00:00This will be the perfect moment for a selfie, right?
00:23Selfie!
00:25Three families are leaving the modern world behind.
00:29Everyone smile.
00:30And going back in time, swapping their 21st century lives for an 1880s homestead.
00:38That's the bathroom.
00:39You lying to me.
00:42Armed with just a wagon of supplies and basic shelter.
00:46Oh, wow.
00:47The door is falling off.
00:49They'll spend a summer in the wilderness.
00:51Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey!
00:53And just like the original homesteaders.
00:55This is disturbing for me.
00:57They have no idea what's waiting for them.
01:01What have I brought my family into?
01:04They'll have to farm the land.
01:05This is not what I signed up for.
01:07Feed their families.
01:09It's a miserable fail is what it is for today.
01:12Oh, God.
01:12And work together to survive.
01:15This is really hard work and it really sucks.
01:18I was not prepared for these.
01:20Wow, look at that.
01:21It's the adventure of a lifetime.
01:25But do they have what it takes to make it on the frontier?
01:29If I don't get it done, my family does not eat.
01:32I'm getting really irritated.
01:33It's getting hot in here.
01:35And will what they learn in the past.
01:37What would you like to see more from me as a father?
01:40A little less tough love.
01:42Help shape their family's future.
01:44Confidence is something I'm going to take home.
01:46And I've learned a lot.
01:49Baby, this is the frontier.
01:51And what I learned day one is going to make you or break you.
02:14The first family leaving the 21st century behind.
02:19Welcome to the frontier, girl.
02:21Is the Lopers.
02:23All the way from Alabama.
02:25Baby, we far from town.
02:28Hello.
02:29Welcome.
02:29All of your tech in here, please.
02:31And then makeup and jewelry removal there, please.
02:34I got to get rid of all that.
02:35Got to get rid of all of it.
02:36All right.
02:38My name is Joaquin Loper.
02:39This is my beautiful, beautiful wife, Stacey Loper.
02:42And smile.
02:44We have two sons, Maddox, who is 12, and Landon, who's 14.
02:49Hey, this is my mother, Shirley Loper.
02:51All right, let's go.
02:52The biggest thing I want my kids to learn from this experience.
02:56Good morning, boys.
02:56Time to get up.
02:58Humility and hard work.
03:01I grew up on a farm with my mom.
03:03And this gives my kids a chance to see how dad really was reared.
03:09I believe it's going to present an opportunity for us to grow closer as father and sons.
03:14My mother is 72 years old.
03:17I truly believe what she brings back to the frontier with us.
03:21The knowledge, the experience.
03:22She's going to be a secret weapon.
03:24But she can only stay the first half of the summer.
03:27Before I leave, I want to teach them all the knowledge that I know and how to appreciate what they have now.
03:36Yes, can I do a taste test, please?
03:40I am extremely excited to have my mother-in-law come along.
03:44She will be able to help me with the domestic aspect of it, such as cooking, cleaning.
03:51Because I'm not domestic.
03:53I am so career-driven that doing those things, they aren't me.
03:57You think she'll do the majority of the work for me while she's there?
04:01Be honest.
04:03Probably.
04:06There are so many things that I can learn.
04:08I think that's one of the things I'm really looking forward to experiencing.
04:11So am I.
04:12You better take advantage of it while we are on the frontier, because, baby, when we get
04:22back home, you may not be able to experience that.
04:25And I will.
04:29There's just a whole lot that I'm going to miss.
04:31The amenities is what I'm going to miss most.
04:33Wash room, bath tub, running water.
04:37Hold on.
04:38We're going to have some running water out here.
04:39Yeah, running on the ground.
04:42Y'all are taking me too fast.
04:43I'm in a loss for words at this point that I have to give up all of this to go back to
04:47the frontier.
04:48I'm 21st century hardcore.
04:53Arriving next for the ultimate digital detox.
04:57Oh, look at this.
04:59You guys ready?
05:00Yep.
05:01Our Dallas-based dads, Bahanna Riggs.
05:04All of your tech here, phones, devices.
05:07Okay.
05:08What's first?
05:09No more work.
05:10No more emails.
05:11No more pills, no more pings, no more bings everywhere we go.
05:14Are you guys ready to get rid of these devices?
05:16No.
05:18Alexa, good morning.
05:23I'm Jason Hanna.
05:24My name is Joe Riggs.
05:26We have our twin boys, Ethan and Lucas, that are 10 years old.
05:31Alexa, make an announcement.
05:33Good morning, boys.
05:34It's breakfast time.
05:34Come downstairs, please.
05:35Good morning.
