Patriot missile system in Ukraine gets a major push as President Donald Trump announces fresh deployment to counter Russian missile and drone attacks. Developed by Raytheon, Patriots can intercept ballistic and cruise missiles. The EU will fund the supply as Ukraine pleads for more air defense support.

00:00U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the U.S. will send an undisclosed number
00:20of patriots to Ukraine, with the European Union covering the costs.
00:25Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to call for more air defense systems,
00:31including Patriot missiles, to help protect Ukraine from the ongoing barrage of Russian
00:36missile and drone strikes.
00:41So what exactly is the Patriot system?
00:46The Patriot, developed by Raytheon Technologies, is a mobile surface-to-air missile defense
00:52system that's been in service since the 1980s.
00:55It's one of the most advanced systems in the U.S. arsenal, and is capable of intercepting
01:00aircraft, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles.
01:05How does it work?
01:07The Patriot uses a range of interceptors, like the Pac-2, which uses a blast fragmentation
01:13warhead, and the more accurate Pac-3.
01:17designed for direct impact.
01:22Ukraine's likely receiving some of the more advanced Pac-3 CRI interceptors, with a radar
01:27range of over 150 kilometers.
01:32The system can spot threats from far away.
01:35Even though it wasn't originally built to intercept hypersonic missiles, the U.S. confirmed that
01:40Ukraine successfully used it to shoot down a Russian Kinzhal missile in 2023.
01:46Who else is using the Patriot system?
01:49Over 240 Patriot fire units have been delivered to 19 countries, including the U.S., Germany,
01:55Poland, Japan, and Qatar.
01:58Earlier this year, the U.S. also transferred 90 interceptors from Israel to Ukraine.
02:03What's the cost of Patriot missile?
02:06A new Patriot battery costs over $1 billion.
02:09The system itself is around $400 million, with missiles priced at about $4 million each.
02:15Why does Ukraine want more Patriots?
02:19Ukraine has been requesting more advanced air defense to protect its cities and critical
02:23infrastructure from Russia's escalating missile and drone attacks.
02:27While the system is highly effective, its cost makes it a less ideal solution against smaller,
02:34low-budget drones.
02:35Still, Ukrainian officials say these systems are crucial to stopping Russia's long-range
02:40strikes.
02:41On the other hand, Russia sees the Patriots as a direct escalation.
02:45Moscow's foreign ministry has warned that supplying Ukraine with more of these systems
02:49will only delay peace.
