00:00:00...pointing Indian batting performance.
00:00:12So after the ODI series, the two teams headed to Lodz for the first of those test matches.
00:00:16England handed debuts to middle-order batsman Alan Lamp and fastballer Derek Pringle,
00:00:21while Derek Randall and Phil Edmonds made return to the national side after two long years.
00:00:25For India, Ghulam Parkar made his debut and was the opening partner of Sunil Gavaskar.
00:00:30England captain Bob Willis won the toss and chose to bat.
00:00:34Oh, that's a beauty too. And he's given him out.
00:00:39Fingers gone up and cooked lots a little in disarray there.
00:00:42Looked at the keeper, he looked back at the umpire.
00:00:45But after those two laid-out swingers, he bowled in the other one.
00:00:51Well bowled. And he's given him out.
00:00:53But came back, it came back rather a lot.
00:00:56But came back very, very quickly indeed.
00:01:02And there's the third one to go. Kapil Dev has struck at the start of the first spell after drinks.
00:01:10A good delivery, the one going down the hill.
00:01:12And Chris Tavare is gone.
00:01:14And that was a good diving catch there by Vishwanath.
00:01:17What a tremendous performance. He's now reached 150 test match wickets.
00:01:22That's in 39 games.
00:01:24Kapil Dev straight into the business there, getting rid of the top three English batsmen.
00:01:28And in the process, reaching 150 test wickets.
00:01:30It was now up to the English middle order to stabilise the innings.
00:01:34And we pick up action with David Gower and Ian Botham at the crease.
00:01:37For a moment, it left the bat. It was going to be four runs.
00:01:48He's gone for the big one.
00:01:49Middled it quite beautifully again.
00:01:51And a tremendous shot.
00:01:57Anything in his half. He's decided to have a whack at it.
00:02:00And that's the first six of this test match.
00:02:08Good catch. Good ball too.
00:02:10Four wickets to Kapil Dev.
00:02:12Splendid straight back from Derek Randall.
00:02:23Beautifully positioned and kept the ball down very well.
00:02:29It's a beautiful shot to go through to 50.
00:02:33Just fractionally short and both and Monadeau so quickly.
00:02:37But another to Belsen.
00:02:38And has he taken it?
00:02:41Low down. He's asking for the catch.
00:02:44Botham's not going to move.
00:02:45But up goes the umpire's finger.
00:02:47He's got to go.
00:02:47Gets a little nod from Botham.
00:02:49Maddenau takes his wicket.
00:02:51And a very vital one too.
00:02:55That's another lovely shot.
00:02:58Just lent into that.
00:02:59Flicked it away so comfortably through the lakeside for four.
00:03:02And he's given it.
00:03:10Gavaskar, the skipper, has claimed the sixth wicket.
00:03:14166 on the board.
00:03:16And Derek Pringle is out.
00:03:20He's found the gap all right this time.
00:03:22Short and Gossier are putting it away for yet another boundary.
00:03:26He'll quickly move to score on here after T to 44 now.
00:03:29That's a fine shot.
00:03:34That's not a lot short.
00:03:35He'll have him do it very quickly indeed.
00:03:41Swanee plays too well.
00:03:43Score runs.
00:03:44That's 54 Derek Pringle.
00:03:46Just waiting for that one that's not slightly shorter.
00:03:49Swaying onto the back foot.
00:03:51Putting it away for four more.
00:03:52Good 50 from Derek Pringle.
00:03:54Beautiful time.
00:04:03Straight down the ground.
00:04:04Six runs.
00:04:10That's a beautiful shot.
00:04:12Hasn't played a better shot than that old Phil Eaghan's.
00:04:14It was a good comeback from England, wasn't it?
00:04:37From 37 for three, they ended day one on 278 for six.
00:04:42Ian Botham started the repair work with a solid 67 and two comeback men.
00:04:47In Derek Randall with an unbeaten 84 and Phil Edmonds with an unbeaten 59 made sure England
00:04:52were on their way to a significant first inning score.
00:04:55For India, it wasn't a surprise that Kapil did most of the damage.
00:04:59So day one.
00:05:16Nine's wide world of sports from historic and hallowed lords.
00:05:20The first test between England and India.
00:05:22The first test between England and India.
00:05:52Hello, welcome to Nine's wide world of sports and to the highlights of the second day's play
00:06:07in the test match at Lourdes, the Cornhill test between England and India.
00:06:12The first day was quite a remarkable one.
00:06:13Some very exciting cricket with England after being in a disastrous position early on,
00:06:17finishing up at 278 for six with Derek Randall playing a great innings there.
00:06:24A comeback to test cricket, 84 not out.
00:06:26And Phil Edmonds in the tail coming up with 59 not out.
00:06:30It was the middle order that saved England after they were 37 for three at one stage.
00:06:35Well, conditions on this second day just about perfect,
00:06:37although there was some talk perhaps there might be a shower later in the day.
00:06:42But there'd been a little bit of overnight rain.
00:06:44Wasn't expected to inconvenience the bowlers at all with the ball being wet.
00:06:49And certainly it hadn't got through to the pitch.
00:06:51Here's the first ball of the morning now.
00:06:53Kapil Devers, the bowler.
00:06:54And Derek Randall on 84 is taking strike.
00:06:57With me in the commentary box is Brian Close.
00:06:59And a nice start.
00:07:08And a fast side of the ground.
00:07:15Picks up three runners.
00:07:17Good on Parker at the fielder.
00:07:18Good shot, good running, and a nice pick-up and throw way down here at Deep Fine Lake.
00:07:44Mountain low.
00:07:48That's a fine stroke.
00:07:53Splitting the field on the offside.
00:07:55Yashpal Sharma and Ashok Malhotra.
00:07:58No chance there.
00:07:59Yashpal Sharma in the end chasing to the boundary.
00:08:12A nice little outswing of bold.
00:08:14Well up.
00:08:15And Derek playing like a man in form and timing it beautifully.
00:08:22Beating three people out on the offside.
00:08:24That's down the lakeside.
00:08:30It's caught by Kiamani.
00:08:33Edmonds didn't even bother to look around.
00:08:37Kiamani had no doubt that the inside edge had carried the ball to him.
00:08:43And it's 291 for seven.
00:08:46And a great partnership broken here at Lord's.
00:08:50First breakthrough for India this morning and a vital one with this second new ball, which now is 13 overs old.
00:09:01Solid stroke from Bob Taylor.
00:09:10Randall's looking for three, but there's no chance of that.
00:09:17Typical limited over ploy of looking as though he's going to charge for the third.
00:09:21Well, Kepel Dev being the senior bowler, must have the choice of ends.