05:36Good morning.
05:37Hi.
05:38Good morning.
05:39If there's a new device released, Joe is typically online, looking it up, how much faster is it
05:46and how much vigor is the screen?
05:47You're all in on the gadgets and gadgets.
05:52Our carpets are continually vacuumed every day.
05:55It creates those perfect straight lines in our carpet that I love.
05:58Joe is very particular about the straight lines.
06:02Home automation is beneficial, but technology in general and being connected all the time can be a big distraction.
06:09It does take away from moments that you should be sharing with the other people that are right in front of you.
06:16Move your time, all y'all.
06:18Going back to the frontier is going to be a life-changing moment for all of us.
06:23We're going to be living with no air conditioning, no electricity, no devices for our kids.
06:30Being able to take all those distractions away and really focus on us as a family unit,
06:35I think is going to be super beneficial in creating that family bond that we want.
06:38Do I have to put this?
06:40Yes, it's all.
06:41No more Nintendo.
06:43You're going to have to talk to us now.
06:44No.
06:45No?
06:49Finally, flying in from Florida, ready to embrace the wilderness.
06:53Here we are.
06:54It's the whole family of five.
06:56Here we go, guys.
06:58Hi, all of your tech in here.
07:00Makeup removal over there.
07:01No.
07:03Regular frontier folk wouldn't have worn makeup.
07:06Our whole face of makeup?
07:08All of your makeup and all of your jewelry.
07:10So it's bye-bye bronzer.
07:13Lip gloss at least, right?
07:14Everything must go.
07:17Sorry, girls.
07:19Bummer, right?
07:21We are the Hulls.
07:23I'm Lena.
07:24I'm Jeremy.
07:25We have three kids.
07:27Mia is 18, Zoe is 16, and Jet is 11.
07:32All right.
07:32We love to do stuff together.
07:35What the heck?
07:36What is he, like five?
07:37I'm not going to have these kids forever.
07:40So while I have them here at home, I want to connect and do things.
07:44We like adventure, especially this guy.
07:48The main reason that we are doing this is because we want to grow food.
07:53We want to live off the land simpler, get away from the technology, go back to doing things
07:58ourselves.
07:58We want to go backwards so that we can go forward in the right direction.
08:04As a parent, I worry about phones and distractions.
08:09And then they just get sucked into the social media.
08:12Okay, post it.
08:13And then real life becomes boring.
08:15What are we doing on the phone?
08:16We took a few pictures.
08:18We were going to post it.
08:19I like that one.
08:19Post that one, yeah.
08:23I love that I can express myself through a post or a story or whatever.
08:28It's just hard to think.
08:29I'm going to leave all this stuff behind my entire life.
08:33I'm going to be stripped from everything we love and everything we know.
08:37Ow, you're actually poking me.
08:39That hurts.
08:40Sorry.
08:41Even though it might definitely suck.
08:43Like, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
08:48Oh, no.
08:50Should I get the pressure washer?
08:52Excuse me?
08:54It's going to be hard for us.
08:55Like, being a teenager is all about, you know, getting dressed up and making yourself look
09:00good and stuff.
09:08Why?
09:09Are you crying?
09:10Why are you crying?
09:14What's the matter?
09:17It's just a confidence.
09:18I think makeup is a little bit of a mask that I wear.
09:23So, removing this off my face, it's scary.
09:27I don't even go to the grocery store without makeup.
09:33So, this is hard.
09:36Where we're heading is going to be an experience that you're not going to even probably think
09:40about makeup or worry about jewelry.
09:42We're going to have a good time and we're going to be building memories in our little
09:45heads, right?
09:45It's going to be fun.
09:47All right?
09:47Okay.
09:48Hall's party of five.
09:50Let's put our hands in on it.
09:52Ready, team?
09:53Let's do it.
09:54Back to the frontier.
09:55Woo!
09:58For our families, there's no turning back.
10:01Everything they encounter from now on will be rooted in history.
10:09They are following in the footsteps of millions of Americans and heading for the frontier.
10:16Their base for the next few months.
10:1910,000 acres of wilderness in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains.
10:27Home to bears, cougars, and moose.
10:30And now, our three families, who are about to meet their new neighbors for the very first
10:38time.
10:39Hi!
10:41Hey, how you doing?
10:42We're good.
10:43Are y'all ready for this?
10:46So, how are we feeling about what's ahead?
10:48I'm excited.
10:48I'm nervous about what foods you guys are going to eat.
10:51We're curious about what I'm going to eat, because I'm a very picky eater.
10:55Hey!
10:56Hi!
10:58How are you all doing?
