00:00So, yet another row over Labour's stance on gender.
00:04Trans activists have put forward a biological man
00:08to be the woman's officer for the Labour Party's LGBTQ plus group.
00:14The controversial move, backed by the new Trans Rights Alliance,
00:17has drawn criticism from gender-critical Labour members.
00:20You say it breaches party rules and defies a Supreme Court ruling
00:23defining woman as biological sex.
00:27OK, so, I mean, it does seem like maybe that's a slightly backwards step,
00:33given that we'd had some rulings that this stuff
00:36shouldn't really be happening anymore.
00:37Do you know, when we first saw the headline,
00:38I thought they'd actually just picture you
00:40straight down the middle bloke for it.
00:41Right.
00:41Just like, you want a job done.
00:43Get someone in a suit.
00:45Someone who needs a job at the moment, I don't know.
00:48Do you think he was exactly the person for it, Greg?
00:51Could be.
00:51Yeah, what could go wrong?
00:52What could go wrong?
00:53As the women's officer.
00:55Middle-aged women of a certain age.
00:56Middle-aged women of a certain age.
00:59Actually, have we got that Greg Wallace clip?
01:02Can you get it out for me?
01:03On the back of this story.
01:04The one we nearly had before, that.
01:05Greg Wallace about middle-aged women.
01:06Because this is apparently that Labour Party looking for,
01:10what, is it for a women's officer?
01:11Is that right?
01:12For LGBT...
01:13LGBT Labour, I imagine, are looking for a women's officer.
01:16That sounds like.
01:17Right, so LGBT Labour are looking for a new women's officer.
01:22So this is Greg Wallace's pitch for that role.
01:25Handful of middle-class women of a certain age.
01:34That's who he's going to represent.
01:35That's who he's there for, fighting the good fight.
01:37I don't know.
01:38I mean, they don't help themselves, do they,
01:39when they do this kind of stuff?
01:41Do you think, like, you should probably just pick up
01:42an actual biological woman for a women's role, do you think?
01:45Hmm.
01:45It's the first I've heard of it.
01:47And I would say it's probably inappropriate,
01:50because if you are trans,
01:51you can probably talk about the issues trans women may face.
01:55I think if you're going for a women's officer role,
01:58you've got to be a woman from birth.
02:00And I think, therefore, you can talk more broadly
02:02about the issues women face.
02:04That's what I...
02:05Isn't it just mad that we're having this conversation?
02:06Yeah, but I don't think...
02:08I mean, you're being very pliable,
02:09because you say, I think you're...
02:11It is the case.
02:12It's 100% the case.
02:13A man can't ever understand women's issues.
02:16It's just a matter of fact.
02:17We just can't.
02:18That's how it is.
02:19If I was to magically become a woman tomorrow,
02:20I don't think I'd know what it means to be a woman.
02:23And if they're a trans officer
02:24and they put someone in who wasn't trans,
02:26I'm sure they'd complain.
02:27So the logic stands,
02:28and they'd agree with the logic half the time.
02:30Yeah.
02:30And I think with things...
02:31There are facts, right?
02:33So gender is a social construct,
02:36sex isn't, it's biological.
02:37I think the same could be said of race and ethnicity.
02:40And I can only imagine the backlash
02:41if a white person was elected as LGBT Labour
02:45or any other group's race officer, for instance,
02:48and it was a white person,
02:49not somebody that wasn't white.
02:50Exactly.
02:51And I think that's where we have to maybe look
02:53at the facts on this sort of stuff,
02:54at the risk of upsetting
02:57and actually just not representing people.
02:58But it goes across the reality
03:00that the whole alphabet spaghetti
03:02of LGBTQIA plus is too broad.
03:04OK.
03:05OK.
