00:00Thank you for joining us. I'm Robin Watts.
00:02And I'm Jim O'Banion. Do not attempt to adjust your television. The picture really is that bad.
00:08Scientists are at a loss to explain the worldwide disruption in broadcast communications, which began locally about 1.15 this morning.
00:15When contacted at his retreat in Nome, Alaska, noted telecommunications theorist Dr. Kim Winther refused to speculate on the cause for this disturbance,
00:23other than to say, quote, perhaps we're experiencing a new kind of sunspot.
00:27In the meantime, our station's management wants you to know that we are doing everything in our power to work around this disturbance.
00:34You know, really, if this keeps up, perhaps the cable companies could give a rebate.
00:37Yeah, don't hold your breath on that one.
00:40Well, in a related story, reporters were dumbfounded this morning when a hastily called press conference at the SETI project in New Mexico was just as hastily canceled.
00:50This is not the first such false alarm from the search for extraterrestrial intelligence project.
00:55In the past, it's mistaken encrypted Soviet and U.S. satellite signals for messages from the stars.
01:00This morning's mix-up, though, was no doubt triggered, in part, by the broadcast problems that we're having.
01:05President Whitmore has announced he will attend the memorial services for Israeli fighter pilot Ahmed Elial,
01:11who died last night after suffering a blow to the head from a champagne bottle at his daughter's wedding.
01:16Elial is seen here in file footage.
01:18Whitmore flew with Elial during the Operation Desert Storm and had maintained a strong friendship with the colorful Israeli over the years.
01:26It is not known if the president will use this visit to advance stalled peace negotiations or not.
01:30The underground environmental organization that calls itself Blue Earth Acolytes has been claiming the government is covering up some dark secrets.
01:42This recent plague of global television static, they say, is proof in your own home.
01:47The group's leader, who is known only as Douglas X, agreed to a rare interview with our hard copy cameras.
01:52We've discovered various documents that point to this.
01:56We've had members go undercover in important government locations to witness these covert projects.
02:02This television disturbance comes as no surprise to our Blue Earth members.
02:05If you think the static's bad now, just wait.
02:09Mr. X has said that his group plans to take action.
02:13Stay tuned to see what they have in mind.
02:15Ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen, we are interrupting our regular broadcast to bring you extraordinary events taking place in the Reckon Republic.
02:25We now join the Soviet Central News Broadcasting, live from Novosibirsk, Russia.
02:29...of unknown origin heading towards the city.
02:31It appears to be an atmospheric phenomenon.
02:35A reporter is near the industrial sector of Beretsk Airport.
02:39Igor, can you hear me?
02:40This unexplained disturbance and the hysteria that it's causing are incredible.
02:46How would you describe what you are seeing?
02:49It is clearing the mountains.
02:51Sightings have been reported here in Novosibirsk, Russia and other parts of Siberia.
02:57Moving too slowly to be a comet or meteor, astronomers are baffled as to its origin.
03:04Are people in danger?
03:05Not from the panic, but from the phenomenon.
03:08Officials assure me that we will be perfectly safe.
03:11Nevertheless, widespread panic has gripped the countryside as thousands have taken to the streets and clogged the highways.
03:23Hundreds have been injured.
03:24The military is overwhelmed.
03:26We understand it was mistaken for a nuclear accident.
03:30That is correct.
03:32There was an unexplained, booming sound when it appeared, waking residents less than 15 minutes ago.
03:42Fire is so intense, it is creating a vacuum in the direction of the phenomenon.
03:47We are beginning to hear reports from Barabinsk and Tartarsk.
03:51The phenomenon continues its spread west.
03:56News comes in from around the country as panic spreads.
04:02A failed nuclear experiment?
04:05A volcanic eruption?
04:07We do not know.
04:08Novosibirsk is on the same parallel as Moscow, but sits roughly 2,000 miles to the east, north of China.
04:31It is also home to a major part of Russia's nuclear testing program, a fact that is certainly contributing to the panic that we're witnessing now.
04:40Roads are clogged.
04:41Phone lines are down.
04:43The government implores everyone to return to their homes and remain calm.
04:48You're watching live coverage from the Russian Republic and unexplained phenomena lighting up the skies over Siberia and causing mass hysteria.
04:56A series of ground tremors alerted citizens to the arrival of something truly massive.
05:00We do not know if this strange occurrence is natural or man-made, but in either case, it is at least as large as a major storm system, possibly much bigger.
05:10We can get information about this in all areas of the country and the panic of the population is growing.
05:16Is this a successful experiment of nuclear explosion?
05:25We interrupted our programming.
05:26Is this on?
05:29Are we on?
05:30We've interrupted our programming to bring you live images from a city in Russia called Novosibirsk.
