00:00There hasn't been a lot of polling ahead of this state election, but the indications
00:06are that Tasmania is heading towards another minority government.
00:11Some polls are showing that the vote for independence is up, the Green vote is steady.
00:16And we went into this election with the Liberals on 14 seats, Labor on 10 seats.
00:24So both major parties would need to pick up a number of seats in order to win a majority
00:29in a 35-seat parliament.
00:31They've been busy campaigning this week.
00:34The Liberals have been talking education, promising to lift numeracy results.
00:39Labor's been talking health, promising five new bulk-billed GP clinics across the state.
00:47But the leaders of both major parties have had minority government on their minds.
00:52Here's a bit of what they've had to say on the topic to ABC's Stateline program.
00:57We won't do any deals with the Greens.
01:01If I'd done a deal with the Greens, I could have been Premier right now.
01:04If we'd done a deal with the Greens 15 months ago, Rebecca White would be Premier.
01:08We don't do deals with the Greens, but we're happy to work with independents who are prepared
01:12to work with a Labor government that is offering a fresh start.
01:16What doesn't make the parliament work is those single-issue independents who effectively get
01:23less than 1% of the vote statewide that hold this state to ransom.
01:29We cannot afford that.
01:31What we need is a majority Liberal government to continue to get the job done.
01:35So Fiona, if it does end up as a minority government, what then are some of the key things that independents
01:41and the Greens are campaigning for?
01:43Well, Lorna, whoever wins the most seats at the state election is potentially dealing with
01:49a very diverse crossbench.
01:51We have independents calling for gambling reforms, others who want to see big changes
01:56to the salmon industry in Tasmania.
01:59And the Greens want to see regulation on short-stay accommodation.
02:03And alongside that is the big issue of the proposed AFL stadium at Macquarie Point.
02:09Now the Greens, a lot of the independent candidates as well as the National Party are all opposed
02:15to the stadium while the major parties support it.
02:19So like I say, whoever wins government on July 19 potentially has some complicated negotiations
02:25to do with the crossbench.
02:27Lorna.
02:28Then indexed.
02:31It can be reason for peace to go.
