00:00High noon, Jones and Keith on WEEI.
00:04A lot of ways to listen.
00:05You can stream anytime on the Odyssey app,
00:08as well as the iHeartRadio and TuneIn apps.
00:12We've talked a lot of Celtics this week.
00:13You hear Brad Stevens there yesterday
00:16discussing the official trades.
00:19They went official, finalized.
00:21Porzingis, Andrew Holiday, as well as an outlook
00:23on the rest of the offseason.
00:25I personally was a little discouraged by that answer.
00:27Best move we can make is Tatum getting out of a walking boot.
00:31Justin Turpin, Turp from WEEI,
00:34joining us here, Pure Hoops with Turp.
00:36You were there yesterday, Turp.
00:37What did you think?
00:38I thought he was rather candid.
00:40I mean, he straight up said that they made offers
00:42to Al Horford and Luke Cornett
00:43and admitted that he wasn't sure
00:45what he could really talk about about that
00:47and admitted that Al Horford probably wasn't going to be back,
00:49which I thought was interesting.
00:50And I thought the whole thing surrounding luxury tax as well,
00:53where he acknowledged the benefits of it,
00:55but also acknowledged that that's not a priority
00:57for Bill Chisholm and the new ownership group.
01:00I thought that part was interesting too.
01:01So I think he's been really upfront and honest
01:03about this whole thing while being optimistic
01:06and also being a realist at the same time,
01:08where you keep hearing him mention this North Star
01:10and it's about competing for a championship,
01:12but it feels like that's pretty far away.
01:14And he also, another thing that stood out to me
01:16was the bigs when he was asked about
01:17how comfortable he is with the front court,
01:19what they have right now.
01:20Obviously, it's just Luka Garza.
01:22Luka, Xavier Tillman is more of a four,
01:24but he can slide in there.
01:25Nami Ish Kata, there's not really a ton there.
01:27And he said, we'll wait and see what happens.
01:29And to me, that sounded like,
01:31yeah, they might suck on paper
01:32and we'll see what happens.
01:34Where do you stand now on Anthony Simons
01:36and even George Niang being with the team?
01:39Yeah, I mean, for right now,
01:40if getting under the tax is not one of their priorities,
01:44it would make sense.
01:45It shouldn't be.
01:46The tax, not the apron.
01:47The tax.
01:47The apron, but they're only,
01:49it's less than a half a million dollars
01:50that they're over the apron.
01:51And they don't have to do it
01:52until the deadline.
01:52Until the deadline anyway.
01:53At the end of the year,
01:54the end of the league calendar,
01:55and they can get under the second apron
01:56by as simple as just waiving
01:58J.D. Davidson's non-guaranteed contract.
02:00So that's not an issue.
02:02But if you're going to get under the tax,
02:03you'd have to do it
02:04for two of the next three years.
02:05And when Jason Tatum comes back,
02:07the expectation from the fan base
02:09and pretty much everyone else
02:10is that you're going to go
02:11right back into spending
02:12and right back into trying to maximize
02:13the prime of one of the best players
02:16in the NBA.
02:17So I don't think it makes any sense
02:19to duck under now.
02:20Maybe if you're at the deadline
02:21and things are kind of faltering
02:24a little bit,
02:24this team is underachieving
02:26and they're not really living up
02:28to what people think they can.
02:29I know you have them winning
02:30pretty close to the top
02:31of the Eastern Conference there.
02:32And I think that's a real possibility.
02:34There are still talent on this team.
02:35So I think it makes sense
02:36to hold on to those guys
02:37until the deadline
02:38and see where you're at
02:39and make your decisions there.
02:41I think you mentioned Brad
02:42was pretty candid yesterday.
02:43And I'd agree.
02:44I mean, he said we made trades
02:45because of the second apron.
02:47Which everyone knew.
02:47Yeah, but I don't agree that,
02:49you know, basketball penalties
02:51were the reason why.
02:52But I think he told you right there,
02:53like, there's not a lot
02:54of big moves coming.
02:55The biggest thing we can do
02:56is Tatum getting out of a boot.
02:57He also talked about
02:58the returns they got
02:59for Holiday and Porzingis.
