00:00What's up fellow journeyers? You're in for a treat today. I know Marissa is excited.
00:04Like, have you ever seen the inside of a double-decker bus remodeled to live in as an RV?
00:10Like, living in it. Living in a double-decker bus with a rooftop with six kids.
00:17I'm pumped to see inside of this because I've never seen this before.
00:21I've never seen anyone living and traveling in a double-decker bus.
00:25Okay, I need a door that does this. Even the entrance is cool.
00:29Well, hey friends, come on in.
00:32Hey, I'm pumped.
00:33Pardon anything that is a mess. We live here.
00:36And you have six kids.
00:40So me and my wife and our six kids. That's how we roll.
00:45Yep, hence why you need two levels.
00:47Two levels.
00:47Hey, that's unique.
00:49And we're short, right? So this is fine for me.
00:51Okay.
00:52You might have to duck. You might have to duck.
00:55But for me, I mean, I'm good.
00:58This is our driver's area slash my office.
01:02This is where I do my work and drive.
01:03Can I sit here?
01:04Sure.
01:04Okay.
01:05It's like super low to the ground.
01:06Okay.
01:07It actually sits lower than the transit van that we pull behind.
01:11Wow.
01:11Does she drive behind you or do you tow it?
01:14We tow the van.
01:14Okay.
01:15Yep.
01:15All right.
01:15Everybody rides in here.
01:17Everybody rides in here.
01:18Wow.
01:18That's right.
01:19Are all these, this height, this is pretty much if you get a double-decker, that's what you're
01:22going to get.
01:22Is this height?
01:23Yep.
01:23Pretty much.
01:23This is, this is it, right?
01:25In order to make the 13.6 legal limits in the U.S., this is going to be.
01:29Okay.
01:30So same height as our fifth wheel.
01:31Would you drive this?
01:33It doesn't seem intimidating as long as you don't know what's around you as you're driving,
01:36I guess.
01:37Because the ceiling, you don't know what's up above.
01:39No, it's definitely way, does the air bring it up at all once you start going?
01:42Yeah, about three and a half inches.
01:43But still not nearly as much as a Class A didn't seem like.
01:45No, not near as high as a Class A.
01:47Okay.
01:47Yeah, it doesn't seem as intimidating because you're not as high off the ground.
01:49I haven't seen all these buttons.
01:51Look at all these buttons.
01:53What is all?
01:54I love, and I love, it's physical.
01:56Everything's physical buttons.
01:57Oh, man.
01:58What year is this?
01:59This is a 2009.
02:00Okay.
02:00Vanhul TD 925 Astro Mega Double Decker.
02:04Wow, you got it all in the way.
02:05That's impressive.
02:05It is, yeah.
02:06If you say that, people get out of the way.
02:07Yeah, yeah, well, I don't like my horn people in the way.
02:11How many miles?
02:12The bus itself has about 220,000 miles on it.
02:16The engine has about 20,000 miles on it.
02:18Okay, this is super cool.
02:19It's good.
02:20We cruise along at about 69 miles an hour usually, and we feel like that's a pretty comfortable
02:25place to be.
02:25What is the height?
02:26I'm 5'9", so what is this?
02:28So, yeah, so I'm 5'9", also, and so we're riding about 5'9", and a half, like, getting 5'9",
02:34and a half-ish in here.
02:35I could, uh, yeah, I'm 5'10".
02:37Oh, yeah.
02:38So, yeah.
02:39Now, upstairs is about an inch shorter.
02:40Okay.
02:41Okay.
02:42So, that's your warning there.
02:43Let's do it.
02:44We come back this way now.
02:45It is narrow.
02:46Some people always say it's like super narrow.
02:47Well, that's because we've got these wheel wells.
02:49We don't have an axle that goes all the way through.
02:51We just have these wheel wells for our independent tires.
02:54This was kind of going to be like a, just a wasted space.
02:57We knew we needed a fridge and freezer, so we put fridge and freezer.
03:00Fridge on one side, freezer on the other.
03:02I don't know if anybody cares to see what's in our fridge and freezer, but that's the fridge.
03:07Yeah.
03:08They really do live here.
03:09There really is stuff in these.
03:10That's a lot of freezer space.
03:12Wow.
03:13Yeah.
03:14So, they're both the same size and they're pretty big.
03:16That's awesome.
03:17Family of eight, and that works for us.
03:19Gotta eat.
03:20That's right.
03:21Gotta eat.
