00:00I want to read through what we have on this page and then make some observations that are not
00:24on the surface the implications of certain features of the text a man went from the house
00:38of Levi he took the daughter of Levi the woman conceived and gave birth to a son she saw that
00:49he was good and she hid him for three months she could not hide him any longer so she took for him
01:03a wicker basket and smeared it with clay pitch she placed the child into it placed it among the
01:09reeds at the bank of the river his sister stationed herself at a distance to know what would be done
01:18with him yeah that's good Pharaoh's daughter went down to the to bathe by the river and her maidens
01:30walked along the river she saw the basket among the reeds and she sent her maidservant and she
01:37took it she opened it she saw him the child behold the youth was crying she took pity on him and said
01:46this is one of the Hebrew boys his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter shall I go and summon for
01:56you a wet nurse from among the Hebrew women who will nurse the boy for you daughter Pharaoh said go
02:03the girl went and summoned the boy's mother Pharaoh's daughter said to her take this boy and nurse him
02:11for me and I will give your pay so the woman took the boy and raised and nursed him boy grew up and she
02:19brought him to the daughter of Pharaoh and he was a son to her she called his name Moses as she said
02:27for I drew him from the water now before we look at the at the tiny details I think there's something or two
02:38things quite striking here first of all this is the introduction of Moses in the biblical text this is
02:46utterly unlike the introduction of any other hero in the biblical text introduction of a hero is by
02:55virtue of telling us who his parents were usually his parents were great people he tells who his parents
03:03were and where he where he was when he was born where he grew up here the parents are anonymous
03:10text doesn't give us a clue who they are some man is a lady who married the daughter of lady
03:18it's not as if we don't know in the next parasha there'll be a detailed genealogy of Moses
03:24it tells exactly who his parents are and who his older brother and sister are what tribe he's from it does
03:30happen but it happens later when he's first introduced into the text he's introduced anonymously
03:36one of the explanations is that when a person is introduced by virtue of his parents
03:47it's natural to associate his accomplishments with his parents not totally of course everyone
03:53has to make an effort but if you come from great parentage born into an outstanding family
03:58then your outstanding performance is not so unexpected
04:03here the text does not want us to think that way about Moses
04:10yes in fact his parents were great people no question about it
04:14but don't attribute his greatness to his parents
04:18again doesn't mean the parents didn't have any effect
04:21but when you look at Moses greatness the
04:23the fundamental impression you should have is
04:27Moses made great efforts and God crowned his great efforts with success
04:31this is a comment that you can only be made if you're aware of
04:36the biblical style throughout and you see this as different from what's going on elsewhere
04:41just looking on the page here and analyzing the words won't get you this
04:44secondly the entire page describes feminine influence
04:53the father is there for only one thing to impregnate the mother
04:58after that plays absolutely no role
05:02there's his mother his sister and the daughter of Pharaoh
05:06the picture of Moses is rooted in a feminine origin
05:13and not just an origin
05:18he gets his name
05:20from the daughter of Pharaoh
05:22let me ask you a question
05:26do you think that parents
05:28Moses' parents let's say his father
05:30gave him a name
05:31of course they did
05:32and the oral tradition preserves several names that he had
05:35there's nine people out of ten
05:40even with black velvet yarmulkes
05:42they won't have a clue what his Jewish names were