00:09:31And I was quite surprised when he chose the nursery end yesterday to do about all his bowling.
00:09:36Because in the past, senior bowers, number one fast bowlers, they nearly always choose the pavilion end.
00:09:51Could you enter stride for a single?
00:09:57Well, we'll have to be quick here.
00:10:14I think Bob Taylor was gone and forgotten.
00:10:17Had that hit the stumps?
00:10:18Well, I think Derek Randall was quite prepared to take it, but I think it took Bob Taylor a little by surprise with the call there.
00:10:30Because Bob half, half hesitated.
00:10:35And then seeing that Derek Randall was committed, was going and had the throw, hit the wickets, then I think Bob Taylor would have been continuing his run into the pavilion.
00:10:48And up comes the 300 for England.
00:11:05Philip Doshi the fielder, way down at third man.
00:11:10The end of Kepel Dev's over, 301 for 7, 4 to Taylor now, and 96 to Derek Randall.
00:11:18Randall facing Budwell.
00:11:26He's gone for it this time.
00:11:27Glory is shot through the covers by Derek Randall.
00:11:30The crowd immediately rising to their feet.
00:11:33Cheer Derek Randall on making 100 here in this Lord's Test match.
00:11:37Exactly 100 out of 307 for seven.
00:11:42And the superb innings by this Nottingham Chebetsman.
00:11:48His two previous hundreds at this level have both come against Australia.
00:11:54One six and eight fours in this Nottingham today.
00:11:58And he's played supremely well.
00:12:00Well, wild yahoo at that one.
00:12:19It's the last ball of Muddenlal's over.
00:12:22He'd made up his mind.
00:12:23Bright at the bowl of bowling.
00:12:25Muddenlal's taking a pretty poor view of that.
00:12:27The field's coming in just a shade.
00:12:33Obviously intent on trying to keep Randall down that end.
00:12:36They don't want him to get too much of the bowling.
00:12:39And that's Randall's answer.
00:12:43He's picked that four for it.
00:12:44Not the greatest of shots this time from Derek.
00:12:47But they all count.
00:12:49And he's got his feet in a fairly awkward position there to play it.
00:12:56And the stroke repeated.
00:13:00Lovely piece of timing again by Randall.
00:13:02Everything absolutely right about it.
00:13:04Well, the umpires have been working overtime out there in this match so far.
00:13:19That's the first official warning for running on the pitch given to Dilip Doshi.
00:13:23122 not out to Randall at the luncheon adjournment.
00:13:27Bob Taylor, 26 with Philip Edmonds, the man out for 64.
00:13:31And just two runs added from that point to take the total up to 354 for 7.
00:13:39Been warned is coming into bowl to Derek Randall.
00:13:42And in the commentary box, it's Brian Close and Jim Laker.
00:13:45So, Doshi to Randall.
00:13:48Not for the first time dropping that very wide outside lake stump.
00:13:55Has something gone slightly astray with the rhythm of Dilip Doshi in this test match?
00:14:05There's a pleasant sight.
00:14:07Nice start for Bob Taylor.
00:14:14A loosener there from Kapil Dev.
00:14:16Started bowling from this end.
00:14:20Nice, uh, almost slow medium long hop from him.
00:14:29And he's gone.
00:14:30Nice little change of pace there.
00:14:32And fly it by Doshi.
00:14:33The first time caught Taylor in two minds.
00:14:36Looking to push out.
00:14:36Realise he was beaten in the flight.
00:14:38Look then for that little chop shot.
00:14:40And finish up giving a very simple catch to Vishwanathic Slip.
00:14:44So, Taylor goes for 31.
00:14:46And England now 363 for 8.
00:14:51For Randall.
00:14:52The gully's coming away.
00:14:54Parker coming round.
00:14:55Extra cover directions.
00:14:57And Saka going back to, uh, backward point.
00:15:05Has he taken it?
00:15:07Yes, Derek Randall didn't wait.
00:15:09Kapil Dev takes the wicket.
00:15:11Brilliantly caught there by Parker.
00:15:13It's a second hesitation from Derek Randall to see whether he'd snapped it up or not.
00:15:18And as soon as he was assured that the fielder had caught it, he was on his way for 1.26.
00:15:22For Parker, bold Kapil Dev.
00:15:25That's, uh, a fifth wicket in the innings for Kapil Dev.
00:15:29And the end of a really very fine innings from Derek Randall.
00:15:32Welcome back to Test Match Cricket.
00:15:35And already the crowd rising to their feet.
00:15:39A very popular character indeed.
00:15:41Not only in his, uh, home county of Nottingham, but, uh, everywhere around the world.
00:15:46Great enjoyment to so many people with his fielder.
00:15:48And I know he's proved, here at Lourdes, that he can do it with a bat as well.
00:15:52And he's gone for the big one.
00:16:06Tossed it up nicely.
00:16:07It's cleared everybody down there very safely.
00:16:09Very comfortably.
00:16:10And it's over the ropes for six.
00:16:11That's a pretty big hit, that from Paul Allett.
00:16:15Up to the long boundary here at Lourdes.
00:16:25Well, Paul Allett's a big, strong man.
00:16:27And he, a little slow one thrown in.
00:16:30And a couple of strides down.
00:16:31And he caught it as he was coming up and pulling it over wide of deep mid on.
00:16:36Clear of the boundary.
00:16:41Clear of the boundary.
00:16:45That's a nice friendly full toss, this time from Koppel there.
00:16:51Not the boot to it, but, uh, it still escaped him.
00:16:54So, Bob Willis gets a four.
00:17:06Clear of the boundary.
00:17:07Clear of the boundary.
00:17:08Clear of the boundary.
00:17:08Clear of the boundary.
00:17:08Clear of the boundary.
00:17:09Clear of the boundary.
00:17:10Clear of the boundary.
00:17:12400 up for England.
00:17:14For that single, Bob Willis.
00:17:17And much appreciated by the crowd.
00:17:19A good last wicket stand this.
00:17:21And a good recovery by the England team.
00:17:25And that's a new mark for the 10th wicket record against India.
00:17:39Paul Allard, Paul Allard, and Bob Willis, now 58, beating the previous record, J.T. Murray and Robin Hobbs, established in 1967.
00:17:50It could be Martin Lall now from the nursery end.
00:17:52It could be Martin Lall now from the nursery end.
00:17:54And we're 33 for 9th wicket, but the 3-5-9.
00:17:55For 33-9.
00:17:57And there it is.
00:18:00End of the England innings.
00:18:05Four hundred and thirty-three all out, with Matlal bowling Bob Willis for twenty-eighth.
00:18:16That's great performance from the England batsmen.
