00:36and importance of Blessed
00:37Virgin Mary, who is called
00:39the Theotokos, and in Greek
00:41it means the Mother of God.
00:44The first presentation
00:45was called Hail Mary
00:48Full of Grace, with an angelic
00:50salutation, and
00:51the second is called
00:53The Tender-Hearted Loving Mother
00:55of the Merciful God.
00:57And today's sharing
00:59it is called
01:00Most Holy Mother of God
01:03Who Bore the Savior of Our Souls.
01:06Now in
01:07each of the first two sharings
01:09there was a foundation laid
01:11with first Angel Gabriel
01:13presenting the news to Mary
01:14that she would be the Mother of God
01:17and also we covered
01:19the miraculous birth of Mary
01:21herself through her holy parents
01:23Joachim and Anna.
01:25It must be mentioned
01:27and understood as well
01:29that unlike Catholics
01:31Orthodox Christians
01:33do not accept the doctrine
01:35of the Immaculate Conception
01:36but they do believe
01:38Mary lived a sinless life.
01:41The Orthodox Church
01:43rejects the doctrine
01:45of the Immaculate Conception
01:46considering it inconsistent
01:49with Orthodox theology.
01:50Now the Immaculate Conception
01:53is a doctrine
01:55of the Catholic Church
01:56that teaches that Mary
01:58the Mother of Jesus
01:59was conceived without
02:01original sin.
02:03And this means that
02:04from the moment
02:05of her conception
02:07she was preserved
02:09from the stain
02:10of Adam's sin
02:11that according
02:12to Catholic theology
02:14all humans inherit.
02:17And this doctrine
02:18was officially defined
02:20as a dogma
02:21in 1854
02:23by Pope Pius IV.
02:26Just a side note here
02:28many people mistakenly believe
02:30that the Immaculate Conception
02:32refers to Jesus' conception
02:34but it actually refers
02:36to Mary's own conception
02:38in her mother's womb.
02:40The belief is rooted
02:42in the idea
02:43that Mary needed
02:44to be pure and sinless
02:45to be the mother of God.
02:48In Orthodox theology
02:49original sin
02:51is seen as a condition
02:52of mortality
02:53and separation from God
02:55rather than
02:57an inherited guilt
02:58or stain
02:59that must be removed.
03:01Since Orthodox Christians
03:03do not believe
03:04that humanity
03:05inherits guilt
03:07from Adam and Eve's sin
03:08they see no need
03:10for Mary
03:11to be conceived
03:12without original sin.
03:15The Orthodox Church
03:16does believe however
03:17that Mary lived
03:19a sinless life
03:20through her own cooperation
03:22with God's grace.
03:23She is highly venerated
03:25as a theotokist
03:27God-bearer
03:28mother of God
03:30and is considered
03:31the holiest
03:33of all the saints.
03:35Orthodox tradition
03:36holds that she
03:38overcame
03:38every temptation
03:40and remained
03:41and remained
03:41pure in mind
03:42and soul
03:42but she was still
03:44born into the same
03:45fallen world
03:46as all humans.
03:49And we learn
03:50that Mary
03:50willingly
03:51chose not to sin
03:53during the duration
03:54of her life
03:55on the earth
03:56out of pure obedience

04:01Orthodox theology
04:02does not hold

04:18that the Orthodox Church

04:21ancestral sin
04:22refers to the consequences

04:27but not to
04:29inherited guilt.
04:31This is a key
04:32distinction
04:32from the Western
04:34concept
04:35of original sin.
04:37In Orthodox theology
04:39Adam's sin
04:40introduced death
04:41corruption
04:42and a tendency
04:44towards sin
04:45into the human condition.
04:48We inherit
04:49this fallen state
04:51mortality
04:52and a weakened will
04:54but we are not
04:56personally guilty
04:57of Adam's sin.

