CGTN Europe spoke to Adam Dunnett Secretary General of EU Chamber of Commerce in China
Transcript
00:00Well, Adam Dunn is Secretary General of the EU Chamber of Commerce in China.
00:06I mean, this is a high level of visit.
00:09So visits of this nature, obviously a lot of work and preparation goes into it.
00:14Both Wang Yi and Caius have met each other before,
00:18so there's some familiarity when they saw each other in February.
00:21But this is an important lead up to the EU-China summit that's taking place next month as well.
00:27So it helps set the groundwork for that meeting.
00:30And then, of course, from a geopolitical point of view,
00:33many of the issues that I expect for them to be discussing are very important to both EU and China as well.
00:39The China-EU relationship hasn't been terribly robust for a good time now.
00:44Where are we, would you say, in this relationship just at this moment?
00:50Well, I mean, to be honest, we're at a, people might call it a crossroads.
00:54We're in a difficult place, to be honest.
00:56There's a whole slew of issues that the EU business community has,
01:00and in particular, I'd say the EU Commission, more than anything else right now, has with China.
01:06Obviously, there's the trade deficit, there's market access issues, procurement.
01:10And probably the biggest issue that we're facing, our members here,
01:13the most acute issue at this moment, is export controls on rare earths and magnets,
01:19which are essential for European production in Europe and elsewhere around the world, for that matter.
01:24What does the EU want out of this visit?
01:27The EU Commission?
01:31I mean, I think for this specific visit, again, because they're going to be talking about a lot of, you know,
01:36security and geopolitical issues, I would say the number one issue has to be Ukraine.
01:42For the EU, let's be clear, this is an existential issue.
01:46It's been going on for over three years.
01:48I think there isn't the level of understanding in China about how important this is for Ukraine and for the rest of Europe.
01:55So I think anything that could improve the situation there would be the number one outcome that the EU is looking for.
02:02And then secondly, the trade deficit, the mounting trade deficit,
02:07is still a very, very important issue for people back in the EU and for businesses there.
02:13And then let's make sure that it's no range of the help of the EU.
02:19However, what happenedìš© can be said.
02:21So, we have a deep differentiated one make a piece of time around the EU to get them yourself.
02:23The US to achieve this comes to have this scheme of data,
02:25and we've been able to really appreciate that the EU of the EU momentos where the EU looks like on the EU,
02:29and that we don'taton model how big, you know,
02:32the EU underbeing.
02:33There is no way to Lucifer.
02:34What is the EU market effort on the EU market that we can imagine around the EU market rather than this has been around the EU.
02:38zwç½® Things in a tutte, then we don't even have this channel information around it.