05:36Sky News first broke this story nationally less than a few minutes ago, and we're picking up both their satellite feed and Glassnose Agency feed relayed to us via Sweden.
05:44I'm Jim O'Bannon.
05:45And I'm Robin Wass.
05:46There it is, the strange atmospheric phenomenon.
05:49It is apparently what has been causing all the distortions in our broadcast since early this morning.
05:53Scientists still do not know what it is, but it is apparently several thousand feet above ground and poses no, no threat to the citizens of Russia.
06:02You're watching live images of widespread panic throughout the former Soviet Union.
06:06Phones are out.
06:07Airports are closed.
06:08We have one report from a woman in Little Odessa who was talking to her fiancé when a horrendous rumbling started.
06:14Seconds later, the phone went dead.
06:17We have reporter Tim Popovich on the phone right now.
06:19Tim, the question, what is the mood there in Little Odessa?
06:22I was having lunch with my grandmother when the story first came on television.
06:26My family remembers watching the Chirinova meltdown and how the government kept saying everything was fine.
06:33That's what it feels like now.
06:36That's why you're seeing so much panic.
06:39It's horrible.
06:40Tim, let me share with you some of the information that's coming over the wire.
06:44None of this is confirmed, but it is the only information we have to go on.
06:47An anti-nuclear civil rights organization called the Blue Earth Acolytes is making claims that this phenomenon is the result of a failed fusion experiment.
06:57I think there is radiation danger.
06:59It's just not telling anybody.
07:01Now, another scientist thinks this might be part of the sun's surface, which, well, flaked off, if you will, and hit the Earth's atmosphere as a record solar flare.
07:09Now, if he is correct, he says we had better stock up on sunblock because the ozone will not survive this onslaught for much longer.
07:16Robin, excuse me, excuse me.
07:18There have been additional unconfirmed sightings now over France, Korea, and here in the United States.
07:24Now, let me remind you, these are unconfirmed sightings, but they do include Washington, D.C. and New York City.
07:30We must ask you, our viewing audience, to remain calm.
07:34Please, remain calm.
07:36Well, as we have witnessed in Nouveau-Sibirsk, injuries and deaths, they occur when people panic.
07:40If you are at work, just stay at work.
07:42If you are at home, stay at home.
07:44You are safer where you are than on the streets.
07:46Please do not panic.
07:49What happened?
07:50We apologize.
07:50We seem to have lost our feeds from Nouveau-Sibirsk.
07:53These additional unexplained phenomenon have been confirmed by ships at sea.
07:57New York is about to be visited by some kind of unusual firestorm, the kind we have just been watching.
08:03The mayor's office is advising that everyone stay indoors.
08:06Do not, I repeat, do not go onto your roofs.
08:09While the storm is several thousand feet in the air, no one is quite sure what the storm will do once it arrives.
08:15We have some new information here.
08:17We have just learned that the mayor has activated the air raid sirens.
08:20They have not been used since 1968.
08:23Our weather view camera at the World Trade Center is now showing us this view.
08:28As you can see, it is still a considerable distance out to sea and approaching rapidly.
08:33It's very hard to make out exactly what it is through all that haze.
08:36That is huge, absolutely huge.
08:38The question, do we know, are there any ships out there that might be in danger?
08:42Oh, my goodness.
08:43What?
08:44Did you feel that?
08:45Let's calm down.
08:46Please, remain calm.
08:48Folks, we have just felt a foreshock from the phenomenon.
08:51A little earthquake like the ones apparently experienced in Omsk and Moscow as the sky phenomenon made its way west from Nouveau-Sibirsk.
08:58Again, officials are saying, you are perfectly safe.
09:01They say, do not run outdoors, do not panic.
09:03Stay tuned as this story develops.
09:13We break our plan-based program for an actual special report.
09:17From Nouveau-Sibirsk, there is been reported on the rise of an unknown phenomenon in Central Russia.
09:23Scientists are not willing to say about its origin.
09:26It is not a meteor.
11:15Die Welt wartet in geschockter Stille.

37:50Good evening and welcome.
37:55Gentlemen, tonight the world is faced with a potentially grave scenario.
37:59Dr. Engel, this alien force, friend or foe?
38:04Friends.
38:05Definitely friends, Al.
38:06Foe.
38:07Definitely foe, Al.
38:09I think that's pretty clear.
38:10And what have they done that has been friendly?
38:12The fact that they've showed up at all.
38:16I believe very strongly, and I have a number of colleagues who also share this belief,
38:21that they have visited us before.
38:23In fact, they have never left.
38:25It's the test which is being given to us by our forebearers who, in fact, were these folks
38:31from out there.
38:32Excuse me.
