In April 2023, 16-year-old Bryce Brooks from Atlanta, Georgia, was enjoying spring break with his family in Pensacola, Florida, when he saw four younger children being pulled out to sea by a powerful rip current. Without hesitation—and though he didn’t even know the kids—Bryce ran into the ocean to help. While trying to save them, he became caught in the current himself. Even then, his only concern was the children; he cried out not for his own safety, but for someone to rescue the others. Tragically, Bryce was pulled under and drowned. A close family friend, Charles “Uncle Chuck” Johnson II, also entered the water to try and save Bryce—and lost his life as well. Because of their selfless bravery, all four children survived. Bryce’s legacy lives on through a foundation his family created in his honor, dedicated to teaching youth swimming and CPR skills so that others can be safe in the water. His story is a powerful reminder of courage, compassion, and ultimate sacrifice.