03:22Gotta eat.
03:23This is our kitchen.
03:24Big butcher block countertop over here.
03:25Like, prepped area and just all the storage for anything underneath it.
03:29You just turned the stove on, or the oven there with the butt.
03:33Don't worry.
03:34So, my oldest daughter, she does it all the time because she stands and eats her cereal
03:37in the morning.
03:38She's always turning on the oven.
03:39So, you have an oven, you have...
03:41Yep.
03:42Induction stove, two burner.
03:43And, you know, we get a lot of questions like, how do we get away with two burners with
03:48eight people?
03:49A lot of people are used to seeing the five burner stoves in a, you know, a home.
03:54I'm the six of eight kids.
03:55My wife's the six of seven kids.
03:56Five burners on a stove.
03:57My mom never used all five of them, except on Thanksgiving, right?
04:00Other than that, two of those, two of those burners were covered up by yesterday's food.
04:03Then, you've really got the two you cook on.
04:05We've said that same thing.
04:06I never used...
04:07Oh, I've turned that on too.
04:08It's all right.
04:09No, it's all right.
04:10We've talked in the RV world, like they're all...
04:12It's number three, which is the worst.
04:13You've got double the amount of space just for three burners.
04:15We also use air fryer.
04:16Yeah.
04:17We do a lot in the air fryer.
04:19This is like a residential size sink.
04:21A lot of RVs have this like really not very deep sink.
04:26And things like that.
04:27We've got this residential size sink.
04:29It works really well for us.
04:30These windows are great.
04:32Yeah.
04:33I'm all about light and windows and look at that.
04:35I mean, it's just like a wraparound window.
04:37Yeah.
04:38It's wonderful.
04:39Sometimes it's really beneficial.
04:40Yeah.
04:41Yeah.
04:42Sometimes it's bad, right?
04:43Like you get sun and we got to figure out ways to cover that up.
04:47Yeah.
04:48You notice there aren't any visible curtains here.
04:50So we get creative with how we cover that, but it's also like living in a fishbowl.
04:53That's what we say in our RV.
04:54Yeah.
04:55And I like having the shades up.
04:56Still worth the cost.
04:57Yeah.
04:58Worth the view.
04:59Worth the view.
05:00Plenty of times.
05:01Other people outside might not think that about us.
05:03Well, close your eyes when you're walking around.
05:06That's absolutely true.
05:07Yeah.
05:08You know, one of the things we found about this that we really like is from the outside,
05:11you can't really see in here during the day.
05:14Yeah.
05:15daytime, you can see all the way through and we can't see out.
05:17Yeah.
05:18But daytime, you can't really see in it.
05:20So we can see all the people as they walk by and stare at the bus.
05:23I hit them.
05:24Yeah.
05:25Do you have a pantry?
05:26Yes.
05:27So he's sitting on our pantry.
05:28You're sitting on the pantry?
05:29Oh, look at that.
05:30So here we've got our Keurig, which we use for hot cocoa.
05:34And if you've watched any of our videos, I actually, I've done some videos about not
05:39loving the pumpkin spice stuff.
05:41I'm, I'm a big Christmas guy.
05:43So that goes all the way down.
05:44One thing people ask a lot is like, what the heck is up with this step?
05:47And that's just that our, our air tanks that raised the bus.
05:51So that's kind of got to be where it's at.
05:53Couldn't, we didn't really have an option to move that.
05:55When you park, can you level with the air at all?
05:57Or is it basically just raised and lower?
05:59It's mostly raised and lower.
06:00And we, we typically will try to level a little bit when we first get in.
06:04Cause I can let this side out.
06:06Cause it's a lean, it's a kneeling bus.
06:08Okay.
06:09So we can let this side out, but then turn it off.
06:11And this side will, you know, lose air in the next, you know, 24 hours, right?
06:16It will slowly drop down.
06:17We're tilted right now.
06:18Just a little bit for us.
06:19That basically just means we're putting our head on the other side of the bed.
06:22This is our dining area, storage underneath both of these.
06:26These both also slide together in case we have a guest that needs to sleep.
06:29Somewhere.
06:30So my dad has come and visited just to see what life was like on the bus.
06:34This was for him.
06:35A lot of people have mentioned before about the bus and any of the tours that they've seen.
06:40These come up, the back of these chairs come up to create a dining room table.
06:44And everybody says, that's wonderful.
06:46Like they, they really liked that idea.
06:47We really liked that idea.
