00:04:56He was in my camp and helped me to prepare to my opponent, Richard Comey

00:05:04And he always tried to show his style

00:05:08You prepare to your opponent like just a sparring partner

00:05:14It can be a very, very big trouble

00:05:18So I prepare very, very hard

00:05:22And I prepare like always

00:05:24And I focus on my opponent very serious

00:05:29Jermaine, you sparred extensively with Vasily with the Richard Comey fight

00:05:39What did you take from that experience?

00:05:41Uh, it was a great experience being in there with him and just

00:05:45To see how my footwork matched the person across the ring from you

00:05:51And definitely bring out the best out of you

00:05:53I've gotten a lot of rounds with him, you know, five weeks of sparring

00:05:57Whose advantage is that?

00:05:59Yours or his, ultimately?

00:06:01That's real tough to say

00:06:03I really think that's tough because sparring is

00:06:05It's sparring, it's not going all out

00:06:08I was just trying to imitate Richard Comey as much as possible

00:06:11What tendencies did you notice?

00:06:14Watching him as a fighter or sparring with him?

00:06:17One, he's a late starter

00:06:19You know, if you watch him long enough

00:06:21It's the same thing over and over and over again

00:06:23So if you got that down packed

00:06:25You're gonna know what's coming

00:06:35It's very important because

00:14:38Jermaine Ortiz coming off a career-best win.

00:14:43Over the great one, Jamel Herring, who is joining me on the broadcast tonight.

00:14:47Here we go. Right away, you see the difference in stance.

00:14:50Vasily Lomachenko is a southpaw. Jermaine Ortiz, orthodox.

00:14:55He's a switch hitter as well. Ortiz is a switch hitter.

00:14:58He'll fight all the docs women and he can offer a fight at southpaw as well.

00:15:02Something important to note, Jermaine Ortiz did say.

00:15:04He knows Lomachenko has a tendency to be a slow starter.

00:15:07He'd like to jump on him early and get a couple rounds in the bank.

00:15:26And one of Ortiz's strengths that I know from being in with him is that he's constantly throwing punches.

00:15:32You know, that keeps you guessing and busy as you see right now.

00:15:36And I believe that's what he has, I believe that's what he has to do, especially if he watched the fight with Tio Fimo Lopez and Lomachenko.

00:15:44And Tio Fimo always kept something in Lomachenko's face to get him from, you know, from coming, from starting his own arsenal and basically bringing out that arsenal that we all refer to as the Matrix.

00:15:57And Jermaine Ortiz is very familiar with him. We've said it time and time again. They are former sparring partners, but he also has watched all of Lomachenko's fights.

00:16:05He says he looked up to him. He even went as far to say that he idolized him when he was young. He used to try to imitate things that he did.

00:16:12Good count from Ortiz. Catching Lomachenko, you know, diving in a little bit.

00:16:21Lomachenko, three-division world champion, former pound for pound fighter.

00:16:30Many still believe he is at least in the top ten of pound for pound, despite his losses.

00:17:32Lomachenko is very gifted, but at the same time,

00:17:35he's not the bigger man in his division.

00:17:38And really never has been, right?

00:17:40Yeah, he's been, he beats you with pure skill.

00:17:43And I see a little whoop under Lomachenko's eye,

00:17:45but I don't know if I see it correctly under his right eye.

00:17:47I think that might have just happened there at the end.

00:17:51Yeah.

00:17:52But to your point, in the side...

00:17:53Spider in Lomachenko.

00:17:55He threw and landed more punches than did Lomachenko in that first round.

00:18:04And you're right, underneath the right eye,

00:18:06a small little bump, if you will, not necessarily bleeding,

00:18:10but contusion there under the right eye of Lomachenko here in round one.

00:18:15I like Ortiz being that he's aggressive,

00:18:25and he's not afraid of the moment.

00:18:27You know, he hasn't let the moment get to him.

00:18:29And he's not clearly not afraid of the man in the myth of Lomachenko.

00:18:34Good left hand landed there by Lomachenko.

00:18:36But to your point, he was very confident in the fighter meeting.

00:18:39He said, this has been God's plan.

00:18:41I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be at this point in my career.

00:18:44I always dreamed about fighting Vasily Lomachenko.

00:18:47I feel like my last fight helped prepare me for this moment.

00:18:51But he is taking a big step up in opposition fighting Lomachenko.

00:18:54And, in fact, is in his very first 12-round fight.

00:18:57And for a fighter that's known to take his opposition into deep waters,

00:19:01in fact, making many early opponents quit.

00:19:03But that's no easy task.

00:19:05But he knows that.

00:19:06And, you know, to Lomachenko's credit,

00:19:10he also got to take consideration that he hasn't fought in over a year now,

00:19:14and he's kind of getting that ring rust off as well.

00:19:16You know, and he's first in the end.

00:19:18Kudos to Ortiz for pointing that out there.

00:19:20He knows that Lomachenko's a slow starter at times.

00:19:27Yes.

00:19:28It's very tough.

00:19:29It's very tough to fight anybody that you spot with

00:19:32because they're familiar with all your little tricks and trades and tools.

00:19:35And vice versa at times, too.

00:19:37But it goes both ways, right?

00:19:38Yeah, and vice versa at times.

00:19:39But at the same time, you still have that confidence like,

00:19:41listen, I've been here with this guy, like you said, five weeks,

00:19:44and that's plenty of time.

00:19:45Oh, good shot right there from Lomachenko with the right hand.

00:19:51Ortiz smartly ties him up.

00:19:53Yeah.

00:19:54Keep that jab. Don't let him settle.

00:19:56But that wealth under the eye is starting to get bigger as the round goes on.

00:20:04And that's gonna be peppered by that jab.

00:20:06That jab, that's his best tool. That's his best tool.