05:45it's the name that the daughter of Pharaoh gives him
05:49that's stuck
05:50she saves his life
05:54and she gives him his name
05:56maybe now you understand
06:03why
06:04the rabbi's comment
06:06that she was going down
06:08to bathe in the river
06:09she was actually
06:12immersing herself
06:13as an act of conversion
06:16to Judaism
06:17after all
06:21do I really mean she was going down
06:23to take a bath
06:23do I need to know that
06:24why does the text bother to tell me that
06:27if he's put at the side of the river
06:29say
06:30she went down to the river
06:32and saw him
06:33or she was at the river
06:34and saw him
06:35do I really need to know
06:36that she was going to wash
06:37but when you look at her
06:40through the eyes
06:40of the future
06:41she's saving
06:42the life of
06:44in certain sense
06:45the greatest Jew
06:46that ever lived
06:46and she's giving him his name
06:49should that be
06:51the position of
06:52simply
06:53one of the many
06:55corrupt
06:56idol worshipping
06:57princesses in the palace
06:59so you can see
07:02where the vijrash is coming from
07:03to say such a thing
07:05at any rate
07:09I've asked many people
07:10about this
07:10what am I supposed to learn
07:12from the fact
07:13that
07:14the text here
07:15describes
07:16Moses
07:17so to speak
07:18roots
07:19in a feminine origin
07:20and I have got no answer
07:22no one's able to answer me
07:23but I'm
07:24convinced
07:24that it's
07:25significant
07:25so I'm mentioning it to you
07:27as something that the text
07:28sort of puts on display
07:30and if you ask people about it
07:31you get an answer
07:32please
07:33share it with me
07:35and something else
07:40in what I just said
07:40another association
07:42an Egyptian princess
07:44saves his life
07:46and gives him his name
07:47we are taught a lot
07:51about
07:51the uniqueness
07:52of the Jewish people
07:53Jewish nation
07:55the souls of the Jewish people
07:58we're taught a lot about that
07:59we're the chosen people
08:00it has to be stressed
08:03for a balanced picture
08:05that a great deal
08:07of what we have
08:07we have from other people
08:08we have it because
08:11others grafted onto us
08:13first of all
08:14Abraham was himself
08:15a convert to
08:17correct belief
08:20and if you follow
08:22Maimonides
08:22description
08:24Abraham achieved
08:27his
08:28correct belief
08:29in God
08:29when he was
08:2940 years old
08:31and in the interim
08:32he worshipped
08:33idols with his own hands
08:34he offered
08:35sacrifices to idols
08:36with his own hands
08:37he was a real
08:39Baalchuk
08:39and then
08:42here
08:46the Egyptian princess
08:50saves Moses' life
08:51he gives him his name
08:52and when they leave
08:53Egypt
08:54they leave
08:54Egypt with great wealth
08:55including
08:56trees
08:57for wood
08:59that Jacob
09:00planted
09:00when he went down
09:01so they would have
09:02wood with which
09:03to build
09:03the tabernacle
09:04trees that grew
09:06in Egypt
09:07and the Egyptian
09:09gold
09:09and silver
09:10and jewels
09:11to use
09:13for the
09:14trappings
09:15of the tabernacle
09:16and when Solomon
09:19built the temple
09:19in Jerusalem
09:21the king of Lebanon
09:22was his confederate
09:24they worked together
09:25and the king of Lebanon
09:26provided raw materials
09:27and artisans
09:28the fact that we are
09:31different
09:31the fact that we are
09:32unique
09:33the fact that we are
09:33chosen
09:34does not mean that
09:35we are disconnected
09:36from the world
09:37we are chosen
09:38to be connected
09:39in a particular way
09:40to be aligned
09:42into the nations
09:43to teach the world
09:44to elevate the world
09:45and that shows
09:47in the very fact
09:48of our origins
09:49that we
09:50take our position
09:52in the world
09:52through the gifts
09:53of others
09:54not to mention
09:54great converts
09:57so for example
09:59the temple
10:00in Jerusalem
10:00was a place
10:02where all
10:03people
10:03were invited
10:05to offer sacrifices
10:06even people
10:08who were idol
10:09worshippers
10:09were invited
10:10to offer sacrifices
10:11why would they do that?