06:48It's why we built it in.
06:49And it doesn't function the way you want to.
06:52The RV world.
06:53It's like, you know, the U-9 it looks really cool, but you fight over who has to sit in
06:56the back of the U-9 because nobody wants to crawl back in there.
06:59We use the storage underneath more than anything.
07:01I think Nathan approached me about a double decker years ago when we started and was like,
07:06would you ever do this?
07:07I'm like, that looks really intimidating.
07:09So the fact that we're like standing inside one.
07:12Yeah.
07:13Well, and I, I had never stepped foot in an RV when designing it.
07:16Some of this was just, you know, this was out of the top of my head a little bit.
07:19And I'd never been to an RV show to just even get an idea.
07:22Yeah.
07:23And now that's like, I look back and I'm like, oh, should have gone to the RV shows.
07:27Like at least two or three times to get, or at least once to just walk through RVs and
07:32see what they're like.
07:33Yeah.
07:34At the same time, like if you wait till you know everything you ever think you need to know,
07:36you'll never go.
07:37So we say get to 95% and leave, like make a plan, do a little bit, but don't wait till
07:41perfection or you'll just, you'll never do it.
07:43We designed it and then we sent it off to a builder.
07:45The builder botched a ton of stuff that we wanted and a whole bunch of stuff in this bus.
07:50You get closeups of things.
07:51You can see where it's just not built properly.
07:54That's from the builder.
07:55Well, we took it back from the builder and then we spent about six months working on it ourselves
08:00and putting things together the way they should be done.
08:03If I wait until it's perfect, we're never going to get on the road.
08:06So we said, is it livable?
08:08Can we get in it now?
08:09Can we get going?
08:11So that's, we, we kind of made the plan.
08:13We said, okay, at the end of the school year, June 1st, we're going to hit the road.
08:17Tell us your vision for this.
08:19What, what are you trying to do with your family?
08:21How long do you plan to be?
08:22I mean, ultimately I'm kind of a keep it simple math kind of guy.
08:26And I looked at it and said, I'd like to take all my, my kids to 48 lower states and then we can fly to Alaska and Hawaii.
08:32So I thought, okay, 48 states divide that among two, two years.
08:35Like we get two weeks in each state.
08:37We're good.
08:38Right?
08:39We're going to get you hooked though.
08:40That's what everybody, everybody says they're hitting the road for a certain amount.
08:43They usually it's a one year plan.
08:44You added an extra year.
08:45I think it's important that the kids have a big say in what we're doing.
08:48Absolutely.
08:49We went and said, you know, look, we're going to get on the road.
08:51We'll reevaluate this point.
08:52And at this point, and we'll just keep reevaluating.
08:54And if that means we're on the road for two years, we're on the road for two years.
08:57It means we're on the road for six months or eight months, then that's it.
09:00Yeah.
09:01But if it means we're on the road for eight years, then great.
09:03Bathroom.
09:04This is our downstairs bathroom.
09:06Downstairs bathroom.
09:07That's right.
09:08That's fancy.
09:09There's an upstairs and a downstairs bathroom.
09:11Oh yeah.
09:12It's small.
09:13You'll mention the, uh, the height of that toilet.
09:16Very, very small, very low.
09:18That, that was because the builder couldn't figure out how to make this a sliding door,
09:24had to be an opening door.
09:26One of the unique things about this is that because it sits lower than our black tank,
09:30it actually pumps up.
09:32And so it's got a macerating toilet or a macerator in there.
09:36Okay.
09:37It's a pump.
09:38We got more pantry storage back here.
09:40These, these two, uh, closets originally where the, the ramps and things for the ADA accessible
09:45stuff was.
09:46So that's what was here.
09:47And we just put in some shelves and, uh, put our canned foods, a couple, a little bit
09:52of canned foods in there.
09:53And we have our, our back door here.
09:55That's the other downstairs part that the kids really love cause they can wake up and go
10:00straight downstairs.
10:01Yeah.
10:02So let's go on upstairs.
10:04I mean, I might not normally tell you to film as we walk upstairs.
10:08Our shower is actually halfway up our stairs.
10:10It's in the stairwell.
10:11The reason we have the shower in the stairwell is because this is five, nine upstairs is five,
10:16eight.
10:17And I didn't want a shower that was hitting me in the shoulder.
10:20And so we actually cut our shower into the storage area of the bus with access from here
10:26in the stairs.
10:27So the shower is actually a full seven foot and it's a cedar shower.