03:01He's like, hey,
03:02we made the moves
03:02because of the second apron,
03:03but we're fortunate
03:04because we like the players
03:05we got back.
03:05I thought his original statement
03:08that got released
03:09in a press release
03:10about Anfernee Simons
03:12was pretty terse.
03:12Yeah.
03:13And, you know,
03:14not very flowery.
03:16He was saying nice things
03:17about the players
03:18they got yesterday,
03:19which makes me wonder,
03:20are they a little more locked in
03:22on keeping those guys?
03:23Which I want.
03:24I would be happy,
03:24at least on Simons.
03:25I don't care about Niang.
03:26But at least on Simons,
03:27I do want him here.
03:28How'd you read his compliments
03:29of the players they got?
03:30He definitely left the door open.
03:31I mean, I'd imagine
03:32just with the salary
03:33that Anfernee Simons
03:34is on right now
03:35and what they're doing
03:36with the retooling year
03:37that they're going to keep
03:38trying to explore trading him.
03:40That's just kind of
03:40the situation they're in.
03:42And it makes sense,
03:43I mean, to keep him around
03:44like I said,
03:45until the deadline,
03:45especially now
03:46if they've been actively
03:47trying to move him
03:48and nobody's really biting.
03:49Gas up his value.
03:50He's going to get tons of shots
03:52in this offense.
03:52And I think,
03:53I've mentioned this
03:54with you guys before,
03:54that Joe Mazzula
03:55can really help fix his defense.
03:56I think that's something
03:57that's been overlooked with Joe
03:59is how good he's done
04:00or how good of a job
04:01he's done with the defense.
04:02I mean, they've finished
04:03second, second, and fourth
04:04in defensive ratings
04:05since Joe's been here.
04:06And obviously it helps
04:07when you're surrounded
04:08by good defenders
04:09like Jalen Brown's
04:10a great defender.
04:11Derek White's a great defender.
04:12So having those guys
04:14on the court with you
04:14helps mask
04:15your defensive deficiencies.
04:17So I think there's
04:18a win-win for both sides
04:20to at least keep him
04:21until the trade deadline.
04:22And I mean,
04:22I know all three of us
04:23are all over it.
04:24I mean, we'd like to see him
04:25stick around for longer than that.
04:27I mean, for sure.
04:27You don't find a scorer like that,
04:29you know,
04:29for the price that they got him at.
04:31And I know Drew Holiday
04:32is a hell of a player
04:32and they're definitely
04:33going to miss him.
04:33But in the long term,
04:35like this could be a good fit
04:36for the Celtics.
04:36It's just tough looking at it.
04:38He's going to be extension eligible
04:39next year,
04:39obviously on an expiring deal.
04:41It's probably going to be
04:42around 25 to 30 million.
04:44If at that point,
04:45Holiday was making 30,
04:46you'd think they're really
04:46going to turn around
04:47and give it to Simons.
04:48I just, I don't know.
04:49So the whole thing's
04:50kind of in flux,
04:51but again,
04:51it makes a lot of sense
04:52to hold on to him
04:52until the deadline.
04:53What do you think
04:53of all the Damian Lillard discussion?
04:55I think it's interesting
04:56and I think it does make
04:57a lot of sense
04:57for both parties.
04:59I mean,
04:59the expectation again
05:01is especially
05:02if they stay in the tax
05:03is that they're going
05:03to be competitive again
05:04for the 26-27 season.
05:07That sounds so gross to say.
05:08I don't want them
05:11to punt on the season
05:12because we just saw
05:14an Indiana Pacers team,
05:15which all credit to them,
05:16like really well coached.
05:17Halliburton's an awesome player
05:18and like they had guys
05:19step up and play well,
05:20but if Neesmith and Nembhard
05:22are starting players
05:24on a NBA Finals team,
05:26why can't Brown, White
05:27and a few other guys
05:28scrap it together
05:29in an Eastern Conference
05:30that's wide open,
05:31but all indication
05:32that you get is
05:33it's we got to be ready
05:34when Tatum returns.
05:35Right,
05:35and you can still make
05:36some noise this year
05:37and again,
05:38Brad Stevens isn't ruling out
05:39that Jason Tatum
05:40returns this year.