10:13because
10:14idol worship
10:14was
10:15an open
10:17ideology
10:18the fact that
10:19you live in
10:20Assyria
10:21and pledge
10:21allegiance to Assyrians
10:22gods
10:22doesn't mean that
10:23you discount
10:24the gods
10:25of other people
10:25you could
10:29acknowledge
10:29that the Jews
10:30have a god
10:30just not
10:31acknowledge him
10:32as the only god
10:32and even so
10:33if he sends
10:34a sacrifice
10:37to the temple
10:37it should be accepted
10:39and when Solomon
10:41dedicates the temple
10:42he says
10:42he prays to God
10:43if a non-Jew
10:44will come
10:45and offer a sacrifice
10:46and make a request
10:48of you
10:48answer him
10:49answer him positively
10:51so the fact
10:53that we are chosen
10:54does not mean
10:55we are separate
10:56so the very fact
10:58that at the very origin
11:00of
11:00one of the greatest
11:02Jews of history
11:03and the Jew
11:03who took us out of Egypt
11:04is
11:07the Egyptian princess
11:08is not
11:08terrific
11:09okay
11:11that's general background
11:12now let's go back
11:13to beginning chapter 2
11:13and take a look
11:14at the details
11:15a woman
11:17of the house
11:17of Levi
11:18took a daughter
11:18of Levi
11:19the woman conceived
11:20gave birth to a son
11:21she saw
11:25that he was good
11:26and she hid him
11:27for three months
11:28now I hope
11:29you appreciate
11:30I think it's really
11:33on the surface
11:33but
11:34in any text
11:36it will be true
11:36but
11:37here
11:39in the Torah
11:40it's always that
11:41when you say
11:41A happened
11:42then B happened
11:42then C happened
11:43it's not just
11:44chronology
11:44it means that
11:46A
11:46was relevant to B
11:48either caused to B
11:49or was a condition
11:50under which B happened
11:51gave significance to B
11:52and so forth
11:54and so
11:54she saw that he was good
11:56and she hid him
11:57for three months
11:57what does that
11:59what could that mean
12:00what could that possibly mean
12:02she saw he was good
12:03and then
12:04she hid him for three months
12:05and then she couldn't
12:05hide him anymore
12:06this is one of the places
12:08in
12:08narrative
12:10where the text
12:11cannot stand on its own
12:12it is a
12:13very commonly
12:14remarked fact
12:15that when you talk
12:16about the legal sections
12:17of the Torah
12:17they can't stand
12:18on their own
12:19you can't imagine
12:20anybody reading the laws
12:21and living by them
12:21because there are
12:22too many undefined terms
12:24too many contingencies
12:25of life
12:26that are not
12:26accounted for
12:28in the laws
12:29but the same thing
12:30is true in the narratives
12:31pay careful attention
12:33in the narratives
12:33there are
12:33sequences that just
12:35can't be understood
12:36and that's another
12:37indication
12:38that when the text
12:39came into existence
12:40there was an oral tradition
12:42accompanying it
12:44so he could make sense
12:45out of it
12:46hard to imagine
12:47that a text
12:48was created
12:48and created
12:51for a group
12:51of readers
12:52and created in such a way
12:53that the readers
12:54can't understand it
12:55so here the oral tradition
12:58fills in the following
12:59there was a decree
13:00that newborn male children
13:03should be killed
13:04that it says
13:05at the top of the page
13:06because
13:07Pharaoh's
13:08magicians
13:10had a prediction
13:11that the savior
13:13of the Jewish people
13:13is going to be born
13:14and of course
13:15it was taken for granted
13:16against contemporary
13:18social mores
13:18that the savior
13:19would be male
13:20not female
13:20so they said
13:22kill all the male
13:23children that are going
13:24to be born
13:24how did they carry this out
13:26when a woman
13:27Jewish woman
13:28showed signs
13:29of pregnancy
13:30they kept note
13:32and six months later
13:35they came
13:35because a woman
13:36usually shows signs
13:37of pregnancy
13:37around the end
