00:00:00We'll win the first test and let the English media do the rest, said Ricky Ponting after
00:00:06Lords, and it was no surprise that the press were so quick to show their feelings after
00:00:11England had capitulated.
00:00:13Unbound enthusiasm before the series quickly turned to despondency and criticism on those
00:00:18back pages.
00:00:19Expectation levels were sinking fast.
00:00:22The question was, how would the England players react to it all?
00:00:25Andrew Flintoff and Marcus Traskothic were able to put the pressure of the Ashes to one
00:00:29side as they competed in a frenetic 2020 finals day, and it was the Somerset batsman who was
00:00:35celebrating as his side beat Flintoff's Lancashire in the final.
00:00:39There were calls for more players to spend time in the middle with their counties, but
00:00:43Michael Vaughan chose not to play for Yorkshire in anything but a one-day game.
00:00:48Mind you, he made a hundred and that, which was a timely return to form.
00:00:53England added Paul Collingwood to their squad after miserable weather and even a typhoon
00:00:57battered the Midlands.
00:00:59There was talk then that the extra batsman may replace Ashley Giles.
00:01:03The Warwickshire spinner felt he'd been harshly treated by the press after the Lords mauling,
00:01:07and so he decided to use the papers to openly criticise the critics.
00:01:13The Australians meanwhile arrested some of their big guns for their county game up at Worcestershire.
00:01:17Jason Gillespie played and took a couple of wickets, but his rival for a place in the
00:01:21side, Michael Kasparovic, took five for 67 to stake his claim, for a start at Edgbaston.
00:01:27But it was to be another fast bowler who would catch the attention on the morning of the match.
00:01:33This is a ground that ignites passionate fervour amongst English supporters, if Lords is a
00:01:46sort of classical recital, then matches at Edgbaston are more of a rock concert.
00:01:52And the queues stretch down the roads outside the ground, with people really believing that
00:01:56England could do something.
00:01:58Perhaps they remembered the uncanny way that things seem to go England's way at this place.
00:02:03In the moments before the game, Glen McGrath, warming up with a rugby ball, trod on a cricket
00:02:08ball.
00:02:09It was a disastrous moment and he was taken from the field with no chance of playing.
00:02:15Moments later, he was off to hospital for an x-ray.
00:02:21Here are the sides then.
00:02:22McGrath's ankle injury means that Michael Kasparovic plays after all, otherwise no change
00:02:26with the Australians, and there's no change at all for the English side.
00:02:30What about that?
00:02:31What a luxury, especially on the back of such a beating at Lords, to play exactly the same
00:02:35team.
00:02:36The selectors showing faith, and that could be no bad thing.
00:02:39Neither did the pitch look a bad thing.
00:02:42Good to bat first on, we thought.
00:02:46We're ready for the toss.
00:02:47Here it goes.
00:02:48Heads.
00:02:49Heads is the call.
00:02:52It is a head, Ricky.
00:02:53Heads it is.
00:02:55Ricky Ponding has won the toss.
00:02:57What are you going to do, Ricky?
00:02:58We're going to have a bowl this morning, mate, with the overhead conditions the way they
00:02:59are, and the wicket probably being still a few days behind, even after a couple of days
00:03:02of sun.
00:03:03Hopefully we can do some damage this morning.
00:03:05We're going to have a little bit of a bit of a ball, if we can do some damage, but it's
00:03:12the score.
00:03:13It's the same.
00:03:14The head is fast to an iron off.
00:03:15The head is fast to an iron off.
00:03:16We're going to have a lot of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit
00:03:17of a bit of a bit of a ball.
00:03:18Well, the outfield passed to an arrow or not.
00:03:29Nice, juicy half volley, and that was open for easy.
00:03:32Don't worry about this outfield, which said, I've heard it many times.
00:03:36It's very good.
00:03:43Three lovely strokes by Krzysztof.
00:03:48That's a drop, a difficult drop.
00:03:58Left hand, shame worn, not easy, but definitely catchable.
00:04:10Well, the batsmen have summed up the pitch pretty quickly.
00:04:13And there's four more.
00:04:22Much in the same fashion that Krzysztof has peppered that cover boundary all morning.
00:04:26With ease, this time at Strauss.
00:04:36No ball.
00:04:38No ball.
00:04:40No ball.
00:04:41Wow.
00:04:43He's just overstipped.
00:04:48There he goes.
00:04:56Really good stroke from Strauss in more ways than one.
00:05:00Not just that he executed the stroke very well, but it sends a signal.
00:05:05But England have rather changed their game plan.
00:05:08And they're going to look to attack worn down the ground.
00:05:10Oh, that's a terrific hit.
00:05:15Goodness me.
00:05:19Ah, we're just more than an hour into the match, too.
00:05:22That's the slider.
00:05:23That's the slider.
00:05:24And well driven by Treskothic.
00:05:25And that couple brings up a very nice half century for the Somerset man.
00:05:37Nothing better than that played by Andrew Strauss that we've seen this morning.
00:05:54And what a wonderful change of pace that was.
00:06:06That's the real art of leg spinning.
00:06:09A really quick delivery.
00:06:13Well, it's a marvellous piece of bowling from Shane Warne.
00:06:17Spinning it out of that rough.
00:06:19Quicker pace, as Richie Beno said.
00:06:21But I think Andrew Strauss is going to be disappointed with himself.
00:06:25Hitting against the spin.
00:06:27Trying to pick that gap at cover.
00:06:29And falling too short of what would have been a good half century.
00:06:32112 for one.
00:06:36Beautiful stroke.
00:06:37The best of the lot.
00:06:43Very, very expensive over from Brett Lee.
00:06:47And it was the last boundary that was the best of the lot from Treskothic.
00:06:51Finished off.
00:06:52A clinical morning's work for England.
00:06:56They've got themselves back in this series.
00:07:03England in an exceptionally strong position at lunch.
00:07:05132 for one.
00:07:06And the weather improving.
00:07:08Lovely for batting.
00:07:09Even Australia, by their standard, looking a bit ragged.
00:07:13Michael Clarke unnecessarily shy.
00:07:16And it costing four.
00:07:18It got Michael Vaughan going.
00:07:20And even the words of Horatio Nelson were echoing around Edgbaston.
00:07:25They do, sir.
00:07:26And you know what?
00:07:27They are.
00:07:29Gorgeous shot.
00:07:32Now that's footwork.
00:07:33That's quality.
00:07:34And that's class.
00:07:36You've lost control of the game if you're Australia at the moment.
00:07:39It doesn't matter that you're world champions.
00:07:41You're the best side in the world.
00:07:43Absolutely.
00:07:44For the last decade or more.
00:07:45But at the moment, they've no control at all.
00:07:47Whoever bowls, they can't seem to hold one end up, never mind both.
00:07:52Where they make England work or struggle or just make it hard for England.
00:08:02He's going straight through Justin Langer at carbon.
00:08:05He's filthy with himself.
00:08:06He was hit firmly.
00:08:07But that really is the sign of how Australia are going.
00:08:12They've been messy.
00:08:18A little outside edge on 90 walks.
00:08:20So finally, Australia get their second wicket.
00:08:25It's been a long haul.
00:08:26It's been hard work.
00:08:27We're only into the second session.
00:08:28But they'll feel like they've been out there for a whole lot longer than that.
00:08:32Watch how wide this is.
00:08:34Long way away from his body.
00:08:37Well bowled to Michael Kaspovic for getting him to play a wide one.
00:08:45That's a very positive innings by Marcus Treskothi.
00:08:50164 for two.
00:08:55Ian Bell.
00:08:56He's batting number four for England.
00:08:58And he'll be nervous.
00:09:02That'll do.
00:09:04Whoa.
00:09:05That's probably a little bit of nervous energy that's allowed him to launch into that.
00:09:09But nothing wrong with that stroke at all.
00:09:13Out.
00:09:14Out.
00:09:15Out.
00:09:16Out.
00:09:17Out.
00:09:18No doubt at all about that.
00:09:19That was a forward shot but not really a convincing.
00:09:21Didn't really play at it confidently.
00:09:24And that's beautifully bowled because it left the batsman.
00:09:29Well this is the time for Australia.
00:09:30They can turn things around.
00:09:31They've got new batsmen coming to the crease.
00:09:33They can really attack.
00:09:34The good thing about Kaspovic is he goes hard at the stumps.
00:09:37He's always in the hunt when a new batsman is there.
