00:00Well, shall I begin?
00:01Okay, you want to start?
00:02I also love that in this moment, all the folks with us are getting like a real inside peek
00:08at the way scene partners work.
00:11Yeah, that's true.
00:12This is kind of what we did, you know, back then is to sit and bring all of these questions
00:18we've been thinking about, you know, into our rehearsal room and our table reads and
00:22our cast dinners and, you know, mornings over coffee on set.
00:28It's like this, this is really the fun part about our jobs.
00:32How did you start to prepare once you first read the script and said, oh, I want to do
00:37this?
00:38What was your next order of business to get into character?
00:41Oh, well, my next order of business is to relate to Tom, not think about how I'm going to play
00:47Tom.
00:48I'm thinking about what do I know about Tom and how can I bring something of myself into
00:54Tom?
00:55And my hook in was family.
00:58Love of family.
00:59I've got two daughters.
01:00I would fight for them.
01:02I would die for them.
01:03And I think there's a lot of that in Tom Truby.
01:07And he has been, we find out that he's kind of been devastated and lost a bit of his family.
01:13And here's an opportunity to reclaim a new family.
01:19And maybe he doesn't do it in the best way, but it's out of, it's out of love and need
01:27and fear and grief and obsession.
01:30So I found all of those things to, to, to, to start with Tom.
01:34Where did you start with Allie?
01:36Yeah, I am similarly to you.
01:39I think figuring out what I understand about someone, even as, as you were saying, you know,
01:45even if they're doing something that you could call wrong, you know, how do you understand
01:52the motivation and the way you talk about Tom's humanity?
01:56For me, I had to really unpack who Allie is.
02:01I had to unpack what her journey has been.
02:04I, I had to, um, as myself, even look at some of the things that this character criticizes
02:13about herself.
02:15And I hated some of that for her.
02:18You know, there, there are things that she brings up in the story.
02:21I don't want to give any spoilers, but where I thought you didn't do anything wrong there,
02:25you know, and don't you see?
02:27And I, I caught myself wanting to support this person.
02:31And I said, Oh, I'm the hooks are in.
02:33I care.
02:34I care about this family.
02:35I care about their struggles.
02:37And then what I, what I always make sure I have to do is come to terms with both what
02:43I relate to a character on and what I don't and ensure that I can deconstruct any favoritism
02:51on this end of the spectrum and any judgment on this end of the spectrum and really just
02:56figure out how to put a, a nuanced, complicated human being together.
03:03And then I think something that was really impactful for me, I mean, a couple of things,
03:09understanding this, uh, question of identity and family, you know, my partner's kids are
03:14adopted.
03:15My best friend's son is my godson.
03:18Obviously I did not give birth to him, but I would, I would literally give up my life
03:24for that kid.
03:25I have two friends who have a gorgeous, gorgeous family and both of their children, they adopted
03:33through the foster care system.
03:35And I watched them fight for years for those children.
03:40And I got to ask them about what it felt like to have raised them, you know, from the time
03:48they were little babies and spend years not knowing if their, if their children would stay
03:53their children, what that limbo felt like, what that journey was like, how they held on to
03:59their humanity, how they didn't just die from the anxiety and the fear.
04:04And it was so gorgeous to have people share, you know, all of these, these journeys and
04:11these experiences, because then I got to think about, you know, imagine being trapped in that
04:18limbo that I know my friends were in, for example, imagine the limbo hitting you when
04:22your kid's 15, it all, all the information, all of the experiences, you know, the, the way
04:29we build our modern families, all of it became really beautiful, um, fuel to understand, you
04:39know, that yes, biology is something and also family is what you make it.
04:44And it, it colored the story for me in a really cool way.
04:50Okay.
04:50I have a good one.
04:51Speaking of, you know, the fandom that's excited about this crossover, because one of the things
04:57that I loved the most about working on One Tree Hill, and that I know the fans loved was
05:02my character's arc.
05:05She really got to start as one thing and then evolve into something, um, that I loved that
05:12felt different.
05:13And you got to do something really similar playing Luke on the OC.
05:19Do you think that was the moment in time?
05:22Do you think we both just got lucky with storyline?
05:27Like what was the journey for you with, with carrying him through his arc?
05:33Well, I, you know, I think I got cast as Luke because I looked a certain way.
05:37Okay.
05:38You know, I was on Abercrombie bags and, you know, underwear modeling.
05:42And there was a, they even put a joke in the script about like, Hey, Abercrombie, you know?
05:47So I was very sort of stereotypically this guy that they wanted to look like Luke, um, you
05:55know, but our first season, I think was like 25 episodes.
05:58It's a lot of episodes.
05:59And we spent a lot of time together on set with the writers and producers.
06:03And I, I, you know, I think they got to know me as a person more and they started to layer
06:09a little bit more of the goofy, funny Luke in.
06:12And, and they kind of enjoyed bringing him in this direction of, you know, a jock who
06:19had been putting up this front.
06:21And when he became able to be himself around his new friends and the people who had been
06:29the outcasts, he suddenly like was able to be his, his goofy self.
06:35And, you know, that was a really fun way to take the character.
06:39Yeah, I think it was a similar journey for me, you know, as, as the writers got to know
06:46me, my character got, yeah, she just grew.
06:53I think they realized that I was a really sensitive soul who might, you know, be able to sort of
07:02show up in any room, but would probably be really nervous on the inside and who shows
07:08up for friends, no matter what.
07:10And, and, you know, there were certainly these bold and courageous, crazy, amazing things
07:16that she did that I don't know that I would have been able to.
07:19Um, we always joke that like every character on one trio had the most insane adult job.
07:24Like they just all, I became a fashion designer, one played in the NBA, like it was insane.
07:29But I think there were certain things about, you know, like integrity and feistiness and
07:38passion and whatever that, um, that I know they certainly started to layer in there for
07:44me that, yeah, just made me feel like I could bring a little more of myself to her.
07:48Yeah.
07:48I think that happens, that tends to happen over time when you're working on a series that
07:52lasts a long time, the writers get to know you and they start putting more of you.
07:56And when you've been on a show, like on Grey's seven years now, I've seen a lot of myself
08:01on screen.
08:02I was going to ask that.
08:04I love that.
08:05That's so fun.
08:05We have discussed that there are, um, thriller moments.
08:11Things take a turn.
08:13Everyone knows we had to work with stunt coordinators.
08:15I won't say how or by whom, but there is a moment in the film that did make me feel stressed
08:26for you because no one, there was no stunt performer who could take the hit.
08:30It's literally a closeup on your face and you get hit with, shall I say, very hot water.
08:41How hot was it?
08:47Or are you just that good at acting?
08:53Well, no, I'm, I, I, I'm a terrible actor.
08:56So I requested boiling water so that I could have a real reaction.
09:00Great.
09:00Love that.
09:01Your, your ability to heal your face is amazing.
09:04Yeah, no, it took, I did, I refused interviews for a while while it was, while it was healing
09:08up.
09:09No, uh, no, it was, uh, it was, I think it was slightly warm because it had to be like
09:14giving off a little bit of steam, but, um, no, it did not scald me, but, uh, you know,
09:21I enjoy, I enjoy, I enjoy taking a shot to the face from time.
09:24Well, it looks so brutal in the movie.
09:29That was one of those things.
09:30I was like, I was in the room for that.
09:31Why am I so startled?
09:34Yeah, no, I, I did take some other shots to the face too, which, uh, I, I love that.
09:39I love, I love doing stunts and fights.
09:41I love it.
09:42I do too.
09:43It's so fun.