13:38of the third month
13:39six months later
13:40they came back
13:40to check
13:41what happened
13:42to that baby
13:42to check
13:44if it was a boy
13:44or a gross
13:45or they could kill it
13:45if it's a boy
13:46but she gave birth
13:49three months early
13:50it's a preemie
13:51so she had three months
13:55of course
13:55she only has three months
13:57if he doesn't cry
13:57if he cries
13:59the neighbors
14:00are going to hear it
14:00and it'll be out
14:01right away
14:01no but she saw
14:02he was good
14:03he didn't cry
14:05so she said
14:05I can hide it
14:06for three months
14:07until the Egyptian
14:08overseers
14:09with their calendars
14:10will come by
14:11to ask
14:12what happened
14:12to the baby
14:13so I have three months
14:14but after three months
14:16she couldn't hide him anymore
14:16and that's why
14:17she put him in the vest
14:18that explains
14:21the details
14:22of the sequence
14:23without some explanation
14:24the details
14:26are just
14:26just without sense
14:29wouldn't she then
14:32have to explain
14:33where the baby was
14:34well
14:38if they'll come back
14:39and they'll say
14:40that there was
14:40a miscarriage
14:41and the baby
14:41was disposed of
14:42it's hard to hide
14:44a living baby
14:45she can always say that
14:47now
14:50how did
14:51the daughter
14:52of Pharaoh
14:52know
14:53that this is
14:54one of the Hebrew boys
14:55if it's circumcision
15:02which some do say
15:04then you will have
15:05to imagine that
15:06when she takes him
15:07into the palace
15:08no one ever sees him
15:10naked
15:10because they'll see that
15:13they'll put
15:13two and two together
15:14it's not
15:15too unreasonable
15:16how old
15:17do you think
15:18he was
15:18when his mother
15:20brought him
15:21to the daughter
15:22of Pharaoh
15:22to be taken over
15:25by her
15:26those times
15:27it was customary
15:28to nurse
15:29a baby
15:30for two to
15:31two and a half years
15:32so you can imagine
15:34he's two and a half years old
15:35and he's
15:36taller trained
15:36and he's
15:38a functioning kid
15:39this also explains
15:43how it is
15:44that
15:44he had a very strong
15:45Jewish identity
15:46which I will prove
15:47on the next page
15:48because
15:49he spent
15:50two and a half years
15:51with his parents
15:52with his mother
15:53and with his father
15:54not being mentioned
15:55but father
15:56and when you will
15:57have children
15:57you will find out
15:58that
15:58a two and a half year old
16:00can understand
16:01quite a bit
16:02and certainly
16:04is used to certain things
16:06and when that's
16:06an average
16:06two and a half year old
16:07you're talking about
16:09someone like Moses
16:10who had extraordinary
16:10capabilities
16:11so we can
16:12understand
16:13that
16:14Jewish identity
16:14was planted
16:16in him
16:17also
16:21the text
16:21is not
16:22without irony
16:22you're
16:24risking
16:25death
16:26the Egyptians
16:27want to kill
16:28newborn boys
16:29you put them
16:29at the edge
16:30of the river
16:30who knows
16:31what's going
16:31to happen to him
16:31he gets returned
16:33to his mother
16:33who nurses him
16:35for two and a half years
16:36for pay
16:36she gets paid
16:37to nurse her own son
16:39so the
16:40application
16:42of divine providence
16:43here is
16:44dripped in irony
16:47and that happens
16:48very often
16:48the Tanakh
16:50stresses
16:50ironical events
16:51where evil people
16:53make plans
16:54and the very plans
16:55that they make
16:55trap them
16:56and destroy them
16:57and here
16:58the irony in it
16:59is very obvious
17:01okay
17:02together so far
17:03okay
17:04next page
17:04it happened
17:05in those days
17:06that Moses
17:07grew up
17:08and went out
17:10to his brethren
17:11and observed
17:13their burdens
17:14and he saw
17:15an Egyptian man
17:16striking a Hebrew man
17:17of his brethren
17:18what phrase
17:21in that
17:22verse
17:22is given