00:09:41And he finally got the breakthrough of Treskothic.
00:09:43And bang bang he's got the second.
00:09:45It's 170 for three.
00:09:46Now then there is a man down the fence.
00:09:51But he's close to the fence.
00:09:53Brett Lee has got it.
00:09:55That was by no means an easy catch.
00:09:57It was swirling around.
00:09:59And so was he for that matter.
00:10:01And finally he's got himself in a position to take it.
00:10:06Not quite what Captain ordered.
00:10:09It was a fantastic catch.
00:10:12It was up there for a long time.
00:10:14It was downwind.
00:10:15It looked for a second as if it was going for six.
00:10:18Got a good shot by the captain.
00:10:21He'd be disappointed with that.
00:10:23To get into the 20s you should be looking at 100.
00:10:25It's 187 for four now.
00:10:35Cut!
00:10:36One will be partly happy and partly extremely unhappy with that.
00:10:47Because he's beaten Flintoff in flight.
00:10:49Not a pleased point.
00:10:53One of the most amazing things about Peterson is the power.
00:11:06All right.
00:11:19Good punch.
00:11:20He hit that.
00:11:21Oh, my goodness me.
00:11:22oh my goodness me and again and he doesn't know where that is but it's
00:11:29gone for four it's gone for six well he tucked his head in it was almost a blind
00:11:35shot when the ball hit the middle of the bed
00:11:42oh that's a few don't worry about that
00:11:47no shame watch out it cuts there's a fella in the crowd stood up to try and
00:11:52get it and that's his off century that's beautifully played it crashes into the
00:12:01boundary at cover Andrew Flintoff a lot's expected of him with bat and ball and
00:12:07he's got the crowd here at Edgbaston on their feet
00:12:12oh he's hit that one well too that's a very good shot it's not easy to play a
00:12:22leg spinner through that area and keep the ball on the ground and there's another
00:12:27bouncer it's in the air it's gone for six it's a big six it's gone back miles
00:12:34that's out caught behind
00:12:44that was a very good delivery thick edge and that's the end of what was a fantastic partnership
00:12:54250 wickets for Jason Gillespie it's been an onslaught something very rare and Flintoff
00:13:02was responsible for a lot of that with his 68 it's 290 for five
00:13:07caught behind of course he is up goes the finger a huge nick there Jones staying at the crease
00:13:22but no doubt about that a little bit of extra bounce there perhaps a little bit of extra pace
00:13:27and a big nick and so well England's starting to lose wickets and that's not good news
00:13:33Kasper wits is the man yet again that's his third and it's 293 for six
00:13:38and Peterson plays another remarkable stroke
00:13:50that is a very fine innings three knocks against Australia and three fifties
00:13:58he really does hit the ball well you know that old line about he's worth the admission money alone
00:14:08he really is
00:14:10that looked as though it would have to be very very close it was a quicker ball looked like the straight one
00:14:28and it's pitched in line and that I reckon would have hit middle and off
00:14:3423 by Giles 342 for seven now
00:14:39Crikey O'Reilly
00:14:52he's got again and he's out caught
00:14:59he won't have picked up too many wickets in a test match quite like that
00:15:03English supporters might rue Peterson's adventure
00:15:09it wasn't quite off the middle of the bat from Peterson
00:15:12Cadditch came in judged it well
00:15:16well thought needed the correct movement it needed to be on balance and Peterson has played really well
00:15:2371 from 76 balls that's a good knock 348 for eight and a standing ovation
00:15:33and that could be out
00:15:37out of the ground
00:15:39top edge for six
00:15:43and that will be four more
00:15:46the crowd loving it
00:15:48catch
00:16:00oh what a reply
00:16:09the slider straight out of the front of the hand
00:16:12well he deceived Armisen here got it very full
00:16:16it was almost through him as he tried to play it to leg
00:16:22it's a wonderful picture that
00:16:25he's bamboozled all right 375 for nine
00:16:29sixer
00:16:37it's another good hit is it
00:16:46not quite good enough to reach the boundary but it does bring up England's 400
00:16:5178 overs
00:16:54into the 79th we are
00:16:57and Edgerton stands to acclaim a thrilling batting display
00:17:02which came to an end soon after that and Matthew Hoggard was LBW to Shane Warne
00:17:09the ball pitching between wicket and wicket hitting him between wicket and wicket and Hawkeye proving LBW
00:17:16407 then a few players there might have liked to have gone on to bigger totals
00:17:20but essentially it was such an entertaining day it's hard to be too critical of it
00:17:24Warne is a stayer he picked up four for 116 in a brave and a gutsy effort
00:17:29three for Kaspervic two for Gillespie and one for Lee
00:17:33now we thought we were going to get 25 minutes of Australia facing the wrath of England's new ball
00:17:37but the rain came down so everybody went back into the pavilion
00:17:41and that was it for the day
00:17:43and Hayden wasn't over the top of it nothing to do with the pitch the pitch is as it was yesterday
00:18:08and Hoggard has struck a magnificent play
00:18:14poor form continues for Matthew Hayden
00:18:19just a fairly innocuous delivery really but credit to Michael Vaughan
00:18:24they had a very strange offside feel there
00:18:26two men on the drive
00:18:28Strauss and Pedersen it went to the second man
00:18:30Strauss, Hayden gone for a blob
00:18:32he's got five for it
00:18:52Pedersen seems to be of the opinion that he had ponting
00:18:57no wonder Pedersen was saying
00:19:03for goodness sake
00:19:05many better players in the world
00:19:12and ponting at their legs
00:19:14absolute gift to him
00:19:17well he's rolled his wrist beautifully on that
00:19:23oh that's a good shot and it'll go for four
00:19:37pointing plays the pull shot as well as anyone in the game
00:19:40oh that's well played
00:19:44that was a bad delivery
00:19:45you heard the grunt from the other end
00:19:47Armisen knew straight away
00:19:49he was being a bit optimistic there
00:19:51and it's gone to four
00:19:52now there's a beautiful stroke
00:20:03dare one say it
00:20:10that does show you pontings in good nick
00:20:12fabulous
00:20:15supreme straight driving
00:20:21four more
00:20:27it's a poor ball
00:20:28but Ricky Ponting has gone to a breathtaking 50 here at Edgbaston
00:20:33superlative stuff from the captain of Australia
00:20:36it's in the back of his mind that he put England into bat
00:20:39and people say he shouldn't have done
00:20:40so now he's going to make it good himself
00:20:43actually Giles into the attack for the first time today
00:20:47England's beleaguered left arm spinner
00:20:50rolled 11 overs for 56 at Lord's got a bit of stick for it
00:20:55and hasn't stopped responding to the critics since
00:20:57that's out
00:21:03oh yes top edge
00:21:04that's a big wicket
00:21:05Giles is struck
00:21:06well ponting going for the little
00:21:10but it's a tentative shot
00:21:11wasn't it
00:21:11it's a little tentative sweep shot
00:21:13he didn't really get stuck into it
00:21:16it may just have flipped the edge of the rough there
00:21:18hit the top edge of the bat
00:21:19and it was a little lollipop
00:21:21well it's not that easy a bowler to sweep Ashley Giles
00:21:25because he's tall
00:21:26and he does get a little bit of bounce
00:21:28and it's the bounce that's the problem here for Ponting
00:21:30that top edge
00:21:31going straight to Michael Vaughan
00:21:34as easy as you like
00:21:35and that's a nice blow for Ashley Giles
00:21:37after a lot of criticism
00:21:38or criticism that he perceived to be
00:21:40against him throughout the week
00:21:42Ponting gone for 61
00:21:4488 for 2
00:21:44and just watch the reaction