10:31That sounds nice.
10:32Yeah.
10:33That's pretty genius.
10:34That's awesome.
10:35I wish this video was scratch and sniff so you could smell that cedar.
10:39Yeah.
10:40Smells great.
10:41Yeah.
10:42It's great.
10:43You turn the hot water on now and it, uh, it really does smell like a sauna.
10:46Yeah.
10:47Like that sauna.
10:48Yeah.
10:49Yeah.
10:50This is a whole new experience being on a second level.
10:51Yeah.
10:52On a second level.
10:53It's kind of blowing my mind here.
10:54I know.
10:55It's a kind of, yeah, this is crazy.
10:56I'm on a boat.
10:57A little bit.
10:58Maybe a little bit.
10:59When we get upstairs, right, we come towards the front of the bus.
11:02If you're turned around at all, this is the front of the bus.
11:04We have our washer and dryer.
11:06It's a all in one unit, ventless.
11:09And right underneath it, a unique thing about our bus is that is our vacuum.
11:15And so we could just sweep things to it and vacuum.
11:17A lot of people haven't seen that.
11:19So it's like a back system right there.
11:21Yeah.
11:22So we can just sweep to it and then it, uh, just vacuum.
11:25And then it's also got a, uh, cord that like a vacuum cord that we can just attach to it
11:30and run that vacuum all over the house.
11:32This is, uh, this is our main living area.
11:35Uh, frankly, I don't, I don't come up here much because I am too tall to stand up here.
11:40These are much more functional than the ones downstairs.
11:42They're the same thing where the backs come up, but the kids use these as their school desks.
11:48So we do a lot of homeschool while we're on the road.
11:50Those come up.
11:51Kids use that as, as their, their desks.
11:53We intentionally do not have a TV hanging on our wall.
11:56Then that's just again, so that the kids can focus on schoolwork when they're, when they're up here.
12:00And when we're up here as a family, we do our nighttime routine and stuff up here a lot.
12:04And we want to spend time together.
12:05So we intentionally didn't go with a TV in this bus at all.
12:08You know, the whole point of doing this and living in this maybe crammed lifestyle is so that we can be together.
12:15I was working a decent job, a good job.
12:17And I was starting my own company at the same time.
12:19And I was putting in just a lot of hours chasing dollars.
12:24Right. And the hope is always that those dollars, then I can spend on time with my kids.
12:29And I was like, well, I can just give up those dollars and get all the time with the kids and my wife that I need.
12:35I would almost literally like go to bed when the kids were, were getting up for school in the morning.
12:40Yeah. And then after doing that for like three months, they're just, we said, you know, we're happiest when we're together.
12:46We were on a road trip just in our van.
12:48We had taken a road trip.
12:49We passed the great sand dunes.
12:50I was really upset that we were like rushing home to a desk job when we were all happy together.
12:56Like I had that, it was like the really the first time in my life where I felt like we have happiness, whatever we're chasing.
13:04It's right here in this van.
13:06And I'm not stopping to see the great sand dunes.
13:08Like that's just ridiculous.
13:09Right.
13:10So I looked at my wife and I said, I don't care what the next roadside thing is.
13:14We're stopping.
13:15I think that what you said is really beautiful.
13:18And like when that light bulb goes off and you're like, what am I doing?
13:22What's really the most important?
13:23Yeah.
13:24You will make sacrifices in your, in your space to experience more with your family.
13:29And it really bonds your family being in a small space.
13:31Like it's so bonding.
13:32Absolutely.
13:33And you realize what's really important and you appreciate things in life.
13:37I know for us living in an RV, we've really appreciated the small things more.
13:40Yes.
13:41All you have to do is just widen your stance.
13:44It's okay.
13:45Yeah.
13:46I can almost do it.
13:49I can almost do it.
13:51Under these two benches, it's just more storage.
13:53We have about a hundred board games in this one.
13:56And then a bunch of school stuff in there and books and whatnot.
13:58I also have this little bench behind you.
14:00That's just above the stairwell.
14:01That's where the kids keep their book bags and most of their school stuff right there.
14:05Basically this folds down and then it's a platform.
14:08So it's over the, over my wife and I, we sleep on this bed.
14:11Basically gives the kids a more playroom during the day.
14:14And then we've got the headboard footboard and this just, you know, creates an entire closed door scenario.
14:21Right?
14:22So we've got our own room.
14:23Now we're experimenting with these, with this.
