00:00This is where many spectators were sitting, some suffered burns, others were hit by projectiles like this.
00:05Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at reported cases of 4th of July celebrations or preparations that went horribly wrong.
00:13A fireworks accident killed a man on the 4th of July in South Carolina.
00:19Car Wash Wipeout
00:20Danielle Bars worked at a Detroit car wash, where she decided to set off commercial quality fireworks without permission in the parking lot.
00:28This was the first in a series of unwise decisions.
00:32Bars wasn't in safe proximity when one firework ignited, literally blowing up in her face.
00:38Detective Mike Welch described the explosive that hit Bars as, quote, a 3-inch mortar bomb.
00:44More than 20 additional mortars were ignited in the process, rendering rescue efforts difficult as sparks flew.
00:51Making the experience even more traumatic, Bars died with her young son and fiancé present.
00:57A few others were also in the area, including another woman who helped Bars with the illegal explosives, which were supposedly imported from China.
01:05Cannon Fodder
01:06During the early hours of July 5th, 2006, a man was rushed to the ER after losing most of their left-middle finger.
01:13The resident who relayed this incident to the Darwin Awards initially assumed this was a firework accident, typical of the holiday.
01:21To his surprise, the patient was also covered in gunpowder, having fired a homemade cannon.
01:27Following a night of drinking, the man and his wife decided to finish off the leftover gunpowder with one last bang.
01:34He was smoking while doing so, prematurely igniting the cannon as he packed the powder with a broomstick, which shot back at him.
01:41According to the doctor, the amputation led the man to ask how he'd drive without a middle finger.
01:49Jet ejection
01:50What sounds like something out of a cartoon was an all-too-real tragedy from 1980.
01:55At a 4th of July air show in Philadelphia, a young John Pigford ejected himself from a Navy jet.
02:06The S3 Viking was put on display, but proved more functional than anticipated.
02:11Enduring head trauma and serious burns, Pigford was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbs to his injuries.
02:17Several others, including Pigford's brother, were injured during the blast, although there were no other reported casualties.
02:23A Navy spokesperson claimed that the seat ejection required a few complex maneuvers, commenting,
02:29quote,
02:29How the child was able to carry it out, I do not know.
02:33What we want to know is why the jet wasn't fully disarmed before letting civilians in.
02:38Do or dive
02:39If you're diving into your pool, we'd strongly advise not doing it from the patio roof.
02:45Jump or jump!
02:47Jump or jump!
02:49You got it!
02:50That's what a man from Houston did on July 4th, 1998, via the Darwin Awards.
02:56While leaping from that height wasn't the wisest move, the man's true folly was failing to consider how deep the water was.
03:03The above-ground pool, which was installed the previous month, had a depth of only 4 feet.
03:09The man was 6 feet tall.
03:11Do the math.
03:12He sadly didn't, diving in head first.
03:15Legal action was taken against the contractor who put in the pool.
03:19The plaintiffs blamed the location and installation, despite previously rating the service excellent.
03:24Meanwhile, the jumper died the following December.
03:28Scotstown, Ohio Fire
03:30During his teenage years, Todd Hall suffered a skateboarding accident that sent him into a coma.
03:36Hall remained unresponsive for weeks, with a fraction of his brain having to be removed.
03:41Hall survived.
03:43But almost a decade later, in 1996, he tossed a lit cigarette onto a shelf of fireworks in an occupied store.
03:51While it's hard to say what exactly prompted Hall to do this, some believe it was supposed to be a prank.
03:57In any case, the ensuing fire killed 9 and injured 11.
04:01There was a lot of lives changed that day.
04:03Hall was deemed incompetent to stand trial, instead being sent to a mental hospital.
04:09The tragedy continues to loom over the Scotstown, Ohio area every 4th of July.
04:13As for Hall, he passed away in 2015.
04:16But if there's anything that hasn't changed, it's that feeling of heartbreak experienced by those who lost someone on that fateful day.
04:24Uncle Sam splodes.
04:26For his 4th of July block party in 2024, Alan Ray McGrew wanted to go all out.
04:32Dressing up as Uncle Sam and dancing while smoking a cigarette wasn't enough.
04:37He put on a fireworks display, which fatally backfired when McGrew made himself part of the show.
