00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this Easter Monday.
00:34Now, I could start the show by pretending that Countdown has been cancelled.
00:38I could tell you that Susie Dent quit this morning
00:42after a car park fistfight with Rachel Riley.
00:45I could also tell you I'm departing to host a new BBC Two show
00:48called Counting Down, but they would be downright lies
00:52because, Rachel Riley, it may be April Fool's Day,
00:55but let's stick to the rules. It's after 12.
00:57I thought we could have a quiz with it today.
00:59So I'm going to give you headlines that appeared in newspapers,
01:03but were they April Fool's Day headlines
01:05where the publication was just pulling the leg of the readership,
01:09or were they genuine headlines?
01:11OK.
01:12OK.
01:12Woman accidentally joins search party looking for herself.
01:18I'm sure I've heard this. I think this one's true.
01:20It is true. I love that.
01:21I know.
01:22In the USA.
01:23So is this a real headline or an April Fool's headline?
01:26OK.
01:27Delivery company bans delivering pineapple on pizza.
01:32That's the type of stuff that people would do to get publicity.
01:36It's probably false. You probably made it up,
01:38but I'm going to go true.
01:39It's false.
01:40It was an April Fool's gag in the UK.
01:42And finally, I've been posting my letters in the dog poop box for two years.
01:49I reckon that's probably true.
01:51It's true.
01:52Oh, dear.
01:54And was it you?
01:55Poor guy.
01:56Oh.
01:57Two years.
01:58It's a UK-based story.
01:59It was in the newspapers here in the UK.
02:02Oh, dear.
02:02Oh, I love that.
02:03You never got written back.
02:04All right.
02:06There you go.
02:06Bit of fun to start the show.
02:08As we head over to Dictionary Corner,
02:10and I know she's been here before,
02:12but I am so excited.
02:13First time for me,
02:14because joining our guardian in the dictionary,
02:17Susie Den,
02:18in Dictionary Corner all this week,
02:19it's the performer and poet,
02:22it's the author and animal lover,
02:24it is the amazing Palmers!
02:27Oh, thank you very much.
02:30Thank you, Colin.
02:31Well, Pam, you get to meet two new people today
02:33because we're at our sixth octal champ of the series
02:36on Friday,
02:38so a chance for a new star to be born today.
02:40First of all, we've got Mark Mills,
02:42who's from Stockport.
02:43How are you, sir?
02:44I'm all right, thank you.
02:45A little nervous, but OK.
02:46Rachel recognised you when you walked in the studio,
02:49not because you'd been on Countdown before,
02:51but it's your wife, Tracey.
02:53She did.
02:53She got to the final in 2015.
02:56Oh, you're on a hiding to nothing here.
02:58If I could do half as well as my wife, I'd be happy.
03:00Yeah, and you still won't be the best in your house.
03:02No, definitely not.
03:03Well, best of luck to you.
03:05You're going up against Gillian Beale,
03:06who's with us today.
03:07Hi, Gillian.
03:08Hello.
03:09Now, this is just for Palm Ayers
03:10because Palm loves her countryside.
03:13She loves her conservation
03:14and she loves her National Trust properties as well.
03:16And I know you love visiting them.
03:19You've got a long list.
03:20Tell us about that and tell us your favourite.
03:22We have a lot of National Trust places in the Thumberland,
03:24which is very near to where we live.
03:26And I really like visiting them
03:29because you've got outdoor spaces,
03:31you've got interesting houses to visit,
03:33beautiful grounds, lots of walks,
03:36beautiful gardens too.
03:37Oh, I love it.
03:38Really interesting.
03:38I love it.
03:39Let's forget about this.
03:40Let's just go for a walk.
03:41That'd be lovely.
03:41OK.
03:43Let's do it.
03:43We wouldn't want to be anywhere else right now.
03:45We'll save the walking for later.
03:46Gillian and Mark, best of luck.
03:47So with Tracey's shadow hanging over you, Mark,
03:52let's get some letters.
03:53OK.
03:54Good afternoon, Rachel.

05:19Have a completely different one here.
05:21Pam? We've got steaming coming.
05:23Yes. Yes, we've got steaming over here.
05:26Which is eight. So many different origins of that word, actually.
05:30Because you're probably going to steam engines and the kettle steams.
05:33But where I'm from, a steamer.
05:36That's a bit too much imbibing, Susie.
05:39Steaming drunk. One of thousands of slang words for being drunk.
05:44But yes. What a start. Steaming start of the day. No nines?
05:47Not the weakest. No, sadly not.