00:21:48it's a very animated reaction
00:21:51from the England players
00:21:52with Ashley Giles
00:21:53and I think that's
00:21:54them saying to Giles
00:21:56that we're with you mate
00:21:57after a difficult week
00:21:58and we're backing you all the way
00:22:00good shot
00:22:09beautiful cover drive
00:22:10that's close
00:22:21that's close
00:22:22he's got to go to the third umpire for that
00:22:25I think the direct hit very often
00:22:28ends up with a guy on his bike
00:22:31but let's have a look at it
00:22:33brilliant piece of fielding from Vaughan
00:22:35who picks up at mid on
00:22:36and recognises that it's Martin
00:22:38who's run into the danger end
00:22:39gone
00:22:45this is going to be out
00:22:48yes it is
00:22:49what a wicket
00:22:52just before lunch
00:22:53that is an unbelievable delivery
00:23:11Fred Truman would have stood there
00:23:14and said that were wasted on thee love
00:23:16that'll do for Michael Clarke
00:23:23he gets enough on that
00:23:24a strong feature of his game
00:23:26is the full face
00:23:27and back down
00:23:27past the bowler
00:23:28he's got a half century
00:23:41he's also got a few bruises out there
00:23:43but it's been a good gutsy knock
00:23:45and a very valuable one for the Australians
00:23:48and a very valuable one for the Australians
00:23:48and a very valuable one for the Australians
00:23:52Which lovely shot in Michael Park out of the textbook
00:24:11He's got him
00:24:21That's a top class bit of slow bowling from Ashley Giles
00:24:25Change of pace does the trick
00:24:28One got Strauss like that yesterday
00:24:30Ball bowled much quicker
00:24:32Now Giles has got Clark
00:24:35Yeah it was a quicker ball
00:24:37Much flatter from Giles
00:24:39And a fairly indeterminate stroke from Clark
00:24:42Who'd be disappointed with himself
00:24:43That's the quicker delivery
00:24:45Bowled off the forefinger by Giles
00:24:48And just a fairly indeterminate flirt outside off stump from Clark
00:24:52Good catch Geraint Jones
00:24:53That will have done his confidence
00:24:55A bit of good Michael Clark
00:24:5640, 194 for full
00:25:09Difficult batting
00:25:12Because Flintoff is hitting the deck
00:25:14He's got the length right on this occasion
00:25:16But it's been the Irish swing
00:25:17That has brought about a miscalculation from Simon Kadish
00:25:22Now then
00:25:24Very much game on
00:25:26208 for five
00:25:27Change in tactic from Andrew Flintoff
00:25:35He's been bowling around the wicket
00:25:37To Kadish
00:25:40Came back over
00:25:41Picked him up court behind
00:25:42Off the mark
00:25:44Off the mark
00:25:48Off the mark
00:25:49Crunch
00:25:54Well there's that move again away from the left hander
00:25:57Oh there's that move again away from the left hander
00:26:10Good quick bowling
00:26:18Oh he's got him
00:26:19What a swinger
00:26:21Fast and full
00:26:23Simon Jones deserves that
00:26:28He's bought a lot of good nuts today
00:26:31That haven't had reward
00:26:33Now he's bowled one that has
00:26:35It completely deceiving
00:26:37Justin Langer on this occasion
00:26:39He hasn't been deceived too much today
00:26:41He's been very watchful
00:26:44But it was
00:26:45It was an effort ball
00:26:46It was full
00:26:46Right up there in the block hole
00:26:48And just swinging back
00:26:50Did it swing back too much?
00:26:52Well Hawkeye suggests
00:26:54It was flicking legs
00:26:55Stop
00:26:55There's no doubt
00:26:57That live
00:26:58It looked very very close
00:27:00262 for six
00:27:02Racking stroke through extra cover
00:27:12And Jones is livid with himself
00:27:13I don't think he needs to be
00:27:15It's the beauty of the game
00:27:16So he's bowling for that stroke
00:27:20That might well edge the ball
00:27:22It won't always cream it through extra cover
00:27:24Warnie is gone
00:27:28It's a nice little battle for Ashley Giles to win
00:27:36And a rather embarrassing one for Warn to lose
00:27:41Well it wasn't much of a battle for Giles was it?
00:27:43It was an absolute gift
00:27:45And right from the outset
00:27:47Shane Warn had been lewd in some outrageous attempts at shots
00:27:52And again he's got this premeditator
00:27:55He's coming down no matter what
00:27:56The ball really doesn't turn
00:27:58It's as simple as a swing and a miss
00:28:01That's three for Giles now
00:28:04A great effort for him
00:28:05Warn gone for eight
00:28:06273 for seven
00:28:08In Australia
00:28:08Put it down
00:28:14It did get there
00:28:16It was a very difficult chance
00:28:18It went quickly
00:28:19And a long way to Flintoff's right
00:28:22And a neat catch
00:28:32Good swinger again from Simon Jones
00:28:36That ball moved away from the right hand of Lee
00:28:39And it was neatly caught by Flintoff
00:28:43What a good performance from Jones
00:28:48He's got this whole ball moving with reverse swing
00:28:52Difficult to do it
00:28:54And make it go away from the right handers
00:28:56But Jones has taught himself in 12 months how to do it
00:28:59Brett Lee goes for six to an absolute beauty
00:29:02282 for eight
00:29:03Right, he needs a Yorker right up there in the block hole
00:29:08Like that
00:29:11Yes, look at the finger
00:29:13The slow death from Rudy Kutzen
00:29:16And maybe Tony Grape should get out there
00:29:22And help Michael Horn with his job
00:29:23Yeah, it was a good delivery
00:29:26That's for sure
00:29:27I think it might have been slipping down the leg side though
00:29:29It swung back a long way
00:29:31Good way to bowl though
00:29:34ULSP seven
00:29:35A gutsy seven
00:29:36Australia 308 for nine
00:29:38Oh yes, that's that
00:29:46Andrew Flintoff is very special
00:29:49A big hearted cricketer
00:29:52With a big, big performance for England today
00:29:55Two in two
00:29:57It leaves him on a hat-trick
00:29:58When he first bowls next time round
00:30:00There's the talisman
00:30:06What a strong character both with bat and ball
00:30:09Andrew Flintoff has proven to be
00:30:11No hundreds yet in this series
00:30:12Plenty of people getting going
00:30:14But getting out
00:30:15308 with Gilchrist unbeaten
00:30:18Australia won't be pleased with themselves
00:30:20The bowlers all did their bit
00:30:22Giles was outstanding as was Flintoff
00:30:24And good support
00:30:25From Jones and Hoggard
00:30:27A quietish day for Stephen Harbison
00:30:29The lead is 99 for England
00:30:31There's 35 minutes of play left in the evening
00:30:35The question is
00:30:36Can these two make it through to the night?
00:30:44And Droskothic thumbs him through extra cover
00:30:46What a fabulous way to get going
00:30:50Here's Bretland
00:30:55There goes Bretland
00:30:59That is one shot
00:31:06From Droskothic
00:31:08And bowed him!
00:31:16How about that?
00:31:18Absolutely brilliant
00:31:20From Shane Warne
00:31:21Magnificent piece of bowling
00:31:24From Warne
00:31:25He's made a few batsmen
00:31:28Look a bit foolish over the years
00:31:30And there's no disgrace
00:31:31In Andrew Strauss looking a bit foolish
00:31:33But he did here
00:31:34And we thought he'd bowled
00:31:42The most magical ball of them all
00:31:43A dozen years ago
00:31:45Mind you
00:31:47There was nothing for England
00:31:47To get uptight about
00:31:49They led by 124
00:31:50Which was an immensely strong position
00:31:52And their own spinner
00:31:53Had played a part in it
00:31:54That was a terrific performance
00:31:57Ashley
00:31:57By both you and the team
00:31:58Do you see it as one in the eye
00:32:00For the critics?
00:32:01Not really
00:32:01No
00:32:01I've had a tricky week
00:32:03To say the least
00:32:04But two days before this game
00:32:06I was just trying to concentrate on my cricket
00:32:08And I think I've done that pretty well
00:32:10And things have gone well over the last two days
00:32:12Anything you wish you hadn't said in the last week?
