The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized various assets estimated to be worth over RM183mil following raids on a scrap metal smuggling syndicate.

The raids, carried out in five states, began on Monday (July 14) and progressed across various factories on Tuesday (July 15).

00:21Monday, the MACC team progressed to 13 locations in Penang, Kadah, Johor, and around the Klang
00:30Valley on Tuesday. He said they are identifying parties who are in cahoots with the syndicate
00:35that smuggled out metal and e-waste through the ports in Klang and Penang, causing the government
00:41to lose an estimated 950 million ringgit in tax revenue over the past six years. He said their
00:48focus is on investigations related to soliciting of gratification and false claims and other
00:55elements of criminal offenses, including money laundering. The MACC said the raids saw 45
01:02company accounts and 82 individual banking accounts being frozen, involving about 51 million ringgit.
01:11The seized assets included eight properties in Penang, including three bungalows in Batu Maung,
01:16one penthouse in Tanjung Tokong, and a shop lot in Bayan La Paz, as well as an oil palm plantation
01:23in Kuala Krai Kalantan. They said they also seized six luxury cars estimated to be worth more than
01:291.9 million ringgit and five branded watches worth more than 740,000 ringgit. Reports said that
01:38officers from the MACC's elite anti-corruption tactical squad raided a luxury residence in Batu Maung
01:45on Monday, in an operation centered on a scrap metal company owner who holds a Datuk title.
01:52The suspect, believed to be a foreign national, was not present during the raid. Only several women,
01:58believed to be his wife, mother, and domestic helper, were found at the residence.
