00:00Some people were tremendously offended.
00:03I take it this was the striptease early in the first episode?
00:07Yeah.
00:08Yeah, of course.
00:09Of course.
00:10These days in the English-speaking world, anime is normal.
00:14Fans are everywhere.
00:16Every mall has anime stuff.
00:17New releases show up regularly in theaters.
00:20It didn't used to be like this.
00:21You gotta understand anime was not around.
00:23It was not common.
00:24There was a sense that there was something different about them, but not even understanding
00:28what that was.
00:29Okay, this is coming from Japan.
00:31That's why it's different from what I'm seeing on Saturday mornings.
00:35For over 30 years, a cottage industry of publishers, organizers, writers, and other professionals
00:40saw the potential in anime and fought like hell to make it a thing.
00:44Who would want this stuff except for a few nerds?
00:48Everything we heard was so loud, so clear, so much of a yes.
00:52It's psychic wave, not psychic wave.
00:54This is a joke.
00:56You guys are a fucking joke.
00:58And they looked at me like, we're not distributing Saturday morning cartoons, but we're selling
01:03it out.
01:04Look at this crowd.
01:06This is something.
01:07Well, John, we know that you'll be a failure trying to sell Japanese animation because there's
01:12no reason for Americans to want to buy Japanese animation.
01:14And we couldn't let you do that when you were with us because it would be a hit to our brand
01:19identity.
01:20Now that you're Central Park Media, we really don't care if you fail.
01:23These are their stories in their own words.
01:25I look at anime the same way I look at opera.
01:28If a person likes opera, they're going to be open to a new opera.
01:32And there's a new opera, they're watching an old opera, and there's a new version of an
01:36old opera.
01:37And there's a new anime business.
01:38If you want more interviews with anime's founding fathers, like, subscribe, and also
01:42check out our supporter platform on MediaOCD.com.
01:46Interviewing all these people was not cheap, and we'd love to do more if there's demand.
01:49We'll have exclusive clips, blog entries, and more, just for the fans that can help
01:53chip in.
01:54While you're there, maybe grab a Blu-ray or a T-shirt.
01:56We really appreciate it.