38:34Now are these forebearers that you're referring to, are these aliens from the planet Whoopi
38:41or, I mean, where did these people come from?
38:43All I know is that you ask any culture in the world, you say, where is God?
38:48Everyone points up.
38:49You look up in the sky, you point up there, you've got a spaceship 15 miles wide hovering
38:55over every strategic point in the world.
38:59You know, you couldn't place them more strategically to wipe us out.
39:03Dr. Fields, I understand your agitation tonight, but the world community wants to know, what
39:09should our response be?
39:10What everyone must do is focus their energies up to the sky.
39:17Send all your good thoughts and all your energy.
39:20Meditate.
39:22Prayer is not too strong a word.
39:23And that's nice.
39:24You remind me of Richard Gere at the Oscar telecast there.
39:27You know, we're all gonna pray to China for peace, but somehow I don't think that worked
39:32either.
39:33Thank you, Doctor.
39:34I mean, no one's ever compared me to Richard Gere before.
39:36I take that as a real compliment.
39:37You would.
39:38Perhaps this lack of sunlight has affected your visual acuity.
39:40All right, gentlemen.
39:41Please.
39:42Please.
39:43There's a fundamental question here tonight.
39:45Why Earth?
39:47Because we are.
39:48Because we are the most intelligent lower life form in the universe.
39:54Dr. Fields, what should we do?
39:56What is your position?
39:57We're obviously dealing with a much more powerful force than ours, and I think we have to recognize
40:02the overwhelming probability that this force is here for mal-intent rather than good intent.
40:09And we have to close our doors and lock them as tight as we can and have contingency plans
40:14for just the worst possible scenario.
40:17Gentlemen, why now?
40:21Why now?
40:22Because they want it to be now.
40:24And what are they gonna do?
40:25Everything they want to do.
40:26800-pound gorilla sleep any place he wants.
40:29And that's what they're gonna do.
40:30And that's what those aliens are.
40:31They're nothing more than an 800-pound gorilla.
40:34Maybe they're here as teachers.
40:35Excuse me?
40:36I say maybe they're here as teachers.
40:38I mean, I agree with you, Doctor.
40:40It is a force far beyond our wildest dreams.
40:43Maybe they have come as teachers.
40:45Perhaps.
40:46Perhaps.
40:47I mean, I don't look at, you know, crops with circles in them and, you know, the pyramids
40:53and Stonehenge and, you know, human beings have done pretty well.
40:58I don't think we needed any help from outer space.
41:01And we certainly don't need it now.
41:02And I hope you're right, Doctor Engel.
41:04But I fear you're wrong.
41:05The reason why the human race hasn't advanced as much as it could in the past years since
41:11it's been on this planet is simply because of attitudes like yours, Doctor Fields.
41:15Well, I don't want to get into character assassination personalities, clearly.
41:19Gentlemen.
41:20Time will tell.
41:21I hope you're right.
41:22Please.
41:23Let's try to get some harmony here tonight.
41:24And let's hope for the best for the world tomorrow.
41:30I'm George Putnam.
41:31Thank you for joining Sky News for continuing coverage of these historic events.
41:36And I'm Bob Friend in London.
41:37George, this has certainly been a day when the world stood still.
41:41All of us overall in the presence of visitors from another star system.
41:45Visitors who have yet to break the silence and tell us their intentions.
41:49Showing a good neighbourly spirit, world leaders have just given the green light to Operation
41:54Welcome Wagon.
41:56Science correspondent Monica Soloway is standing by at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington
42:01with the details.
42:02Monica, we can see thousands of spectators have already gathered for this historic event.
42:07They seem very optimistic, full of anticipation.
42:09But what's the mood out there on the top?
42:12General Van Horn and his men have been working under crisis conditions, scrambling to get
42:16the equipment they need to make this mission possible.
42:18Now, in light of our apparent inability to communicate with the visitors, Pentagon officials
42:23have retrofit the Skylift helicopter with a type of visual communications device, which
42:29they hope will be the first step in communicating with the alien craft.
42:32Now, this is not a military aircraft.
42:34It comes from the U.S. Forest Service and it normally carries tons of water to fire situations.
42:41But as you can see from this tape made earlier today, it has been loaded up with a powerful
42:45generator and refitted with these enormous light panels that are attached to the hull and onto
43:00the sides.
43:01Monica, what are those other helicopters?
43:03Well, those escorts are called Hueys, Bob, and Andrews maintains a couple of them for
43:09training missions, but they don't normally see active duty anymore.
43:13Their use here on Welcome Wagon is almost ceremonial.
43:15They're really treating this as an ambassador's mission and the escorts lend importance to
43:21the proceedings without any military threat.