00:18:18Four hundred and thirty-three after being thirty-seven for three on the first morning of this Lord's Test match.
00:18:24One hundred and twenty-six for Randall, great comeback to Test cricket.
00:18:28Sixty-four for Edmonds, thirty-one to Bob Taylor.
00:18:31Twenty-eight to Bob Willis, his best ever Test match score.
00:18:35Be nice to do that in your debut test as captain.
00:18:38And the unbeaten man, Paul Allert, on forty-one.
00:18:41And he must be getting into the all-rounder class, the way he's been batting in Test matches.
00:18:46The Indian bowlers, they started off well.
00:18:48Kapur Dev, with three in the first session yesterday.
00:18:51Finished with five for one hundred and twenty-five.
00:18:54Matlal, three for ninety-nine.
00:18:56And Dilip Doshi, who was a little disappointing in this game, looked a touch nervous to me all the way through.
00:19:00Two for one hundred and twenty.
00:19:02And Ravi Shastri struggled a little on this very good pitch.
00:19:06None for seventy-three.
00:19:07Yashpal Sharma, no we get for one.
00:19:09Both of them know to Parker.
00:19:10Who's got that through?
00:19:11So no need for anybody to run there, there's no third man of course, that ray of slips, anything piercing them going at that sort of pace, is four runs.
00:19:21And after long delay, the finger goes out, Parker still hasn't moved, didn't like it.
00:19:25It's another debatable OBW decision given here.
00:19:26So no need for anybody to run there, there's no third man of course, that ray of slips, anything piercing them going at that sort of pace, is four runs.
00:19:35And after long delay, the finger goes out, Parker still hasn't moved, didn't like it.
00:19:50It's another debatable OBW decision given here at Lawrence.
00:19:55The first one out, Parker goes, out for six, and the first wicket to fall in at 17.
00:20:00And umpire Evans is coming down to have a word with Phil Edmonds.
00:20:07The umpire might be saying that he's too close in, not too sure about how Edmonds will take that.
00:20:21The umpire, umpire Evans at the baller's end has gone down.
00:20:27They may well be asking that Edmonds make sure that he doesn't move as the stroke's being played.
00:20:39And then Saka is ready now.
00:20:41No ball.
00:20:51And one bouncer called in the over.
00:20:58I suppose a bouncer can be a no ball.
00:21:01Oh yes, must be.
00:21:10Got to be out that one.
00:21:12A lot of pressure on Ben Saka out there.
00:21:14And Willis hit him in the pads earlier this over.
00:21:17It was given not out and must have been very close.
00:21:20And that was absolutely plumb.
00:21:23Very good piece of bowling by Bob Willis, and it's 21 for two.
00:21:31Yeah!
00:21:32Yeah!
00:21:41No!
00:21:55No!
00:21:56We're closing the ring.
00:21:57No!
00:21:58Oh.
00:21:59Botham deserved that. Now, it's Vishwanath who is bowled by Botham and one that came through round about shin height, I would think.
00:22:12Well, Vishwanath was never happy here and he, with a high back lift, the ball sneaked through between bat and pad hitting his off stump.
00:22:29Botham to Yashpal Sharma. Again, cut that into him.
00:22:38Yashpal Sharma just helping it round the corner.
00:22:42And he's in and out LBW. So, Pringle, what a start for him.
00:22:55Wicked on his first over, Yashpal Sharma, LBW to Pringle.
00:22:59The very last ball of his first over in Test match cricket.
00:23:02Inducing the Indians to something of a shambles here now at 31 for four.
00:23:17Well, lulled into false sense of security. Pringle pitched that ball well up.
00:23:22And again, the Indian batsmen are back on, on the back foot with a, very near to those wickets.
00:23:32And botham quickly into action.
00:23:34This is the man they'd like to see the back of, but lovely off-drive there.
00:23:40Even Randy's bothering to chase that one.
00:23:43And he's nicely away. Once again, Rundle has given up the unequal chase.
00:24:02Quickly races down to that tappen boundary, and, uh, I'll punch off them out with four.
00:24:08And that came back very sharply, and the umpire's fingers gone up again.
00:24:20So, Mulhatra's turned this time to go out LBW. LBW to Pringle.
00:24:27Forty-five for five.
00:24:30Now, Pringle pitching one a little short.
00:24:35Outside the off stump and then...
00:24:38…the batsmen going back,leű it nipped down the hill quite considerably.
00:24:42.
00:24:45Well, there have been several brilliant catches in the gully.
00:24:59That was very nearly another one by Alan Lamb.
00:25:06And you can hear the round of applause.
00:25:08This really was a magnificent effort by Lamb.
00:25:11Short,
00:25:13cover-scar cutting,
00:25:14and a tremendous effort there,
00:25:18by the man.
00:25:26Beautiful stroke there from Capaldive.
00:25:30Edmund's giving the ball plenty of air.
00:25:34India's all-rounder crusted away through extra cover.
00:25:41The perfect off-drive,
00:25:43beautifully in position.
00:25:45Four runs.
00:26:11It's a nice shot from Capaldive.
00:26:12It's going to be restricted to two.
00:26:19Very quick piece of chasing there from Derek Randall.
00:26:25And what a day it was for England.
00:26:2792 for five,
00:26:28India,
00:26:29at the close of play on the second day.
00:26:31England having gone on to 433.
00:26:34And then 92 for five with the skipper,
00:26:37Gavaskar,
00:26:3841 not out.
00:26:39I thought that was a very good innings.
00:26:40He fought hard out there,
00:26:42kept his head down,
00:26:43and played extremely sensibly.
00:26:45And Capaldive,
00:26:4628 not out.
00:26:47But in the face of some spirited England bowling,
00:26:50Bob Willis was very pacey,
00:26:51got a lot of bounce,
00:26:52and only Gavaskar was able to combat him.
00:26:55One for 19,
00:26:56both of them two for 32.
00:26:58Two for 16 to Derek Pringle
00:27:00in his first test match.
00:27:01What a day for him.
00:27:02Edmunds and Allett didn't take a wicket,
00:27:05but there's still plenty of time for the rocks.
00:27:06In this first...
00:27:07England having gone on to 433.
00:27:21And then 92 for five with the skipper,
00:27:23Gavaskar,
00:27:2441 not out.
00:27:25I thought that was a very good innings.
00:27:26He fought hard out there,
00:27:28kept his head down,
00:27:29and played extremely sensibly.
00:27:31And Capaldive,
00:27:3228 not out.
00:27:33But in the face of some spirited England bowling,
00:27:36Bob Willis was very pacey,
00:27:37got a lot of bounce,
00:27:38and only Gavaskar was able to combat him.