14:28Let's get to Dictionary Corner for the first time this week
14:31for an extended chat with the brilliant Pam Ayers.
14:33And we want to start with the most current thing,
14:35and I've worn the jumper just for it,
14:38because your latest book is I Am Hattie the Hare,
14:41and it's part of a series as well, Pam.
14:43Yes, Colin, it is.
14:44It's part of four books for children about four to eight years old.
14:48They're picture books with a rhyming story,
14:51and I was asked to write about our wildlife in its natural habitat,
14:56so it's not about something living in a mushroom or anything,
15:00which I was really pleased about.
15:02And I've tried to make a nice little story
15:05with as much information in it as well,
15:09without sounding like I'm lecturing children.
15:12And the illustrations are by Nicola O'Byrne,
15:15and she is a genius.
15:17They are really beautiful ones.
15:19And the first one was about an otter,
15:22Oliver the Otter,
15:23and this one is about Hattie the Hare.
15:25Yes.
15:26And the next one is Emily the Barn Owl,
15:28and then there's going to be Dandy the Dormouse.
15:31Oh, I love it.
15:31You know, and I try and put lots of information in as well.
15:34So I'll read you a little bit, if I may.
15:36Please do bring it to life.
15:37OK, so you have to imagine I'm a hare.
15:39Hello, my name is Hattie.
15:43I'm a big brown hare.
15:45I don't live in a burrow.
15:47It's too dark for me down there.
15:50I don't live on a riverbank or on the golden sand,
15:53for brown hares are creatures of the wide open land.
15:58Hares are golden brown and bigger than our rabbit friends,
16:02and we have noble noses which are twitchy at the ends.
16:06My tail is called a scut.
16:09It's black above and white below,
16:12and our cousin is the mountain hare who goes white in the snow.
16:17And so it continues.
16:18I won't do the whole thing.
16:19No, it's amazing.
16:21Yeah.
16:22Thanks.
16:23Yes.

19:13Why not? It's Easter Monday, eh?
19:14Mark Mills, how many?
19:15Yeah, went a bit blank there. Just a five.
19:17Five. But my count, though, because Gillian's throwing caution to the wind.
19:20What's the five?

19:22Yes.

20:04The numbers has been the problem, Mr Mills, so far.
20:06Let's see if you can do better this time around.
20:08Two last, please, Rachel.
20:10Thank you, Mark.
20:10Two from the top, four little.
20:13Coming up, their time's a charm.
20:15These ones, two, nine, five, nine.
20:19And the big ones, 25 and 50.
20:22With the target, 912.
20:25Nine, one, two, numbers up.
20:26We're going to go.
20:29We're going to go.
20:33Moral
20:41Big target there, Mark? 9-11.
21:00One away. Gillian? 9-10.
21:02Two away. So, Mark, off you go for seven points.
21:05Two times nine is 18. Yes.
21:08Times 50 is 900.
21:10Uh-huh.
21:12At the nine and...
21:13Take away the nine and the five.
21:15Oh, at the 25 and take...
21:179-25 and take away the five and the...
21:20Yeah, well done.
21:21Yep, that closes the gap significantly.
21:24It was nervy, but he got there.
21:26What about 9-12 there, Rich?
21:28Yes, I found a way.
21:29If you say 50 times nine is 450,
21:34take away the second nine is 441,
21:37times that by two for 882,
21:40and at the 25 and the five, 9-12.
21:46It's really ebbing and flowing today, isn't it?
21:48Six rounds left when we come back after this tea time teaser,
21:52which is mad cheer, mad cheer.
21:55The politician took steps sometime before April.
21:58The politician took steps sometime before April.
22:02Hello again, mad cheer becomes de marche,
22:20which I know is political manoeuvring,
22:22but I'm not quite sure I pronounced that right, Susie.
22:24Yes, it comes from the French des marchés,
22:27meaning to take steps,
22:28and it means a political step or an initiative.
22:31OK, well, Gillian needs to take steps
22:33to stop the rot, so to speak,
22:35because even though you've got a two-point lead,
22:37it's been three unanswered rounds from Mark Mills.
22:40Let's see if that changes now, Gillian.
22:42You're up.
22:42Can I start with a consonant, please?
22:44Thank you, Gillian.
22:45D.
22:46And a vowel, please.

23:28Five, not written down.
23:32That's OK, because she is six.
23:47What have you got?
23:48Coop or coupe?
23:49Coupe.
23:50And for you, Jillian?
23:51Copied.
23:52Copied?
23:52She's done exactly that.
23:54I stopped the rot.
23:55Well done.
23:55I've got ick up, but I couldn't find an H, unfortunately.
24:02But, um, Susie's come up with one, but I would not attempt to pronounce it, so I'm going to hand it over.
24:09Go on, Deb.
24:10Yes, F-U-C-O-I-D, fucoid, and it is a brown seaweed, and it belongs to a group which includes bladderwrack, and that's a really common kind of brown seaweed, very buoyant.
24:22OK.
24:23Still in that crucial countdown, conundrum territory, so late in the game, which is good.
24:28And Mark, you're up.

