00:00Solidarity in action. As the Philippines marks the ninth year since its landmark legal victory in the West Philippine Sea,
00:07more countries are standing shoulder to shoulder with Manila amidst growing tensions with China.
00:13With defense ties growing deeper and new agreements on the horizon,
00:16the country is making it clear it won't back down from its rights and it's not facing the storm alone.
00:22Patrick Jesus tells us more.
00:24Countries standing in solidarity with the Philippines in asserting its position in the West Philippine Sea
00:32have reaffirmed their continued support amid persistent harassment by China.
00:37Today, the ninth anniversary of the historic 2016 Arbitral Award in favor of the Philippines was commemorated.
00:45This ruling also declared China's nine-dash line claim over the entire South China Sea as illegal.
00:51As part of ongoing efforts, the government is expanding cooperation with partner nations
00:58that also uphold international law and a rules-based order.
01:03This includes plans to establish Visiting Forces agreements with Canada and France.
01:08These agreements streamline and strengthen military cooperation between the Philippines and its partner countries.
01:15VFAs are already in effect with the United States, Australia, and Japan.
01:20While negotiations are ongoing with others.
01:23An enhanced and persistent deployment of Canadian Armed Forces personnel in the Philippines
01:27will also bring our two nations into closer operational rhythm.
01:31Improving interoperability, accelerating response times,
01:35and demonstrating presence in a region where it matters most.
01:37A VFAs would enable more frequent and complex joint exercises, enhance readiness and mutual understanding,
01:46and facilitate coordinated responses to maritime incidents, natural disasters, or emerging threats.
01:53Nakita natin na lumalawag at lumalawig itong scope ng alliances natin with like-minded nations and well-meaning nations.
02:01And now, more and more countries are also speaking up and taking the lead then in this.
02:09Apart from bolstering defense, the Department of Foreign Affairs or DFA emphasized maintaining diplomacy to peacefully resolve maritime disputes.
02:19Deterrence is not only a military concept, but one that indispensably involves guarantees secured by diplomacy to assure peace and stability.
02:31According to the latest Pulse Asia survey conducted in the last week of June,
02:36and commissioned by the Stratbase Group, 73% of the 1,200 respondents, or 7 out of 10 Filipinos,
02:45believe the government should continue asserting the Philippines' rights and sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea.
02:51This also includes fighting disinformation to raise awareness among more Filipinos about the importance of the WPS
02:59and the backing of the 2016 Arbitral Award.
03:03One of the best and the greatest impact of the transparency initiative that we have been doing for almost two years already,
03:11the international community became aware of what's happening and the violation of the Chinese government
03:18with regard to our own exclusive economic zone.
03:23So these transparency efforts made everybody realize that they need to recognize the 2016 Arbitral Award.
03:31It is a historical landmark that could be referred to in the years to come.
03:36As a statement of support by the international body, the United Nations recognizing international law.
03:44This will impact into not only the maritime claims of the Philippines, but all other maritime countries around the world.
03:50According to National Security Advisor Eduardo Año, the arbitral ruling, which now guides the country's national maritime strategy,
03:59cannot be nullified by threats or false information.
04:03Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. also emphasized that standing firm on our rights and sovereignty is not an act of provocation,
04:12but a show of responsibility for the nation and future generations.