04:42The South Carolina local put an ignited firework atop his red, white, and blue hat.
04:48The hat didn't provide the protective barrier that McGrew apparently expected, costing him his life.
04:5341-year-old Alan McGrew ignited a large firework device and set it upon his head.
05:00If only he'd been wearing his thinking cap.
05:02Alan's wife tried to warn her husband, who was seen as a showboater, but it was too late to stop what was already happening.
05:08Shortly before his death, McGrew called his wife his rock, and his son his heart.
05:14Hog Heist
05:15Another story confirmed true by the Darwin Awards, this automobile accident occurred on July 4th, 1991.
05:24Three men named Ashley, Billy, and James spent the holiday drinking and igniting fireworks when they got a hankering for pork chops.
05:31Rather than go to the local butcher, the boys drove to a farm, hell-bent on stealing a hog.
05:37They startled one 400-pound porker, causing a stampede of swine.
05:46The farmer chased them off with his shotgun, but the trio still managed to nab the hog.
05:52They almost made a clean getaway, until the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing all three unbuckled men to be ejected.
06:00The only survivor was the pig, which had been dragged down the road for nearly half a mile.
06:05Pikachu Firework
06:07Fireworks isn't a part of Pikachu's learn set.
06:11At least, it wasn't, until YouTuber iShowSpeed came along.
06:15While Speed has a reputation for being dramatic, he went overboard, even for him, on July 4th, 2022.
06:22Speed lit a Pikachu-shaped firework.
06:24In his room.
06:26On his bed.
06:27Let's light the Pikachu one, y'all.
06:29Even if it was just a sparkler, as Speed seemingly suspected, this would have been a safety hazard.
06:35The firework was more powerful than anticipated, blowing Pikachu's lid.
06:40Speed sped off to find his mother, as the explosive only grew more out of control, firing from different directions and falling off the bed.
06:48The room continued to fill with smoke before a firefighter arrived on the scene.
06:52What happened, a firework went off?
06:56Yeah, a firework went off, then it just, like, went boom.
06:58Like, it's all went on.
07:01We wonder if the Squirtle Squad ever had this kind of problem.
07:05Matisse Kivlenyekes.
07:07A professional ice hockey goalie whose career spanned Latvia's Prisma Riga, the Cleveland Monsters, and the Columbus Blue Jackets, Matisse Kivlenyekes was trained to be on his guard.
07:17Defending oneself from a hockey puck is one thing, but fireworks are another story.
07:22The Latvian native experienced his first and last Independence Day in 2021 while visiting his coach's Michigan home.
07:29Police say they got a call about an injury at a private residence Sunday, just after 10 p.m.
07:34In addition to the fourth, Kivlenyekes was there to celebrate the coach's daughter's wedding.
07:39This happy occasion turned lethal when a firework tipped over and struck Kivlenyekes.
07:44Enduring severe chest trauma, the Blue Jackets player's death was ruled an accident.
07:49Apparently it caused some internal damage.
07:52Fans, loved ones, and teammates paid tribute to Kivlenyekes amid this devastating loss.
07:58The number 80 remains a symbol of his memory.
08:01Patriotic tetanus.
08:03This next one is more of a phenomenon than a singular accident, but it's a chaotic part of Independence Day history that fits our criteria.
08:12Firework-related injuries on the fourth aren't a modern trend.
08:16They can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
08:20Back then, fireworks brought another risk that isn't as common today, thanks to vaccines.
08:25In short, explosives caused injuries, which caused infections like tetanus.
08:31So many people contracted tetanus due to Fourth of July mishaps that it came to be known as Patriotic Tetanus or Patriotic Jaw Lock.
08:39In 1903 alone, there were over 400 reported deaths linked to Patriotic Tetanus.
08:45Tetanus can be more easily treated and prevented now, but there's still no cure for recklessness.
08:51The beginning of a stay safe campaign.
08:54When handling fireworks, a person's life can change in a literal flash.
08:58In 2017, Aiden Valdez was at a neighborhood block party for the fourth.
09:02One second, the Colorado teenager had a firework in his right hand.
09:06The next, there was a bright spark, and Valdez's ears were ringing.
