CGTN Europe interviewed Jean-Pierre Raffarin, former Prime Minister of France
Transcript
00:00Jean-Pierre Raffarin is the former French Prime Minister.
00:05This visit is very important. I think Mr Wangli has a very good image in France.
00:13He has a lot of friends. The new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barreau,
00:18has a friendly relation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs from China.
00:25So it's a very good period. We have some discussion about difficult subjects, difficult topics, just like cognac, for example.
00:34But I think that solution is a good way.
00:37And I think that we have also a big visit of the French President to China for the next October.
00:48So we have a lot of things to discuss with Mr Wangli.
00:51He is very welcoming in France, and I think his visit will be positive.
00:56Yes, as you say, still lots to discuss. Negotiations continue.
01:01How would you describe EU-China relations currently?
01:04Well, we have a lot of niposity right now in the world, and I think the period is difficult.
01:10We have a question of electric vehicles, and we have a lot of difficulties like that.
01:16But we think that we like to have a very long view, to have mid-term vision.
01:23We need to discuss for the future. I think that we have very common vision for the future.
01:29For example, for a new multilateralism. But which multilateralism?
01:33So we have to discuss of the future, not always discussing for the subject of today.
01:41Today we have some competition and interests. That's no more.
01:46So if we have not a common vision for the future, it's difficult to have agreement in the actuality.
01:53So I think that we need to have a strategic discussion with China what kind of governance we want for the world is the next future.
02:04Absolutely. And you mentioned that there are sticking points. You mentioned Cognac. You mentioned China's concern about the tariffs on their electric vehicles.
02:14Discussions are ongoing. How do we get to a point of a mutually beneficial partnership between the two?
02:24I think that common vision is a main point. But the second point is very important to have a special relationship between China and France.
02:33We are a very cultural country. We have a lot of common vision. And of course, we have a very high level of diversity.
02:45But I think that we have to maintain a very close relationship between France and China and could be very useful to have better relations with Europe.
02:57So, the overall butter is a lot better.
02:59We are kind ofừ ella's greatest friends and much more.
03:15Well, given that we are at home, we aresmithing for the entire act.