17:24heavy emphasis
17:25brethren
17:27twice
17:28simply twice
17:30in one sentence
17:31it is not
17:32the text is not
17:33assuming that
17:33you got
17:34you know
17:34lost
17:35between the first half
17:36and the second half
17:37and forgot
17:37but it's stressing
17:39he's going out
17:40to see
17:41other Jews
17:42and for him
17:43they are his brethren
17:44he's not an Egyptian
17:47he's not a descendant
17:49of Pharaoh
17:49he's not an adopted
17:50child of Pharaoh
17:51he's a Jew
17:52that's his identity
17:53not only that
17:55but there's a emphasis
17:55in the Hebrew
17:56which you don't have
17:57in the English
17:58where it says
17:59observe their burdens
18:05in the Hebrew
18:06if you look
18:07in the Hebrew
18:08the top line
18:08the last word
18:09bayar means
18:11he observed
18:11and then it says
18:12be
18:13sevlosam
18:15not
18:16es
18:16sevlosam
18:18or sevlosam
18:19without any
18:20qualification
18:20but be
18:21be means he
18:22empathized
18:23he took it upon
18:24himself
18:25when he saw it
18:27he felt their pain
18:28so the text
18:31is really
18:31stressing the fact
18:33that his identity
18:34is a Jewish identity
18:35and what does he see
18:37he sees an Egyptian
18:38beating a Jew
18:38he turned this way
18:41and that
18:41and saw there was
18:42no man
18:42so he struck down
18:44the Egyptian
18:45and hit him
18:45in the sand
18:46now
18:48I want to
18:50take you through
18:51a set of reasoning
18:52in a certain sense
18:54a set of reasoning
18:55is misleading
18:55so I'm going to
18:56go through it
18:56and I was telling you
18:57at the outset
18:58there's something
18:58misleading about it
18:59and I'm going to
19:00correct that
19:01when I get to the end
19:02but I'm going to
19:04read the text
19:04the way a naive
19:05simplistic reader
19:07would read it
19:09again
19:10it's not going to be
19:11correct in the end
19:12but I want to
19:13show you a progression
19:14down the surface
19:16and then we'll go back
19:16and apply the end
19:19to the beginning
19:20what
19:21in the simplest
19:23possible way
19:25could you say
19:26is the motivation
19:26that Moses has
19:27when he kills
19:28the Egyptians
19:28what principle
19:31would lie behind it
19:33could it possibly
19:35be a
19:36more limited
19:37and less
19:38august
19:39less abstract
19:40principle
19:41than that
19:41what do you say
19:46I can't hear you
19:48stopping abuse
19:51but this isn't
19:52just any old abuse
19:54this is a
19:56non-Jew
19:56beating a Jew
19:58couldn't this be
20:01you don't mess
20:02with my people
20:03you don't mess
20:05with my people
20:05I don't tolerate
20:07anybody
20:07hurting my people
20:10the verse that
20:11we talked about
20:12the first verse
20:13stressed the fact
20:14that they're his
20:15brethren
20:15he identifies with them
20:17I'm not going to
20:18tolerate a non-Jew
20:19victimizing a Jew
20:21if you want it
20:24to be
20:24as simplistic
20:26and narrow-minded
20:27about it as possible
20:28you could interpret
20:29this event
20:29that way
20:30if you do that
20:33then you get
20:34a beautiful progression
20:35watch what happens
20:36next
20:36by the way
20:36I should remind you
20:37the English paragraphs
20:39are totally artificial
20:39there are no paragraph
20:41breaks here
20:41look at the Hebrew
20:42it's all one
20:43solid block of text
20:44he went out
20:47the next day
20:47and behold
20:48two Hebrew men
20:50were fighting
20:51he said to the
20:53wicked one
20:54why would you
20:54strike your fellow
20:55he replied
20:58to appointed Jews
20:58a dignitaria
20:59judge over us
21:00opposed to murdering
21:01like he murdered
21:01the Egyptian
21:02opposed to frightened
21:03etc
21:04what's he doing here
21:05here he's intervening
21:07when it's Jew
21:09against Jew
21:10you can't explain
21:11this as
21:12partisanship
21:13don't mess with
21:15my people
21:15we're special
21:17here's interfering
21:18between two Jews