05:00we are responsible
05:02for our own choices.
05:04As one
05:05Orthodox priest

06:08or courtroom

06:10framework.
06:11So when
06:12Orthodox Church
06:13says the
06:14Western tradition
06:15has more
06:16judicial view
06:18of sin
06:18and salvation
06:19this means
06:20it tends
06:21to frame
06:22things
06:22in terms
06:23of guilt
06:24punishment
06:25and legal
06:26satisfaction
06:27but in
06:29contrast
06:29the Orthodox
06:30tradition
06:31leans more
06:32towards
06:32a therapeutic
06:34or healing
06:35model.
06:36So in
06:38sharing all
06:38of this
06:39dear listener
06:39and followers
06:40it brings us
06:42back to
06:42life of
06:44our most
06:44holy mother
06:45Mary
06:46the mother
06:47of God.
06:48She had
06:49a freedom
06:49from personal
06:51sin.
06:52The Orthodox
06:52Church believes
06:53and teaches
06:54that Mary
06:54as a human
06:55being
06:56had the
06:57ability to
06:58sin
06:58but remained
06:59pure and
06:59obedient
07:00to God's
07:01will.
07:02You see
07:03Jesus Christ
07:04was Mary's
07:05savior too
07:05and as well
07:06as her son.
07:08Orthodox
07:09theology
07:09maintains
07:10that Mary
07:10needed salvation
07:11like all
07:12humans
07:13but she was
07:14saved in a
07:15unique way
07:16and that
07:17by being
07:18sanctified
07:18through her
07:19union
07:20with Jesus
07:20Christ

07:22and yet
07:23her savior
07:24too.

07:27Christian song
07:28written by
07:29two Protestant
07:30men
07:30which became
07:32a modern
07:32Christmas
07:33classic

07:37It was
07:38written in

07:40and the
07:41lyrics go

08:52mother
08:53of the
08:53long
08:54awaited
08:55savior
08:55of our
08:56Lord
08:56Jesus
08:57Christ.
08:58And I
08:58found it
08:59an emotional
09:00take
09:00for a
09:01Christmas
09:02song
09:02and could
09:03not help
09:03but think
09:04that these
09:04two men
09:05who penned
09:06the lyrics
09:06did not
09:08know
09:08that there
09:09was more
09:09history
09:10to Mary's
09:11life
09:11that they
09:12were not
09:12aware of
09:13just like
09:14myself
09:15who for
09:16years remained
09:17in ignorance
09:18about the
09:18many accounts
09:19and eyewitness
09:21accounts of
09:22the life of
09:23Mary the
09:24mother of
09:24God
09:24the Theodocus.
09:26In my
09:27search
09:28regarding this
09:29song I
09:30found that
09:30many theologians
09:31and critics
09:32argue that
09:33this song
09:34Mary did
09:35you know
09:35is more
09:36of an
09:36emotional
09:37reflection
09:37rather than
09:38a strictly
09:39theological
09:40statement.
09:42The song
09:42poses rhetoric
09:43or pretentious
09:44questions about
09:45whether Mary
09:46understood the
09:47full scope
09:48of Jesus'
09:49divine mission.
09:51Pretentious
09:51refers specifically
09:52to language
09:53that is
09:54purposeful
09:55and inflated
09:56in an effort
09:57with showy
09:58theatrical
09:59or stagy
10:00attempt
10:01to move
10:02the listeners.
10:04But now

10:06Christian tradition

27:19where i've
27:19discovered and
27:21have been surprised
27:22by the love
27:22of god in
27:23revealing some
27:24of these things
27:25as truths to
27:26my hungry
27:27heart and
27:28soul as i
27:29have continued
27:30on my journey
27:30into these
27:31missing truths
27:32found in the
27:33ancient faith
27:34one of the
27:35most complete
27:36and powerful
27:36books that
27:37depict the
27:38life of mary
27:39is called the
27:40life of the
27:41virgin mary
27:41the theodocus
27:42is one that i
27:44will take and
27:45share some of
27:46her recorded
27:46conversations and
27:49i highly recommend
27:50this book
27:50for those who
27:52like me knew
27:52that there was
27:53more to mary
27:54the mother of
27:55jesus than was
27:57found in the
27:57king james bible

28:08liturgical services

28:19of the history

28:34eighth century
28:35english monk

35:54god incarnate
35:55mary occupies
35:57a singular
35:59place
35:59in the

36:04annunciation

36:06incarnation

36:08king of
36:08kings
36:09and savior
36:10of the
36:10world
36:11possible
36:12and i