09:10Next thing I knew, it blows up, and my ears are ringing, and then everything's white.
09:18Finding his bearings, Valdez realized his ears weren't the worst of his worries.
09:22Valdez lost four fingers on his left hand, as well as his left eye.
09:26He required four surgeries.
09:28But Valdez hasn't allowed this loss to hold him back.
09:31Valdez continued to pursue his passion for wrestling, competing in national tournaments.
09:36He became an advocate for firework safety, giving away 1,500 safety glasses.
09:41Valdez also created a coloring book full of safety tips.
09:44I just want to spread the word so it doesn't happen to any other kids.
09:49National Mall Firework Frenzy.
09:51Thousands of fireworks will light the D.C. skies during what's expected to be a breathtaking event.
09:57It doesn't get more patriotic than fireworks in Washington, D.C., but the National Mall became a war zone in 1987.
10:05Kathy Eldreth was about 60 yards from the fenced-off safety zone when a flame landed on her blanket.
10:10Putting it out, Eldreth was struck in the back by a fireball the size of a softball.
10:15Eldreth was then helicoptered to the hospital, where she was treated for third-degree burns.
10:20She was one of four in the area who were hospitalized for similar injuries, while 25 more were taken to the Red Cross.
10:26Moisture in the air likely contributed to these unforeseen accidents.
10:30Over a decade later, there were still reports of children, quote,
10:33chasing the charred bits of firework paper that fell in a rain of ash.
10:38Anne says you'll see the skies rain in gold willows before the rapid-fire grand finale.
10:44A spark goes out too soon.
10:46Fire departments say without a permit, there's still too many dangers.
10:50Before even turning 21, Austin McLeod was married with a son and stepson.
10:55Only a few months after tying the knot with his new wife,
10:58McLeod was gearing up for their Independence Day festivities in the backyard.
11:02Tragically, this was the last holiday the young husband and father would celebrate with his family.
11:07McLeod planned a fireworks display for their cookout when the explosives unexpectedly went off,
11:12striking him in the head and neck.
11:14The multi-shelled launcher is believed to have malfunctioned.
11:17When McLeod went to check it, his fate was sealed.
11:20An ambulance arrived on the scene, but by the time McLeod arrived at the hospital, he was gone.
11:25The brightest little light.
11:26The community of Kaysville is in shock following a very serious incident that canceled Fourth of July events for the city.
11:34From a young age, Marcy Hill was known for spreading cheer, becoming a proud member of the Patriot Cheer All-Stars in Utah.
11:41As her GoFundMe campaign would state,
11:44Marcy passed away doing what she loved, being with her team.
11:48Hill was reportedly on a float performing with her team during the Kaysville Fourth of July parade.
11:52While trying to get candy from a trailer, she was pulled under the tires.
11:57Hill was taken to the hospital in critical condition, sadly never recovering.
12:01An investigation found no wrongdoing on behalf of the vehicle's driver or the parade organizers,
12:06but new safety measures were implemented going forward.
12:09Leaving behind her parents and three older brothers, Hill is remembered as, quote,
12:13I was heartbroken. I thought it was really just, it was tragic and it was just really sad.
12:21Anarchy on Sixth Street Bridge.
12:23Now attend scenes of Independence Day chaos on L.A.'s Sixth Street Bridge as the celebrating gets out of control in dangerous ways.
12:32For some, it isn't Fourth of July without illegal fireworks.
12:35But how far is too far?
12:37Wherever the line is, it was definitely crossed in 2023, when a group turned L.A.'s Sixth Street Bridge into the Wild West.
12:44Chaos and carelessness as revelers shot off illegal fireworks,
12:48climbed the viaduct's arches,
12:50and sped on the wrong side of the road.
12:53People set off fireworks across the bridge,
12:56with one civilian packing what looked like a homemade rocket launcher.
12:59The chaos didn't end there.
13:01The mob was seen climbing the viaduct's arches while cars drove on the wrong side of the road.
13:07While many were endangered, there were no reported injuries.
13:10On any other night, this might have attracted the full force of the local authorities.
13:14Being July 4th, though, fires were put out all over L.A.,
13:18making it easier for the bridge blowout to escalate.
13:21Instant ignition.