10:59Good, thank you.
10:59Nice to meet you.
11:00We're the Halls.
11:01Halls?
11:01Yes.
11:02So, have y'all ever done anything like this before?
11:05No.
11:05We're a tight family.
11:06We've done a lot together, but never anything like this.
11:10The first stop for homesteaders looking to settle in the West was the land office, where
11:16many would turn up and request their plot.
11:20So, it's a good place to start for our families.
11:24Land applications filed here.
11:26Applicants must be over 21, single, or head of a household.
11:34Married women may not apply.
11:36Women had really no rights.
11:43Our rights don't come until later.
11:45For two of our families, the customs of the 1880s means the head of the household is clear, but
11:53the Hannah Riggs have options.
11:55How should we figure out the head of household?
11:57It could be either one of us.
11:58Both of us qualify.
11:59We're married.
11:59I don't know.
12:00Joe and I, like, we're both the head of our household.
12:03Like, it's equal.
12:04And coming back to the 1880s, like, there were no two dead families.
12:09I usually do cars and investments.
12:12I'm more of the real estate guy.
12:13He's real estate.
12:14This is more for me.
12:15All right.
12:16Cool.
12:16I'm good with that.
12:17Shall we head in?
12:18Yeah, we should.
12:22Guiding them through the experiment.
12:24Welcome.
12:24Is Homestead Historian.
12:26Great to meet you.
12:28Jeremy, nice to meet you.
12:29Dr. Jacob Freefeld.
12:31Nice to meet you.
12:32I'm a historian of the 19th century American West, and I specialize in the Homestead Act
12:36of 1862.
12:38It's one of the most important social policies in the history of the country.
12:42It gave Americans access to their own little piece, the American dream.
12:45And today, there are as many as 93 million Americans who are descendants of homesteaders.
12:50This is where the homesteading journey started for millions of Americans and immigrants whose
12:54footsteps you're following in.
12:56Now, the Homestead Act was signed by Abraham Lincoln to develop the American West, and it gave
13:00Americans free land, but it wasn't really free.
13:04Homesteaders had to earn the right to keep their land by building homes and farming the
13:08land and making lives for themselves.
13:11And you'll have exactly the same goals.
13:14How do you verify that we fulfilled the obligations to keep the land?
13:19They had to have witnesses like your neighbors.
13:22You're going to trust the word of my neighbor.
13:25I got your back.
13:26Okay.
13:26All right.
13:27Make sure you like each other.
13:28It's going to be a lot of hard work.
13:32Endless hard work.
13:34And that's why one in three homesteaders failed to keep their land.
13:40One in three families failed in the Homestead Act.
13:42I don't see any reason why all three families cannot succeed if we all work together.
13:47But one thing I can tell you, if one of the families do fail, it won't be the Lopers.
13:51Now sign your claim forms.
13:54Because even in the 19th century, there was bureaucracy.
13:58The 21st century is no longer our reality.
14:02I think it's going to be a tough adjustment.
14:04Like, we didn't know the amount of work or labor that's going to require.
14:08There's no turning back now.
14:09Hannah Riggs.
14:11Yes, sir.
14:13Loper.
14:13Here we go.
14:15And Hall.
14:16Yes, thank you.
14:17I'll be over to check on you in a few days.
14:20Good luck.
14:21You're going to need it.
14:22Yeah.
14:22Appreciate it.
14:24Let's get them, boys.
14:25The back of the frontier is a really interesting social experiment.
14:29Because I don't think these folks are going to be prepared for what it means to live in the 19th century.
14:35They're learning about it by living it.
14:39But can they survive?
14:42You got land?
14:43Sure did.
14:45Check it out.
14:48Is it a map to our new land?
14:49It's his whole family.
14:52If we end up the one out of the three that doesn't make it, I think it's going to crush us.
14:56Okay, so what are we going to do on this land?
15:00We have to actually prove that we can work the land.
15:03Oh, this is big.
15:05Yes.
15:06This is huge.
15:07It's not a competition, but it is a competition.
15:12It's going to be tough.
15:14Like, you guys, I'm a little nervous.
15:16The statistics are not necessarily in our favor.
15:18I think looking at our boys being younger, we're going to all have to step up and really do a lot of work.
15:23Your daddies are strong, but we need your help too, right, guys?
15:25I think as long as we can pull together and do this as a team, I think that's going to be our key to success.
15:32Oh, my.
15:33Look.
15:34Woo!
15:35Ha, ha, ha!
15:36Oh!
15:36I just want to do it!
15:38Woo!
15:38Woo!
15:42My ride has arrived.