00:27:41One for 19,
00:27:42both of them two for 32.
00:27:44Two for 16 to Derek Pringle
00:27:46in his first test match.
00:27:47What a day for him.
00:27:48Edmunds and Allett didn't take a wicket,
00:27:51but there's still plenty of time for the rocks.
00:27:53In this first over after lunch
00:27:54is Tom Graveney.
00:28:03Kept a little bit low.
00:28:08Yes, very little bounce here.
00:28:10Although it was fired in fairly short.
00:28:13And look at that,
00:28:13pitching, ooh,
00:28:15two yards in front of Bob Taylor.
00:28:18Very well taken.
00:28:19100 up for India.
00:28:40That's single to Capaldive,
00:28:42down to Adon Lamb at Deep Fine Leg.
00:28:45Capaldive goes to 32.
00:28:48Gavaskar is 45.
00:29:02A shot from Capaldive.
00:29:06Racing away down to the third man boundary.
00:29:10Made it down nicely.
00:29:11It was a sharply lifting delivery.
00:29:17Capaldive getting across behind this
00:29:19and chopping it down.
00:29:21Very good stroke indeed.
00:29:24Didn't back away or anything.
00:29:26Chopped it down
00:29:27and it went very quickly up the hill
00:29:29considering the amount of rain
00:29:31that we have had here.
00:29:41And beating the field again.
00:29:49Not with such pace this time.
00:29:55Jeff Cook, the fielder.
00:30:05Only just avoided
00:30:07kicking over his stumps there.
00:30:08That's a good bouncer.
00:30:16And the bouncer is signaled
00:30:17by umpire Evans.
00:30:20Which means under the
00:30:21playing conditions of this tour,
00:30:23that's the only one
00:30:23Willis is allowed to bowl
00:30:24in this over.
00:30:26Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
00:30:56Well done, well bowled.
00:31:22Cook takes the catch, but that was a very good delivery for Bob Willis.
00:31:32Kapil Dev had to play at it.
00:31:35He's gone now for 41, and it's 112 for six.
00:31:40What a good piece of bowling.
00:31:49And this one really climbs. Bob Willis putting everything in, right over the top of the off
00:31:55stump, and really Kapil Dev had no chance at all.
00:32:02Top edge and Geoff Cook running to his left takes a very good catch.
00:32:08With us now to Ravi Shastri.
00:32:23Oh, my God.
00:32:30Oh, my God.
00:32:36Oh, my God.
00:32:44It really took off again, and it gets Shastri off the mark, out of Bob Taylor's reach.
00:33:03And once again, a lot of life from Bob Willis there, see that ball climbing, but he got
00:33:13in a good position there, Shastri.
00:33:16A leg glance well wide of Bob Taylor.
00:33:21But it certainly makes one wonder whether it's worth having a leg slip, and I see Geoff Cook
00:33:28has gone in there just behind square.
00:33:31And what a good piece of captaincy to follow on the good bowling.
00:33:44Perfectly pitched delivery to take account of that man who had been moved into leg slip,
00:33:50and Shastri obliged a good sharp chance to Cook.
00:33:55And this just getting an inside edge, and there it goes.
00:34:00And Geoff Cook doesn't miss those.
00:34:02He's a very useful short leg.
00:34:04Fine piece of bowling by Bob Willis.
00:34:07He really is putting the pressure on India here.
00:34:20Oh, what a good ball.
00:34:28My word, this is a tremendous session for England.
00:34:35Not to be outdone, Ian Botham has chipped in with the wicket of the Indian captain,
00:34:40and the touring side now in complete disarray.
00:34:50And Ian Botham here, firing one in, and really speaking, I think Gavaskar played a little bit round that.
00:35:06He plucked his off stump out of the ground, but he was clipping that wide of mid on.
00:35:20That's why this fellow is such an entertainer, apart from some of the comical things he does.
00:35:43He's a good batsman, and a top class fielder.
00:35:50No matter where he goes in the world, he's much appreciated.
00:36:05Didn't play that with any great deal of confidence.
00:36:08I'm slightly bemused by this bouncer rule that's in, where there's only one allowed per over.
00:36:24That looked to me like an attempted bouncer.
00:36:28There's no signal came from the umpire.
00:36:30Now, what's gonna happen here?
00:36:47Well, I can't work this out at all.
00:36:50Well, it's very strange.
00:36:51All I saw from Barry Mayer there was a nod to Ian Botham,
00:36:56but there was no indication to the batsman that that was looked on as a bouncer.
00:37:0092 for five when play begins this morning.
00:37:28And there's four more to go to 126 for eight.
00:37:40Good shot, that from Martin Lull.
00:37:45126 for eight, six to Martin Lull, and four to Saeed Kiamani.
00:37:50And Bob Willis firing in away here.
00:38:02Another fine delivery.
00:38:05Look at that climbing.
00:38:18He really has bowled with a great deal of hostility.
00:38:24Well, Botham has struck again, and it's 128 for nine.
00:38:39Indian innings completely disintegrated now with Martin Lull, the man to go.
00:38:44Out for six.
00:38:45Botham claims another wicket.
00:38:47And 128 for nine.
00:38:53And once again, a good piece of bowling from Ian Botham here.
00:39:00Well pitched up, and just leaving him down the hill, and very tidily picked up by Chris Tappera at second slip.
00:39:10Down by his left boot.
00:39:14Bowling's been good.
00:39:15Catching's been good.
00:39:17And there's a real purpose about this England side.
00:39:21It's been too much for India.
00:39:24128 for nine, having started the day at 92 for five.
00:39:28And there are only two double-figure scores there, as you see.
00:39:35There's no festivities going on up on the Indian balcony.
00:39:44Last man, 34.
00:39:49Ashton, 34.
00:39:50Ashton, 34.
00:39:51Ashton, 34.
00:39:52Like, Can I live?
00:39:53That was a huge part.
00:39:54It's been a huge part.
00:39:55That's full of love.
00:40:03Oh, God.
00:40:09What's the name?
00:40:12I guess, did you see a thing?
00:40:16Botham picked up the last man, Dilip Doshi, fine catch by Bob Taylor, and five wickets
00:40:38in innings now for Ian Botham for the 19th time.
00:40:43All out 128 with Syed Kiamani remaining six not out.
00:40:50Fine performance from Ian Botham, an equally good one from Bob Willis who didn't get the
00:40:56same figures but bowled with great fire and pace here at Lourdes today.
00:41:0619.4 overs, three maintenance, five for 46 and an excellent piece of captaincy also by
00:41:13Bob Willis.