00:32:15No
00:32:16But I've done all my talking now
00:32:19And I've got to concentrate on my game
00:32:21Because it's tough enough playing against these guys
00:32:23Without all that stress as well
00:32:25So I've concentrated on my bowling
00:32:27And there's still a long way to go in this game
00:32:29And hopefully I've got a big part to play
00:32:30I felt that today
00:32:32England played the sort of cricket
00:32:33That's been successful against other countries
00:32:35For the first time
00:32:36They pulled it off against Australia
00:32:37That's right, yeah
00:32:38I think as a unit
00:32:40We've got our plans right
00:32:41And we bowled good areas
00:32:42When the time came
00:32:44We hid the ball a bit
00:32:46If you like
00:32:46And that worked
00:32:47Freddie bowled
00:32:49Bowled magnificently as well
00:32:50I thought
00:32:50And Simon Jones bowled a great spell as well
00:32:53A buoyant dressing room
00:32:54Looking to push on tomorrow then
00:32:55Of course
00:32:57You know
00:32:571.25 lead for one
00:32:59Is a great start
00:33:00But it's going to be tricky
00:33:01The wickets turn in for Warnie
00:33:03And so he hasn't got that many wickets
00:33:05For no reason
00:33:06So we're going to have to come up
00:33:08With good game plans against him
00:33:09And try and get a decent lead
00:33:10We're going to have to come up
00:33:16With good game plans against him
00:33:17And try and get a decent lead
00:33:18That was a wide one
00:33:34He's found the outside edge
00:33:36Nothing
00:33:38Christophic will be pleased about there
00:33:41It was a ball bowled
00:33:43At 88 miles an hour
00:33:45Just normal speed
00:33:46And he's either got an edge
00:33:50Or even somewhere
00:33:51Towards the bottom of the baton
00:33:52Well it's a nothing
00:33:53Sort of dismissal
00:33:54This wide ball
00:33:56No footwork
00:33:56Nothing
00:33:57And he just had a little dabble at it
00:33:58He couldn't resist it
00:33:59Oh dear
00:34:02That's a gift for Australia
00:34:0527 for 2
00:34:10What a breakthrough
00:34:23Well Warnie's looked as though
00:34:26That has kept low
00:34:27But
00:34:27It just seemed to me
00:34:30That Lee beat him for pace
00:34:31The quickest ball he's bowled this morning
00:34:33It's just touching 90 miles an hour
00:34:36And he was through the defence
00:34:3929 for 3
00:34:43Well I said at Lord's
00:34:45He doesn't get forward enough
00:34:46He stays on the crease
00:34:48So they're shuffling back there
00:34:49And the bat comes slightly across the line
00:34:53It did at Lord's
00:34:54It looks as if it's going straight down the line
00:34:57But it doesn't
00:34:58It starts to come across
00:34:59And when he's missed the ball
00:35:00Then he straightens it up
00:35:02That's a technical fault
00:35:03He should be working on
00:35:05That's a big big wicket for Australia
00:35:0829 for 3
00:35:09That's out
00:35:16Well it was so simple Rich
00:35:18That couldn't believe it
00:35:20Neatly taken
00:35:23The night watchman really has got to stay out there
00:35:29The following morning
00:35:30Otherwise the scorecard
00:35:32Takes a slightly frenetic appearance
00:35:35It's 31 for 4 now
00:35:37This is catching practice
00:35:40Look
00:35:40It just opens the face
00:35:41And shoves it out there
00:35:43It's just like we have on the morning
00:35:44Catching practice
00:35:45You'll feel there's in a circle
00:35:47And just slide it off the face of the bat
00:35:49As you open it
00:35:50Somebody throws the ball
00:35:51You open the face
00:35:52And you're quite right there
00:35:54And it is 31 for 4
00:35:56Nice to score these balls this morning
00:36:0591 miles an hour
00:36:07Loud a shout is made
00:36:08And this is it
00:36:14Oh dear
00:36:19Definite sound
00:36:24And I think it was the
00:36:26The extra protection on his right glove
00:36:29Well he's gone for that one
00:36:37And it has gone miles
00:36:39It's into the stands
00:36:41Peterson
00:36:42He likes to get on with it
00:36:43And again
00:36:51This is a great display
00:36:55From Kevin Peterson
00:36:56It's not just the fact that he's hit the 2-6
00:36:59It's the decision making
00:37:01And the ability
00:37:02To have a go
00:37:03And that's fought
00:37:09No third man
00:37:10Well played
00:37:15Very important when you're under the cosh
00:37:18From Shane Warne
00:37:19That any loose delivery you get
00:37:21You take full advantage of
00:37:23And Ian Bell did well here
00:37:24What's that hit
00:37:33Giving it out
00:37:35Now Peterson doesn't look happy
00:37:37Peterson will reckon it hit his chest
00:37:42Or some other part of his body
00:37:43I wonder
00:37:44But Tony you thought it was out immediately
00:37:47Well it looked to me as a bit the glove
00:37:50But he's shaking his head
00:37:51I don't like the fact that he's looking up at the screen
00:37:54It means he's a little unsure as well
00:37:56Now
00:37:58Let's have a look
00:37:59Seems to miss the glove
00:38:01Then clip the thigh
00:38:03Before going up into the chest
00:38:04And hitting the elbow
00:38:05And dropping down to the ground
00:38:07And Gilchrist
00:38:09Sharp as you like
00:38:10Thinks he's got his man
00:38:11Peterson 20
00:38:13He's gone
00:38:1472 for 5
00:38:15What's happened here
00:38:20Out
00:38:21Just a little thin one
00:38:22What a bowler
00:38:25A fantastic bowler
00:38:29Ripping spin
00:38:34The bell didn't do too much wrong
00:38:35Beautifully taken as well
00:38:38Boy he's very good at those gloves
00:38:41There's the little edge
00:38:43You can see the little rattle of the bat there
00:38:45Nicely taken
00:38:46And boy
00:38:47This now is trouble
00:38:50For England
00:38:50Bell 21
00:38:5275 for 6
00:38:53Boy this is trouble
00:38:57Says Tony Gregg
00:38:58And he's right
00:38:5975 for 6
00:39:01At this stage
00:39:02Not what anybody expected
00:39:04Because Brett Lee
00:39:05Did the damage
00:39:06He's 3 for 32 now
00:39:07He came roaring in at England
00:39:09All the focus had been on Shane Warne
00:39:11It wasn't Warne
00:39:11That did the initial damage
00:39:13Brett Lee quite brilliant
00:39:15And he's entitled to celebrate
00:39:1718 months in waiting
00:39:18To get back into the side
00:39:19Warne and Gilchrist
00:39:20Will be doing that together
00:39:21For ages
00:39:22The lead now for England
00:39:23174
00:39:24It did mean of course
00:39:26That Andrew Flintoff
00:39:27Came to the crease
00:39:28And there was a worry
00:39:29For all English supporters
00:39:30And for Flintoff himself
00:39:32When watch him
00:39:33Watch him with that left shoulder
00:39:35He thought he'd popped it out
00:39:37He hadn't
00:39:38Said the physio
00:39:39You're okay
00:39:39He didn't look okay
00:39:42Every stroke he played hurt
00:39:45He actually began to bat
00:39:46In a more measured fashion
00:39:47Because of it
00:39:48Then Geraint Jones
00:39:49Had a bit of luck
00:39:50Gillespie should have clung on
00:39:52He didn't
00:39:53At the same time
00:39:55Flintoff still nursing the injury
00:39:56Was able just occasionally
00:39:58To bunt the thing to the boundary
00:40:00It was an extraordinary bit of nudge
00:40:02At lunchtime he had an injection
00:40:04That took away the pain
00:40:06Lunch came and went
00:40:0795 for 6 the score
00:40:09The lead 194
00:40:10Here we go again
00:40:17And steered away to the boundary
00:40:18That was well played
00:40:19He was right over the top
00:40:21Of that one
00:40:22Oh that's out
00:40:27Yes it's off the glove
00:40:28Boy
00:40:29That stood up
00:40:30That really did surprise him
00:40:32He's having a look down
00:40:33At the pitch
00:40:34I've got to say
00:40:35That we haven't seen many
00:40:36Bounce like that
00:40:37That went from nowhere
00:40:38Well that's the most difficult ball
00:40:41That anybody's had
00:40:42Today to play
00:40:43I mean
00:40:44I'm not sure he'll do
00:40:45Quite a lot about that
00:40:46Yes maybe
00:40:47He's trying to play it though
00:40:48Tony
00:40:48I don't think it's too high
00:40:49To get his hands out of the way
00:40:51He's got to play it
00:40:52He could say well
00:40:53Could he have played it a little bit better
00:40:55But it surprised him
00:40:56It got up from nowhere
00:40:57And that is definitely
00:40:59A brutal ball to get
00:41:00Great for Australia
00:41:01Not good for England
00:41:02Or Jones
00:41:041-0-1 for seven
00:41:05Oh he's had a go
00:41:10That one
00:41:11Got a lot of edge on it
00:41:12And it's gone to third man
00:41:13For four
00:41:14Oh inside edge
00:41:18And that'll go for four
00:41:19That's a good shot
00:41:20There are two men out there
00:41:31To cut off that stroke
00:41:32And then
00:41:34Limp off
00:41:35And it looks as though
00:41:37His shoulders loosening up a bit
00:41:38Made him play at that
00:41:52Instead of the ball being down
00:41:55Round about the line of leg stump
00:41:57He has got it about middle and leg
00:42:01And produced the defensive stroke
00:42:03From Giles
00:42:04And Hayden
00:42:05Has taken the catch
00:42:07Got his revenge
00:42:08Shane Warne
00:42:09Ashley Giles of course
00:42:10Did for Warne
00:42:11When Warne was batting
00:42:13And now Warne has got this revenge
00:42:14A beautifully pitched leg break
00:42:16Lots of side spin
00:42:17Giles prodding forward
00:42:19And succeeding in only edging
00:42:22A simple catch through to
00:42:24Matthew Hayden
00:42:25He's toiled long and hard
00:42:26Shane Warne
00:42:26But deserved
00:42:27His fourth wicket
00:42:29Four for thirty now
00:42:30For Shane Warne
00:42:31Ashley Giles gone for eight
00:42:32One thirty one for eight
00:42:33Slider from Warne
00:42:49Very straight
00:42:50And hit the pad
00:42:52Did it hit the bat
00:42:53Ricky Ponting took an excellent catch
00:42:57At silly point
00:42:58And
00:42:59Fancy that's how Rudy Kirkson
00:43:01Gave Stephen Harmison out
00:43:04He seemed to prod it
00:43:05Back pad straight
00:43:06To Ricky Ponting
00:43:07It was a good sharp catch
00:43:12And five wickets for Shane Warne
00:43:14He's got away from Simon James
00:43:22James has done it
00:43:25He's got away for four
00:43:26And that allows Flintoff
00:43:27To keep the strike
00:43:28So that's proper cricket
00:43:29From Simon James
00:43:30That has gone many a mile
00:43:37On his responsibility on Kaspervic here
00:43:47Oh biggie
00:43:50Straight into the crowd
00:43:5450 for Klindov
00:43:57What a brave innings
00:43:59What a valuable one
00:44:01And it's 247 ahead now.
