing.
04:58You're too slow!
05:00It was just kind of cringe, so the internet ran wild and turned it into a meme.
05:03However, unlike Gotta Go Fast, this one hasn't really been as remembered.
05:05I mean, yeah, people still talk about it, but I see way more people talking about Gotta Go Fast than this one.
05:09Because it just got overshadowed.
05:10Now here's one that has absolutely no right being as in-depth as it is.
05:13It's Chilly Dog Time.
05:15I'm sure you've all seen this absolutely iconic video.
05:17It's Chilly Dog Time, yeah!
05:20But how many of you actually know the origin of it?
05:22In 2009, a fan film based on Super Smash Bros. Brawl was produced.
05:26Titled, There Will Be Brawl, a parody on the name There Will Be Blood.
05:29It's a wild ride where the Mushroom Kingdom is full of drugs, gangs, and...
05:33It's such an oddity now, and from what I've heard, it actually wasn't even half bad.
05:38But the reason we're all here is him.
05:40Yeah, there he is.
05:41Played by Thomas Menino, Sonic was a homeless guy living alongside Snake who lives in his cardboard box, which is genius.
05:46And he's basically just a simple background character, didn't really have much screen time.
05:49In fact, the iconic video isn't even in the show.
05:51It was actually a behind-the-scenes video.
05:53But out of everything here, the most interesting part are the people who made the series.
05:56Being the duo of Zach Grafton as well as Matthew Mercer.
06:01F***ing Espio.
06:02Yep, essentially the creator of the Yeah, Chili Dog meme is the modern voice of Espio the Chameleon.
06:07Because of course he is.
06:08This series is way too much to get into here, but if you want to know more, there's a nearly one hour long video by this guy named Mewtwo Million,
06:14which I highly recommend if you want to learn more about the series.
06:17So yeah, go give him some sugar or you're fired.
06:19Okay, so a little update.
06:20I looked on the IMDB page for this series, and I looked at some of the voice actors, and...
06:24This guy?
06:25Who is-who is this guy?
06:28Is also this guy?
06:29Okay, so I'ma be real with you.
06:31The subject matter on this one's kinda touchy, and by that I mean 4chan humor and 2009 touchy, so you've been warned.
06:36The sonic meme of him with the derpy face and holding the ring, you all know the one.
06:40Well, it turns out the origins of that one aren't too peachy keen.
06:42The original version of this meme is from a 1942 animated Looney Tern short titled Any Bonds Today,
06:47in which Bugs, Porky, and Elmer Fudd try to convince the audience to buy war bonds.
06:51However, where it gets iffy is when Bugs, um...
06:54Oh no...
06:56Yeah, so um, uh, it turns out that this meme had some pretty bad origins.
07:00But anyway, if we forget that thing it ended up ringing up again, the meme itself originated in 2009,
07:04where 4chan did its thing and started editing it into various things, like Pikachu, Link, Bald, and finally Sonic.
07:09In fact, now knowing this, I'm never gonna unsee Sonic's quills with just Bugs' ears.
07:12I don't know, it's hard to like this thing anymore when the origin of it's so un-pog.
07:15But moving on, we're at what's easily the most iconic Sonic meme of all time,
07:18the first thing people think of when they think of Sonic memes.
07:20The legend himself?
07:22Sanic.
07:22Created in 2010 by the YouTube user OnixHeart,
07:24the video How to Draw Sanic Hedgehog depicts someone drawing the iconic image in MS Paint
07:29while being accompanied by a distorted version of Green Hill Zone.
07:31The original upload has since been deleted, but thankfully we have plentiful archives.
07:34But ever since this drawing's inception, it just hasn't stopped evolving.
07:37You've got Sanic Ball, an actually fun game with different Sanic characters,
07:40such as Sanic, Tails, Shadoo, Aim Rose, etc.
07:45Sanic has a mod in Sonic Mania, as well as other games.
07:47And as I'm sure you all know, an official free DLC t-shirt for your avatar and Sonic Forces.
07:52Yeah, Sega's basically adopted this guy and took him in as their own.
07:54They mention him all the time, he was in the movie,
07:56and even now has an official render made by Sega.
07:59Including the limited edition Sanic Chili Dog G Fuel flavor, because...
08:02Because yeah.
08:03Oh yeah, and speaking of, they had a limited one-week Sanic collection of merch for the
08:07Sega shop on April Fool's Day 2018.
08:09I'm so bummed I missed out on this, it's so dumb I want it.
08:12Hell, even Roger got some.
08:13Let's move right on to another iconic one, being Sonic.exe, created in 2011 by
08:17The original story that was posted to the Creepypasta Wiki featured a boy getting his
08:24friend's copy of Sonic 1, but it's haunted by an evil Sonic or whatever.