21:19this is closer
21:21to what you said
21:22at the beginning
21:23to the idea
21:24of justice
21:24this is closer
21:26more general
21:27than just
21:28I'm protecting
21:29my people
21:29against foreign people
21:30we'll get to
21:33the third incident
21:33in a minute
21:33but I want to point out
21:34a couple of
21:35details here
21:36he went out
21:37the next day
21:38behold
21:38two Hebrew men
21:39were fighting
21:40he said to the
21:41wicked one
21:42why
21:45would you
21:47now in the Hebrew
21:49it could be
21:50very well translated
21:51as why will you
21:52why will you
22:01strike your fellow
22:02anything strike you
22:05as
22:05as
22:05I shouldn't say strike
22:06anything occur to you
22:08that's
22:09interesting
22:10you read it
22:10very carefully
22:11he said
22:12to the wicked one
22:14why will you
22:15strike your fellow
22:16some pitch
22:18yeah
22:19it's indicating what
22:21that's right
22:24it indicates
22:25that he didn't
22:25hit him yet
22:26he says
22:27why will you
22:28strike your fellow
22:30then what's
22:31significant
22:31he calls him
22:33wicked
22:35it means
22:36if you
22:37threaten
22:37to hit
22:38you're already
22:38wicked
22:39you don't have to
22:40wait till
22:41the guy
22:41he hits
22:42he's a wicked
22:42person
22:42because he
22:43threatened
22:43to hit
22:44he raised
22:44his hand
22:45that already
22:46makes him
22:46wicked
22:47and of course
22:50you get a Jewish
22:50answer
22:51who are you
22:52to tell us
22:52what to do
22:53you know
22:53don't push me
22:55around
22:55that's been
22:57the same
22:57from
22:58Moses time
23:00until the
23:00contemporary
23:01Talibid
23:02cab driver
23:03who appoints
23:05a dignitary
23:05you're going
23:06to murder me
23:06like you
23:06murdered the
23:07Egyptian
23:07so now
23:08even though
23:09Moses tried
23:11to make sure
23:12that there was
23:12nobody observing
23:13him when he
23:13killed the
23:14Egyptian
23:15but obviously
23:15the story
23:16is known
23:16Moses was
23:18frightened
23:19that he thought
23:19indeed the
23:20matter was
23:20known
23:20Pharaoh heard
23:21about the
23:22matter
23:22and sought
23:22to kill
23:22Moses
23:23he grew up
23:24in the
23:24palace
23:25my daughter
23:25saved your
23:26life
23:26so what
23:27we don't
23:28tolerate
23:28any
23:29breaches
23:29in the
23:30rules
23:30Moses fled
23:32before Pharaoh
23:32and settled
23:33the land
23:33of Midian
23:34he sat
23:34by a
23:34well
23:34okay
23:38now we
23:39come to
23:39incident
23:39number
23:40three
23:40the
23:41minister
23:42of
23:42Midian
23:42had
23:42seven
23:43daughters
23:43they
23:44came
23:44and drew
23:45water
23:45and filled
23:45up the
23:46troughs
23:46to water
23:47the father's
23:47sheep
23:48the shepherds
23:49came and
23:49drove them
23:50away
23:50Moses
23:51got up
23:52and saved
23:52them
23:52and watered
23:53the sheep
23:54what's
23:58this
23:58this
24:02is an
24:02injustice
24:03in a
24:03foreign
24:03nation
24:04it has
24:05nothing
24:05to do
24:06with him
24:06he's a
24:07stranger
24:08there
24:08Moses
24:10can't
24:10tolerate
24:11injustice
24:12anywhere
24:12even
24:14when he's
24:14a stranger
24:15he's not
24:15responsible
24:16for it
24:16not even
24:18indirectly
24:18responsible
24:19because
24:19it's
24:19his
24:20people
24:20this
24:23now
24:24gives
24:24you
24:24insight
24:25into
24:25the
24:25character
24:26that
24:26Moses
24:26has
24:27and
24:28we
24:29will
24:30say
24:30that
24:30that
24:31motivated
24:31him
24:32from the
24:32very
24:32beginning
24:32that
24:33the
24:33initial
24:34superficial
24:36narrow
24:37way of
24:37reading
24:37killing
24:38the
24:38Egyptians
24:38beating
24:38the
24:39Jew
24:39was
24:39not
24:40partisan
24:40not
24:42just
24:42don't
24:43mess
24:43with
24:43my
24:43people
24:43but
24:44Moses
24:45was
24:45against
24:45injustice
24:46across
24:46the
24:46board
24:46even
24:48to
24:48the
24:49extent
24:49here