00:44:11It's a heck of a good shot.
00:44:14And listen to the response of the crowd.
00:44:16I mean, this is...
00:44:17This is sporting theatre at its most intense and most gripping.
00:44:24What a shot.
00:44:27Oh, hello! Massive!
00:44:31Massive!
00:44:35One of the most magnificent strikes you'll ever see.
00:44:39Straight over the top of the stun.
00:44:43What a fantastic strike.
00:44:47Beautiful straight, free-flowing butt.
00:44:57Oh, well, now!
00:45:00It's six more!
00:45:01We're witnessing something, something fantastic.
00:45:10Something that everybody can identify with.
00:45:14Just thrilling sport.
00:45:16What's happened to that?
00:45:24Is that a missing leg stump?
00:45:33Missing?
00:45:33It's missing leg.
00:45:35It's missing off and it's knocking middle out about halfway up.
00:45:38That's the end of that.
00:45:45Shane Warne has eventually got his man.
00:45:48So Warne ends up with six for 46, and he's now on 599 wickets.
00:46:00A little clap there for Flintoff from Warne, this is the one, you try to smash that into the stands as well, hit middle and leg, and the end of a very good knock from Flintoff, 73 of 86, that's very well played.
00:46:15Magical stuff from Andrew Flintoff, evoking memories of 1981 when Ian Botham got the whole country on his side to beat Australia, who really did play extraordinarily well.
00:46:26Against the master, 599, as Tony Gregg said, he said goodbye to Edgbaston with six for 46.
00:46:34A good performance, too, from Brett Lee.
00:46:37The third afternoon in Birmingham, and already the final innings of the match begins.
00:46:42Australia need 282 to win the game.
00:46:55Hayden off the mark, that'll be a relief to him.
00:47:02Really good stroke.
00:47:04It was a pretty good bouncer from Harvison, quick and on target.
00:47:08And Langer was very quickly into position.
00:47:16And Langer looks in, terrific touch.
00:47:18He unfurled a lovely half pull, half hook off Harvison in the previous over.
00:47:24And this one was superbly played.
00:47:29Go runs down to third man.
00:47:31It's a super shot.
00:47:39The use of the feet did it, and then a lovely free swing at the back.
00:47:42It's a beautiful off-drive.
00:47:51Lovely footwork, and then a full committed drive down the ground.
00:47:56Brilliant play from Langer.
00:47:57And so, after an excellent start by the Australians, they were 47 for no wicket, Michael Vaughan called on Freddie Flintoff in the 13th over.
00:48:06He was on a hat-trick, of course, after his first innings effort.
00:48:08He didn't get it.
00:48:09But...
00:48:10Goal!
00:48:14He's got him!
00:48:15Freddie Flintoff!
00:48:17The man!
00:48:18Three wickets in four balls.
00:48:25But the break-through.
00:48:27That'll get him going.
00:48:28That has got him going, and it also means that a right-hander will come in now.
00:48:35We'll have Ricky Pondon to skip it coming in at number three.
00:48:38Flintoff has done it.
00:48:39He batted magnificently.
00:48:41And now, bad shoulder and all.
00:48:44He's got the leg-cutter.
00:48:46And he's got the inside edge of the batter.
00:48:49Jumped a little bit on Langer, and then down onto the stumps.
00:48:52Beautifully bowled.
00:48:53And 47 for one.
00:48:55We're in the 13th over.
00:48:58Ricky Pondon on strike.
00:49:02Oh, that's so close!
00:49:05And it's not out!
00:49:13Oh, I say.
00:49:16Flintoff has changed the whole feeling of the occasion.
00:49:24He's gone outside the line again.
00:49:29Oh, that won't be a problem as far as Flintoff's concerned.
00:49:37Beauty!
00:49:38Yes!
00:49:40Magnificent cricket from this man.
00:49:43Really.
00:49:46Really, he's set the place alight.
00:49:49He's not the game on its head.
00:49:53Fantastic.
00:49:57Big leg-cutter.
00:49:58Big outside edge.
00:50:00And a fast-nick.
00:50:04What an over.
00:50:06And perfect.
00:50:08Ponding no score.
00:50:09And it's 48 for two.
00:50:20That's very well played.
00:50:22That's the elegant side of Martin.
00:50:23Oh, there we go.
00:50:30That's the one.
00:50:32Just a little tentative there.
00:50:33The ball racing away off the edge for four.
00:50:36Oh, that's going for four.
00:50:47It's a classic straight drive.
00:50:49It's the best of Hayden.
00:50:50Oh, he's caught it.
00:50:55Brilliant catch from Marcus Tresgothic.
00:50:59It seemed to hang in the air and so did Tresgothic.
00:51:02And as he rolled over, he clung on.
00:51:07What a breakthrough.
00:51:08I think it was the outswinger.
00:51:10And that was what caused Hayden's downfall.
00:51:15It's an excellent catch from Tresgothic.
00:51:16Just a solitary slip, so he had to go.
00:51:19And he went with two hands.
00:51:20It was a good decision.
00:51:22And it brings to an end the hard-working, grafting innings from Hayden.
00:51:26He's gone for 31.
00:51:278-2 for 3.
00:51:33That is some shot.
00:51:35Ha!
00:51:40Oh, lovely stroke.
00:51:44Really good positional play from Michael Clarke.
00:51:51Oh, dear me.
00:51:54Brilliant batting, this.
00:51:57Yeah.
00:51:59And that's why he's so good against spin.
00:52:06Oh, he's caught it as well.
00:52:08Hoggard strikes immediately.
00:52:12Bell is the man at mid-wicket who clings on.
00:52:16Martin is the man who has to walk back to the pavilion.
00:52:20Oh, dear.
00:52:21There's a sting at every turn.
00:52:25Just looked such a lazy stroke from Damian Martin.
00:52:27He'd looked with absolutely no trouble at all in his innings so far.
00:52:31But this seemed lazy, a lazy flick.
00:52:35He's going for 28.
00:52:361-0-7 for 4.
00:52:40Well, that's well played.
00:52:42Oh, what a shot to get off the mark with.
00:52:49Oh, he's got that away for 4-2.
00:52:51Oh, he's got that away for 4-2.
00:52:51Oh, very good shot.
00:53:05He used his feet beautifully.
00:53:06Got him.
00:53:15Got him.
00:53:15Beautifully taken.
00:53:16A little fumble there, but what a wicket.
00:53:19Well, Giles has done his stuff.
00:53:21He's come to the party.
00:53:23He's found the outside edge.
00:53:24And just for a second, I thought it was going to pop out, but it didn't.