00:41:15And the very next thing Bob Willis did was to wave India in, he made them follow on as
00:41:19one might expect with that scorecard there.
00:41:22128 they made in their first innings, 48 to Gavaskar and 41 to Kapil Dev, the only double
00:41:29figure scores as indeed they were at the start of play.
00:41:32Well that was a dispiriting performance by India but a superb one by the England bowlers.
00:41:37Ian Botham, five for 46 and Bob Willis, three for 41 were the stars, two wickets to Derek
00:41:43Pringle but Pringle, Edmonds and Allett weren't needed today.
00:41:47The star Ian Botham, five wickets in innings now on 19 occasions in test cricket and he was
00:41:52at it again as soon as India went out to bat.
00:41:56Here he is now in the first over, it's the third ball and he's coming into bowl to Sunil
00:42:00Gavaskar and in the commentary box it's Tom Graveney and Jim Laker.
00:42:05And a super delivery this, see the way it's opened Gavaskar out, little nick and it just
00:42:27pitches in front of Derek Pringle at first slip.
00:42:32So give us Gavaskar please to nudge that away, get a single which takes him off the mark.
00:42:53So six on the board as Bob Willis starts a new over, dark of the face.
00:43:00Oh he's bowling all over the place.
00:43:06And despite all the practice between balls there coming from Cullum Parker, he really got himself in no position.
00:43:28Great error of judgment there.
00:43:32And he goes with just six on the board and he contributed just one way.
00:43:36Well Bob Willis slaps the ball in and occasionally brings it back.
00:43:44This one came back and Gavaskar gets across the wicket, covers his wicket up but the ball sneaks in, moves down the hill quite considerably.
00:43:56So Willis to bowl his first ball to Vence up.
00:44:08Well another fine over from Bob Willis, wicket maiden indeed.
00:44:12Three overs, one for five now.
00:44:14So Willis the real pace bowler in this particular match and all the batsmen have found it out.
00:44:28Baskar indeed.
00:44:30Only two please there to, as a single I think, get up the other end.
00:44:34Nobody at all has faced the pace bowling of Willis with any confidence whatsoever here.
00:44:42And that could really have gone anywhere.
00:44:56Let off there for Vence Arker.
00:45:00A disappointed guy there because he knows that could easily have come to him.
00:45:04Again, a short pitch ball catching Vence Arker on the shoulder of the bat.
00:45:14Taking his hand away from it as he strikes it but he just kept it down low enough for it to drop short of Gawr at the fourth slip.
00:45:25So Derek Pringle is the first, James.
00:45:28He's to be given a goal this time at the far end, the nursery end here at Lord's.
00:45:33A couple of wickets in the first innings when bowling from the pavilion end.
00:45:46Although the pitch are full, there haven't been too many of those.
00:45:49But Gawrskar are taking full advantage.
00:46:03All saved.
00:46:08And a lamb.
00:46:11Four runs.
00:46:25Good shot from Gillip Vence Arker.
00:46:27And Vence Arker getting his foot right across there.
00:46:35And driving that just in front of square.
00:46:40Played it again.
00:46:53It's two balls that were coming up quite sharply at Gawrskar.
00:46:58And he played them down beautifully.
00:47:01One on the off stump and one there around about his hip.
00:47:08He's a superb technician.
00:47:10See that he gets right behind this and pushes that down.
00:47:14Super piece of cricket.
00:47:18And he's gone.
00:47:32And Willis has picked up another wicket.
00:47:35Another fine short leg catch.
00:47:38And what a breakthrough that is for Willis.
00:47:44Great sight for English eyes to see the back of Sunil Gawrskar.
00:47:48So he goes for 24.
00:47:50And the total on 47 for two.
00:48:04Vence Arker's not bothering to run.
00:48:06And quite rightly so.
00:48:07No third man.
00:48:08And he middle up pretty well.
00:48:10So the 50 comes up for the Indians.
00:48:13It's been something of a battle.
00:48:15But they've reached it for the loss of two wickets.
00:48:17With Vence Arker taking his score to 26.
00:48:19With this fine square cut.
00:48:23Well in the last attempt to get a wicket.
00:48:25Steal a wicket before close of play.
00:48:28Bob Willis is putting everybody.
00:48:33Almost in an attacking position.
00:48:36Only one fielder on the leg side.
00:48:39Everyone else.
00:48:40And that's a deep long leg.
00:48:42Everyone else is on the off side.
00:48:45Oh.
00:48:48Close it was due.
00:48:56Both from finishing his final over.
00:48:59Digs it in short.
00:49:02Outside the off stump though.
00:49:04Shastri.
00:49:06Pushes tentatively.
00:49:08Doesn't quite get it into the middle.
00:49:09runs off the edge of his bat very nearly giving a catch to third slip
00:49:19well played right on top of that pushed it away he's not frightened to come back for a second
00:49:28india started off their second innings 305 behind england and they finished up at the close 61
00:49:34for two gavaskar is gone for 24 a fine piece of bowling that by bob willis so too the effort of
00:49:40dismissing parker early on in the innings fansaka showing some glimpses of top class form is 30
00:49:47not out and ravi shastri coming in as night watchman six not out 61 for two with bob willis
00:49:53taking both wickets at a cost of 37 in 13 overs and two maidens both of none for 19 in 12 and pringle
00:50:00bowled just the one over and had five runs taken from it so at the end of the third day
00:50:05the situation in this cornhill test is that england made 433 india 128 and 61 for two need 244 more
00:50:15runs to avoid and innings defeat that was a top class performance by the england side today and
00:50:20in fact all through the match after they got over being 37 for three on the first morning fine bowling
00:50:26today from both of them and particularly from bob willis i thought he was fast today he got plenty
00:50:31of bounce out of the pitch and his stamina absolutely first class and as far as i'm concerned he takes
00:50:37the accolade of this third day i was gone for 24 a fine piece of bowling that by bob willis
00:50:55so too the effort of dismissing parker early on in the innings fansaka showing some glimpses of top
00:51:01class form is 30 not out and ravi shastri coming in as night watchman six not out 61 for two with bob
00:51:08willis taking both wickets at a cost of 37 in 13 overs and two maidens both of none for 19 in 12 and
00:51:16pringle bowled just the one over and had five runs taken from it so at the end of the third day
00:51:22the situation in this cornhill test is that england made 433 india 128 and 61 for two need 244
00:51:31more runs to avoid and innings defeat absolutely first class and as far as i'm concerned he takes
00:51:38the accolade of this third day ben saka and in the commentary box tom graveney and jim laker not a run
00:51:44added to the overnight score they're finding his touch clicking it very nicely off his legs it's just going
00:51:52to roll over the line it's a convincing start for this uh tall angular number three batsman
00:52:01ben saka the man who made a very good hundred here when india were similarly placed in 1979
00:52:07that was an edge
00:52:19and i don't think there's much doubt here that that was a sharp chance down to chris taver his right boot
00:52:27and that's his 50. short outside the off stamp put away in convincing style by ben saka another good 50 to the indian
00:52:48that's edged away
00:52:58so things not quite going right for our slip fielders this morning
00:53:09i'm just about got his fingers underneath it obviously a very very difficult chance
00:53:15i suppose we'll have to put that down there's another chance three sharp ones this morning that one went
00:53:27very very fast
00:53:38it was just around the corner
00:53:52so
00:54:04Some excellent cricket here, good delivery from Paul Allett, nearly crept through, very
00:54:13close to LBW, quick single, Phil Edmonds coming in there, picking it up and throwing in one
00:54:18movement, and cracking out a stump.