00:20:09He changes angles with the jab, have you seen?

00:20:31He gives angles just as well as Lomachenko.

00:20:35That's what frustrated the hell out of me when I fought him out, if I'm being honest.

00:20:39I was like, man, this kid is all over the place.

00:20:41And I'm like, I can't get a read on him long enough to land something that's telling.

00:20:47Oh, nice jab from Lomachenko.

00:20:55Really beautiful stuff here we're seeing in right in round two.

00:20:58This one heated up quickly as Ortiz took another nice shot there from Lomachenko.

00:21:13And there's a closer look at that mark, if you will.

00:21:37And that could have possibly been where that abrasion actually came from underneath the right eye.

00:22:20I mean, I could see the judges possibly giving that first round to Ortiz, but maybe that second round to Lomachenko.

00:22:24So, we'll see as we have this one pushed along, but Loma definitely stepped it up more in that second round.

00:22:29You can see both of them and the angles and the footwork that they have on display.

00:22:58It's beautiful to watch.

00:23:01And you know what? I think Jermaine Ortiz summed it up great.

00:23:03He said it's going to be a dance battle.

00:23:10I believe their feet and their footwork is their best tool.

00:23:16Lomachenko has many tools, of course, but I believe his footwork has always been one of his best feet because he can change angles.

00:25:29Ortiz is starting to, you know, he admired his work a little bit too much there.

00:25:33And he got caught with two good shots from Lomachenko.

00:25:36He has to be well aware at all times.

00:25:39You cannot fall asleep behind the wheel against a guy like Vasily Lomachenko.

00:25:49And that's where you see that difference in the level of opposition that he's faced.

00:25:55Maybe some other guys, he could take that half a second and admire his work if he will.

00:26:00Lomachenko's too smart for that.

00:26:02Nope.

00:26:03And again, these guys, these guys have had, they shared the ring together.

00:26:07Maybe not in terms of a real fight, but they, you know, they've been in a training camp together.

00:26:11Five weeks.

00:26:12That's a long time to get familiar with anybody.

00:26:14And that's for Lomachenko's last fight against Richard Comey, which was back in December.

00:26:19So we're not talking about years ago.

00:26:21We're talking about maybe a year ago.

00:26:23And I love that Ortiz, he always starts well with the jab.

00:26:27He just happens to be consistent and stay like that for a four or three minutes,

00:26:31which is hard to do because, like I said, Lomachenko, once he gets that ball to running,

00:26:36you know, he was trouble for anybody, but Ortiz has to be sharp the entire round.

00:26:45Good job, Ortiz.

00:26:47Good combination.

00:26:52Gotta watch out for that lead.

00:26:54That lead, that lead left here from Lomachenko is dangerous.

00:27:09I like how Ortiz, you know, he doesn't, he doesn't fully commit with power behind the jab,

00:27:15You have to get him right back in the center of the ring if you watch carefully.

00:27:18Oh, nice little, nice little, nice little, you know, tricks right there.

00:27:21Yeah.

00:27:22And on the inside, he rough as, he rough as the smaller man of Lomachenko out.

00:27:25And Fitch is letting them work.

00:27:27Yeah.

00:27:30But Lomachenko hasn't had the best he has to get started.

00:27:32Because I don't want to, we don't want to see him in a situation where he,

00:27:35where he had against Teofimo Lopez.

00:27:37When he, he allowed like five, six rounds to go by before he really started,

00:27:41you know, showing his dominance.

00:27:43Yeah, and I don't feel like that's really the case in this way.

00:27:45Because I did think he had a pretty good second round,

00:27:47even if the judges didn't give it to him.

00:27:49But I, I, I do think that Jermaine Ortiz is throwing a lot more punches

00:27:53and is coming on stronger here.

00:27:55Even if to your point, it's, they're not all scoring punches.

00:27:58Right.

00:27:59It's enough to keep Lomachenko in more of a guard,

00:28:01than on more of an offensive attack.

00:28:04And anyway, I like how when Ortiz, when he, like again,

00:28:07when he, when he pulled out Lomachenko and she gets in,

00:28:09tie him up.

00:28:10Especially if the referee's not calling it,

00:28:11just tie him up and use it to your advantage.

00:28:14Be physical.

00:28:19For the, the beautiful angles of Lomachenko though.

00:28:22Ortiz is just smart enough to grab, grab a hold or something.

00:28:27And some of the guys that have given Lomachenko

00:28:30more problems have been the younger guys.

00:28:34The stronger guys.

00:28:35The guys that throw a lot of punches,

00:28:36and that are really busy.

00:28:37Yeah, these young, these young fighters,

00:28:39but it could be an air pull.

00:28:40I mean, Lomachenko, 34 years old.

00:28:48Oh, nice combination from Ortiz.

00:28:51And he gets caught with the counter,

00:28:52but Ortiz exuding a lot of confidence right here,

00:28:55the last minute of round four.

00:28:57And they go toe-to-toe to the bell here in round four.

00:29:06Nice fight has broken out.

00:29:08But again, these are the issues that I had in the,

00:29:12I can remember the last two rounds of my fight against Ortiz,

00:29:16when he just kept punching.

00:29:18And for a minute, I honestly can say, I looked at you like,

00:29:21what's going on?

00:29:23Like, this guy isn't like, I'm like...

00:29:25His motor.

00:29:26His motor just keeps going.

00:29:27I'm like, and I believe that's what caused me to fight

00:29:30when we fought against each other.

00:29:33Back to the jab!

00:29:34It's just his output was just ridiculous.

00:29:36Yeah, because you started so strong, that fight.

00:29:39Right.

00:29:40You know what I mean?

00:29:41You guys were keeping up with each other,

00:29:42but he ended up just continuing to outwork and frustrate you.