13:22What started as a day of celebration?
13:25Everybody's probably having grill-outs.
13:27Families come together.
13:29Quickly turned into a nightmare.
13:31Not all fireworks are the same.
13:34Some are designed to be ignited manually,
13:36allowing a person enough time to reach a safe distance after lighting the fuse.
13:40This is not the kind that came into Brian Simpson's possession.
13:44The 48-year-old Kentucky man got his hands on a commercial-grade firework
13:48that was meant to be set off electronically.
13:51Whether or not Simpson knew this,
13:52he made the ill-advised decision to detonate it with a homemade mortar tube,
13:56cutting the wick in half.
13:58Without delay, the firework exploded right in front of Simpson,
14:02the injuries proving fatal.
14:04There's a lot that Simpson could have done differently,
14:06but if there's one takeaway from this cautionary tale,
14:09it's to always check the instructions.
14:11Florence man is dead after trying to light off a commercial-grade firework
14:16in his driveway at a 4th of July gathering.
14:18Truck explosion.
14:19Blackburn Warner was a junior firefighter that day,
14:22just 15 years old,
14:24when 680 pounds of fireworks were accidentally set off inside a truck 30 yards away from him.
14:31We're all familiar with the phrase,
14:33the show must go on.
14:34This was easier said than done for Ocracoke Island in 2009.
14:39The community was getting ready for their annual 4th of July fireworks display.
14:43Around 9 a.m. though,
14:44the truck carrying the fireworks blew up,
14:47claiming the lives of four workers inside.
14:49A fifth person in the back of the truck managed to escape,
14:52albeit with burns on his face and hands.
14:55Needless to say, there wasn't a fireworks show that night,
14:58or the following year,
14:59or the year after that.
15:01Seven years passed until fireworks returns to Ocracoke.
15:04With new laws helping to prevent another tragedy,
15:07the island decided to bring back this tradition in hopes of boosting tourism.
15:10Horn hopes this year's show will pave the way for future celebrations,
15:14and help restore a tradition on the island.
15:17Salute Cannon.
15:18Now, this incident happened sometime after 11 p.m. yesterday,
15:22near the corner of Main and 160th Street here in Park Township.
15:25Technically, this incident occurred in the late hours of July 3rd, 2023,
15:30but those involved were clearly getting into the 4th of July spirit.
15:33By midnight, the celebration had burst into a disaster.
15:37When authorities arrived at the Park Township neighborhood,
15:40houses and cars were damaged, with fireworks present.
15:43Nine people were injured,
15:44and a woman named Jana Daniels lost her life.
15:47Upon further inspection,
15:49the authorities realized that commercial fireworks weren't responsible.
15:52An inebriated Anthony John Meyer
15:55had lit a salute cannon full of gunpowder.
15:57The explosion damaged several nearby homes and cars.
16:01The cause is still under investigation.
16:03Although his homemade device was only supposed to make a loud boom,
16:06it ultimately exploded,
16:08sending metal pieces flying.
16:09While Daniels' death was deemed an accident,
16:12Meyer was sentenced to a year in jail with probation and community service.
16:16If I could go back and reverse it, I would.
16:23Unfortunately, we all have to live with this for the rest of our lives.
16:28A viral boom.
16:29This was not the fireworks show that anybody expected that night.
16:34And yeah, we talked to the family,
16:35and they said that they watched as 4th of July turned their driveway into a war zone.
16:41Many 4th of July incidents make headlines,
16:44but only a handful are captured on camera.
16:46This Nebraska family wasn't looking to go viral when they lit fireworks in their front yard.
16:51One firework didn't go up as planned,
16:53sending sparks flying in all directions.
16:55Just as the situation seemed to defuse,
16:58all hell broke loose.
16:59That one firework ignited the other fireworks in a box behind the minivan,
17:04sending the family running from the blast.
17:06Although the SimpliSafe home security system recorded the whole thing,
17:10the family had no intention of sharing the footage.
17:13Somehow, the video wound up on Reddit,
17:15spreading like wildfire.
17:16Remaining anonymous,
17:18the family informed the press that nobody was injured.
17:20Perhaps even more astonishing,
17:22the minivan is still fully functional.
17:24There was actually no injuries.