08:27The story for some reason started to pick up steam rapidly, and not long after, people
08:31were obsessing over the Sonic with red bloody eyes.
08:33But after the Game Jolt developer, Myst Crimson created a fan game based off the story that
08:37was no turning back.
08:38He made another game, Sally.exe.
08:40People made a bunch of art, customs, angry Sonic's career, and of course all the bootleg
08:44Sonic.exe plushes.
08:45However, before most of this happened, the mods and admins of the Creepypasta Wiki didn't
08:48like all this attention to a story they thought was absolute trash, because it was, so they
08:53deleted it.
08:53But it didn't stop the fandom from rallying for its return.
08:55But you may be asking though, how does this become a meme?
08:57Well in the past few years, Sonic.exe has basically become a poster boy for shitty YouTube
09:01content.
09:01Specifically videos like...
09:03Do not call Sonic.exe at 3am, OMG he actually came to my house.
09:06In which people with negative 6 brain cells call Sonic.exe at 3 in the morning because...
09:10The world of 3am videos has basically become a huge meme online thanks to characters like
09:14Sonic.exe.
09:15Point is, Sonic.exe himself hasn't really become a meme.
09:17He more so just represents all kinds of crap you lower for content online at this point.
09:21After that, we got onto one of the biggest chads in the Sonic fandom, Sammy Harpers.
09:24Or more accurately, Sammy Classic Sonic Fan.
09:26On the fateful day of July 15th, 2013, Sammy uploaded the now infamous video, Stop Hating
09:31on Sonic.
09:32In which Sammy sits behind some broken Jazzverse figures and uh, yeah.
09:35Seriously, what the frick guys?
09:38I mean seriously, I hate all you frickin' Sonic haters!
09:42Sonic is not a bad franchise anymore!
09:45Then a few months later in October, he made the second and even more infamous video, Rant
09:49Against the Sonic Fanbase, You All Ruined Sonic.
09:51In which he screams at the camera ranting about the Sonic fanbase.
09:54I'm happy with all you frickin' trolls!
09:57And all you frickin' haters!
09:58And all you frickin' Sonic fanfricks!
10:01It didn't take long until 4chan discovered Sammy's shenanigans, but what really put him
10:05on the map was when big YouTubers started taking notice of him.
10:07By 2015, channels like GamerForMars and Chadtronic had made videos discussing Sammy, the latter
10:12one however being the frontrunner for Sammy content, reviewing other videos like Sammy Classic
10:15Sonic Fan's Adventure.
10:17But by this point, Sammy had stopped making videos and was trying to move on for the most
10:19part.
10:20But later in 2015, Sammy created a new channel with more laid back discussions, however it
10:23didn't really go anywhere.
10:24So after a 2 year hiatus, finally in 2018, Sammy made an unexpected comeback with his
10:29new channel, the Sammy Classic Sonic Fan.
10:31And since then, he has completely embraced the memes.
10:33He's done discussion videos, skits, hell he even did an interview with Chadtronic under
10:36the Sammy Classic Sonic Fan name.
10:38And not only that, he's even recently made Sammy Classic Sonic Fan's Adventure 3, after
10:41the first two Oscar winning films, and it was the perfect way to cap off the trilogy with
10:45several amazing moments and callbacks to the first two.
10:47I'm reading this before it came out, I have literally no idea.
10:51Okay, remember that warning I gave earlier?
10:52Yeah, yeah, yeah, this part's fucked.
10:54So on April 8th, 2013, two people, known as Lindstar and Lanny, created over a 20 page
11:03long comic titled, yeah, just go ahead and blur that.
11:06I honestly just don't even want to talk about this thing because it's just flat out disgusting.
11:10I'm sure as hell never going to read it.
11:12But basically, if you don't know what this comic is, I'll just give you this clip as a
11:15hint.
11:17I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map.
11:21So yeah, basically this thing was released in an Encyclopedia Dramatica page which created
11:25because, sure, and it of course, once again, was picked up by 4chan.
11:28In which, like, the one page I can show without going to jail shows this derpy image of Tails
11:31sitting on a bench, which was just used as a way to troll others into remembering that
11:35this comic exists.
11:35But it of course evolved into several people making edits of it, and there were so many
11:39that eventually started to delete 4chan.
11:40And even though you can't not think of this source material, oh, man, these are pretty funny.
11:43Now if we start at the beginning one last time and get to the year 2014, there was a pretty
11:46magical event once again from Mr. Chandler.
11:48On the 22nd of June that year, Chris learned of the announcement of Sonic Boom, including
11:52Sonic's new design, which he did not take too kindly to Sonic's blue arms.