14:26I put this up just in the last day or two.
14:29We want some sort of curtain system around this.
14:32So we ended up getting dressed right here on the stairs.
14:34We all tend to have good balance.
14:36So nobody's falling down too much yet.
14:38So I put these up just kind of as a, uh, how, how do we want to do this?
14:42So this is just kind of a temporary curtain system going on.
14:47Look at this.
14:48This is cool.
14:49So here we are at the back of the bus.
14:52Um, we've just got like closet space back here.
14:55There is a, there is a window back there and a seat.
14:58Uh, sometimes I will sit here on this seat, just sing to kids that are, you know, nighttime songs or something like that.
15:03We have the seat built there.
15:04Kind of a function that way.
15:06They each kind of have their own bed, their own bedding to kind of personalize their space.
15:12We intend at some point to replace their, their blackout curtains with something that they like.
15:17You know, he, he loves Batman.
15:18So we'll probably get something Batman here, but he also loves all his stickers.
15:22Um, so he's been stickering up his walls, which is totally fine with us.
15:28This is, this is his space, right?
15:30So he gets to do with it what he wants.
15:32We don't have any, no ventilation fans, but that's, uh, bathroom number two.
15:37To the roof.
15:38To the roof.
15:39This is where it's at. Oh my goodness.
15:44There is a world waiting outside our door, it stands.
15:58Hello.
15:59Hello.
16:00People way down there.
16:01Thank God I just saw you because Maverick would have walked right to your GoPro.
16:06Oh, it's been filming forever.
16:08It's okay.
16:09Amazing.
16:10We need one of these, right?
16:11We need a.
16:12I think that we all need one of these.
16:13I do too.
16:14I would say this is one of the coolest perks of the double-decker bus for sure.
16:19This is really cool.
16:20Yeah, so one of.
16:21How much time do you spend up here?
16:22Not as much as we'd like.
16:24The problem with that was just as you saw, like people walk by.
16:27Yeah.
16:28And then they're like trying to talk.
16:29And I, I feel bad, like, like literally talking down to people.
16:33And we wanted to build relationships with people in RV parks we go to.
16:36More or less now, this is an area for my kids.
16:39Yeah.
16:40They love coming up here.
16:41They bring their friends up here.
16:42They got their toys.
16:43I set up their hammocks and, and you know, they can kind of get away.
16:47We put down this boat decking that looks like wood.
16:49It's super soft.
16:50And that, that just makes it so they don't slip as much.
16:54We'd seen a lot of schooly builds.
16:56A lot of those have a deck up top.
16:58And so we were like, oh, that'd be really cool.
17:00And it rides like this going down the road?
17:02No, no, no.
17:03It has to go down.
17:04It has to go down.
17:05Yeah.
17:06When we're going down the road, I take the, the front and back rails.
17:08I set, set them, they go down.
17:09So they're underneath this and then this all folds down.
17:12Can't ride down the road being over 16 feet.
17:14We've got two solar panels up there, two solar panels back there.
17:17And that gives us a good amount of solar for traveling.
17:20So we can, we can manage off grid for about four days.
17:25Six kids in five and a half years.
17:30I mean, we had, um, ours are five years apart and I feel like I'm drowning sometimes.
17:34I can't imagine.
17:35Yeah.
17:36Six in five and a half years.
17:37So our, our oldest just turned 10 and the youngest are twins and they're four.
17:42Yeah.
17:43Yeah.
17:44So six kids, five and a half years.
17:45I love it.
17:46I love it though.
17:47I love big families.
17:48I come from a family of seven and it's special.
17:51Wow.
17:52That is massive.
17:53Yeah.
17:54So it goes all the way through, but also all our water tanks back here.
17:57Wow.
17:58Lots of good stuff.
17:59That is a massive garage.
18:00That's awesome.
18:01Yeah.
18:02One of the things people are halfway interested in is some of this just battery setup.
18:08This is our eight Safari UT 1300 Lyron energy battery.
18:12Yes.
18:13We use mostly Victron components and, and then we have like our circuit breaker and our,
18:18our water heater in here, residential water heater, just like you'd have in your standard
18:22house.
18:23Not what you would typically find in a motor home.
18:25If you want more content about the double decker bus, check out double decker fam.
18:28If you want to see more tours with people living in their RVs, we're going to link to that.
18:32Definitely check it out.
18:33Well, that is our adventure for today until next week's video.
18:36We'll catch you guys later.
18:37We'll catch you guys later.