25:26A lot going on there. How did you get on, Mark?
25:37Eight. Brilliant. And Gillian?
25:39Seven. Seven. What a game this is.
25:42Gillian, the seven? Slaters.
25:44Slaters. And for you, Mark?
25:45Rustlers. And Rustlers.
25:48Very good indeed. Wonderful.
25:50Yeah, well done.
25:50It brings us all level at 49 points apiece.
25:56Did you rustle up anything else?
25:58We've got Saluters.
26:00That's for eight as well.
26:01Yeah, which is also eight.
26:03Fantastic. Well done.
26:04Saluters for eight. Rustlers.
26:07Even Stevens, four rounds to go on a break for Origins of Words.
26:11Are we on the emails this week,
26:12or have you dreamt up something yourself?
26:14We are on my own choice today.
26:17Just because I was thinking about this recently,
26:21particularly because I do quite a lot of work with guide dogs,
26:24wonderful guide dogs,
26:26who help, obviously, those not just with complete sight loss
26:29and not just with dogs, actually, either.
26:32They help in many different ways,
26:33often not involving the beautiful, beautiful dogs that they breed.
26:37But maybe think about eye conditions
26:39and where they get their names from.
26:42And I thought I'd start with the lens of the eye
26:45that actually was so-called by the Romans from the Latin for a lentil
26:50because the lens of the eye is lentil-shaped,
26:53which I think is quite cute.
26:55I have talked many times on Countdown about the pupil of the eye
26:59and the beautiful etymology there from the Latin for little doll
27:01because you see a little doll-like reflection of yourself
27:04when you look into someone else's eyes,
27:06which I always think is quite profound.
27:08Glaucoma is another one that I didn't really realise.
27:11It has an interesting backstory.
27:14So, a glaucoma comes from the Greek for an owl, believe it or not,
27:18because the bird was thought to have eyes similar in colour
27:22to those suffering from glaucoma
27:24because you get a sort of clouding of the lens
27:26and sometimes the eye can get darker.
27:28So, somebody thought, this looks like an owl,
27:31that there's very, very particular eyes that you will see in an owl.
27:35So, I thought that one was quite beautiful as well.
27:37What a start to the week. Thank you.
27:39APPLAUSE
27:39Well, I know Susie's going to be here tomorrow
27:43and I know that Palmage and Rachel and myself
27:45no idea whether it's going to be Mark or Gillian
27:48because we are even, Stephens.
27:49Four rounds left. Let's do it, Gillian.
27:52Start with a consonant again, please.
27:53Thank you, Gillian.

30:39Gruel.
30:39And the risky six.
30:41Glue-ier.
30:43Denticles, can something be glue-ier?
30:45It absolutely can.
30:47Wow, it's stuck.
30:48Wow.
30:49Yes.
30:49Well done.
30:50Did not expect that.
30:51Well done.
30:52Six-point lead, Pam.
30:54Well, I only came up with a five, but it's quite a nice one.
30:57It's choir from Riemann Choir, the way they used to measure paper.
31:01Yes, absolutely.
31:02So I was quite pleased with that one.
31:04And Susie's got a better one.
31:07Well, not quite as nice as choir in my book.
31:09Liquor.
31:10Liquor.
31:10Well, you know, patina patata.
31:14Right, liquor for six, but the one that counted.
31:17What a choice that was.
31:18Glue-ier.
31:19You took the gamble, it's paid off.
31:21Six-point lead, two rounds left.
31:23Gillian, last number.
31:25I think I'll just stick with the one from the top, please.
31:27One from the top.
31:28Put all your eggs in the conundrum basket.
31:31Let's see how that strategy works.
31:33Final numbers today.
31:34Nine, eight, four, five, six.
31:38And the large one, 50.
31:40And the target, 455.

32:27All right, here we go.
32:30It felt destined to end up in a crucial countdown conundrum,
32:34didn't it?
32:34It is Easter Monday,
32:36but who is going to finish this show ecstatic
32:39and who is going to crack first?
32:42Fingers on buzzers as we reveal this Easter Monday crucial
32:46countdown conundrum.

33:28Well done.
33:29APPLAUSE
33:30Well, Gillian, you're back to Northumberland

33:39Well, it was a good game.
33:40We love that.
33:41We love when it's close.
33:42I like it's close, yeah.
33:44A lot of nerves when there's no champion.
33:46Everyone, and especially at the start, Mark,
33:48I think the shadow of Tracey being an octo-champ,
33:51your wife, I think being on national TV,
33:54you had a lot of nerves.
33:55I did, definitely.
33:56Yeah.
33:57Definitely.
33:57They've not gone yet.
33:59We'll see what you're like tomorrow, same time.

34:07Exactly the same teapot all these years later.
34:12That's it.

34:14Look forward to it.
