State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce was asked about mechanisms within the U.S. State Department to follow up on investigations into civilian deaths in Gaza.
Transcript
00:00The final thing is, an Israeli airstrike hit Palestinians near a medical center in Gaza today.
00:04It killed 10 children and 6 adults.
00:06I'm wondering if there's been any outreach from the U.S. government to the Israeli authorities
00:11to take any steps to ensure civilians aren't killed in this?
00:14Well, I can't speak to that particular event.
00:17I would direct you to the country of Israel for answers in that regard.
00:22But we have said repeatedly that we decry the death of innocents.
00:27It's why we do what we do in so many countries around the world.
00:30It's part of what informs our action.
00:32And at the same time, we know that it's a war, and we stand by Israel, to say the least.
00:41And we also know that Israel, when it is due, investigates.
00:46And we will wait to see what their action will be, and we'll keep you up to date, obviously.
00:51Yes, Jen.
00:52Can I follow up on that, Tammy?
00:53Sure.
00:53There used to be mechanisms in this building to look into incidents of civilian harm,
00:57using U.S. weapons.
00:58Do those mechanisms still exist?
01:00And have you come to any conclusions with the Karaj of Gaza?
01:02Well, I can tell you again that the choices that we're going to make diplomatically in
01:06reaction to another country's actions or the nature of what's happening around the world,
01:11I won't discuss at this podium or what our process is.
01:14But I can tell you that what I've experienced, and I think what all of you have seen over the
01:18years, is that we have mechanisms like that because we care about those issues.
01:22We have a constant communication with our allies around the world, and that is also something
01:27that we see benefiting the agenda of the President and the work of the Secretary of State.
01:32So clearly, we care about these issues.
01:36We're acting on them actively every day.
01:38And that will be one, obviously.
01:40I can update you on that, I'm sure, as we move forward.
01:43And then quickly.