00:53:30It was nicely taken.
00:53:33Didn't spin as much as Kaddij anticipated and juggled catch.
00:53:38134 for 5.
00:53:42Catch him.
00:53:43Yes.
00:53:44Gone.
00:53:47And so might be the match.
00:53:52That's huge wicket.
00:53:53I know they're all big wickets, but getting Gilchrist out cheaply is big.
00:53:58Look at it.
00:53:59You see, it just turns a bit.
00:54:01Skews from the bar to miss hit.
00:54:03And it's a simple catch.
00:54:06Ready Flynn for.
00:54:07Pressure's got to him there, you know, to attack.
00:54:10136 for 6.
00:54:15Oh, yes.
00:54:17That has got to be out.
00:54:21Fast delivery.
00:54:2290 miles an hour.
00:54:25Well, that was an absolute beauty, wasn't it?
00:54:28Right in the block all quick.
00:54:31Well, he's a very aggressive bowler, is Andrew Flintoff.
00:54:35You're a tail ender.
00:54:36There's no fun in seeing him come running in.
00:54:38It's right up there.
00:54:39Well, it's a touch and goal, but it might just have it like stumped that.
00:54:45137 for 7.
00:54:46Six, what a shot.
00:55:04There he goes again.
00:55:05Another fabulous stroke from Shane Warne.
00:55:11Good cricket by everybody.
00:55:15Harmison thought he had his man if he'd hit.
00:55:17This will be worth another look.
00:55:19Oh, way.
00:55:22No issue.
00:55:22No issue.
00:55:28That's four.
00:55:32Thing is flying to the boundary.
00:55:34Down to 1.13 to win now for Australia.
00:55:39Three wickets to take for England.
00:55:41Oh, Stephen Harmison with a slower ball, one of the great balls.
00:55:56Given the moment, given the batsman and given the match, that is a staggering gamble that's
00:56:02played off for Harmison.
00:56:03He bowled it perfectly.
00:56:05Just watch this.
00:56:09Just watch him.
00:56:10He changes his grip very late.
00:56:11Bowls it like a little leg cutter.
00:56:14And he's gone over the top of it.
00:56:16That is superb bowling.
00:56:24Heroes everywhere you look down Heroes Way in Birmingham.
00:56:27Harmison had bowled the ball of the day, but Flintoff had indisputably bowled the over
00:56:31of the day.
00:56:33107 of Australia to win it.
00:56:34Just two wickets for England to take.
00:56:47Sunday morning, dawned bright with hope.
00:56:50England wonderfully placed.
00:56:51Brett Lee came scampering out.
00:56:54But Warn, the competitor, was on strike.
00:56:56Let's go on wide of the man at deep third man.
00:57:09Well, Ransom, that's four.
00:57:11That's a good shot from Brett Lee.
00:57:12Flintoff has assisted Warn to bring up the 200 for Australia.
00:57:39That now is down to 80 to win.
00:57:47That's quite a useful stroke from Brett Lee.
00:57:50Now, this is the moment where Michael Vaughan has a bit of thinking to do.
00:57:57Oh, got him.
00:58:05Well done, Flintoff.
00:58:09Fast, full, straight, doing the business against Shane Warne.
00:58:13Freddie's pleased.
00:58:14Freddie's pleased.
00:58:16You should see how 22,000 Brummies feel about it.
00:58:27Warne shreds on his stumps.
00:58:30He was not bowled out.
00:58:32It's a super innings by Warne.
00:58:35He really gave Australia hope.
00:58:3742 he made.
00:58:38He's had a fantastic match.
00:58:40He leaves with his head down.
00:58:42He feels distraught.
00:58:44But he's given Australia everything in this game.
00:58:4642.
00:58:47Shane Warne.
00:58:48220 for nine, Australia.
00:58:53Oh, that's very quick.
00:58:55Oh, that's a bit of venom in it.
00:58:59Around about 90 mph or just under 90.
00:59:09What's that?
00:59:10Ted, no, Valdon's not interested.
00:59:13Well, what about that?
00:59:25Outside the line of off-stump, was he?
00:59:28And the single is gained.
00:59:35Only just outside of off-stump.
00:59:37Is he?
00:59:38Only just.
00:59:39Yeah, I think I'd have given it no doubt.
00:59:43And Kasparovic's answer is to clip it away for four.
00:59:53Well, that's clever thinking.
00:59:55What's more, now it's below 50 for Australia.
00:59:5746 to get.
01:00:02And Lee goes big.
01:00:05And gets four.
01:00:0842 to win.
01:00:09Well, I've got to give him credit for this shot.
01:00:11This is a super hit.
01:00:13Now, Kasparovic goes over the top.
01:00:25That's a wonderful stroke.
01:00:27Well.
01:00:29Superbly well played.
01:00:34And that'll raise away for 4-2.
01:00:36My goodness me, 13 from the over.
01:00:43What a performance this is from the Australians.
01:00:50Kasparovic is timing it well.
01:00:51He wants to come back for two, which he does, and he makes.
01:00:55Good judgment.
01:00:56He ran the first run quickly.
01:00:5830 to win.
01:00:59This has been a brilliant rear guard from Australia this morning.
01:01:05So much so that it's now a very realistic chance of winning the game.
01:01:082.52 for 9.
01:01:10Oh, he's chipped it in the air.
01:01:15It's gone over the infield.
01:01:16One go for four.
01:01:19Oh, it's a full toss.
01:01:27Four.
01:01:28Way down the leg side.
01:01:30It beats the keeper and into the rope down there for 4.
01:01:3620 to win.
01:01:40Oh, he's had a big go at that one outside off stump.
01:01:44Now, if you're going to have a go outside the off stump, that's the way to do it.
01:01:47Because the top edge there will end up in the pavilion.
01:01:52Oh, he's hit him hard.
01:01:53Yep.
01:01:57He smashed Brett Lee on the arm, I think it was.
01:02:02And he's taking time out.
01:02:09Oh, it's actually glove.
01:02:10It's right on his left hand.
01:02:14That was a superb delivery.
01:02:17There's nothing much a tail ender, even a batsman.
01:02:20This was straight in at the ribcage.
01:02:22Australia still 20 runs for victory.
01:02:26And England, this elusive wicket.
01:02:30Off the thigh pad.
01:02:32He's going to be taking a few bruises away.
01:02:36So he retains the strike.
01:02:41Oh, inside edge for four.
01:02:43Oh, that's not what England wanted.
01:02:49That takes it down to 15 now.
01:02:53Oh, boy.
01:02:54They're the fanatics.
01:02:58They're going berserk.
01:03:00England supporters head in their hands.
01:03:03It's 15 to win for Australia.
01:03:06Nothing convincing about this shot from Lee.
01:03:08But how often do you see at this stage of a match a little inside edge and four runs?
01:03:13Unbelievable stuff here at Edgbaston.
01:03:21Yeah.
01:03:25Boy, he steered that on the way.
01:03:26Oh, and there's a dive down at third man.
01:03:29I reckon he got a hand on that.
01:03:31Jones came in.
01:03:32It would have been a great catch.
01:03:33It's very difficult if you're driving forward in the outfield.
01:03:38I think he got his hands to it, though.
01:03:41He did just, but he hesitated.
01:03:43Watching him as the ball came to him.
01:03:44He didn't fly in at it.
01:03:45He just paused there, and then he dives.
01:03:48Got to him well and truly.
01:03:49The pressure on the fieldsman.
01:03:51It's not just the batters and the bowlers.
01:03:53No ball called, and four.
01:04:03He's gone for the Yorker.
01:04:05No ball.
01:04:05He bowled it extra fast.
01:04:09And it's gone screaming away fine down to the fine leg boundary.
01:04:15So four and one for the no ball.
01:04:18Nine runs to win.
01:04:20One wicket in hand.
01:04:23Yes.
01:04:25Comfortable single.
01:04:31Yes.
01:04:32Well played by Kasperovic.
01:04:35Away on the offside for a single.
01:04:43Inside edge.
01:04:44Running away on the onside.
01:04:45Another one.
01:04:51Yes.
01:04:53I think they'll be quite happy with singles.
01:04:59Oh, and a Yorker.
01:05:01An attempt at a Yorker there.
01:05:02And it was very well kept out.
01:05:04And he's done it well.
01:05:11It's hit him.
01:05:13Knocked his bat out of his hand.
01:05:15He's called for the one.
01:05:16Kasperovic has responded.
