00:00Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:16Now, I read a piece the other day about how spending time alone is good for you.
00:22Apparently, according to this report anyway, it clears the mind, reduces stress and all the rest of it.
00:26And I suppose we're all leading busy lives. Hopefully mine is less busy.
00:32But nonetheless, the ability to spend time alone is diminishing.
00:37If we have the chance, apparently, Rachel, we should read, go to the cinema, eat alone and all the rest of it.
00:42Now, I don't know about you. In fact, I think you're fortunate in having somebody to travel with and spend time with.
00:49I don't. She says go off and do it on your own.
00:54Well, that's good for you, apparently.
00:58Well, apparently, I think, and I do spend a lot of time on my own.
01:01In fact, a couple of years ago, I said, like, it's so cold here. It's January. Let's go away on holiday.
01:06She said, great idea. You go. I'll stay here.
01:08What do you think? Do you ever spend much time alone?
01:11I've not travelled. Every Saturday, I'm a strictly widow these days.
01:14So I'm by myself. But it's quite nice every now and again to have some time.
01:17The only thing I don't like is when you're trying to be by yourself and trying to just relax and chill out and your phone doesn't stop going.
01:23I like being away from that. I had a whole week over the summer where I was just on a boat, but no signal.
01:28And that was the best thing. That was getting away from the world.
01:31And when you got back into signal range, there they were waiting for you.
01:36All those calls.
01:36All the messages, everything that had happened in the world.
01:38Yeah, it was much nicer not knowing.
01:39Now, who have we got? Guess what, Rachel?
01:43Owens back, wearing his T-shirt, which says number six.
01:48Brilliant stuff. You've played so well from County Waterford.
01:51How are you feeling?
01:52Oh, OK.
01:54Yeah?
01:54Hey, it's a bit more relaxed. I haven't done a few.
01:57You've given us a tremendous time anyway, and you're still running.
01:59So good luck to you with five wins under your belt and going for number six.
02:05Well done.
02:06Now, you're up against Dan. Dan Batten.
02:08Welcome, Dan.
02:09Hi, Rick.
02:09From Chester.
02:10Yep.
02:11And you're a writer.
02:12I certainly have.
02:13Yep.
02:13And you've just recently, I think, one of your short stories has been published.
02:18I have, yeah.
02:19There's a small e-book online, so everybody go out and bite.
02:22Thank you, Rich, please.
02:24Indeed.
02:25First thing we do when the game's over.
02:27Anyway, good luck to you both.
02:29Good luck, Dan and Owen, too.
02:30Big round of applause for our competitors.
02:35Hi, mate, in the corner.
02:37Susie is there.
02:40With Dr. Phil.
02:41Back again.
02:42Hi there.
02:42What a pleasure it is to see you.
02:44Pleasure.
02:45Oh, that's very kind.
02:49Spending time on your own is interesting, isn't it?
02:51Because if you enjoy your own company, being on your own becomes solitude.
02:55If you don't like your own company, it becomes loneliness.
02:57So the question you have to ask yourself, can you disappear inside your own head, Nick,
03:01and not mind what you find there?
03:03The secret of being healthy and happy is to love yourself.
03:05So I want you to work on your self-love, Nick.
03:07Owen, get me out of this, please.
03:10There we are.
03:11Good.