00:54:25Actually he deserves that, Paul Allett, because just about every ball he's poiled has been
00:54:34on a good line and length, he's been moving it off the seam, down the hill, into the right
00:54:39handers, and that one, I reckon, we'll see, has just held its own.
00:54:48Well he pitches it up from a good length, the batsman doesn't move forward as he had been
00:54:53doing earlier, and it just nips a little in, beats his bat, goes between his bat and pats,
00:55:00knocking the off stump out, a very good wicket for Paul Allett there.
00:55:08Single is broken through, that's two very, very valuable strikes for England.
00:55:15First of all, Shastri, the night watchman going, and then Viswanath, out caught down the leg
00:55:20side by Bob Taylor.
00:55:23One thirty for four, that's how could I face?
00:55:48Yes.
00:55:50In fact, Jasper Sharma.
00:55:53Have you got it?
00:56:10That's well pulled.
00:56:11Like a real quick leg break down the hill here.
00:56:17Sort of thing that's been happening on this pitch here this morning.
00:56:20Every now and again one really moves.
00:56:23And a Richard Bennu or a Bruce Dooland would have been pleased with that.
00:56:29Very fast movement.
00:56:42One more ball.
00:56:44Some real spin there.
00:56:46Just two more balls balled before lunch.
00:56:48No addition to the score.
00:56:50132 for four.
00:56:51Splendid innings that from Dilip Vensaka.
00:56:5365 not out.
00:56:55He played some lovely strokes.
00:56:56And the two wickets that went, Ravi Shastri for 23, he did a good job as night watchman.
00:57:01But the cruel blow for the touring side was Gundapa Viswanath.
00:57:05Out for three.
00:57:06Caught down the leg side by Bob Taylor.
00:57:08Yashpal Sharma hung in there for 14 not out with Dilip Vensaka.
00:57:12132 for four at the luncheon interval.
00:57:15We pick up play now in the second over after the interval.
00:57:19Just one run added to 133 for four.
00:57:21That came from a no ball.
00:57:23And Derek Pringle's coming in to bowl to Dilip Vensaka.
00:57:26With me in the commentary box is Tom Graveney.
00:57:28Not given.
00:57:40Vensaka made no move to go.
00:57:42Well, it's pretty odd.
00:57:52There's a big deflection there.
00:57:55Four runs.
00:58:04Adding a little bit of insult to what went before.
00:58:09That's a good stroke from Vensaka.
00:58:14Takes him on now to 69.
00:58:15The right has to run for here.
00:58:27The right has to run for here.
00:58:27Four run there to Jeff Cook and 150 comes up.
00:58:57And this really can't be a very good sight for the Indians.
00:59:12That turned, lifted.
00:59:16And I'm quite certain it hit the shoulder of the bat.
00:59:27A good hooker, this fellow.
00:59:34And then he plays the pull shot equally well.
00:59:40And his short arm stroke.
00:59:42A really magnificent shot, this.
00:59:45See the way he got in behind it.
00:59:47It's Vensaka facing.
01:00:00Short one.
01:00:00A hook to wear very positively.
01:00:05That's a good, firm stroke there from Vensaka.
01:00:09Makes him four runs.
01:00:10Takes him on to 96.
01:00:11That's it.
01:00:23Vensaka steering that very nicely.
01:00:26Very comfortably down to third man for another boundary.
01:00:28The boundary that sees him into three figures.
01:00:31About aloft.
01:00:32And what a very good hundred this has been.
01:00:35Boarded by his teammates, by his partner.
01:00:37And his hundred coming out of 183 for four.
01:00:47Six hundred in a test match.
01:00:49Twelve fours.
01:00:50And he's received just 200 balls.
01:00:52Tempted yorker.
01:01:03Beautifully stroked away by Vensaka.
01:01:15Missed up a full toss.
01:01:16Even then the batsman was going back as his first movement.
01:01:33Shot.
01:01:34He's picked that up.
01:01:36Well, from about three parts of the way up the height of the stumps, I think.
01:01:40A little of a fearful thump away down to the tavern.
01:01:57Four more.
01:01:58Too short.
01:02:02150 up for Vensaka.
01:02:06Top class innings, this.
01:02:07And those runs made out of 244.
01:02:13That's the total.
01:02:15When Vensaka came in yesterday.
01:02:20At number three.
01:02:22There were six runs on the board.
01:02:24So he's made 150 out of 238, in fact.
01:02:32We'll list Vensaka.
01:02:34Okay.
01:02:37That's a beautiful shot.
01:02:41Really got into an excellent position there.
01:02:43Waited for it.
01:02:44And clipped it away.
01:02:50That's a short one.
01:02:51He's hooked it high and handsomely.
01:02:53But he's beautifully caught down at long leg.
01:02:56So the end of Vensaka.
01:03:01Great disappointment to him and to the Indians.
01:03:04He's played so well after hitting that great four.
01:03:07Got the bounce.
01:03:07Hooked it away down to long leg.
01:03:09And on 157, he's made it 252 for five, India.
01:03:15So the congratulations to Paul Allett down there.
01:03:18Got himself a little bit in a tangle to begin with.
01:03:24Took a fair amount of judging down there.
01:03:27Got the applause, and quite rightly, for a magnificent hundred, this.
01:03:30157 coming in, 3.32 minutes off, 2.61 goals.
01:03:39So Bob Willis on his way in from the pavilion end.
01:03:44And he's bowling with a real good one.
01:03:46Lipped down the hill.
01:03:49And what a good spell this has been to get rid of Vensaka and now account for his partner
01:03:53who defended so stoutly for 37.
01:03:55It makes India 252 for six.
01:04:03And it gives a fourth wicket to Bob Willis.
01:04:08And what a game he's had.
