00:00He does plan on continuing his boxing career.
00:02That'll do it for Ringside Report.
00:06Julian Jackson taking tonight's fight on 10 days notice.
00:10Squares off against Anthony Jones in tonight's main event.
00:14We'll have it for you after this timeout on ESPN2.
00:19To the eyes of the Hawk, Julian Jackson.
00:23And they've seen just about everything that boxing has to offer, good and bad.
00:28Mostly, they've seen opponents fall down.
00:3149 to be exact.
00:34His power is unquestioned, both as a middleweight and as a junior middleweight.
00:41And when he took on Verno Phillips for the WBU championship, he expected to produce another knockout.
00:48But despite early success, it would not be the case.
00:51It's Jackson who would go down.
00:53And this might be one fight that was lost before the opening bell.
01:01I took him for granted in a lot of ways.
01:04I didn't believe that he could have hurt me, you know, with his punching ability.
01:09And even though I got hit in the ninth round, I was hit even harder before that.
01:18And that's just to show you that as the round progressed, I was losing more energy, you know, as I sweat and perspire.
01:26Did he give any thought to retirement?
01:28I believe that I'm the best, what should I say, best shape, 37-year-old out there.
01:40You know, we have a Duran, we have a Foreman, we have Leonard, we have all those guys, you know.
01:45And I believe that I'm in the best shape.
01:47You know, on paper, I'm 37, but in reality, you know, I see myself as 26.
01:53Anthony Jones has also seen the highs and lows of boxing.
01:59Two shots at a world title, 38 wins, but some key losses as well.
02:03This Detroit resident has been very good in the last two years.
02:07And against Tony Marshall, he looked to be on track to a big win.
02:13But after the good start, Marshall would turn things around in the later rounds.
02:18And in the 11th, he turned on to power.
02:20Jones was in trouble, and it would be the referee intervening.
02:27And Jones' hopes for a big win went awry.
02:30Well, first of all, I was in there, you know, really fighting his fight.
02:34I was in there, you know, trading, punching with a much bigger guy, a much taller guy than what I was,
02:38when I wasn't doing what I should have been doing in the first place, and that is boxing.
02:41If I figure, well, I figure if I had stayed outside and boxed a little longer than what I did,
02:46for a longer period than what I did, I'd have been more effective than what I was.
02:50But I thought when the referee did stop the ball that I was winning.
02:53You know, I might have been winning by a slight margin, but I did think I was winning.
02:56But this time, the strategy will change.
03:00Ah, yes, a whole lot more boxing, you know.
03:03I learned from, well, I hope I learned my lesson from the Marshall fight.
03:07You know, that I'm at my best when I'm boxing.
03:10And I know when I'm here with Julian, there's a hard puncher like he is.
03:13I can't be trading punches with a person like that.
03:17Well, Anthony Jones is ready to roll.
03:19He's made his way into the ring.
03:21Al, what about the fact that he's fighting a guy who he really didn't prepare for?
03:24He was ready for Terry Norris, and they took this fight based upon the fact
03:28that it would be Terry Norris feeling that if he could beat a former champion of that ilk,
03:32it would vault him ahead.
03:33But what they got was another former champion,
03:36and a win over him could also push him ahead.
03:38Well, Julian Jackson making his way to the ring,
03:40former WVC middleweight champion,
03:42former WVA junior middleweight champion.
03:45But, Al, as we saw in the piece and the last time we saw him in action in Mississippi,
03:50he was knocked out.
03:51Was it an aberration?
03:53Well, I think often when fighters say that their weight was too low
03:57and that they were too dried out, you tend to be skeptical of that.
04:00In Julian Jackson's case, I think 149 was way too low for him.
04:04This is a better weight, so I think that bodes well for him.
04:07At 37, though, even though he is in good shape,
04:10even though he can still punch, he's very vulnerable.
04:12This will be his 61st career bout.
04:14What do you look for early?
04:15I think it's going to be a shootout.
04:17Julian Jackson said, I'm coming with both guns loaded,
04:20and he said, I hope Anthony Jones is.
04:22Jones, though, very much wants to use this ring in box.
04:25We'll see if he can do it.
