00:00That's an Indian Prime Minister being welcomed in a Caribbean nation with an Indian folk
00:14performance known as the Bhojpuri Chotal. Indians started to arrive at the shores of Trinidad and
00:18Tobago 1845 onwards as slaves and indentured labourers. They now account for 42% of the
00:23population of Trinidad and Tobago with 1.4 million people. The British ended slavery in 1833
00:28and brought over 1.5 lakh indentured Hindu and Muslim labourers to Trinidad between 1845 and 1970.

00:40free villages. By Trinidad's independence in 1962, Indo-Trinidadians had begun owning land and
00:45running farms. Today, they are deeply woven into Trinidad's culture and politics. Intermarriage