17:26Everyone is well.
17:29No property damage.
17:31So yeah, we're lucky.
17:33Shark attack.
17:34A Long Island beach closed to swimmers after a shark sighting.
17:38It's coming right by here.
17:40We like to tell ourselves that Jaws was only a movie,
17:42but shark attacks on the 4th of July aren't unheard of.
17:46Visiting Fire Island with a couple of friends,
17:48Ludmilla Emog took a dip in the shallow waters,
17:51letting out a scream of pain.
17:52Emog felt as if she had been ensnared in a trap.
17:56I screamed to my friends,
17:57something is biting me.
17:58I felt like I was in a trap.
17:59It was holding onto me.
18:01It wasn't long until Emog realized this trap was the jaws of a shark.
18:05Thankfully, it wasn't a great white.
18:07According to Emog's friends,
18:09the beast was between four and five feet long.
18:11The circumstances were alarming nonetheless,
18:13but Emog kept her cool.
18:15She was super calm, right?
18:16Like, this is not what you expect from shark bites,
18:19or bites in general.
18:20Reaching into the shark's mouth,
18:21she freed herself and returned to shore with minor injuries.
18:25Emog considers herself lucky,
18:27especially considering what went down on Amity Island,
18:30the boat blowout.
18:31Uh, saw one of the boats that caught on fire.
18:33Actually, I had a co-worker say that one of the boats was on fire,
18:36so I rushed, jumped on the forklift as quick as I could.
18:39Sharks might keep some people out of the water on the 4th of July,
18:43but there's another dangerous foe we constantly underestimate.
18:46Fireworks.
18:46In 2013, 18 boats were damaged by fire near the Skylaunch marina on Lake Union,
18:53resulting in $1.5 million worth of damage.
18:56The Seattle Fire Department determined that the blaze stemmed from illegal fireworks,
19:01which were shot off from a hill not too far away from the marina.
19:04The annual fireworks display at Lake Union is typically a lovely sight,
19:08but spectators got more than they bargained for that year.
19:11The only upside is that nobody was killed or seriously injured,
19:14with just one firefighter suffering a minor knee injury.
19:17I gave it a shot, and then I just had to leave it up to the fire department at that point, you know.
19:21No one got hurt, so that was great.
19:23When sparklers attack.
19:24Fourth of July celebration takes a dangerous turn in Claremont County.
19:28Seven people were hurt, some of them seriously injured.
19:31Sometimes it just takes a tiny little spark to make a big boom.
19:35A group of people in Ohio learned this the hard way one fateful Fourth of July.
19:40As roughly 20 individuals partied inside,
19:42several children played outside with sparklers.
19:45When a spark from one of the sparklers landed in a bag full of unused fireworks,
19:49a recipe for disaster was ignited.
19:52The fireworks went off, and a total of seven people were reportedly injured.
19:55One woman was left with serious burns covering half of her body,
19:59while the person hurt the worst was a little girl.
20:01While they recover, investigators are looking into the possibility of charges.
20:07An instant tragedy.
20:08Now, a lot of people in the town of Calais say they're just speechless and in shock and disbelief.
20:13Whenever fireworks are set off in an unsafe manner, there's a huge risk for injury or an even worse occurrence.
20:20Tragically, a man named Devin Staples lost his life in a terrible pyrotechnic accident.
20:25He died while setting off fireworks with his friends on the Fourth of July, 2015.
20:29The actor had decided to place a reloadable fireworks mortar tube on top of his head.
20:34Shortly after igniting the firework, Staples died instantly in what his brother described as a freak accident.
20:40The terrible incident left his family and friends devastated on what was intended to be a joyful occasion.
20:45He definitely left the party, that's for sure.
20:50Explosives in Central Park.
20:51The investigation into a bizarre explosion in Central Park that seriously injured a young man from Virginia.
20:57Over the Fourth of July weekend in 2016, college student Connor Golden was climbing down a rock in Central Park.
21:04As misfortune would have it, the teenage tourist stepped on a handmade, shock-sensitive explosive that was inside a black plastic bag.
21:12The impact caused the explosive to detonate, blowing off Golden's foot.
21:16The blast was so loud that it interrupted the nearby funeral service for Elie Wiesel, a Nobel Prize winner and Holocaust survivor.