04:26All right, we are getting set for tonight's main event.
04:28Anthony Jones and Julian Jackson.
04:30To our ring announcer, here's Mark Biro.
04:35Ladies and gentlemen, from the Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan,
04:40Fight Night Incorporated and matchmaker Tommy Vaca,
04:44in association with Budweiser,
04:47the undisputed, undefeated king of beers,
04:51this Bud's for you presents
04:53the deuce main event of the evening,
04:5710 rounds, junior middleweights.
05:00Your referee for this event,
05:02from Clarkston, Michigan,
05:05Dale Grable.
05:08Introducing now the principal's first
05:10in the red corner to my right,
05:13wearing the blue trunks with the gold trim,
05:15he weighs in at 155 and a quarter pounds
05:20with a professional record of 38 victories,
05:24eight defeats, two draws,
05:26one no contest,
05:28and 26 wins coming by way of knockout.
05:31He hails from Detroit, Michigan.
05:35Here is Anthony Jones.
05:40Jones.
05:41His opponent in the blue corner,
05:45wearing the white trunks with blue and red trim,
05:49he weighs in at 155 and three-quarter pounds.
05:54His professional record reads 55 victories,
05:58five defeats, 49 wins coming by way of knockout.
06:03He hails from the Virgin Islands
06:06and now makes his home in Las Vegas, Nevada,
06:09the former two-time WBC junior middleweight champion
06:15and former WBA middleweight champion,
06:19Julian the Hawk Jackson.
06:23Jackson, 10 rounds, junior middleweights.
06:29Come on, man, let's go with it.
06:30Listen, gentlemen,
06:31you're giving your instructions in the dressing room.
06:33I expect you to obey my commands at all times.
06:36Good luck to both of you.
06:37Protect yourself at all times.
06:38Touch him up.
06:39Good bout.
06:41Scheduled for 10, there's Julian Jackson.
06:44He has 34 knockouts coming within the first three rounds
06:49of his bouts.
06:51That's 69% of his 49 knockouts come early.
06:54And Anthony Jones, 33 years of age, fought 53 days ago,
07:03knocked out by Tony Marshall.
07:05Had given up boxing after a loss in 1995 to Uri Boy Campos.
07:08He was knocked out in the second round.
07:10Says he didn't train.
07:11He mentally was not ready.
07:13So he decided to start a towing service and he had to get back into boxing in 1996 because someone stole his Ford Super Duty tow truck and the insurance didn't pay to replace it.
07:26So he refocused on boxing.
07:28A bad sign that indicates you shouldn't be in the towing business.
07:31When he got back in boxing, he hooked up with Bobby Hitz in Chicago and started getting his fights promoted there, rededicated himself to boxing.
07:41And I'll tell you what, since he's come back, one thing he has done is fight tough people.
07:45Jorge Baca, Opa Karr, Alex Brunemi, and Tony Marshall among them.
07:51So he's fought tough guys.
07:53And of course now, here he is in against Julian Jackson.
07:56Says he didn't change a thing in his training.
07:58Once he found out that Terry Norris was out and Julian Jackson was in,
08:02says he'll just try to box him until he gets an opening to fire off a right hand.
08:07And as you look at Jones here in the first round, he's coming out as a righty.
08:11He is very prone to changing.
08:13In fact, for a long time in his career, fought much more as a lefty.
08:17But when we talked to him yesterday, he said, I am a natural righty.
08:20A lot of people in boxing don't know that.
08:23Now, Jackson usually takes him, even though he's got a lot of early knockouts,
08:28against the real good opponents, it often takes him a little around or two to really get into the flow.
08:33So, Jackson has lost only five times in 60 pro bouts, all of them knockout losses.
08:40Jones has lost eight times.
08:42Five of those have been by way of knockout.
08:45So each man is susceptible.
08:49Low punch by Anthony Jones.
08:51Jackson looks to referee Grable for some help on that.
08:54Both men are great guys.
09:00You heard from them in the piece leading up to this, and they're both delightful men
09:04and guys that I think are a credit for the box.
09:18Feeling out process here in round one.
