00:00Leaders of the BRICS bloc are convening in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil for a two-day summit.
00:05They're expected to discuss many pressing political topics,
00:08chief among them U.S. President Donald Trump's global tariffs,
00:11which have been paused for 90 days but are set to resume on Wednesday.
00:15Leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa are hoping to formulate
00:19a unified response to a potential trade war which threatens major instability.
00:23The summit, however, did feature two major absences in Chinese President Xi Jinping
00:27and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
00:30The Chinese leader has sent Prime Minister Li Keung in his place,
00:33skipping the summit for the first time since his rise to power in 2012.
00:37According to the Kremlin, Putin is avoiding arrest amid a pending warrant by the International Criminal Court
00:42for his role in Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
00:46Their absence has raised questions over the bloc's cohesion.
00:49In a video address, Putin says BRICS are united and strong,
00:53noted that the bloc, which accounts for 40 percent of the world economy, is still rapidly growing.