01:05:17It's 2.78 for nine.
01:05:18Who had to playoff.
01:05:20Big pass.
01:05:20And it was very well.
01:05:24Full toss outside.
01:05:25I've done.
01:05:26Meant to be the Yorker.
01:05:27The idea was okay.
01:05:29Jones, Baden, Kasparovic, the man to go
01:05:46and Harmson has done a despair on the faces of the batsmen
01:05:52and joy for every England player on the field
01:05:57a victory by two runs
01:06:04as England Harmson has got the wicket
01:06:08and Jones has somehow managed to scramble across
01:06:15and dive and get both hands around the ball
01:06:18to end one of the most thrilling games of cricket there's ever been
01:06:27the scene summed it all up a sensational cricket match with a sensational finish
01:06:40the scene summed it all up a sensational cricket match with a sensational finish
01:06:56and with its sensational sportsmanship
01:06:58Klintov went straight to Brett Lee who was unbeaten with 43 in that Australian card
01:07:03Klintov himself 4 for 79
01:07:042 for 62 Harmson, 1 for 26 Horrad, 2 for 68 Giles, 1 for 23 Jones
01:07:11they all did their bit
01:07:13the scenes at Edgbaston etched into history
01:07:17and this winning moment will be played over and over again
01:07:22Geraint Jones, the catcher
01:07:23Michael Kasparovic, the man who went
01:07:25Steve Harmson, the bowler
01:07:26England won it by two
01:07:28here with his thoughts
01:07:29is Ricky Ponte
01:07:30must be hard to bear to get so close
01:07:36oh it is but at the end of the day
01:07:39we got very very close
01:07:41but full credit to England
01:07:42they played very well through this test match
01:07:44a couple of our tail enders out there this morning
01:07:46just absolutely sensational
01:07:47I mean Shane Warne's game
01:07:4810 wickets and the runs he got in the second innings was outstanding
01:07:51to have Brett Lee and Michael Kasparovic standing up against that bowling attack
01:07:56at the end of the day
01:07:57an almost pinch of test match is full credit to those guys
01:08:01it says a lot about the character of our team
01:08:02to fight back the way we did this morning
01:08:03so we can take a lot out of this game
01:08:05and although we've lost
01:08:07it's been a great test match
01:08:08one of the best that I've ever played in
01:08:09and hopefully the third one will be exactly the same
01:08:12yeah did you believe this morning when you got up
01:08:14that you could A get so close
01:08:16and B could you win the match
01:08:17well we're always giving ourselves a chance
01:08:19I mean Shane's a good player
01:08:21a good batsman
01:08:21and he's shown that through the county season already this year
01:08:24but we gave ourselves a glimmer of hope
01:08:26but it was a lot of hard work and a lot of discipline
01:08:29had to go in it and into it
01:08:31and Brett and Michael showed that
01:08:33you know today
01:08:33they both took a few on the body
01:08:35but they stood up to it
01:08:36and unfortunately we just weren't quite good enough
01:08:38yeah in a way they summed up the spirit of Australian cricket this morning
01:08:42yeah I mean that's what
01:08:43that's what you hope your whole team's all about
01:08:45I'm sure England would have done exactly the same
01:08:48if they're in that situation
01:08:49so you know you're out there trying to give your best
01:08:51all of the time
01:08:52that's certainly what all our players did this game
01:08:53just go back to the beginning of the game
01:08:55not a lot went right for you at the start
01:08:57obviously the injury to Glenn McGrath
01:08:59how much did you miss him in this match
01:09:00oh you're always going to miss someone of that
01:09:02that skill and that much experience
01:09:04I mean especially after the way he bowled in the first test match
01:09:06but as I said
01:09:07Kasper had bowled extremely well in the game down at Worcester
01:09:10and I had no worries about him coming into the side
01:09:12so
01:09:12and actually we probably needed his batting
01:09:14might have been a different story
01:09:15if it was Glenn's batting out there late this afternoon
01:09:16but
01:09:16look we'll just keep an eye on Glenn
01:09:19and see how he comes up
01:09:20he's actually moving around a lot better now
01:09:21so we'll keep our fingers crossed with him
01:09:23and you won the toss and elected to bowl
01:09:25is that a decision that you regret now?
01:09:28there's three runs in the game
01:09:30and you know we probably feel that
01:09:33we could have won the game at the end of the day
01:09:35if we had to bowled a bit better
01:09:36in our first innings
01:09:38and if we certainly had to batter better in our first innings
01:09:40then the result might have been different
01:09:41I think
01:09:41you know on that wicket
01:09:42we had to score more than 300 in our first batting innings
01:09:44and that's probably been the difference in the game
01:09:46gracious in defeat
01:09:48and justifiably proud of his men
01:09:50in a minute we'll talk to Michael Vaughan
01:09:52but first it has to be
01:09:53the big fella
01:09:54when Michael Clark went late last evening
01:09:58you couldn't have imagined
01:09:59it'd be so close this morning
01:10:01not chasing what they were this morning
01:10:03we knew they had good players
01:10:04but it was open
01:10:05it didn't go quite down to where it went
01:10:06I thought Brett
01:10:07Brett Lee was outstanding
01:10:08he bowled his heart out
01:10:09and then
01:10:09so by the way he did this morning was great
01:10:11and
01:10:12obviously over the moon
01:10:13when Army
01:10:14got Kaspivic out at the end
01:10:15didn't have to bow another over
01:10:16yeah just a quick word about your injury
01:10:19obviously
01:10:19shoulder problem yesterday
01:10:21but it didn't seem to inconvenience you
01:10:22too much this morning
01:10:24no I thought I popped out at one stage
01:10:26probably made a meal of it
01:10:27had a few pills and things
01:10:30it seems to be alright this morning
01:10:31a bit of stiffness
01:10:32a bit of treatment
01:10:32and I'm fine
01:10:33and yesterday must have been
01:10:34well must have been your best day in cricket
01:10:36yeah I think the whole test match
01:10:38has it's been a great spectacle
01:10:39I think
01:10:40everyone who's come to watch it
01:10:41has enjoyed it
01:10:42it's been a great advert for test cricket
01:10:44and
01:10:44pleased that we got over the line
01:10:46just by three runs at the end
01:10:47and
01:10:47it was a great effort by all our boys
01:10:49they do say that all rounders struggle
01:10:50to put both
01:10:51facets of the game together
01:10:53at any one time
01:10:54and
01:10:54that was the key to your great performance yesterday
01:10:57the fact that you got runs
01:10:58and wickets as well
01:10:59yeah it's difficult
01:11:01to get the two both going together
01:11:02probably at Old Trafford
01:11:03or probably just nipping me a couple of wickets
01:11:05and no runs
01:11:05but
01:11:06hopefully they can carry on doing that
01:11:07for a couple more weeks yet
01:11:09and the last wicket partnership with Simon Jones
01:11:11proved to be absolutely crucial
01:11:13yeah we came off
01:11:14and I mentioned we'd come back
01:11:15in our dressing room after that
01:11:16we thought we'd got enough
01:11:17and we just about did
01:11:19and do you believe you can go on
01:11:20and win the Ashes now
01:11:21we've got to
01:11:22I think they do
01:11:25we've taken a lot of heart from this
01:11:28but
01:11:28another game starts on Thursday
01:11:30at Old Trafford
01:11:30they're going to hit us hard
01:11:31they've shown the character
01:11:32they've got in their dressing room
01:11:33and we've got to match that
01:11:34and we've got to play some more good cricket
01:11:35we can't rest on this game
01:11:37we've got to come back strong again
01:11:38and one final word about the crowd
01:11:40you said yesterday
01:11:41it was like playing with 12 men
01:11:42here at Edgbaston
01:11:43yeah just look at them
01:11:44they've been great all test match
01:11:45they've got behind us
01:11:46he's rallied round
01:11:47and he's picked us up
01:11:48when we've been a bit down
01:11:49it's been a great effort
01:11:50from everyone here
01:11:51he is some cricketer
01:11:52Freddie isn't he
01:11:53yeah he is
01:11:54to be Australian
01:11:55you need team performances
01:11:57but you need individual brilliance
01:11:58and