15:44Well, it wouldn't be a Western without wagons now, would it?
15:49Those are some of the biggest horses I've ever seen.
15:51Oh, they're so beautiful!
15:52Oh, look!
15:53Rolling in is the homesteader's second expert guide, Melissa Norris.
15:59Hi!
15:59Your rides have arrived, 1880s style!
16:03Woo!
16:03Woo!
16:04Woo!
16:04Woo!
16:05Woo!
16:06Awesome!
16:06We have brought your transportation to your homesteads!
16:11Woo!
16:12Woo!
16:12Thank you!
16:13Thank you!
16:13Hi, I'm Melissa.
16:15I'm a 21st century modern homesteader, and I am here to guide you while you're on your homesteads.
16:21But even with someone giving you expertise and advice, you still have to do the work.
16:27It is still going to be very hard.
16:29I'm a fifth generation homesteader, and my husband and family, we homestead on 55 acres
16:34in Western Washington.
16:34We try to raise as much of the things that we consume as possible.
16:40It's hard doing what we do with having electricity and access to modern conveniences, which these
16:46families do not have, so it's going to be even harder for them.
16:49Yeah, this is a little different than what we're used to at home, right?
16:52Two horsepower!
16:53Yay!
16:54You don't have the air-conditioned seat like you do back home.
16:56You're on your way!
16:57I can't see all that!
16:59I'll be around in a few days to see how you've settled in.
17:04Good luck!
17:05Thank you!
17:06Watch out for bears!
17:08Oh, watch out for bears.
17:10They've got their work cut out for them.
17:12I think the one bit of advice is to lean on one another, because truly that's what's going
17:17to get you through.
17:19Time will tell if they do.
17:24Cut off from the rest of civilization, they'll only have each other for company, so let's
17:33hope everyone gets along.
17:35What do you guys think?
17:36Who's going to succeed and who's not going to succeed?
17:39It's not a competition.
17:40We should all come together as one and help each other out.
17:43The locals will definitely be the best at homesteading.
17:48I think it's because the experience that we have on our side.
17:52Yeah.
17:53And I went, Mama Lee!
17:54Woo!
17:55That's enough flesh!
17:56Hang on!
17:57Woo!
17:58Woo!
17:59Woo!
18:00Woo!
18:01Woo!
18:02Woo!
18:03Woo!
18:04Woo!
18:05Woo!
18:06Yahoo!
18:07Woo-hoo!
18:08The Homestead Act drew 4 million folks out to the American frontier, all aiming to change
18:13their fortunes.
18:14Some ran out of money, others just weren't cut out for the back-breaking work.
18:22So the frontier was littered with abandoned cabins in varying states of disrepair.
18:29Cabins just like these ones.
18:31Come on, Mama.
18:32Come on, Mama.
18:33I see all these, like, little cute cabins and cottages on Instagram.
18:37Welcome to your frontier.
18:38Oh, my gosh!
18:40This is home!
18:41And I'm hoping to walk into something like that.
18:46All right.
18:47Oh!
18:48Whoa!
18:49Baby!
18:50Where are my walls?
18:51Is this it?
18:52I'm like, we ain't got no front wall.
18:55How am I going to be able to sleep with that?
18:58Yeah, we got some work to do.
18:59We got to do all this.
19:01Oh, my.
19:02Oh, my gosh!
19:05Wow.
19:06If we're back in the 21st century, this is the worst Airbnb I've ever been to.
19:13This is filthy.
19:15Hopefully, we're going to take care of this, like, real quick.
19:18Yeah.
19:19Fast in the hurry.
19:20Yeah, we're a team, right?
19:22I'm willing to do whatever it takes.
19:24I need some walls, okay?
19:25I don't know.
19:26Where do we get the material from?
19:28So, okay.
19:29We really got to talk about will we have walls tonight?
19:32So, when I first saw this cabin, I'm going to be honest with you.
19:35I'm like, oh, shoot.
19:37But I had to stay strong in front of my family.
19:39So, a lot needs to be done.
19:40And there are no walls separating this.
19:42Yeah, no walls.
19:43So, we have three beds.
19:45Mama in this bed?
19:47Yes, Mama is going to have to take the smaller bed.
19:49And you and I be up here?
19:51And the kids be up here?
19:52Would you rather be close to the heat at night?
19:54Nah, baby.
19:55You're going to warm me up.
19:58I don't need no heat at night.
20:00All right, so this will be our bed.
20:01We need to rearrange some things, though.
20:02Can you start moving some of that stuff?
20:08We got our wall for the night.
20:10We got the bed situation.