05:41I know he won't put
05:42a timeline on it.
05:43He's been very,
05:44very intentional about that
05:46and just kind of
05:47letting him progress
05:47and he's been very clear too
05:49that they're not going
05:49to rush him back.
05:50The Indiana Pacers
05:51already ruled out
05:51Tyrese Halliburton
05:52for the year.
05:53Brad Stevens wasn't willing
05:54to make that declaration
05:55and we'll see.
05:56I mean,
05:56we see all the videos
05:57that he's sharing
05:57and it seems like
05:58he's progressing
05:59at a good pace,
06:00but they don't want
06:00to rush him back whatsoever
06:01and if that means
06:03kind of punting on this year
06:04and just trying to go,
06:05we've seen them do this before,
06:06right?
06:07We saw it with the
06:07Isaiah Thomas years.
06:08They went to the
06:09conference finals that year.
06:10You mean to tell me
06:11a guy like Jalen Brown
06:12can't have a season like that?
06:13A guy like Derek White,
06:14Peyton Pritchard even,
06:15hell,
06:16even Anthony Simons.
06:17They have talent
06:18on this team.
06:19I just think too often
06:20it's been like,
06:21oh,
06:21they're going to be
06:21like the Wizards.
06:22They're going to be
06:22like the Jazz.
06:23That's just not the case.
06:24There is still talent
06:25on this team.
06:25We read the BetMGM
06:27over under yesterday
06:29as 43.5,
06:30which is a big drop
06:31from the year prior.
06:32They were 58.5,
06:33but 43.5 would still
06:34put you out of the plan
06:36in the East a year ago.
06:37Yeah,
06:37I don't think so either.
06:39Look,
06:40I think they can be
06:40better than that.
06:42What do you think
06:43Lillard's going to have
06:43left in the tank?
06:44Because I get what
06:45Keefe is saying
06:45where you do want
06:47to retool the team
06:48for 2027.
06:50Like,
06:50I want them to compete
06:51in a wide open East
06:51this year,
06:52but I acknowledge
06:53they're not winning
06:53a championship.
06:54Even competing
06:55in a wide open East,
06:56a championship
06:56is not a realistic
06:57expectation.
06:59It could be
06:59in 2027.
07:01So I do get
07:02the interest level
07:02in Lillard.
07:03That's assuming
07:04he's even the Lillard
07:05you got in Milwaukee,
07:06never mind the Lillard
07:07you got in Portland.
07:08He's older,
07:09he's on the wrong
07:09side of an Achilles.
07:10What do you think
07:11they would actually get
07:12or whatever team signs
07:13him will actually get
07:14when he's back
07:14on the floor?
07:15I mean,
07:15that's the interesting
07:16part.
07:17I mean,
07:17because a lot of
07:17his game too
07:18is finesse
07:19and it's acceleration
07:21and all that stuff
07:22that you need
07:22your Achilles
07:23and threes,
07:23which would be a good
07:25thing for the Celtics.
07:25But he turns 35
07:27next week,
07:27assuming he misses
07:28all of next year,
07:29he's going to be 36
07:30when he hits the floor
07:31again.
07:31And I think
07:32the financial aspect
07:33of it makes a lot
07:34more sense,
07:34right?
07:35Because he's got
07:35all this money
07:36still coming to him
07:36from Milwaukee
07:37that he can take
07:38less to come to a team
07:39like Boston.
07:40And I also think
07:41there just won't be
07:42as much stress on him.
07:43Assuming the core
07:44stays intact,
07:45where you'll have
07:45Jason Tatum
07:46as your clear number one,
07:46you'll have Jalen Brown,
07:47you'll have Derek White,
07:48and you'll have
07:48Peyton Pritchard,
07:49you'll have all these
07:50scorers around you
07:51that he's not going
07:52to be asked to do
07:53what he was asked
07:53to do in Portland
07:54or even in Milwaukee.
07:56So I think
07:56it makes sense
07:58for both sides
07:59to at least consider it,
08:00especially if he wants
08:01to go out and actually
08:02try to have a chance
08:03to win something.
