The Safewards program aims to make wards a more positive environment to reduce violence towards healthcare workers. More than half of the staff involved in a pilot said the program impacted conflict in the workplace.

00:00A little familiarity and a friendly chat go a long way.
00:07Myself and the team leader, usually we go and speak to every patient in the ward in the morning,
00:13introduce ourselves to the patients and the family members,
00:16we ask them if they have any questions or concerns.
00:18The Safe Wards program, now rolled out in 10 ACT hospital wards,
00:23involves practical measures for fostering a kinder culture.
00:27It's part of a broader strategy to encourage reporting of safety issues and violence.
00:32We've seen reported incidents of occupational violence go down in some wards, go up in others,
00:38but overall the feedback from staff and from patients and families and carers
00:43is that they're feeling a more positive environment.
00:46They're seeing a reduction in occupational violence,
00:48but also a reduction in the use of restrictive practices like medication to keep patients calm.
00:55There's been concern from peak bodies about violence in hospitals nationally,
01:00particularly in emergency departments.
01:02In the 2022 to 2023 financial year,
01:06there were 50 reports of occupational violence in the Canberra hospitals ED.
01:11The following year, there were 95,
01:13and in the 12 months to this July, there were nearly 170.
01:18And while some of that might be down to an increase in reporting,
01:21researchers like emergency consultant David Coldicott say it could be a symptom of broader issues.
01:29People who are finding it difficult to find their healthcare elsewhere
01:33are using the emergency department as a safety net.

01:41it might be for a pain issue that doesn't require immediate treatment.