20:21We know how everybody is sleeping.
20:22Everybody's good, right?
20:23Everybody's good at the lopers.
20:26But as the wagons roll, new neighbors, the Hannah Riggs.
20:31It's very strange.
20:32Oh, my gosh.
20:33Are finding out that the cabin isn't quite of the standard they're used to.
20:38It's so much smaller than our home.
20:41Uh-oh.
20:42What is this hole in the side, too?
20:44It's certainly not exactly luxury, huh?
20:47Yeah.
20:48This is going to take some getting used to.
20:51Oh, wait.
20:52The steps are broken.
20:53Be very careful.
20:54Careful.
20:55Careful.
20:56There we go.
20:57Let's make sure it's safe.
20:58Oh, wow.
20:59Oh, wow.
21:00It's one big room.
21:01Okay.
21:02Are you guys going to share a bed?
21:03Oh, no.
21:04Oh, guys, look.
21:05See the moss or whatnot?
21:07I think it's to fill the gap.
21:09There's another hole there, and there's a hole on that side, too.
21:12Oh, it's dirty.
21:13Yeah.
21:14We'll have to get this all cleaned up.
21:15How?
21:16How?
21:17How is the question?
21:18Um, in Dallas, like, we have a housekeeper.
21:22Our bathrooms were clean.
21:23Our kitchens were clean.
21:25Here is nothing like it.
21:28It's dirty.
21:29It's gross.
21:31I feel like we need to start getting unpacked, right?
21:34It's such a mess.
21:35It feels like dust is going to fly everywhere.
21:37We probably need to get swept up and clean first.
21:39Yeah.
21:40And that way, and we can wipe down some of the shelves before we put anything on them.
21:44That's a good point.
21:45Ethan, come here.
21:46Ethan.
21:47I want you to kill the bug.
21:48I don't do well with bugs.
21:49See the bug?
21:50Yeah, it's a big bug.
21:51Get it.
21:52You killed the bug.
21:53Having a moment of, like, overwhelm, like, because I don't want the bug sleeping with
21:57me, so.
21:58This is our priority, is getting the holes fixed.
22:00So bugs, bed, and clean.
22:02Clean.
22:03Okay.
22:04We have a lot to do.
22:07I feel like we need a housekeeper.
22:10I wouldn't hold your breath for a housekeeper, Jason.
22:15The Hall family run a home decor company.
22:19Welcome to our new home.
22:20I'm so scared.
22:24But this isn't your average fixer-upper.
22:27What the heck is that?
22:29Wow, look at this.
22:30Where's the rest of it?
22:32Well, look guys, the door is falling off.
22:34No dishwasher, no fridge.
22:36Ew, what?
22:37We have, like, nothing.
22:38Relax, it's all good.
22:40No.
22:41It's gonna be okay.
22:42This is a dream come true for me.
22:44We definitely want this experience.
22:46I've given him so many different experiences and showed him as much of life as I can, but
22:51I've never actually been able to show him an experience like this.
22:54It's really gross.
22:55There's only two beds?
22:57What?
22:58I'm not sharing a bed.
23:00Me neither.
23:01There's no way we're sharing that.
23:03So you and dad share the single, us three share the double?
23:06Yeah, we could work it out.
23:07You can put two people like this and one person like that.
23:10I don't want to share.
23:11That's just gross.
23:13Let's have a positive attitude and not be negative about it.
23:17You guys are acting, like, negatively and kind of snooty and snotty.
23:21That's not the daughter I'm raising right here.
23:23We can make this work.
23:24We've slept in vans.
23:25Why are we complaining about this?
23:27I'm not complaining.
23:28You look like you are and you're throwing me off because I'm enjoying this.
23:31This is amazing.
23:32We have more than we ever expected.
23:34We have two beds.
23:35We could have been one bed.
23:37You know?
23:38This is really good.
23:40I don't think they'd realize that we all are gonna have to take time to adapt to this new
23:45environment, this new lifestyle.
23:48It's hard and I think he just needs to understand that he's just, like, in the attitude that,
23:53oh, everything is so great and it's just like, no.
23:56Like, we actually have to live here for the rest of the summer.
23:59I feel like we scored big.
24:01I mean, we have it all.
24:02There's a building.
24:03We got windows.
24:04We got a porch.
24:05I mean, we're happening here.
24:07We checked all the boxes here.
24:08We don't need anything.
24:09We're good.
24:10If dad and I have to build you a bed, we'll build you a bed.
24:13Okay?
24:14Okay.
24:15Well, that's all you had to say.
24:17For the new homesteaders, there's one more part of the property to explore.