09:20One thing Anthony Jones is doing is he's putting himself right in punching range of Jackson.
09:32I think he wants to show a little more lateral move, but not stand in front of Jackson quite so much.
09:38Jackson with a three-inch height advantage.
09:42So by Jones getting in tight, it sort of negates that.
09:44He either wants to be in tight or far enough out where he can do lateral movement.
09:52It's that right, that in-between period, like right there.
09:56He's in punching range right there.
09:59Closing seconds of round number one as Jones goes to the southpaw stance.
10:04Scheduled for ten on the deuce.
10:06Three weeks from tonight, we'll be in Atlantic City, New Jersey, here on ESPN2.
10:12And that man, Oba Carr, will fight for the IBA welterweight championship against Jose Rivera.
10:17Also on the card, 1996 Olympian Floyd Mayweather.
10:21Oba Carr fought Anthony Jones to withdraw last year.
10:25That was a wildly exciting fight.
10:27And had one knockdown been called a knockdown that wasn't,
10:31Jones could have won that fight.
10:33But he and Oba engaged in a great bout.
10:35There is how close this first round was.
10:37But look at how much more active Jones was.
10:40Julian Jackson landing a big percentage of his punches.
10:44I don't know that that 24 figure is correct there, though.
10:53No, I just think that we may have juxtaposed a few figures there.
10:59Because 19 out of 25 is not 35%.
11:01As bad as my math is, and everyone that watches this show knows it's bad.
11:06Oh, and it's bad.
11:07It's bad.
11:08I know it's not 90, it's 35%.
11:10What about Jones switching in his back?
11:12Lefty, righty, lefty, righty.
11:14He does it, Bob, and he does it with impunity.
11:16And I think it's such a natural thing for him that he's one of the few fighters that literally does it so instinctively,
11:23I don't think he knows when he's going to do it.
11:29Jones fought twice for the lightweight title.
11:34Back in 89 and 91.
11:36And so he has come way up in weight to be fighting in the junior middleweight division here.
11:43Connell Whitaker and Edwin Rosario, two of the greats, were people who lost to him.
11:47He lost a decision to Whitaker, who, although Jones is a very good boxer, he wasn't better than Connell Whitaker.
11:57Well, he's very few out of Penny, he's a good straight young man.
12:00Now, Julian Jackson backing up a lot more in this fight than you're used to seeing him.
12:07Jackson's punches are wider than normal, even.
12:10That's a bad sign for him.
12:12Jones throwing lots of straight punches right up the middle.
12:16Now, a little short uppercut from Jones.
12:19Is that a function of age, you know, when you get to 37 years of age,
12:23is now you're trying to just load up on big punches and end things quicker
12:28as opposed to having some volume?
12:30Especially if you look at the numbers landed in this run,
12:32especially when you are, by nature, a knockout puncher.
12:36That's true, Bob.
12:37Sometimes you make those punches wider, you don't put them together as much as you'd like.
12:43Oh, there's a big hook, though.
12:44And I'll tell you, Jones is in the wheelhouse for that hook
12:47when Jackson throws it in a compact, fast fashion, as he did.
12:51They both exchanged hooks there.
12:53Anthony Jones really doesn't want to be exchanging this way with Jackson,
12:58even though he's probably winning this round.
13:04Final seconds of round number two,
13:06shaping up to be a good bout between Julian Jackson and Anthony Jones.
13:1337-year-old Julian Jackson with 49 knockout wins,
13:16but Al, he has been knocked out five times,
13:20and you take a look at the people that have accomplished that,
13:22all in championship bouts, I might add.
13:24And all of those, possibly with the exception of Quincy Taylor,
13:28who wasn't known so much as a puncher,
13:29all had lots of power.
13:32Of course, we saw the Vernal Phillips fight recently on ESPN.
13:36Does have some championship knockout wins against the likes of Terry Norris.
13:44So, Julian Jackson has had many more highs than lows.
13:48Tyrone Boone, his lead trainer,
13:50and he gets up to the start of round number three.
13:56Scheduled for ten rounds.
13:58From the Palace at Auburn Hills,
14:00big crowd on hand on this Memorial Day weekend.