13:08Well done.
13:11Well done.
13:13You're good with the numbers, Owen, that's for sure.
13:15Very good.
13:16Now, then.
13:16Dr. Phil.
13:18Hello.
13:18What have you got?
13:19Well, today, in fact, all this week, I'm going to be going behind the headlines.
13:23You know, sometimes you see headlines in newspapers, particularly about health, and you get very excited or very scared.
13:28I'm going to be gently teasing apart some of the headlines that I've seen recently in the national press.
13:33And the first one I saw, which I thought of you, Nick, was give statins to all men over 60.
13:38Yeah.
13:39GPs are told.
13:40Yeah.
13:41Now, I don't particularly like that headline, but I'm guessing, as a man over 60, are you on statins, Nick?
13:45No.
13:46Okay.
13:46Have you had other sort of procedures done to you because you're over 60?
13:50Anyone had a little look-see?
13:53Moving quickly on.
13:54Well, I have.
13:55You had a little look-see.
13:56They took statins, and they made my legs ache.
13:59Well, here's the interesting thing.
14:01That's why I don't like the headline, give statins to almost all men over 60.
14:05That said the Times, and then they said adding all women over 75 should have statins as well.
14:10The reason I don't like it is that it's very paternalistic.
14:13The idea is we as doctors should give something to you.
14:15It should be your choice these days.
14:16You should look at the risk.
14:17And the thing about statins, yes, there might be a 10% reduction in your risk of having a heart attack over 10 years.
14:22But there's a 10% risk it will give you muscular aches and pains.
14:26And those are side effects you have to put up with every day.
14:29So I don't like any headline that says you have to take something.
14:31You should look at the risks yourself and then decide if you want to take them, whether it's worth it.
14:34So I'm saying let's not have statins every day.
14:37But here's the thing I'm prescribing.
14:39This is the advice of baby Phil.
14:41Baby Phil says clangers every day.
14:44OK, this is baby Phil.
14:45This is me, unbelievably.
14:46My head was bigger than my entire body when I was born.
14:50So baby Phil has given this advice.
14:51These are things you should do every day that don't have side effects.
14:54That will dramatically improve your health.
14:56They're the habits of happy, healthy people.
14:58Connect, learn, be active, notice, give back, eat well, relax, sleep.
15:02So just about all the things you do that are healthy.
15:04Are in this sentence.
15:05Listen to baby Phil.
15:06He's always right.
15:07Thank you very much indeed.
15:08Very good.
15:16Good advice.
15:17Very good.
15:17But thank you, Phil.
15:1932 plays 22.
15:20Owen in the lead.
15:21And Owen, your letters came.
15:24Could I start off with a consonant, please?
15:26Thank you, Owen.

15:28Then a vowel.

15:31And a consonant.

15:43Oh, I meant vowel.
15:44Sorry.
15:45M.
15:45It's OK.
15:46We'll do a vowel next, though, instead.
15:48Owen is right.
15:49I.
15:51And I need another vowel now, don't I?
15:53A vowel, yeah.
15:54If you want.
15:55A.
15:56Just to redress the balance and finish off, then, with a consonant.
16:00And the last one, L.
16:02And the clock starts now.
16:04We'll do it.
16:10We'll do it.
16:11Oh, I've only got an eight there.
16:38Looks good, though.
16:40Dan?
16:41Six.
16:41And that's six.
16:43Postal.
16:44Now, what's this eight you're talking about?
16:46Loamiest.
16:47Yeah, the loamiest soil.
16:50Soil.
16:51Loam.
16:51The dark loam.
16:52Loami soil.
16:53Yeah.
16:53Now, Dr. Phil.
16:55I'm taking a pun.
16:56I don't know if it's a word.
16:57Is milepost a word?
16:59Oh, it's all one word.
16:59Very good.
17:00Really?
17:00Yeah.
17:01There, milepost.

17:03Very good.
17:03Very good.
17:04Well done.

17:08There is more of a classical eight there, Nick.
17:11Septimal.

17:14Indeed.
17:16Okay.
17:17Forty place, twenty-two.