24:24Now known as the restroom, but in the 1880s, it was called an outhouse.
24:30Oh, my.
24:31It's a poop with a view.
24:33Oh, no.
24:34For obvious reasons.
24:36So, is this comfortable?
24:37Does it have a seat?
24:38All right.
24:39Let me look.
24:40Not so much.
24:41It goes pretty deep.
24:42Daddy Jason, where's your bidet?
24:43I don't see any running water.
24:45You don't even have a door.
24:46You need a little privacy in here.
24:48All right.
24:49This is a priority.
24:50Ew!
24:51That's so nasty.
24:52Yeah, stay away from me, girlfriend.
24:53Ew!
24:54Ew!
24:55Zoe has a poop touch!
24:56Everybody run!
24:57Zoe has a poop touch!
24:58Ew!
24:59Now, Stacy is a person who likes her modern comforts.
25:20So, this could get ugly.
25:22That's the bathroom.
25:24You lying to me.
25:26I think we live a pretty lavish life.
25:33I mean, we have a five bedroom, four and a half bath home.
25:37She will walk past one bathroom, come up the stairs, walk past two bathrooms just to go to her room.
25:44It's my toilet.
25:47Landon and Maddox don't use my toilet.
25:51Joaquin has the privilege of using it because I'm married to me.
25:54I have the privilege.
25:55But that's my toilet.
25:58When we travel, I have to look up hotels that are along the way and make sure there are certain standard because I just can't stop at a regular motel or a regular gas station.
26:07No, Stacy's not going.
26:11This is where I have to come to go to the restroom?
26:13Yep.
26:14Yes.
26:15I'm on camera right now.
26:17There's no way that you're telling me my entire family has to walk outside to use the restroom.
26:23Ah.
26:25Y'all, we literally sit on that?
26:27Yes.
26:28But they did leave reading material for you.
26:31Reading material?
26:32Yeah.
26:33The newspaper.
26:34What's the newspaper for?
26:35Read and wipe.
26:36That is not to wipe your butt with.
26:38No.
26:39It's 1800, Stacy.
26:40We don't have toilet paper.
26:41This is real.
26:42This is real, baby.
26:43Okay, but seriously, where do I shower?
26:44There is no shower, Stacy.
26:45There is no shower.
26:46There is no shower, Stacy.
26:47I mean.
26:48In your baths.
26:49They really live like this in the 1800s?
26:50Yes.
26:51Yeah, baby.
26:53I'm sorry.
26:54It's okay.
26:59I was not prepared for this.
27:00It is the 1800s.
27:01Yeah.
27:03Yeah, baby.
27:06I'm sorry.
27:07It's okay.
27:09I was not prepared for this.
27:10It is the 1800s.
27:11Yeah.
27:12Yes, no, no.
27:13for this it is the 1800s yeah but still this is a huge fast difference this is a bit much for me
27:25oh stacy you're gonna be all right you're gonna make it
27:38my 21st century priorities are exactly the same as 1880s priorities my job is to make sure my
27:43family's happy protected hello i want this experience for our family but i can't i don't know
27:57no time for second thoughts now stacy with only a few hours left of daylight these cabins won't
28:04fix themselves but help is on hand wait what is this the home center's almanac almanac
28:13a good almanac was a homesteader's best friend these hefty books gave city folks skills for life
28:21on the frontier from plowing a field to pickling a carrot welcome to the 1880s and your homestead
28:28whilst you're here you must achieve three goals this is what our goals are guys goal one build a secure
28:36comfortable home your cabin is in a state of disrepair but it is vital to make it safe to
28:42provide a comfortable home for your family goal two farm the land and harvest a crop you will be
28:49expected to farm and harvest your land according to the methods of the 1880s homesteaders
28:55wow we have some learning to do goal three fill your winter pantry 1880s homesteaders had to be prepared
29:02for a long and difficult winter your witcher pantry should be full and contain meat vegetables baked
29:09goods and dairy it's a big pantry it's huge it has to be fully stocked it has to be fully stocked
29:17the work is all out there to get it in here yeah really you know and to get it in here right like
29:23we have to get the canning done right the preserving done right if we don't do that right our stuff goes
29:28better yeah i don't know anything about that no that's a lot of work i just wish it wasn't empty
29:34right only then will you prove you are fit to own the land and you've been assigned under the homestead
29:42act just like the 1880s homesteaders your success or failure will be judged good luck oh my so hey
29:50this is what you have to do to survive if we want to eat we got to put in the work
29:55this is as real as it gets we have to not be the ones to fail we do not fail no i'm excited for the
30:04first one which is building the home right because i know i can do that i have plenty of confidence in
30:10that but then the other two i'm a little nervous to get through their ever-growing to-do list
30:18each family member has to pull their weight as soon as they could walk children were given jobs and
30:24by the time they were 10 they would have a long important list of chores like what chores do you
30:29think you'll have no chores yeah i think it's gonna be a challenge with ethan lucas they're not
30:37really chore focused um and we haven't really instilled a lot of hard chores they've never used a mop