43:26You are watching live coverage of Operation Welcome Wagon, the first physical attempt at
43:31communicating with the alien visitors.
43:34That faint buzzing you hear is from Andrews Flight Operations Channel.
43:38George, that's right.
43:39Now, normally these channels are encrypted and scrambled, but President Whitmore has granted
43:43unrestricted access to media outlets all over the world.
43:47After all, this is hardly a domestic issue.
43:49Any moment now, we should hear the voice of Pilot Commander Al Reeves announcing that he
43:53is in position to begin his approach.
43:56Now we don't know the names of the other crew members, all regular staff here at Andrews.
44:01The only person on board Skylift whose name we do know is that of Bill Fay, and he is from
44:06the SETI Institute.
44:08He will be the person operating the light display, and that light display is...
44:12Copy that base.
44:13This is Echo One.
44:14We are approaching start position.
44:15Over.
44:16Roger that.
44:17Echo One.
44:18You are go to commence sequence when ready.
44:20Over.
44:21Copy that base.
44:23The professor will be breaking the ice in no time.
44:25Over.
44:26Copy that.
44:27Echo One.
44:28Godspeed.
44:29This moment of levity from Commander Reeves.
44:31A welcome attempt at defusing some of the tension everyone must be feeling right now.
44:35Now they have been given the go ahead for their initial approach, and as previously agreed,
44:40there will be no more radio communications until this message has cycled at least eight
44:45times.
44:46Now it's a little hard to see here from the ground, but this night vision view is showing
44:50us the mission in progress.
44:52Any second now you should see the Skylift helicopter turn on.
44:55There they are.
44:56Sixty-four powerful lights on either side of the Skylift helicopter have just begun to
45:01flash humanity's first visual message to our visitors.
45:05You can almost see the questions on every face in the crowd.
45:13Are you friendly?
45:14Have you come in peace?
45:16Friend or foe?
45:17We watch and wait, hoping for a sign.
45:19Any sign at all.
45:20Bob, the message is beginning its third cycle now.
45:24It is a simple message comprised of mathematical concepts converted into binary form.
45:30Things such as the value of pi, the first ten prime numbers, and Einstein's E equals MC squared.
45:38Building blocks that any spacefaring civilization should recognize.
45:42The fate of our world could hang on this universal language of mathematics.
45:47Why binary, Monica?
45:49Well, quite simply, it is the simplest and quickest language to teach and to learn,
45:54independent of sound and cultural and human characteristics.
45:58Think of it as sort of an Esperanto for the galaxy, if you will.
46:03The three choppers are steadily approaching what has been unanimously agreed to be the front
46:08of these spaceships.
46:09A parabolic indentation, nine city blocks in diameter, which is believed to lead to an opening
46:15in the middle of the aircraft.
46:17A doorway, an airlock, we just don't know.
46:21Fifth cycle now, still no response.
46:26The lights are visible on the surface of the alien craft now, still two miles away.
46:32By the way, special thanks to Sky News cameraman Peter Krause for volunteering to stay in the
46:37evacuated area of Georgetown and bring us these live pictures of Welcome Wagon in progress.
46:43The helicopters are making their final approach.
46:48That's right, George.
46:49And that completes the eighth cycle of the message.
46:52We cannot...
46:53No response to our greeting.
46:54Professor's requesting to go closer.
46:56We will proceed.
46:57As expected, there is less gravity close to the lampshade.
47:00Over.
47:01Copy.
47:02Echo one.
47:03You have permission to find doorbell.
47:06Now, finding the doorbell is Al Reeve's signal to actually guide his Sky Lift helicopter
47:11into that opening.
47:12This is a step that General Van Horn was against, but he was overruled by Atlantic Command as
47:18a whole.
47:19Now, the lower gravity is probably a side effect of the process that keeps these massive spaceships
47:25hanging in the air.
47:26Scientists don't know how it's done, but these visitors seem to have a greater understanding
47:31of physics than we can even imagine.
47:33We have contact.
47:34Something's opening.
47:35Something is happening.
47:37A bright light is now coming from the craft.
47:40We can see it from here.
47:41We're feeling it pretty bad up here.
47:43Something's pushing on us.
47:48Aboard.
47:49Aboard!
47:50Aboard!
47:51Come on!
47:52Damn you son of a...
47:59Mission time marker 0-12-10.
48:02Operation Welcome Wagon is over.
48:06In essence, our questions are answered.
48:10The visitors responded with terrifying, unmistakable eloquence.
48:14George, without being presumptuous, I'm sure we speak for the whole world when we say
48:19our hearts and our prayers go out to the wives and children of those brave pilots.
48:23Indeed, God help us all.
48:25Heath that will help us all.