18:43Circus.
18:43Very good.
18:44And in the corner, I only got picture.
18:46You've got a word I've never heard of.
18:48What's that?
18:48Oh, it's a dark igneous rock called Pickwright.
18:52And that would give you another seven.
18:54Geology corner here.
18:55Excellent.
18:56Well done.
18:57Moving on.
18:5847 plays 29 in its Owens numbers game now.
19:01Owens.
19:02Once again, I will go with two large and four small.
19:06Dan, you're in two from the top four a little.
19:08And this time around, they are eight, two, another eight, six, 50, and 75.
19:19And the target, 301.
19:203-0-1.
19:53Owen.
19:54Yeah, that was OK, that one.
19:55And Dan?
19:56Yeah, we can do that.
19:57Thank you, Owen.
19:58OK, so I did 6 minus 2 for my 4.
20:01Yeah.
20:02Multiply that by the 75 for the 300.
20:04300.
20:05And then the 1 was gotten by doing 8 divided by 8.
20:08Lovely, that'll do.
20:09301.
20:10And Dan?
20:10I was slightly different.
20:12I was 50 times 6.
20:14300.
20:168 over 8 is 1.
20:17Yeah, well done.
20:22So 57 plays, 39 as we turn to our second.
20:26Tea time teaser, which is Mini Lover.
20:30And the clue, did he see red after losing an absolute fortune?
20:34Did he see red after losing an absolute fortune?
20:37Welcome back.
20:55I left with the clue, did he see red after losing an absolute fortune?
20:59The answer to that one is vermilion.
21:01Vermilion, a type of red.
21:03How could you best describe vermilion, I wonder?
21:06Vermilion, a brilliant red pigment made from mercury sulphide.
21:10I just, yeah, brilliant red.
21:11It's really vibrant.
21:12Ooh.
21:13And I think a little bit darker, possibly, than crimson or scarlet.
21:18Would a cardinal were vermilion.
21:20And cardinal.
21:21This goes back to vermilion, meaning a worm, because carmine is derived from a worm, which
21:29is called a kermes, the insect.
21:31And I think there was a connection there.
21:33OK.
21:33Is it safe, smearing yourself in mercury sulphide extract?
21:36I doubt it.
21:37Doesn't sound good, does it?
21:38Mad as a hatter.
21:38Yeah.
21:39Oh, yes.
21:39Mad as a hatter.
21:40Very good.
21:41Yeah, mercury poisoning.
21:43Thank you, Doctor.
21:44All right.
21:4557 plays, 39.
21:46Dan.
21:47Dan, your letters game.
21:49A consonant, very crucial.
21:51Thank you, Dan.

23:06I have a rather evil ace.
23:09Right, evil.
23:10Evil.
23:10We look forward to that.
23:11Oh, God.
23:12Dan?
23:13Stains.
23:14I can see it.
23:15And?
23:16Er, satanise, if that's a word.
23:18Yeah.
23:18Yeah.
23:19It is.
23:20It is a word.
23:20It's satanise.
23:21To portray a satanic or evil.
23:24Well, well.
23:26Very good.
23:31And, Dr. Phil?
23:32No, we got satanise.
23:33That was our best.
23:34You've got insane as well.
23:35Yep.
23:36Insane is there, but satanise was our best one too.
23:38Good enough.
23:39Good enough.
23:4065 plays.
23:4139.
23:41Owen.
23:42Come, Owen.

23:44Thanks.

