00:00To our Scotland reporter Tony Maguire, who's got some important guests, Tony Morvish.
00:05Hey, good morning. You know, this is such a huge day for women across Scotland and indeed people right across the UK.
00:12Now I'm joined by Ash Regan, Alba leader of the Scottish Parliament.
00:17Alba, Ash, this is a huge day for you. You've been in this fight for a long time.
00:21Yeah, we're absolutely delighted. So for Women's Scotland to have won in their court case today at the Supreme Court
00:27to find a final definition on what is a woman.
00:31So the biological definition of woman is what has been upheld by the court,
00:35which is obviously a victory for women right across Scotland, but it's also a victory for common sense.
00:41Now, it should never have come to this.
00:42It should never have taken three ordinary Scottish mums to fight the Scottish Government
00:47all the way to the Supreme Court to get an answer on this.
00:50And unfortunately, the Scottish Government has been very much exposed now.
00:53They've been humiliated in court and they must now roll back this ideology right in Scotland.
01:00Now, you were listening right there to the very end.
01:03There was talk of sport, there was talk of women's spaces, there was talk of support groups and, of course, the law.
01:08What is some of the nitty-gritty that you think are some of the biggest wins for this group today?
01:14Well, this has been affecting women, not just in Scotland, obviously across the world we're having similar issues.
01:20But in the UK, it was affecting women in terms of the issues you've described.
01:24So in terms of participation in sport, where inclusion, that means that people who are not women,
01:29were being included in the female category, which obviously isn't fair for women.
01:33We've got examples of women being asked to get change, you know, to be in a position where, you know,
01:38they're obviously vulnerable when men are allowed in the changing rooms.
01:41We've had problems maintaining single-sex spaces.
01:44We have violent male offenders in the women's prison estate.
01:47This has to stop now.
01:49We have to draw a line onto this now and we have to move on.
01:51And the Scottish Government must take this very seriously.
01:54There can be no more prevarication.
01:56They must roll this back through the public sector.
01:59And we now all know that a woman is an adult human female and it has a biological definition.
02:04Now, there's a party going on next door.
02:06I don't know if you can tell.
02:06I don't know when I keep you any longer.
02:08But very, very quickly, how is the Scottish Government feeling right now?
02:11I've no idea how they might be feeling.
02:13To be honest, I haven't got a lot of sympathy for them.
02:16They were warned repeatedly by myself and by many other women that this did interfere with the Equality Act,
02:21that it created a hierarchy of rights and it was the wrong thing to do.
02:24They didn't listen.
02:25They've persisted and persisted and persisted.
02:27In fact, I told very senior members of the Government at the end of last year that they should drop this court case.
02:33And they didn't do it.
02:34So, they only have themselves to blame for this now.
02:36But I hope they take this seriously.
02:38They recognise they've been roundly beaten.
02:40That their magical thinking that is dangerous for women is now finished.
02:44And they need to roll back this ideology.
02:45I should take it.
