Sean Gunn chats with THR at the 'Superman' red carpet premiere and discusses what it's like to play a multi-dimensional character like Maxwell Lord and how the billionaire character feels particularly relevant in today's world.

00:00I talked to you about Maxwell Lord before I'd gotten to have this experience,

00:03and I love that the character can be good or evil depending on the arc,

00:05and he's very nuanced.

00:07What are you most excited to play a character that is this many shades of gray

00:10as opposed to a monosyllabic weasel or a too chatty GI robot?

00:14Well, I think that I personally am many shades of gray.

00:19So it's easier for me to play a character that is closer to myself,

00:25I think, than, you know, weasel who's inherently good,

00:28or GI robot who, oh, my God, like, can we give it up?

00:31The movement that's become GI robot, man?

00:33Can we give it up for GI robot?

00:35Yeah.

00:35Like, what a beautiful man.

00:38From spring to now, what he's become.

00:40What a beautiful non-man.

00:42Yeah.

00:42What a man to us.

00:44Yeah.

00:44Were you expecting that reaction?

00:46I love it.

00:47No, I wasn't, but I'm really grateful for it.

00:51Like, it's one of my favorite things that I've ever done in my career

00:55was playing GI robot.

00:57But, like, GI robot, let's be honest, that's the hero that we need.

01:02100%.

01:03The guy who's like, you know what, let's kill all the Nazis.

01:09That face, and that's on billboard, like, that's literally on flags.

01:12Like, you know, that's what we're all about.

01:15Like, I think that we have a responsibility to say no to Nazis as a people.

01:24Sure.

01:24And his programming is accurate, and I appreciate that.

01:27And the delivery of both of those in the same project is really something special.

01:30Well, thank you very much.

01:31And I'm excited to see Maxwell Lord take the world by storm as he evolves.

01:35Yeah.

01:35I love to play Maxwell Lord.

01:38I'm excited.

01:39Like, you know, you get a tiny taste of him, and really it's an introduction into the character,

01:44into the universe, and I'm really, I'm like jazzed to bring more of him into the world.

01:50And we see Stagg, we see him, we see Luther Corps, we see all these billionaires forming.

01:55Do you feel like that's an undercurrent you want to play with in the commentary much the same way as G.I. Robot?

01:58Like, there's a billionaire undercurrent, it feels very topical.

02:01Yeah, absolutely.

02:02I mean, that's what it is, right?

02:03We now live in this world where billionaires think that they can put us under their thumb and dominate us.

02:15And, you know, we have a response to that, and let's see where that goes.

02:20And there's a lot of characters in D.C. and organizations in D.C. that have an answer to that,

02:23so I'm excited to see that, hopefully.

02:25Absolutely.