08:04I think if you're
08:05the Celtics,
08:06I think a lot of teams
08:07are going to do this.
08:08You're going to dip
08:08into the second apron,
08:09then you're going
08:10to dip back out,
08:10and it's just kind of
08:11going to be like
08:11a back-and-forth
08:12type of thing.
08:13That's the way
08:13the league is set up
08:14right now,
08:14and I think it makes
08:15a lot of sense
08:15for him to at least
08:16consider it,
08:17especially if he wants
08:18a chance to win.
08:18And you've mentioned
08:19a couple times now.
08:20The Eastern Conference
08:20is wide open.
08:21You get Jason Tatum
08:22and Jalen Brown
08:23back on the floor together,
08:24and you've still got
08:25Derek White and those guys.
08:26This is a team
08:27that's going to be
08:28ready to compete again
08:28when Tatum's back.
08:29What would you have
08:30to pay Lillard?
08:31That's the thing.
08:32I would imagine
08:33he's willing to...
08:34I don't think
08:34he'd be a full-on minimum.
08:36I don't think he'd be that.
08:37I think he could do
08:37better than that,
08:38but I also...
08:39I don't know.
08:39Mid-level?
08:40Probably the mid-level.
08:41Mid-level over a couple years
08:42is the one that I've seen.
08:43So what is that?
08:44Five and change?
08:45Almost six, I think, right?
08:47Yeah.
08:47So let's call it six and ten
08:48would be my guess.
08:49So again,
08:50that in the grand scheme
08:51of things isn't a ton.
08:52I just wonder, though,
08:52if you're Bill Chisholm
08:54and you've already
08:54sort of said,
08:55all right,
08:55we've got to get
08:56under the apron,
08:56we've got to shed salary.
08:59We're paying Tatum
09:00$54 million basically
09:02to rehab.
09:02Let's give six to ten.
09:03So $60 plus million
09:05is not even going to be
09:07on the court this year.
09:08Right.
09:08I feel like it's tough
09:09when you should be
09:10trying to compete.
09:11Now, I'm not saying
09:12like sell out
09:12for this season or anything,
09:13but you should be
09:15as competitive as possible
09:16because you never know
09:16how things are going
09:17to play out.
09:17That's why as much
09:18as I love Lillard,
09:19the player,
09:19I have questions
09:20about him recovering
09:21from this injury.
09:23You also have like
09:23blood clots prior
09:25to this injury,
09:26his age,
09:27but then also he's
09:28like just,
09:30it's just money
09:31that you could be using
09:32on another player
09:33that might actually
09:34help you include
09:35like a starting big man.
09:36I mean,
09:36I wonder what teams
09:37are going to offer him
09:38something, right?
09:39If like the Celtics
09:39are his best offer
09:40and they're like,
09:41hey,
09:41you're going to have
09:41to wait a year
09:42until you're actually
09:42going to play.
09:43I wonder if he's
09:43willing to sit that
09:44out and wait.
09:45I mean,
09:45it's just about,
09:46you know,
09:47he kind of,
09:48he has an advantage
09:49now because he's
09:49still getting that
09:50money from Milwaukee.
09:51So if he wanted
09:51to wait around
09:52and see if like,
09:53hey,
09:53the Celtics give me
09:54the best chance
09:55to compete
09:55and win a title
09:56and he wants
09:57to wait around
09:57and you know,
09:58you're only passing
09:58on 5 million
09:59and in the grand
10:00scheme of things
10:00for him,
10:01it's really not
10:01that big of a deal.
10:02I don't know.
10:03It just depends
10:04on where his head
10:04is at,
10:05I guess.
10:05Would you have
10:06any interest
10:06in Bradley Beal
10:07who is,
10:08it sounds like
10:08going to get bought
10:08out in Phoenix?
10:09I've seen him
10:10kind of ticketed
10:11to the Clippers.
10:11Yes.
10:12Would you have
10:12any interest
10:13in Beal?
10:13I'm all set
10:14with that one.
10:14Me too.
10:15I'm all set
10:15with that.
10:16We've done this before.
10:16The only reason I ask,
10:17the only reason I ask,
10:19at least he would
10:19play this year
10:20whereas Lillard
10:21would be sitting out.
