00:00International development aid is facing what experts call donor fatigue.
00:07Traditional donors, most notably the United States, are showing less commitment to global health initiatives.
00:14In an interview with Euronews, former European Commission President and current Chair of the Vaccine Alliance Gavi,
00:20José Manuel Barroso, weighed in on the issue.
00:23It's true that there is some concern in the development community about the continued support to development in general
00:34and also in the field of public health. Having said that, I believe we are going to overcome that difficulty.
00:40Barroso says that the solution lies in rethinking how development aid is delivered with a sharper focus on results.
00:48And if you want to be honest, we have to recognize that sometimes it's not done the best way.
00:53There are inefficiencies, there are money that sometimes is lost, including in the donor countries.
00:59And I think that this occasion where we see the difficulties that some of our donors have in getting the necessary support from their budgets,
01:10I think it's the ideal moment for us to look at what we can gain in terms of efficiency.
01:16Adding to the uncertainty is a perceived pullback by the United States, especially since the new Trump administration.
01:23It's not just about money, it's about expertise, it's about people on the ground.
01:28And the United States has been a great supporter of international development.
01:34So we hope that that commitment remains, not only the United States, but all the countries.
01:39But funding isn't only under pressure across the Atlantic. In Europe, growing defence budgets spurred by shifting geopolitical realities are creating competition for limited public funds.
01:51So you will see power gap upwards from upper tier城 with different political points after the measures being directly adopted to North наregle.
01:56And so that's the possibility of this process of probably doing this.
01:58So we all see
