A freelance preacher, who's being investigated in connection with a criminal case, was fined RM2,800 by the Syariah Lower Court in Shah Alam on Wednesday (July 15) on a charge of preaching Islam without a license last year.

39-year-old Faridul Firdaus Zaulkapli, better known as Ustaz Farid Abu Auliya, was sentenced after pleading guilty to the charge read before Syariah Judge Siti Rahmah Hussin.

00:26Siti Rahmah Husin. The offense was allegedly committed at a surau in Section 19, Shah Alam
00:31on September 2, 2024. The court ordered the father of 10 to be imprisoned for 10 days if he fails to
00:38pay the fine. During proceedings, Sharia public prosecutor Siti Noor Hashiba Jamhari suggested
00:44the accused be sentenced to maximum imprisonment of two years, including a fine. However, Faridul
00:50appealed for a light sentence due to loss of income. He also appealed not to be jailed as he
00:56needs to support his parents, two wives and children, with the youngest being nine months old,
01:01while the eldest is 14 years old. He also claimed that his license expired in June 2024 and had made
01:07an appeal to the religious office. After hearing applications from both parties, Sharia judge Siti
01:13Rahmah advised the accused to comply with laws enacted to prevent any deviation. Previously, police
01:19investigated a freelance preacher who allegedly spread videos involving his wife and several other
01:24women. Shah Alam District Police Chief, ACP Mohammed Iqbal Ibrahim, said this followed a report from a
01:30complainant on June 16th.