10:22That's true.
10:22But yeah,
10:23Beal feels pretty cashed.
10:24And what would
10:25the money take
10:26for him,
10:26right?
10:26That would almost
10:27certainly put you
10:27back into the second
10:28apron for this season
10:29and you know,
10:30you don't go out
10:31of the second apron
10:32to go right back in.
10:33They're eventually
10:33going to,
10:34but it's not going
10:34to be this year.
10:35Like they're going
10:35to come out
10:36of the second apron
10:36this year.
10:37That was clear
10:38because if they weren't,
10:39they would have kept
10:39Kristaps Porzingis
10:40and Drew Holliday.
10:41So yeah,
10:42I don't think
10:42there's any chance
10:42of that happening
10:43just because of the salary
10:44he's going to,
10:45he's going to demand
10:45and it's going to be
10:46interesting to see
10:47how they kind of
10:48maneuver it,
10:48right?
10:48Because obviously
10:49you have trade pieces
10:50in Simons and Niang.
10:52I think you want
10:52to kind of keep
10:53the core intact.
10:54I thought another
10:54interesting part
10:55of Brad Stevens
10:56press conference
10:57yesterday is when
10:57he was mentioning
10:58the core of this year.
10:59He mentioned
11:00Derek White,
11:01Peyton Pritchard,
11:02Jalen Brown,
11:05a common name
11:06in trade talks.
11:07Because I was surprised
11:08when you were talking
11:09about tradable players,
11:10you didn't even
11:10lump in Hauser there.
11:11So Brad had him
11:12as part of the core.
11:13Brad did mention him
11:13as part of the core
11:14yesterday.
11:14And that makes a lot
11:15of sense to me.
11:16It's not a great core.
11:16I think that makes
11:17a lot of sense to me
11:18to hold on to him.
11:18I mean,
11:19the lineups with Tatum
11:19and Hauser in it
11:20were some of the most
11:21efficient on the team
11:22last year.
11:23And it's hard to find
11:24a guy that shoots
11:2440% consistently.
11:25As soon as you get rid of,
11:26he's simply an obvious
11:27guy to get rid of
11:28because of the $10 million
11:29spike now.
11:30Or he goes from
11:30$2 million to $10 million.
11:32But then as soon as
11:33you are good,
11:34that's the exact guy
11:35you're looking for.
11:35That's a manageable
11:36contract now.
11:37And it's really not much.
11:38When you're paying
11:39other guys $30,
11:40$50 million.
11:41It's $10 for the next
11:42two years.
11:43And that goes up to
11:44I think $11 and $12
11:45in years $3 and $4.
11:45That's very manageable
11:46for an elite floor spacer
11:48who I think is an
11:48underrated rebounder as well.
11:50And it's very efficient
11:51with your best player
11:52on the floor.
11:53I mean,
11:53it's all about floor
11:53spacing with this team.
11:54That's something that
11:55Joe Mazula's done
11:56a great job in really
11:57teaching these guys
11:58the importance of
11:59spacing the floor.
12:00And that's kind of
12:00what makes their offense
12:01their offense.
12:02Well, that's the thing.
12:03He's one of the best
12:03in the game.
12:04If they keep
12:05Simons, Hauser, Niang,
12:07I mean, they're going
12:08to break their previous
12:09record for threes.
12:10They're going to give
12:10even more threes
12:11than they did before.
12:11Even without Tatum.
12:12That's what I'm saying.
12:13No, I agree.
12:14Because those guys
12:15will take even more.
12:16So Tatum's shots,
12:17especially if Simons
12:18is still here,
12:19I mean, he could take
12:20most of those shots
12:21than those other guys too.
12:21Off the top of my head,
12:22I think when the games
12:23that Hauser started,
12:24he took five or six
12:25threes a game.
12:26And I'd imagine
12:27if he's sticking around,
12:28he's going to start.
12:29My guess would probably
12:30be Derek White,
12:31Peyton Pritchard,
12:33Sam Hauser,
12:35Jalen,
12:36and then Namiya Shkata.
12:37I think that's,
12:37or maybe Luka Garza.
12:38That's your five.