01:04:09Big Bob as first as captain.
01:04:12Valuable runs for England.
01:04:13His top score in a test match.
01:04:16And wickets all the way down the line.
01:04:17Copeland over way, his first runs.
01:04:31See what the much shorter Malhotra can make of this Willis bounce.
01:04:40He's calling in third man.
01:04:43Jeff Cook, dropping into the slip area.
01:04:54That's Hedge, and it's beautifully caught.
01:04:56What a great catch that was.
01:04:58Never have carried a slip there, and Taylor really has picked up some marvellous catches
01:05:02in this series to date.
01:05:03So Malhotra out for another nought.
01:05:09254 for seven, and five wickets now to Bob Willis.
01:05:12well that's edged away and he's dropped
01:05:29well isn't that much joy here in both of them today
01:05:34and here kapil dev trying the big drive not getting his foot very close and leaning back
01:05:47and that uh bisected the slips and it was very difficult from here to tell which one had a go
01:05:55at it it's not a couple dev tried him with the bouncer and he's placed it again pretty well
01:06:09two men once again back for the catch edmunds there and allert doing the retrieving dropped
01:06:16it right between them and that's edged and it's taken this time all right
01:06:28well finally this one has gone down in the slips
01:06:33and the applause there for the combination of gaur and and willis
01:06:42so 275 for eight come on he goes
01:06:48willis himself today has gone past the 250 wicket mark for england
01:06:56only three other bowlers ahead of him for england freddie truman
01:07:00with 307 derrick underwood 297 and brian statham 252 bob willis has 251 now
01:07:08and uh in all time wicket takers
01:07:12bob willis is now seventh in the list
01:07:15four more
01:07:24okay with a 300 mark now india
01:07:29303 for eight
01:07:3539 kapal dev and martin lull has gone on to five
01:07:41that's all they need to make england bad again
01:07:51what a great shot
01:08:04lovely way to reach a half century
01:08:14what a perfectly timed play that was
01:08:19six and nine fours and has faced only 35 balls in that innings of 53
01:08:27and even though uh he was nowhere near that really
01:08:45still got away very very solidly through the picket end looks as though he enjoyed it
01:08:50and he's gone this time
01:09:00and pringle strikes again
01:09:03the second wicket of the innings
01:09:06pringle will be being called golden arm soon because here he
01:09:13a simple straightforward ball
01:09:18pushed it a little down the slope
01:09:22don't even bother with people
01:09:36it's a great hit
01:09:39well that was a superbly timed shot
01:09:44two strides down the wicket and really met it wonderfully well
01:09:48well if he hadn't have timed this so well he could well have been out
01:09:55but he's there pushing it over wide of mid off
01:10:01great timed hit
01:10:03he's done it again
01:10:08he strikes the ball so cleanly this way
01:10:15well not the greatest is it
01:10:2225 test matches
01:10:23he's just scrambled 100 runs
01:10:26and that includes today's four not out
01:10:29well it's all over
01:10:38swung away
01:10:39a couple of nervous fall on both of them
01:10:41has long last taken up his uh wicket
01:10:43won his strife all the way through
01:10:46swinging hard at that last delivery
01:10:48and caught again by cook at mid wicket
01:10:50what a marvellous effort that was uh for the indians
01:10:54particularly dilip vensaka
01:10:56157 there and he hardly played a false stroke
01:11:00throughout the innings not only that
01:11:01we played some that live in the memory
01:11:03of everyone here at lords
01:11:05on this fourth day
01:11:07yashpal sharma 37 gave good support
01:11:09and then came the fireworks
01:11:11kapil dev that 89
01:11:13must have had him very much in line
01:11:15for the fastest century of all time
01:11:17on the basis of the number of balls faced
01:11:19we can remember back as far as
01:11:21gilbert jessop who hit 175 balls
01:11:23and roy fredericks the west indian in perth
01:11:25hit 100 off 71
01:11:27that was way back in 75
01:11:28six when the west indians toured australia
01:11:30but today kapil dev
01:11:32was set fair
01:11:34to break both those records
01:11:36until he holed out to
01:11:37jeff cook or fee and both of them
01:11:39good partnership that between kapil dev
01:11:41and mud and lull
01:11:42they added 66 for the ninth wicket
01:11:44a fine effort there
01:11:45but for the england bowlers
01:11:47full credit there to the skipper bob willis
01:11:49because at tea time
01:11:51he didn't have any wickets today
01:11:53but then he came through
01:11:54and picked up another four
01:11:55and that gave england the chance
01:11:57to break through
01:11:58and set themselves up for victory
01:11:59pringle picked up two
01:12:01from 19 overs
01:12:02and paul allett one
01:12:04but a splendid effort again
01:12:05from bob willis
01:12:06who came back
01:12:06with that second new ball
01:12:08and worked very very hard indeed
01:12:10for his side
01:12:11and eventually got through to the stage
01:12:13where they needed
01:12:14only 65 to win
01:12:16having bowled out india
01:12:17in their second innings
01:12:19we pick up play now in the first over
01:12:20it's the second ball
01:12:21and kapil dev
01:12:22is coming in to bowl
01:12:23to jeff cook
01:12:24in the commentary box
01:12:25it's jim laker
01:12:26and brian close
01:12:27jeff cook nicely away
01:12:33but quietly through mid wicket
01:12:37just through the fielder
01:12:38and hopes his account
01:12:41with two runs
01:12:41he's in there
01:12:49so the first wicket down
01:12:52and asked to be of course
01:12:54kapil dev
01:12:55what a day he's having
01:12:56so Tavry gone
01:12:5911 on the board
01:13:00so Chris Tavry out for three
01:13:08slight amount of pressure
01:13:11in the shape of a silly point
01:13:13a short leg
01:13:13but still got a third man
01:13:19back under deep long leg
01:13:20there he laid a bat on that
01:13:29and knocks
01:13:29here in a second
01:13:30there's no single
01:13:34so Bob Taylor to face again
01:13:39and they're asking this time
01:13:43and he's giving him out
01:13:44Bob Taylor not wanting to go
01:13:46but how many batsmen do these days
01:13:48but double quick there
01:13:50was the bat onto pad
01:13:52and a little dolly catch
01:13:52the short leg
01:13:53so the ploy of the night
01:13:55watchman has failed
01:13:56England 13 for two
01:13:57with Taylor out for a single
01:13:59and a big shout
01:14:11going up again