11:56This started an over year-long temper tantrum in which Chris would boycott the game, destroy
12:00Tomy plushes, even though he still gave them his money in an attempt to glitter bomb Sega
12:03HQ.
12:04Though all he really did was put glitter in an envelope so it wasn't only a bomb, created
12:07Facebook groups saying things like,
12:09I am still very pissed off that no one has fixed the monstrosity that is changing Sonic's
12:13arm color.
12:14I am boycotting the Sonic Boom games and TV show and the toys, minus the two I bought to
12:18illustrate my point, and everything else of it.
12:20But without a doubt, the most infamous hissy fit came on December 26th, when Chris entered
12:24a GameStop he'd previously been banned from, and after both vandalizing a Sonic Boom display
12:28and being told to leave, the police were threatened to be called.
12:30And then, one of my favorite videos takes place.
12:44He was arrested for macing a GameStop employee, and he was released 3 days later and given
12:48a 6 month suspended sentence with a $541 fine.
12:51Safe to say, the internet ran wild with this whole fiasco, making jokes left and right and
12:55poking fun at Sonic's arms, officially dubbing the event Blarms, and as I'm sure you all know,
12:59Sonic Boom references the whole ordeal.
13:01First in Season 2, Episode 57, where Mark the Taper, who hasn't been 100% confirmed,
13:05is totally a reference to Chris, considering the arms line.
13:07And then 9 episodes later, with the one that's just flat out a Chris reference.
13:10Look what I found at the flea market!
13:13Dude, is that Tomatopotamus too?
13:16That's the best one in the entire series!
13:18Tomatopotamus never worked in 3D.
13:20Game companies always ruin their beloved franchises.
13:23And they never should have changed the color of Tomatopotamus' legs.
13:27Sonic's arms are not freaking blue!
13:29Chris-Chan is innocent!
13:34Okay, fine, I'm done talking about Chris-Chan, moving on.
13:44Moving on, in 2015, the Sonic franchise would change forever with one man, Aaron Weber,
13:48who was hired as the new runner of the Sonic Twitter account after Kelly Parker left the
13:51company.
13:52And since then, the Sonic Twitter has been the absolute legend it is today.
13:54The account started to be way more humorous and self-aware, poking fun at people in that
13:57Sonic's rocky past.
13:58But most importantly, after enough time, they started going hog with memes.
14:01They basically just take whatever memes are popular at the time and Sonicify them.
14:04And while it may have been a tad overkill at times, these are still great.
14:07Now if we move forward a few years from that, we get to what's probably the most loved and
14:10hated Sonic meme ever.
14:12My man, Ugandan Knuckles.
14:13On February 20th, the animator Greg Zilla uploaded his review on Sonic Lost World, which towards
14:18the beginning, he was born.
14:19So, without further echidna, oh no.
14:21Intended to just be a two-second visual gag, that's all it was for a bit.
14:24That was until a few weeks later when Greg uploaded the now classic Knuckles Sings, which
14:28did spawn a decent number of memes, but not nearly as many as it would get later.
14:31Since on December 16th, 2017, the DeviantArt user Tidius Flyer created him.
14:36A 3D model of Greg Zilla's artwork was brought into the world, solidifying the meme's relevancy.
14:39However, what really put this little red boy on the map was a video uploaded by Stalsby titled
14:43You Do Not Know DeWay, in which him and his friends imported the model into the game VR
14:47chat and started trolling people asking the iconic line.
14:59Which is believed to be originated from the line in the film, Who Killed Captain Alex?
15:03Where some dude says,
15:04But yeah, after that, the meme was set in stone.
15:10There were more avatars, songs, which are genuine bops.
15:13This game I found called Ugandan Knuckles Simulator.
15:15Okay, so we're playing Ugandan Knuckles Simulator here.
15:19Let's start the game.
15:21Let's go to level 1.
15:23Alright, oh, this is grand.
15:25Um, let's, let's, uh...
15:28Let's pee up this guy.
15:29Yo, okay.
15:30And it, of course, got a figure, kickstarting the widely known collectible line, U2s.
15:35Being their first ever figure, in fact.
15:37Since then, they've used them on a total of 11 products with no signs of stopping.
15:40Even though it might mean we get Sonic 1's pretty pleased.
15:42But anyway, you couldn't escape this guy for a few weeks.
15:44But after a while, as all memes do, it started to die out.
15:46He was dead, he was unfunny, and everyone forgot he existed.
15:49He died along with his brother in Who Touch On My Spaghet, and our bestest friend, Logan Paul.
15:53But weirdly, about two years later, he started to come back.
15:56I sort of noticed this pattern where a meme that's considered unfunny and shit comes back about a year or two later,
16:00and stays permanently so it can be used ironically.
16:02Which is exactly what happened with this boy.