12:39See, I like the idea
12:40of keeping Pritchard
12:41off the bench
12:41as like the sixth man,
12:43but maybe you just can't.
12:44I think they'd do that
12:45with Simons.
12:46Yeah.
12:46I'm with Keith.
12:47I'd rather have
12:48Pritchard off the bench.
12:48Pritchard was so good at it.
12:49I'd rather have Pritchard
12:50off the bench
12:50than Simons,
12:51but either or.
12:51I mean, regardless,
12:52he's going to play
12:53the most minutes
12:54on the team this year.
12:55Yeah.
12:55What,
12:55what's the latest
12:57on Horford?
12:58You asked Brad yesterday
12:59where it stood.
13:01He said it was unlikely
13:02they've made offers
13:03to Cornette,
13:04now a Spur,
13:05and Horford.
13:05He made it sound unlikely.
13:06What's the latest?
13:07Is he going to retire?
13:08Is he going to retire?
13:09Is he going to the Lakers?
13:10Is he going to the Warriors?
13:11What's your best guess?
13:11Now that the Lakers
13:12got eight
13:13and it doesn't make
13:13a whole lot of sense
13:14for him to go there,
13:15I think it's right now
13:16it's Warriors or retirement.
13:18And I think that's
13:18what he's considering.
13:19It seems like the Celtics
13:21and Brad Stevens
13:21explicitly said this yesterday.
13:23They definitely made an offer
13:24to both,
13:24both Cornette and Horford.
13:26And there was probably
13:27some conversation in there
13:28by him saying
13:29that it was unlikely.
13:30And this is just reading
13:30between the lines
13:31that Horford didn't
13:32like that offer.
13:33And it probably wasn't
13:35a lot of money.
13:35And that's the reality
13:36of the situation.
13:37And for him,
13:38does it really make
13:39a lot of sense
13:39to come back at
13:4039 years old
13:41and play for a gap year?
13:43Like,
13:44does it really make
13:44a lot of sense?
13:45If Tatum was healthy,
13:46I think maybe he plays
13:47for whatever
13:47and he's come back
13:48and runs it back.
13:49But yeah,
13:50once he went down,
13:50and that's right
13:51where his tune changed,
13:53right when Tatum went down.
13:54I think he was dead set,
13:55always vocal
13:56about wanting to come back.
13:57And when Florida
13:59won the national championship,
14:00he was like,
14:00well,
14:01maybe we'll be playing
14:01with Walter Clayton Jr.
14:02next year.
14:03Like,
14:03he was so dead set on it
14:05right when Tatum got hurt
14:06and they got eliminated.
14:07That's where his tune
14:08kind of shifted
14:09a little bit.
14:10And then,
14:10you know,
14:11everyone kind of had an idea
14:12that it just didn't make sense
14:13anymore with the timeline
14:15of the team
14:15as much as it sucks.
14:16Like,
14:16obviously Al Horford's
14:17a big fan favorite here
14:19and,
14:19you know,
14:19an all-time Celtic
14:20like Brad Stevens
14:22said yesterday.
14:22But the timeline
14:23just doesn't make sense
14:24anymore,
14:25unfortunately,
14:25on that.
14:26And if you're Al Horford,
14:27like,
14:27just go out and compete.
14:28Like,
14:29go take another shot
14:30if you still,
14:30and you can make a good money.
14:31Like,
14:32the Warriors are going
14:32to give him some money,
14:33especially depending on
14:34what happens with Kaminga.
14:35So,
14:35man,
14:36it makes a lot of sense
14:36for him and it just
14:37doesn't make a lot of sense
14:38for the Celtics
14:38to hold on to him.
14:39Do you have any prediction
14:40for any,
14:41like,
14:41that next wave of guys
14:42that might make
14:43any kind of an impact
14:44with the team?
14:44Talking about,
14:45like,
14:46Shireman or,
14:47you know,
14:48Hugo Gonzalez,
14:49for God's sakes.
14:50Like,
14:50any of these other guys.
14:51I mean,
14:51Tillman might be forced
14:52into that.
14:53Yeah.
14:53J.D. Davidson,
14:54people will bring up
14:55from time to time.