01:14:12and a long wait
01:14:14and he's giving him out
01:14:15long long delay there
01:14:17and word
01:14:19Barry Mayer keeps these men
01:14:21wandering and waiting
01:14:22doesn't he
01:14:22what about that then
01:14:2565 were needed for victory
01:14:27at the start of that innings
01:14:28and still 42 to go
01:14:307 wickets in hand
01:14:31just coming into Baldwin
01:14:32victory at the start of that innings
01:14:50and still 42 to go
01:14:527 wickets in hand
01:14:53just coming into Baldwin
01:14:54and with me in the commentary box
01:14:55is Tom Graveney
01:14:56good shot
01:14:59spin out the nets this morning
01:15:02first boundary of this innings
01:15:10magnificent stroke that
01:15:13by Alan Am
01:15:14perfectly balanced
01:15:16in swinging half volley
01:15:19picks it up off his toes
01:15:22very quickly down the hill
01:15:24for four
01:15:25we've already seen once this summer
01:15:41how well this pair run together
01:15:42Lamb thinks he's hit it well enough
01:15:50he's didn't bother starting off
01:15:53gas started to come through for it
01:15:54but Lamb had it all organised
01:15:57nicely stroked away
01:15:59and very nicely placed over
01:16:01extra cover
01:16:02and moving down the wicket
01:16:06very very well
01:16:07nicely placed
01:16:18nicely placed
01:16:18mountain lull
01:16:21man down at
01:16:23deep fine leg
01:16:25running again
01:16:27three there
01:16:29where at one stage it looked
01:16:30that there might only be two
01:16:33once again good footwork
01:16:42she's balling without an outfield
01:16:47which is very ambitious
01:16:48as soon as that ball goes up in the air
01:16:52a little bit
01:16:53Alan Lamb
01:16:54down the wicket
01:16:55strikes that very firmly over mid on
01:16:59I reckon that was worth a shout
01:17:09it was going down lakeside I should think
01:17:11but not by very much
01:17:13Alan Lamb came right across
01:17:15played across the front pad
01:17:16as well bold
01:17:40they had him in one two or three mines
01:17:43and yet
01:17:43the Lamb was still able to get it away
01:17:45along the ground
01:17:46and pick up two runs
01:17:48and this delivery is definitely flighted
01:17:54quite tossed up
01:17:55and Alan starts to sweep in fact
01:17:58and then straightens it out
01:18:00rolls the wrists
01:18:03and pushes it round the corner for two runs
01:18:05this went very fine again
01:18:15and neither of them
01:18:22able to cut off the boundary
01:18:24it was a very useful delivery
01:18:34it was a very useful delivery that one
01:18:35even on the brink of defeat
01:18:39Kapil Dev is not giving up
01:18:40managed to get that one to cut away
01:18:43very very sharply from David Gar
01:18:45picks up three runs
01:18:48goes into double figures
01:18:49and that pitching
01:18:55midland leg and going down the hill
01:18:57but
01:18:59the ball not really bouncing
01:19:03dropping well in front of
01:19:04the Indian skipper
01:19:08there's two of them
01:19:25well Pranap Roy is having a problem or two out there
01:19:30substituting for
01:19:35well it's either for
01:19:37Gulen Parker or for Dilip Vensaka
01:19:39Vensaka apparently
01:19:40there's a slight strain
01:19:42and he's gone
01:19:50yes or no
01:19:52well there's shouts
01:19:53it was caught
01:19:54Shastry was asking
01:19:58but umpire
01:19:59David Evans said no
01:20:01I think we'll find David Garrow
01:20:02almost got to that full toss
01:20:04and I think it was a bit of a trap
01:20:06shot
01:20:08there's left hand batsmen
01:20:16who always have a lot of trouble
01:20:19as the game goes on
01:20:21with the rough stuff outside
01:20:22their off stump
01:20:38and still a little bit of life in this wicket if you put it in
01:20:52that one bouncing very high
01:20:54and Alan Lamb sensibly ducking underneath it
01:20:59looks to be enjoying himself out there
01:21:09couple dev
01:21:09certainly no intention of giving up
01:21:12even though
01:21:13there's still seven wickets needed
01:21:15and almost the minimum number of runs
01:21:19and that's it
01:21:23victory for England
01:21:27by seven wickets
01:21:29over India
01:21:31here at Lord's
01:21:32in the first cornhole match
01:21:33of this 1982 series
01:21:35and that will be
01:21:37a very very sweet victory indeed
01:21:40because India
01:21:41in the recent series
01:21:43in their own country
01:21:44defeated England
01:21:46at Bombay
01:21:47by 138 runs
01:21:49in the first match of the series
01:21:50and then there were four draws
01:21:52Kapal Dev
01:21:56is congratulated
01:21:58and
01:21:59Lamb and Gower
01:22:01the two men
01:22:02who saw England through this morning
01:22:04having come together at 18 for three
01:22:07finished up at 67 for three
01:22:09with Lamb
01:22:1037 not out
01:22:11and Gower
01:22:12and Gower 14 not out
01:22:13that in the end was quite a conclusive victory
01:22:17by seven wickets for England
01:22:19nice innings that by Alan Lamb
01:22:2137 not out
01:22:22David Gower
01:22:2314 not out
01:22:24one or two awkward moments this morning
01:22:26when the ball spun a little bit
01:22:28and Kapal Dev still bowled very well
01:22:29even though there was no chance
01:22:31for India
01:22:3237 not out to Lamb
01:22:34including one or two hefty strokes
01:22:36away down the ground
01:22:37three for 43
01:22:38to Kapal Dev
01:22:39the only wickets to fall
01:22:41in that England second innings
01:22:42a fine performance that from him
01:22:44and a tremendous all-round effort
01:22:46also
01:22:47a fine performance from the man
01:22:48who now accepts the check
01:22:50for winning this Cornhill test match
01:22:52and what a marvellous match
01:22:54he has had
01:22:55he came in
01:22:56as perhaps a surprise choice
01:22:57as captain Bob Willis
01:22:59he did nothing wrong on the field
01:23:01that I could see
01:23:01and he's won the match
01:23:03by seven wickets
01:23:04and that is a lovely little piece
01:23:05of revenge
01:23:06for England
01:23:07who had so many problems
01:23:08in India
01:23:09on the recent tour
01:23:10so a great start for Bob Willis
01:23:12and a great match
01:23:13for the all-rounder Kapal Dev
01:23:15who only a few moments later
01:23:16was named as man of the match
01:23:18by former England fast bowler
01:23:20Fred Trulman
01:23:21tremendous performance
01:23:22batting
01:23:22bowling
01:23:23and fielding by him
01:23:24and what a challenge it is
01:23:26between Kapal Dev
01:23:27and Ian Botham
01:23:28at the moment
01:23:28for the accolade
01:23:30of the finest all-rounder
01:23:31in the world