24:50of
24:51say
24:52now
24:52I
24:52don't
24:52know
24:52how
24:53he
24:53could
24:53do
24:53this
24:53there
24:55are
24:55many
24:55shepherds
24:55Moses
24:56is

25:05and
25:07he
25:07does
25:08it
25:08now
25:11given
25:13what I
25:13just
25:13told you
25:14about
25:14the
25:14development
25:14of
25:15the
25:15stories
25:15and

25:22even
25:22for
25:22non-Jews
25:23it's
25:24extremely
25:25indicative
25:26that
25:27there's
25:27a
25:27midrash
25:28that
25:28asks
25:28why

25:33the
25:33midrash
25:34tells
25:34a story
25:34which
25:34isn't
25:35in the
25:35text
25:35at
25:35all
25:36he

26:25now
26:26let's
26:26just

26:51there's
26:53a good
26:53reason
26:53and
26:53an
26:53excellent
26:54reason
26:54what

29:23we know

29:34something

29:42also
29:43so the

34:50where
34:50he
34:50already
34:50is
34:51right
34:52that's
34:52the
34:52point
34:53that I'm
34:53looking
34:53for
34:54where
34:54he
34:54is
34:55is
34:55already
34:55holy
34:55take
34:56off
34:56your

34:56where
34:56you
34:56are
34:57standing
34:57it's
34:58already
34:58holy
34:59ground
34:59and
34:59still
35:00you
35:00can't
35:01come
35:01any
35:01closer
35:01you
35:04can't
35:04come
35:04any
35:04closer
35:05not
35:06everywhere
35:07in the
35:07world
35:07you have
35:07to take
35:08off
35:08your
35:08shoes
35:08so we
35:10already
35:10now have
35:11three
35:11environments
35:12the whole
35:13of the
35:13world
35:14where you
35:14wear your
35:14shoes
35:14where you're
35:16standing
35:16now
35:17that's
35:17holy
35:17ground
35:18and
35:20where
35:20the
35:20bush
35:21is
35:21burning
35:21that way
35:22you cannot
35:22come
35:23close
35:23to
35:23now
35:24this
35:24is
35:24a
35:25picture
35:25of the
35:26whole
35:27of the
35:27creation
35:27the world
35:28there are
35:28things that
35:29are ordinary
35:29there are
35:30things that
35:30are elevated
35:31and sanctified
35:32that require
35:32a special
35:33response
35:34from you
35:34to recognize
35:35their uniqueness
35:36and then there are
35:38things that are
35:39beyond you
35:39entirely
35:39that's true
35:42for every human
35:42being
35:42we're talking
35:43to Moses
35:43now
35:44talking to
35:45Moses
35:46now
35:47there are
35:49the three
35:50gradations
35:50in the
35:51whole
35:52of the
35:52creation
35:52so later
35:53when Moses
35:53asked to
35:54see God's
35:55glory
35:56meaning
35:56according to
35:57many
35:57his essence
35:58and God
35:59says to
35:59him
35:59no
36:01no
36:02no
36:03no man
36:05can see
36:06me
36:06and live
36:06not even
36:07you
36:07in a way
36:09that's a
36:09repeat of
36:09this
36:10you're on
36:13Mount Sinai
36:14you'll get
36:14certain things
36:15but this
36:16you can't
36:16get
36:16this
36:17you can't
36:17get
36:17what's the
36:20significance
36:21of taking
36:22a
36:22reshud
36:23it's a gigantic
36:30subject
36:30I should tell
36:31you
36:31that
36:31in the
36:32temple
36:32the service
36:34that the
36:34kohanim
36:35did was
36:35done barefoot
36:35had to be
36:37done barefoot
36:37no separation
36:39between themselves
36:40and the ground
36:40the ground
36:41is holy ground
36:42there should be
36:42no separation
36:43shoes
36:49separate you
36:51from the ground
36:52they separate you
36:53from the ground
36:53taking off your shoes
36:56means that you
36:58are privileged
37:00to be able to stand
37:02on the holy ground
37:03without a separation
37:04that's
37:07I mean
37:09you can understand
37:11a little bit
37:12now why
37:12the Muslims
37:13in their place
37:15of worship
37:15they take off
37:16their shoes
37:16they have this text
37:19also
37:19and they
37:19they know the
37:20laws of the
37:20kohanim
37:21kohanim
37:22do their service
37:23without this
37:23they don't have
37:24respect to
37:24only kohanim
37:25and that's
37:28just
37:28this
37:29okay
37:32so now
37:33next page
37:35he said
37:38Hashem said
37:39I am the
37:40God of your
37:41father
37:41the God of
37:41Abraham