16:04Nowadays, he's here to stay, for better or for worse.
16:06When Sonic Movie Trailers announced, people were of course skeptical of the reported new design Sonic had,
16:10and for fair reason.
16:11It wasn't pretty on December 10th, 2018, when IGN gave us the infamous Sonic Movie teaser poster.
16:16Which, do I even need to say it?
16:18And the second poster that was found really didn't help the situation.
16:20Plus, people found that in order to pull off the exact post Sonic hat in this poster,
16:23you'd need to dislocate your leg, and who would do such a thing?
16:25And after several leaks of Sonic's design, the memeing truly started on April 30th, when all went to sh**.
16:29Um, yeah, it was being talked about for days.
16:31People were showing what other Sonic characters looked like in the new movie style,
16:34and Sonic's realistic teeth in this one shot were being posted everywhere.
16:37People made hundreds of edits to this shot specifically, making me into basically anything you want.
16:41This design really put us on the worst timeline, but thankfully we got back on the right one.
16:44Now, before we get on to the final topic, I wanted to bring up a few memes I couldn't really put on the list.
16:48Ones I couldn't really talk about for too long, since there's not really that many interesting backstories behind them.
16:51So let's just do a kind of rapid-fire honorable mention, starting with the many versions of Sonic Says.
16:56Including the 90s one, the Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing one, and the Runners one too.
16:59The please don't turn me into a mercantile plushie meme was Sonicified several times.
17:03Sonic Dreams Collection appeared a game that literally every YouTuber under the sun played in 2015.
17:07The webcomic Tales gets trolled, a bizarre story with all kinds of licensed characters, including Tom who made this iconic face.
17:12The good old bootleg Harry Potter Obama 10 backpack that everybody loves.
17:15The problem with going faster than light is that you can only live in darkness, and no matter how fast I run, I cannot run away from the pain.
17:20Both memes of kids wearing Sonic Halloween costumes, with the former being from a short YouTube film titled,
17:24A Short Sonic the Hedgehog film that explores loneliness, dread, and the horrors of youth, and the latter being from an old catalog.
17:30There's so many pieces of Christian Sonic art which exist, Hedgehog getting an X-ray,
17:33the double boost from Sonic Forces to meme pretty hard in 2017,
17:36Eggman's plan on his communicator thing being memed a ton when SMA came out.
17:39I mean, just to smear frames from network comedy gold anyway.
17:41Some memes from the full Sonic movie, like Eggman pressing the button, I have no idea.
17:44And I was not expecting that to name a few.
17:46Eggman is going to piss on the moon.
17:51How do you like that, Obama?
17:53I pissed on the moon, you idiot!
17:58And Knuckles.
17:59And now we're finally at the last part of this clusterf**k, the final, most recent entry on this list.
18:03Getter.
18:03Now let me just come up and say this up front, I have literally no idea on anything political at all,
18:07so keep that in mind if I get some info wrong.
18:09But essentially, in 2021, senior Donald Trump advisor Jason Miller launched his own social media platform
18:14in order to have an alternative to the toxicity of sites like Twitter.
18:17Okay, he's kinda got a point.
18:18But the reason I'm telling you all this is because on the first day of the app's existence,
18:21it was being flooded with Rule 34 of Sonic.
18:24For...
18:24No reason.
18:25Literally everywhere you went on the site's opening days,
18:27you'd be bombarded with images of Sonic and friends in rather compromising positions.
18:31Like, this s**t was everywhere.
18:32Though the most unfortunate circumstance imaginable,
18:35Getter ended up removing most of the material after the initial raid.
18:37Though thankfully, we still have a couple screenshots.
18:39This, though, this was like an actual event.
18:41Like, literally the mainstream media picked up on this.
18:44You had all kinds of articles talking about this, including f**king Newsweek.
18:47This whole thing was just so stupid.
18:49Like, out of all the characters they could have chosen, they chose Sonic.
18:52I like to imagine they created this site playing golf or something,
18:55and he checks his newly launched worldwide social media platform while you see Shadows.
18:59So that's a look at the most influential moronic Sonic memes from every corner of the internet.
19:03There were a few highs, many lows, and I don't know if you'll change in the slightest after this.
19:05Just sad.
19:06This is a long one, the page is like double what it usually is,
19:08but you know what, it's about damn time someone talked about Smooth Rider the Hedgehog.
19:11But anyway, my main goal of 2022 is to reach 10k, and on the track we're on,
19:14it looks like we just might get there.
19:15So yeah, I feel like this garbage for some reason, hit the corresponding button and subscribe so I'll stop bitching.
19:19And sorry for the lack of uploads lately, I'm gonna try to get back on a more frequent schedule.
19:22But yeah, as for now, I'm gonna go edit this crap.