30:45no i don't even know what that looks we've got a robot for that we have to learn a lot i don't think
30:50we are ready i don't i don't think we're ready well ready or not here we go the cabins need to be
31:01secure before nightfall it's so dirty when the temperature drops to 50 degrees fahrenheit
31:08hey how is it marching being jeremy can you go and fix the boards outside before bear walks in
31:18tonight okay and then there's the door and then there's that one all right i saw a board out there
31:24that you can put on the by the door is there anything else i can do for you while i'm doing
31:28something yeah later on you can help us clean the floors yeah add it to my list
31:32yeah you fixed it i'm fixing it best i can here next you gotta fix the hole in the kitchen we got
31:43over here i gotta make it comfortable for them if i don't make it i know they're gonna struggle and
31:51complain so i know that i've got a lot of work to do to make this place as much like home as i can
31:57so they're happy a mirror okay at least we have this we can look at ourselves in the morning
32:09sounds like i'm the only one banging out here huh
32:15girl boss it's so tiny both be appreciative i didn't think we were gonna get a mirror i appreciate
32:22you mia oh you just smudged it already oh sorry
32:29here we go you fixed it i fixed it
32:39creating spaces is my thing it makes me happy if we had nothing i would be pretty unhappy but since
32:46there's stuff there's hope right we have a roof over our head it could have been like a tarp
32:55speaking of tarps okay
33:00and i always leave you enough space when you're nailing these in piece of wood
33:03i'm gonna take it out okay
33:04oh i need something to purify this air at this moment i don't think i have ever seen this much dust
33:18i'm tired already it doesn't take much to get me tired
33:22plan you good i'm good we need you to get these things done because once the sun goes down the
33:26temperature is going to change so i have a quick question okay how are we going to get out the door
33:32so i'm gonna put another one up coming the other way uh-huh it's almost be like a drape
33:35okay you just come through okay okay all right
33:42i feel like we have a lot of work to do because what time is it so it's 6 30. okay so we have like
33:48a handful of hours of sunlight so if i feel like let's sweet start sweeping yeah let's figure out what
33:53we're gonna do for dinner and then i think after we eat i think that we need to tend to the house i think
34:00we need to fix the wall i think we need to hang the curtains that is filthy even this is filthy
34:11joe i wonder do we bring the boys in yeah this is ridiculous that we're in here doing it and they're
34:16out there running around yeah let me get them ethan and lucas we need your help for a second i want
34:23you to come in here and we could use your help with some sweeping what we're trying to do is just
34:28sweep everything outside hey ethan if you do that you're just spreading it around instead of putting
34:34in a pile can you put it in a pile for us thank you hey don't destroy our broom we're going to need
34:40this thank you all right put it put it down put it up thank you ethan please ask you to please put it
34:47down thank you what devices do they have what don't they have they've got the smart watches they've got
34:57the ipads they've got all the gaming devices that you could possibly want they just love devices
35:06is your room picked up yeah is it yeah what about the dirty clothes on your floor no do you really
35:11want to lose devices as a consequence because you're not listening whenever we need some kind of reward
35:17or punishment it becomes if you don't do this you will not have devices tomorrow or the flip side is
35:24hey if you get this done then you can have device time it's our consequence it's our carrots
35:29it's it's everything revolves around devices and so no devices for our kids i think we're going to
35:35have our challenges so who wants to set the table not me wait wait oh no excuse me not in the house
35:42already no no no no not in the house dude broken what broke the actual cup or this yeah actual cup
35:51lucas ethan wait where's lucas all right ethan lucas come here please where are they going lucas ethan
36:02joe did they go around the other way ethan and lucas ethan and lucas ethan and lucas guys this is
36:11not a hide and seek you can't just start running off what wildlife is out here you're just running out
36:17you could have spooked a moose and mooses get very aggressive until their food could be sown grown
36:38or caught all the freshly arrived frontier family would have to eat is what they carried with them
36:45that meant basic supplies that would travel well baked beans that's meat and ham yeah so what we have
36:54to think about is what we're going to do for dinner tonight hmm bread ham baked beans i mean this is
37:01normally not what i have to feed my kids to feed my husband all this is way too much
37:10it's so important for me to provide for my family because i grew up in poverty and i always told myself
37:21that i would not raise my family in poverty and this experience is too close to that for me
37:28my kids are about to eat meat out of a can i just feel so insufficient right now and it does not feel good
