State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce was asked about ceasefire proposals in the Middle East, and civilian casualties in Gaza.

00:02Just to go back to the Middle East, is the 60-day ceasefire proposal, was it the same

00:07one that Mr. Rykov proposed to both parties, which includes releasing 10-hours to June

00:13MS NAUERT- I can't speak to that, one way or the other.

00:14I won't give you details regarding that.

00:16No details at all.

00:17MS NAUERT- No, no.

00:18I'm sorry, I can't.

00:19Okay.

00:20Just now, you just condemned attacks on civilians in Ukraine.

00:22MS NAUERT- Of course.

00:23Yesterday, there was an attack on a beach cafe in Gaza where 24 civilians were killed,

00:28including our colleagues, a female journalist, who was killed as well.

00:31Does the United States condemn the killing of civilians on target in Gaza?

00:34MS NAUERT- Well, we have always – one of the reasons why we do what we do is because

00:40no one wants to have civilians killed either in a terrorist act, in war.

00:46One of the things that the President has repeated, as has Secretary Rubio, is that the carnage

00:50has to stop.

00:51We have decried the killing of civilians throughout every conflict that exists.

00:57At the same time, it's why war is hell.

01:00It's why we want something more than – a ceasefire is important.

01:04But it can't be back and forth.

01:05There has to be a durable end to all of these conflicts.

01:11So we mourn like everyone.

01:13Of course, the killing of civilians.

01:16With whomever it is that's engaging in these conflicts.

01:20But that is why we're so committed to Gaza, to Israel's right to defend itself.

01:26We were as horrified by October 7th and the slaughter of those civilians.

01:31This is why it has to end.

01:34There is aggressive actions where if you're in war or if you're defending yourself and

01:39these are civilian areas, it's horrible enough.

01:43And it's another to deliberately target civilians for the sake of it.

01:48And those are the monsters that we are trying to stop and that the world has tried to stop

01:53for generations now.

01:54So this is why our work continues in Gaza.

01:56Why the ceasefire is important and why the end of war and the status quo that so many people

02:05have grown rich from has got to end.