14:55I think he's going
14:56to be the one
14:56that gets waved
14:57to get below the second eight,
14:58but depending on
14:59what happens here,
15:00I just think.
15:00It's a G League MVP.
15:02That is a G League MVP.
15:03Yeah.
15:03And Mish Kato
15:05was the runner-up
15:06for G League MVP
15:07three years ago.
15:08So look at these guys.
15:09Look at all these guys.
15:10I mean,
15:10I think it'd be Shireman.
15:11He's going to get opportunities.
15:13And so is Jordan Walsh.
15:14Like,
15:14these younger guys
15:15are going to get opportunities
15:16to play.
15:16Just to circle back,
15:17Shireman is why I assumed
15:18Hauser was expendable.
15:19Right.
15:20So I wouldn't be surprised
15:21at all if Shireman
15:22is the one who emerges
15:23out of that group.
15:23Shireman's probably
15:24the one that emerges.
15:25I think Hugo Gonzalez
15:26is going to get a chance,
15:27too.
15:27I think he'll probably
15:28start this year in Maine
15:30if I had to guess,
15:31but, like,
15:31he's going to get a chance
15:32to play this year.
15:33I mean,
15:34depending on where
15:35they kind of are shaking up
15:36as the season goes along,
15:37like,
15:37they might just lean
15:38into this youth movement
15:39and see who can kind of play
15:41with these guys
15:41when they come back.
15:42How'd you read Brad's answers
15:43yesterday on Joe Mazzoula?
15:45He confirmed he has
15:46multiple years left
15:47on his deal.
15:48He was asked,
15:49is it a priority
15:50to work out an extension?
15:51He didn't really answer it.
15:52He said,
15:53well, yeah,
15:53we want Joe here
15:54for a long time,
15:54but he didn't answer
15:55the priority aspect directly.
15:57So how'd you read
15:59Brad Stevens
15:59on Mazzoula yesterday?
16:01I honestly think
16:01he might just be sick
16:02of the question.
16:03He's got it three times
16:04this offseason.
16:05Like,
16:05he's answered it
16:06a couple times now
16:06that Joe Mazzoula
16:07is under contract
16:08for the foreseeable future.
16:09Bill Chisholm
16:10and his wife
16:10are big fans of Joe.
16:11I think there's no reason
16:12to think that he wouldn't
16:13be in line for an extension.
16:15I think he's the guy
16:16that kind of...
16:17Let me give you a reason.
16:18Bill Chisholm,
16:18we got a text,
16:19by the way.
16:20Guys,
16:20you have no idea
16:21what Chisholm is doing.
16:22You're already ripping him.
16:23Come on,
16:23see what happens.
16:24We are watching what happens.
16:25He's peeling stuff off.
16:26He got rid of two players
16:27that they just brought in.
16:28I don't know.
16:28The owner feels like
16:29he doesn't want to hand out
16:30a lot of money
16:30when it comes to
16:32the luxury tax.
16:32Maybe he doesn't want to
16:33hand out a lot of money
16:34on a coach.
16:34And maybe Mazzoula
16:35wants to be well compensated.
16:36Regardless,
16:36he's under contract
16:37for the next couple of years.
16:38Don't you think,
16:39though,
16:39that next year kind of gets...
16:40Yeah,
16:41I guess the money thing
16:41is a different factor altogether.
16:43But Mazzoula,
16:44like,
16:45I don't know how much pressure
16:46is even on him
16:46for next year
16:47without Tatum.
16:48I feel like losing
16:49in the second round,
16:50and I'll say with...
16:51I know Tatum got hurt
16:52at the end,
16:52but they were going to
16:52lose the series anyway.
16:53So you lose in the second round,
16:55and then if Tatum was back
16:56and you lost
16:57in the second round again,
16:59the way NBA teams
17:00go through coaches,
17:01he might have been gone.
17:02But now,
17:03if you just make the playoffs
17:04with a team without Tatum,
17:05I think you're back again.
17:06I think it sort of extends
17:07his lifetime,
17:08regardless of what
17:08his contract is.
17:09I mean,
17:09it's a win-win for him.
17:10I think he's in the best
17:11situation out of everybody
17:13for this.