01:11:59you know
01:12:00he had an outstanding game
01:12:01and really turned the game for us
01:12:02on a number of occasions in this game
01:12:04I suppose to a degree
01:12:05after Lourdes
01:12:07one or two people were saying
01:12:08oh well he's ok against the others
01:12:09but not against Australia
01:12:10well you always get that
01:12:12thrown at you
01:12:13when you play Australia
01:12:14if you don't perform
01:12:14but
01:12:15you know I always believe
01:12:16he's an outstanding performer
01:12:17and I think this game proved that
01:12:19what about your immediate reaction
01:12:21it's round about 45 minutes ago
01:12:23that you were jumping on Freddie
01:12:25and
01:12:25holding onto his jugs
01:12:28and obviously
01:12:29you're for it
01:12:30but I guess there's an element of relief
01:12:31given how tight it became
01:12:33yes certainly
01:12:33I think if we'd have gone 2-0 down
01:12:35the series would have been a
01:12:36a real hard ass for us to come back from
01:12:37but
01:12:38you know to get 1-1
01:12:39the momentum sways towards England
01:12:41the most important thing is that
01:12:42we really enjoy the moment today
01:12:44but
01:12:44come tomorrow and Tuesday
01:12:46and Wednesday
01:12:46we have to really focus our minds on performing
01:12:48to a similar standard at Old Trafford
01:12:50as we have done here
01:12:51it was a fantastic moment
01:12:53but in a way a lucky moment
01:12:54a catch down the leg side
01:12:55is one of those things
01:12:56that doesn't always go
01:12:57your way
01:12:58as Michael Kasparovic
01:13:00fended it off
01:13:00quite special for Geraint Jones
01:13:03because he's another one
01:13:04who's been under the cuff
01:13:04yeah I think so
01:13:06I think the only surprising thing
01:13:07towards the end of the game
01:13:08that Flintoff didn't take the final wicket
01:13:10or the final catch
01:13:10but great for Geraint to
01:13:12to obviously take that catch
01:13:13and great for the team
01:13:14to get the series back at 1-1
01:13:16do you have a sense now
01:13:18that there's a change of momentum
01:13:20I mean we've had a decade
01:13:21where all the tight finishes
01:13:23have gone Australia's way
01:13:24and all cricket's momentum
01:13:26and all the bits of luck
01:13:27have gone Australia's way
01:13:28yeah I think momentum's important
01:13:30but it can also be
01:13:31a burden as well
01:13:32you know Thursday's game
01:13:34is totally different
01:13:35to the game at Edgbaston
01:13:36it's just important
01:13:37that we start well
01:13:38as we did here
01:13:38and we put them under
01:13:39a lot of pressure
01:13:39we were positive
01:13:40you know we must start again
01:13:42positively at Old Trafford
01:13:43and make sure that we're
01:13:44trying to get on top
01:13:45of Australia early
01:13:46because if we do that
01:13:46you know we can keep
01:13:47pressurising them
01:13:49into situations
01:13:50and I think that's what
01:13:51we did here very very well
01:13:52is that every session
01:13:53I don't believe
01:13:54that Australia got on top of us
01:13:56it's important that we start
01:13:57exactly the same at Old Trafford
01:13:58on Thursday
01:13:59what about your own form
01:14:01Michael
01:14:01you've previously
01:14:02smacked Australians
01:14:03all round the park
01:14:04and you're not right now
01:14:05no I'm not
01:14:06but I thought I was playing
01:14:07nicely in the first innings
01:14:08and you know that's where
01:14:09I really get disappointed
01:14:10that I get the 24
01:14:12and get out when I'm playing nice
01:14:13the second innings
01:14:14you get a good ball early
01:14:15and you have to just accept that
01:14:16but in the first innings
01:14:17when you know that
01:14:18the wicket set is best
01:14:19you get the 24
01:14:20I should really catch
01:14:21and then got a big one
01:14:21in that first innings
01:14:22but you know
01:14:23I need some runs
01:14:24and hopefully it'll start
01:14:25on Thursday at Old Trafford
01:14:26now going back to
01:14:27first thing on Thursday morning
01:14:29I don't mind admitting
01:14:29that when the coin went up
01:14:32and Ricky Ponding called right
01:14:33I got it in my head
01:14:35that because I thought
01:14:36the winning captain
01:14:36had to bat first
01:14:37he'd said bat
01:14:38so when we were doing the teams
01:14:39I said Australia
01:14:40won the thousand batted
01:14:41were you taking the bat
01:14:42that he chose to bowl
01:14:43we were happy to
01:14:44to bat first
01:14:45we wanted to bat first
01:14:46because we have played
01:14:48at Edgbaston quite a lot
01:14:49recently
01:14:50and we always feel
01:14:50the wicket deteriorates
01:14:51and if you can get runs
01:14:52on the board
01:14:52we feel that you can put
01:14:54the opposition under pressure
01:14:55we just look at
01:14:56our own performances
01:14:56we can't control
01:14:58what Ricky was going to do
01:14:59we were happy to bat first
01:15:00we were pleased
01:15:01with the way we batted
01:15:02because we got 400
01:15:03on the board
01:15:04and it put Australia
01:15:04under pressure
01:15:05a lot of plaudits
01:15:06for your own captaincy
01:15:08from the guys
01:15:09in our commentary team
01:15:11and from some of the
01:15:12ex-captains
01:15:13writing about the game
01:15:14you've really thought
01:15:15hard about how best
01:15:16to deal with Australia
01:15:17haven't you?
01:15:17yeah we have as a team
01:15:19the captain does get
01:15:21a lot of the credit
01:15:22when it goes well
01:15:23but we do it as a team
01:15:24we have a think tank
01:15:25and it is down to me
01:15:26out in the middle
01:15:27to obviously direct that shit
01:15:29but a lot of the thought
01:15:30processes are done
01:15:31behind the game
01:15:32but once you're out
01:15:33in the middle
01:15:33instinct takes over
01:15:34and certain areas
01:15:35of the game
01:15:36that are just instinctive
01:15:37and you fancy having
01:15:38a fielder
01:15:38you fancy bowling
01:15:39there to a player
01:15:40you fancy changing
01:15:41the bowling from each end
01:15:42and a lot of it's
01:15:43looked to be honest
01:15:44but it went well this week
01:15:45I can't resist
01:15:46having a look at your eyes
01:15:47when you see the winning
01:15:48moment here
01:15:48because it really is
01:15:50very special to beat
01:15:51Australia and go
01:15:511-1 in the ashes
01:15:52yeah I think that's
01:15:55a sense of relief
01:15:56and also a delight
01:15:59for the team
01:15:59that we've actually
01:16:00got back into the series
01:16:01I firmly believe
01:16:022-0 down
01:16:03it would have been
01:16:03a real hard ask
01:16:041-1
01:16:05it sets up the series
01:16:06fantastic
01:16:07and here comes
01:16:08the big fatter
01:16:09he's like a bear
01:16:09really isn't he
01:16:10he is
01:16:10I'm surprised he didn't
01:16:11break my tin rib
01:16:12with that kind of hug
01:16:13but you know
01:16:14fantastic
01:16:14I think that's a moment
01:16:16which is just saying
01:16:17I think we're happy
01:16:17with each other
01:16:18but also
01:16:18Flintoff had a fantastic game
01:16:20he really deserves
01:16:21all the credit
01:16:22this last few days
01:16:22alright well
01:16:23thank you for coming up
01:16:25to talk to us
01:16:25we wish you well
01:16:26in Manchester
01:16:27I'm sure you'll party well
01:16:28tonight
01:16:28and then get down
01:16:29to the real business again
01:16:30I would have thought
01:16:31so the England team
01:16:32have always been
01:16:32very good at that
01:16:33so exactly
01:16:34we've got to enjoy the moment
01:16:35you don't beat Australia
01:16:36but Thursday's going to be important
01:16:38this has been
01:16:39a special occasion
01:16:40the best cricket match
01:16:41that I've ever seen
01:16:42and best of all
01:16:43England won it
01:16:44by two runs
01:16:45tense
01:16:46fabulous
01:16:46and it's won all
01:16:47in the series
01:16:48goodbye
01:16:48we'll be right back
01:16:49we'll be right back
01:16:51we'll be right back
01:17:21we'll be right back
01:17:51we'll be right back
01:18:21we'll be right back
01:18:51we'll be right back
01:18:53we'll be right back
01:18:56we'll be right back
01:18:58we'll be right back
01:19:00we'll be right back
01:19:01we'll be right back
01:19:02we'll be right back
01:19:03we'll be right back
01:19:04we'll be right back
01:19:05we'll be right back

01:19:08we'll be right back
01:19:09we'll be right back
