Matthew Henson was a pioneering Black American explorer who may have been the very first person to stand at the North Pole on April 6, 1909. Born in 1866 in Maryland, Henson faced hardship early in life, losing both parents when he was young. By age 12, he was working at sea, learning vital navigation and survival skills that would shape his future.
He joined Robert Peary on seven Arctic expeditions over 18 years, becoming a master sled builder, expert dog team handler, and even learning the Inuit language to strengthen collaboration with local communities. On their historic final journey, Henson and four Inuit men reached the North Pole ahead of Peary. Henson later said he was the first to actually stand at the Pole.
Yet, despite his crucial role, Henson received little credit at the time due to racism. History largely ignored his achievements for decades while Peary was celebrated. Only much later in life—and even after his death—did Henson finally receive the recognition he deserved. In an inspiring twist, actress Taraji P. Henson is his direct descendant, carrying on his legacy of strength and determination.