25:00A five, Dan?
25:00Five.
25:02And your five, Owen?
25:03Mine is Barry.
25:05Dan?
25:06Yep, same here.
25:07Cool.
25:07I can see it from there.
25:08You can?
25:08Perfect.
25:09All right.
25:10Can we beat a five, I wonder?
25:12Dr Phil?
25:12Only by one.
25:13We've got Reborn.
25:14Yep.
25:15Which is a six.
25:15I thought re-entry might be one, but apparently you've got to have a hyphen.
25:18Do you have to have a hyphen?
25:19You have to have a hyphen.
25:19Why?
25:20Otherwise it would look very odd on the page.
25:22Re-entry.
25:22Is that the reason for it?
25:24Yeah, almost always.
25:26Really?
25:27Nowadays, because the hyphens are pretty much dropping out, except where it looks very,
25:30very odd.
25:31But there are words where you think a hyphen would help with the spelling, and even those
25:34are going.
25:35So, yeah.
25:37Thank you, Dr Phil.
25:3870, page 44.
25:39And Susie, we're back with you for your origins of words.
25:45Well, as you know, Nick, I'm all for bringing back obsolete words that seem to have a particular
25:50resonance in modern times, and I think we could do with them.
25:53And one of them I was reminded of quite recently that always proves quite popular is ultra-crepidarian,
25:59which is a very odd word, really, and a bit of a mouthful, but it's perfect for somebody
26:05who is a bit of a shot-clog, and a shot-clog is the person in the pub who you only put up
26:09with because they're buying the next round.
26:11And more often than not, if they're the pub board, they will be spouting forth on a subject
26:15about which they know absolutely nothing, and that is your ultra-crepidarian.
26:20It's an uninformed know-it-all.
26:22A politician, in other words.
26:23It could be a politician.
26:24A politician.
26:24There are so many uses for this, I have to say.
26:27But the word has a very classical pedigree, and once you unpack it, it all makes sense.
26:32It goes back to a story, and a comment, really, from a 4th-century Greek painter, and he was
26:38called Apelles, and a shoemaker came to look at his paintings and pointed out that a pair
26:44of sandals that were depicted on the painting were actually incorrectly presented, that a painter
26:49Apelles had not got these sandals particularly right.
26:52And then, because he was pretty much emboldened by his newfound art criticism, he went on
26:58to comment on the entire painting and pointing out little flaws here and there, to which Apelles
27:02replied,
27:03Soutour ne ultra-crepidam, which means shoemaker, do not go beyond the soul.
27:09In other words, don't talk about things.
27:11You can talk about what you know about, but don't talk about anything that you really have
27:14no knowledge of whatsoever.
27:16So an ultra-crepidarian literally means beyond the soul, which I think is a lovely story.
27:20Yeah, I like ultra-crepidarian, I think, as I say, it's very useful for our times.
27:24That is.
27:25Very good.
27:29I used to work for a very wise old consultant who'd always say, look at the patient's shoes,
27:36and the shoes tell you everything about their status, often their socioeconomic status,
27:39and if people could tie their shoelaces.
27:41That's quite a complex thing to do.
27:42If you can bend down, tie your shoelaces, remember to do the rabbit round the tree or whatever,
27:46then you had pretty good neurological function.
27:48So you can tell an awful lot by the state of someone's footwear.
27:50Very interesting.
27:52Thank you, Phil.
27:53Thank you, Dr Phil.
27:5370 plays 44.
27:55And Dan, it's your letters game.
27:58I care.
27:59A, consonants, leave, Rachel.

30:43A seven, and Dan?
30:45Six.
30:46You're six?
30:47Unsane.
30:49Owen?
30:50Novenas.
30:51There's no unsane, I'm afraid, Dan.
30:54Not fair.
30:55Bad luck.
30:56Novenas, very good.
30:58All right.
30:5884 to 44, and Dan, final numbers game for you.
31:02Oh, it's one large five small, why not?
31:06Why not?
31:06Thank you, Dan.
31:07One large five, little to finish the day.
31:09And this selection is eight, one, six, another one, three, and 25, and the target, 596.
31:21Five, nine, six.
31:26Yes, Dan?
31:54Yeah, 596.

31:56Owen?
31:56Yeah, 596.
31:57Let's start with Dan, then.
31:59Yes, Dan?
31:59OK.
32:0025 times three times eight.
32:02600.
32:03Minus this six, add one, add one.
32:07Perfect.
32:07Well done.
32:08596.
32:09And Owen?
32:10I went a different route.
32:11I did 25 by 6.
32:14150.
32:15And then took off a one.
32:17149.
32:18And then we'll play that before.
32:19And where's your four?
32:21Um, oh, it's the one plus three, sorry.
32:23Lovely, that'll do.
32:24Just four melodies, well done.
32:27Well done.
32:27All right.
32:28So, just short of 100 there, 94 playing 54, as we go into the final round, it's conundrum time.
32:37Gentlemen, fingers on buzzers, let's roll today's Countdown Conundrum.
32:46Dan.
32:48Hypocrisy.
32:49Let's see whether you're right.
32:53Hypocrisy.
32:53Well done.
32:54Good man.
33:03Well done, Dan.
33:04They don't come much faster than that.
33:05That's tremendous.
33:06Two and a half seconds, maybe.
33:07Fantastic.
33:09So, 94 to 64, that's the end of the competition today.
33:12And we see Owen progress, but not without a good old battle, Dan.
33:18Thank you very much for coming.
33:20It's good to have you.
33:21Take this goodie bag back to Chester.
33:23Good luck with the writing.
33:24You keep getting those things published.
33:26I hope so.
33:27Thank you very much.
33:28And we shall see you, number six, wearing a number seven tomorrow.
33:33Well done.
33:34Good player.
33:35Thanks very much.
33:35And Dr. Phil, I'll be back.
33:37See you tomorrow.
33:38See you tomorrow.