17:13Either they overachieve
17:14and it's like,
17:15whoa,
17:15look at what Joe's doing
17:16with this team,
17:16or they underachieve
17:17and it's like,
17:18yeah,
17:18it's a gap year.
17:19Whatever.
17:19I think if they missed the,
17:20let's say they missed the playoffs.
17:22That's not happening.
17:22If they aren't one of the top 10 teams,
17:25then maybe they'd take a look at it.
17:27Yeah.
17:27What the hell happened?
17:28Right,
17:29because it's like,
17:30oh wow,
17:30you won a championship
17:31with the best roster.
17:32Now you have the worst roster
17:33and you couldn't even make the playoffs.
17:34What good are you?
17:35Especially in the state
17:36of the Eastern Conference.
17:37If you're not in the top 10,
17:38then that is a lot.
17:39So like,
17:39I do,
17:40I mostly agree with you,
17:41Terp,
17:41on this.
17:42I think it's kind of a,
17:43like a bonus year for him.
17:44I think he has a lot of job security,
17:47but I can't,
17:48that's the scenario I could see
17:49where if they really,
17:50really underachieve,
17:50they really are terrible.
17:51What's the point in keeping him?
17:53I mean,
17:53I think that's just kind of
17:54leading into the gap here or there.
17:55I mean,
17:55if the team,
17:56if they're actually going for it
17:57and trying to win
17:57and the team stinks,
17:58then yeah,
17:59maybe they do kind of
18:00examine it there,
18:01but I don't think there's
18:02any reason to think that
18:04Missoula won't be here
18:04for the foreseeable future.
18:06I mean,
18:06he's great standing
18:07with Brad Stevens.
18:08The new ownership loves him.
18:10Like there's,
18:10there's nowhere he's going.
18:12Best guess.
18:12Are they done?
18:13Like in terms of like
18:14Monument,
18:15like Simons and guys like that,
18:16are they done?
18:17I would assume so.
18:18I think this is,
18:18I think Brad Stevens
18:19made that pretty clear yesterday
18:20that there's nothing imminent.
18:21Like this is what they're going to go
18:23into the year with
18:24at least to start.
18:25And they got the deadline
18:26depending on where they're at.
18:27That's where they'll make
18:28additional changes.
18:29But like,
18:29obviously they're going to get
18:30into the second apron,
18:31but that doesn't happen
18:31until the end of the league year.
18:33And then we'll see
18:34what happens with the tax
18:35and that all will happen
18:35at the trade deadline.
18:36But I think right now
18:37it seems like this is the team
18:38that they're going to
18:39enter the season with.
18:39I think Simons is definitely
18:40still a trade candidate.
18:41But other than that,
18:43I think like Simons,
18:44Hauser and Niang
18:44have been the ones
18:45that we continuously hear about.
18:47It doesn't seem like
18:47Hauser's on that conversation anymore.
18:49I think he's out of that conversation
18:50after listening to where
18:51Brad put him in yesterday
18:52when referencing this core.
18:54So it's down to Simons and Niang.
18:56And I just think there's
18:57a lot more upside to keeping him.
18:58Clearly,
18:59if you've been shopping him now
19:00and there's no one biting,
19:02gas up his value.
19:03Know he's going to get
19:03a ton of opportunity
19:05in this offense.
19:06And again,
19:06that can fix his defense as well.
19:08So I think this is what
19:09we're looking at going into
19:10opening night,
19:11at least to start.
19:12Pure hoops with Terp
19:13back by popular demand.
19:14I'll tell you Terp already
19:15at Jones and Keefe on Twitter.
19:17Bob,
19:18having Justin Turpin on the show
19:19is one of the very best things
19:21you goofballs do.
19:22How about that?
19:22Let's go!
19:23Oh, this is like you, Bob.
19:24You know what this actually is?
19:26We're going to dust off
19:27our new segment,
19:28Is It a Compliment?
19:29Oh, nice.
19:29Which is a game
19:30I've always wanted to play
19:31when people text in sometimes
19:32like, hey, you guys love the show.
19:33I'm like,
19:34is it a compliment?
19:34Okay.
19:35So one of the very best things
19:37we do.