37:40i mean there are other alternatives i have in the 21st century i have none of none of that
37:51what have i brought my family into like what have i done
37:56uh-oh what's wrong mama i'm not used to this i'm not used to this what we have to eat ham sandwiches
38:07beans for dinner don't worry this is what's provided for them right now it's canned ham they may like
38:13canned ham okay if they don't want this they go to bed hungry if we don't eat nothing that's
38:19our fault not yours i love y'all so much we love you too y'all are doing so much better than me
38:32i really have to wrap my head around you and i gotta do to make sure that i don't continue to feel like
38:39this this is gonna take a lot yeah we don't really have a sense of time out here i think it's like
38:52seven eight o'clock i'm hungry you're hungry yes i'm hungry we want food we want food we have a bunch
38:59of canned ham is this a can opener i think so yeah i'll show you how to use it for jeremy it's the can
39:07rather than the ham that's causing problems i think this is it i think that's it
39:16you know like that would go in there this is just ridiculous we can't even open our dinner
39:21we're gonna go hungry if only we could look it up i'm gonna end up breaking it yeah i don't want to
39:27break it and then we never get to open any cans again i just want to eat
39:32i doubt this is the way it's done but it's working it smells like dog food it stinks
39:48here we go yummy huh
39:51dinner is served yummy let's eat to the frontier yes and to the journey we have ahead of us and all
40:03our success cheers cheers cheers the term cheers wasn't actually popularized until the 20th century
40:12but i'll let that one slide all right right we're in this thing yeah we're here let's look at this
40:22neil this is what an 1880 family would eat and be happy for it this is my pizza this ain't door dash
40:31this is what we have to make do with all right so i want y'all to be appreciative and be thankful okay
40:36all right all right all right before i came to the frontier if i would have seen that menu i'd have
40:43been like you know what y'all can have that i'm like absolutely not how are the beans tasting buddy
40:50good i think the foods are really good okay do you want some more beans no i don't think i want
40:55any more beans you know what i need right now what a microwave right that'll make all this better the
41:02ham is good though it's good it's cold my wife is struggling with having to feed the kids canned meat
41:10and i'm struggling with trying to be strong to eat the canned meat hey y'all know if if we want better
41:17we got to do better right you got to get out there and work the field work out behind all grow it and
41:21get it okay as the sun starts to set our three families settle in for the night that's comfortable
41:39but without enough beds to go around the kids are left to share i think sleeping is going to be a
41:46challenge i think without our typical white noise and our air conditioning and our box
41:51fans and our ceiling fans and we don't have any of that you know what the white noise will be
41:57me snoring it's a lot to wrap our heads around being thrown back into a world that we don't know
42:05anything about and just trying to survive which isn't necessarily easy
42:11these mosquitoes are a bit much sweet dreams guys sweet dreams good night
42:21good night we'll be right next door i'm really proud of my family for making it here to give
42:32up everything they have i mean they knew they were going to try something different but they had no
42:37idea it was going to be like this the bed stinks i really just want them to feel the same way as me i want
42:45them to be positive i want them to be excited but all in all they're teen girls what teen girl would
42:53want to stay in a dirty cabin with their parents and their little brother it's going to take a lot of
42:58adjusting and a lot of getting used to here oh my god this is a nightmare i can't sleep with this
43:04kid stop it and go to sleep heavenly father oh gracious god we thank you for letting us be able
43:13to embrace this experience lord we thank you for everything you're giving us lord even the food that
43:17we had say lord even though it wasn't what we're used to lord we thank you jesus in our prayer amen
43:23today truly left me speechless as a husband to see my wife cry and knowing that i couldn't do
43:28anything about it not knowing really what tomorrow has in store for us
43:33is there a little bit of anxiety yes there is am i trying to stay calm yes i am but am i worried yes
43:39i am today was like a slap in the face it was like a ton of bricks fell on me and i didn't know how to
43:47handle it i'm very stressed high anxiety right now it's just day one i can only imagine what tomorrow may
43:55bring i'm living history right now
44:08coming up this season
44:12not only it it is beautiful

44:21it's coming out i just made an apple pie i'm doing it for an unforgettable summer oh mr gilbert the
44:30holes are back show me what you got good morning class oh my gosh 21st century there's always that
44:40question am i good enough but now confidence is something i'm gonna take home if i was home i'd just