21:23Golden's left leg was subsequently amputated, although he would walk again with the use of a prosthetic leg, paid for partially via Kickstarter.
21:32The moral of the story? Always watch your step and never leave explosives lying around.
21:37This was an explosive device that was placed or put in this area with a specific intent to harm any individual.
21:44Tragedy on the water.
21:45It's a tragedy for us to see something like this happen.
21:49This is probably the worst accident that I've seen in my 11 years.
21:52The fireworks fiasco in Seattle might have ruined boats, but property damage is inconsequential compared to the loss of a human life.
22:00After a Miami fireworks show wrapped up, tragedy struck the Dinner Key Marina, where three boats collided in a catastrophic crash.
22:0822 individuals were involved in the crash, which ultimately claimed the lives of Andy Garcia, Kelsey Karpjak, Victoria Dempsey, and Jason Soleimani.
22:18In addition to those four fatalities, seven were left injured.
22:21Given the scorching July weather, it's no wonder the sea calls out to many people on the 4th of July.
22:27Accidents like this will motivate anybody to stay on dry land, though.
22:30The families of everyone involved with this are still trying to piece together exactly what happened and what caused this to happen.
22:37Some of them are forced to plan funerals at this time.
22:41Simi Valley fireworks fail.
22:43In towns across America, an estimated 14,000 fireworks shows, with this one north of Los Angeles, suddenly turning terrifying.
22:51When people are messing around with fireworks at home, there's obviously going to be some risk involved.
22:55When people attend a professional fireworks display open to the public, though, they expect things to go off without a hitch.
23:01This wasn't the case in Simi Valley, California, where a 2013 fireworks show resulted in a major 4th of July fail.
23:09A pyrotechnic shell went off in its mortar tube, causing a chain reaction that sent fireworks blasting towards an audience of thousands.
23:17The area suddenly turned into a combat zone, leaving dozens injured, although fortunately, nobody was killed.
23:23Firefighters and medics immediately on the scene, 36 people injured.
23:28The Perilous Parade
23:29Like firework shows, parades are an Independence Day tradition for numerous families.
23:35In 2013, however, the Liberty Fest 4th of July parade ended tragically for one family.
23:41On a busy street in Edmond, Oklahoma, Quinton Hooper drove a float with several karate students on board.
23:48Among the students was Hooper's young son, Aiden, who fell off the flatbed trailer and was accidentally run over by the float.

24:10Following the unspeakable nightmare, Quinton and his wife Susanna have strived to keep their son's memory alive through the Aiden Hooper Legacy Fund.
24:18The coach adds the boy's family wants people to know they don't blame anyone for what happened.
24:23Long Island car crash
24:25Tonight, as survivors of the crash recover, police are trying to figure out how this happened.
24:29While the water isn't always the safest place to be on the 4th of July, the roads aren't much better.
24:34Speeding down a slippery street in Long Island, Gustave Geier swerved his 1990 Chevy pickup truck into another lane.
24:42The truck crashed into a 2014 Nissan Ultima with four adults and a baby boy inside.
24:47In a no-passing zone, at what's described as a high rate of speed, above the speed limit.
24:53Thus ensued a fatal collision that not only claimed Geier's life, but also killed three of the Ultima's passengers.
24:59The baby, who had a few minor injuries, and his mother, who was left with life-threatening burns, were the only survivors.
25:06According to reports, Geier had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit.

25:27Jesse William Burley
25:28Police identified the victim as Jesse William Burley.
25:32This accident is so brutal and bizarre that it sounds like something out of a Coen Brothers movie.
25:37Especially seeing how it took place in Fargo, North Dakota.
25:41According to eyewitnesses, 41-year-old Jesse William Burley walked into the middle of the street to set off a 4th of July firework.
25:49He lit it up, a puff of smoke appeared, and then boom!
25:52Resident Chris Hansen immediately rushed to his neighbor's aid, only to find that Burley had been beheaded.
25:58Hansen later stated that the fireworks came with a warning that read,
26:02If found, please report to the U.S. government.
26:05Authorities are not sure if the firework was bought in a store or homemade,
26:09but they think it was some type of mortar style of firework.