37:42the God of
37:42Isaac
37:42and the God
37:43of Jacob
37:43Moses hid his
37:45face
37:45for he was
37:45afraid
37:46to gaze
37:46toward God
37:47because up
37:49until now
37:49he doesn't
37:50know who
37:50he's speaking
37:50to
37:50when it
37:53says
37:53by the way
37:55I want to
37:56go back
37:56and pick
37:56this up
37:57which I
37:57skipped
37:57it before
37:58when it
38:01says in
38:01verse 2
38:02an angel
38:03of Hashem
38:03appeared to
38:04him in a
38:04blaze of
38:05fire from
38:05the bush
38:06does he
38:08perceive
38:09that it's
38:10an angel
38:11it's not
38:12obvious
38:13the text
38:15could be
38:15telling us
38:16what's really
38:17there is an
38:17angel
38:17what's visible
38:20is a
38:21blaze
38:21of fire
38:21and all
38:24he can
38:24see is a
38:24blaze
38:24of fire
38:25it's not
38:26clear
38:26now
38:27in 4
38:29when it
38:29says
38:30God called
38:31out for him
38:31from the bush
38:31and said
38:32Moses
38:32Moses
38:33does Moses
38:34know who's
38:34speaking
38:35it's not
38:37obvious
38:38the text
38:39only tells
38:39us
38:39that God
38:40called out
38:40to him
38:41it was
38:42not
38:42obvious
38:43Ramchal
38:44in the way
38:46of God
38:47where he
38:47discusses
38:47prophecies
38:48says no
38:48he didn't
38:49know
38:49just like
38:52Samuel
38:53who was a
38:54child
38:54in the
38:55temple
38:55under the
38:56care of
38:56Eli the
38:57high priest
38:57and God
38:58calls to him
38:59when he's
39:00lying on his
39:01bed at night
39:01and he runs
39:02to Eli and
39:03says I'm
39:04here to do
39:04whatever you want
39:05Eli says I
39:05didn't call you
39:06listen next
39:12time
39:12ask who it
39:14is
39:14understand that
39:15it's God
39:15calling you
39:16but he didn't
39:16know
39:16he's called
39:17twice and
39:17didn't know
39:18these are
39:19initiations
39:20into prophecy
39:21and this
39:21first stage
39:22of initiation
39:23could be
39:23where the
39:23prophet
39:24doesn't know
39:24what's
39:25happening
39:25and the
39:26proof of
39:27it is
39:27that
39:28in 303
39:29God identifies
39:31himself
39:31says I
39:32am the
39:33God of
39:33your father
39:33and now
39:34Moses hides
39:35his face
39:35that means
39:36before he
39:36did not
39:36know that
39:37it was
39:37God
39:37only now
39:39does he
39:39understand
39:40that
39:40and he
39:41was afraid
39:42to gaze
39:42towards God
39:43now here
39:44I can't
39:44explain this
39:44I'm just
39:45telling this
39:45to you
39:45that you
39:45should know
39:46there's a
39:47difference
39:47of opinion
39:47if I'm
39:48not mistaken
39:48it even
39:49goes back
39:49to the
39:49Talmud
39:50whether
39:51he did
39:52here was
39:52correct
39:53or
39:53incorrect
39:53when I
39:55first read
39:56it
39:56and the
39:56tenth time
39:57I read
39:57it
39:57and the
39:57hundredth
39:58time
39:58I read
39:58it
39:58I assumed
39:59of course
39:59no one
40:00wants to
40:01look at
40:01God
40:01of course
40:02I'm not
40:02qualified
40:02to look
40:03at God
40:03and he
40:03hid his
40:04gaze
40:04and there
40:05are those
40:05who
40:05credited
40:06for that
40:06and then
40:07they say
40:08later
40:08he gazes
40:10at God's
40:11Tzmuna
40:11whatever that
40:13is
40:13he got
40:14that as
40:15a reward
40:15but others
40:17say
40:17on the
40:17contrary
40:18he wasn't
40:19told not
40:20to look
40:20and if
40:21God
40:22appeared
40:22to him
40:22and said
40:23who he
40:23is
40:23he was
40:23qualified
40:24to look
40:24and had
40:26he looked
40:26later
40:27when he
40:27asked
40:27to be
40:28shown
40:28God's
40:28glory
40:29he would
40:30have been
40:30shown
40:30but because
40:31he didn't
40:32take the
40:32opportunity
40:33here
40:33it was
40:34hidden
40:34from him
40:34there
40:34so
40:35I don't
40:37know
40:37I'm just
40:37telling you
40:38that
40:38the fact
40:39that he
40:39didn't
40:40look
40:40doesn't
40:40automatically
40:41make it
40:41right
40:50he
40:53he
40:55he
41:07he
41:10he
41:11he
