BRICS group slams tariffs and Iran conflict at summit in Brazil

BRICS leaders are set to discuss key global political issues, but questions over the bloc’s unity have arisen as Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have opted to skip the summit.

00:00The BRICS bloc of developing economies condemned the increase of tariffs and attacks on Iran,
00:08but refrained from naming US President Donald Trump directly at their summit in Brazil.
00:14The bloc issued a declaration in which they raised serious concerns about the rise of tariffs,
00:19which it said threatened to reduce global trade, disrupt global supply chains and introduce uncertainty.
00:25In their 31-page declaration, the group took aim at Israeli military actions in the Middle East,
00:32spared its founding member Russia from criticism and mentioned war-tron Ukraine only once.
00:55It became a force capable of promoting peace and preventing and mediating conflits.
01:03Despite Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's push to spotlight issues such as artificial intelligence and climate change at the summit,
01:12it has been marked by the absence of several key leaders.
01:14This includes its two most powerful members, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
