In a Senate Appropriations Committee business meeting on Thursday, Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Jerry Moran (R-KS) discussed reinstating federal grants.
Transcript
00:00Senator Baldwin.
00:02Filling some time as he approaches the DS.
00:07I had an opportunity to have a brief conversation with the chairman following the vote on my amendment to restore some of the NSF grant funds.
00:19I listened to the chairman's objection to that amendment as not having sufficient exceptions.
00:27We pointed to financial mismanagement as one reason not to renew a grant, but he had a couple of others.
00:35I would like to work on an amendment. We were trying to do so during this break.
00:39I believe we did not accomplish that in that timeframe, but I would ask for the chairman's commitment to do that
00:47because we have seen this administration cancel numerous grants in all of our states,
00:54and I think those worthy grants should be reinstated as per our power and authority as an appropriations committee to fund
01:03and expect that the department will expend those funds as we designed.
01:09Senator Moran.
01:12Senator Baldwin, I regret that we were unable to have further conversations during this break,
01:17although I was not absent from conversations.
01:20And I pledge to you that we'll work together to see if there's common ground to advance this language,
01:27some form of this language on the Senate floor should this bill arrive there.
01:33Let's hope it does.
01:35Senator Baldwin, I also want to express my willingness to work with you on this issue.
01:44I think it is very important. I think we do need more exceptions.
01:49And I think this is something that can be worked out for the floor.
01:55I appreciate that, Madam Chair.