14:03There you take a look at numbers in round number two.
14:06Jones really getting the job done,
14:08going a lot, much busier than Julian Jackson.
14:12He did say he was going to box more,
14:14and in truth, he has pretty much stood in front of Jackson,
14:17has gotten away with it to this point.
14:19The other big power puncher that gave,
14:21really gave Jones trouble,
14:23is Uri Boy Campos,
14:23who broke his jaw and beat him,
14:25but he says that he didn't train for that fight,
14:28and he really wasn't ready,
14:29and Bobby hits his promoter,
14:31indicates he wasn't really ready.
14:32But before he hooked up with Bobby,
14:34he said he wasn't ready for that fight.
14:35And I think he might have stunned Julian Jackson.
14:37Mm-hmm.
14:42Jackson in a very defensive posture.
14:45Al has it a shutout so far for Jones.
14:49You don't like to see,
14:50if you're a Julian Jackson fan,
14:52you don't like to see him backing up like that.
14:55It's not his style.
14:56It's not what he does.
14:58One good thing for Jackson
14:59is he's starting to shorten up his left hook
15:02and landing it.
15:02Oh, big body punch by Jackson.
15:05And he goes there again.
15:06I'm going to go.
15:07Three step punching.
15:08There you go.
15:09There you go.
15:09There you go.
15:10There you go.
15:12I think Jones
15:13has to be very awkward
15:15especially if you really haven't prepared
15:18like Jackson has.
15:20A guy that's switching right,
15:21he must be constantly in front.
15:23And Anthony Jones has very good defensive skills.
15:25That's something he's always had.
15:28His fight with Tony Marshall last time out
15:30was really a wonderful bout.
15:32And he was doing pretty well against Tony
15:33who was a terrific junior middleweight.
15:35And then in the 11th,
15:37the fight ended.
15:38And Jones very distressed.
15:39He still doesn't believe
15:40that fight should have been stopped.
15:41He's just out hustling, Jackson.
15:48Oh, nice right hand by Jones.
15:54This is being won
15:55by the better defense of Anthony Jones.
16:00And now he's getting a little wild.
16:02And if he gets wild with Jackson
16:03on the inside,
16:04that could spell trouble for him.
16:05This is the third time we've seen Jackson
16:09in the last year.
16:11Good short shot inside
16:12by Jones.
16:14Back in July of last year
16:16in Vegas on ESPN.
16:17Second round knockout
16:18against the very
16:20non-committed
16:23and underwhelming
16:25Terry Ford.
16:26and then of course
16:27in January of this year
16:28the knockout
16:28in the ninth round
16:29at the hands of
16:29Bruno Phillips.
16:32Look how quickly Jones
16:33switches from right into left.
16:34It's got to be tough
16:35because he does it well.
16:37Look how he blocks
16:38the left hook to Jackson.
16:39Superb work in this round
16:41by Anthony Jones.
16:42Round number three
16:43to its end.
16:44The Indians
16:48then at 4 p.m. Eastern
16:49to Houston we go.
16:51The Dodgers
16:51and Astros.
16:52The Dodgers
16:53second baseman
16:54Eric Young
16:54will try to use his speed.
16:56Greg Vigio
16:56playing brilliantly
16:57on offense and defense
16:58for the Astros.
16:59Baseball doubled it
17:00Memorial Day
17:01on ESPN.
17:03I don't know
17:03what the Dodgers
17:04did today
17:05but prior to today
17:06five and two
17:07since they got rid
17:08of Mike Piazza.
17:09The additions
17:10are helping them.
17:11How about in this town
17:11where the Tigers
17:12are starting to get rolling
17:13and they're all excited
17:15about the Detroit Red Wings
17:16as well.
17:16A big win by the Red Wings
17:18today in game one
17:19of the Western Conference
17:19Finals in the NHL playoffs.
17:21Of course we'll have game two
17:22of the Eastern Conference Finals
17:23going tomorrow night
17:24on ESPN.
17:26Congratulations
17:27to the Utah Jazz
17:28and they win
17:28this afternoon.
17:30Sweeping the lift
17:31a good right by Jones.
17:38Opening 30 seconds
17:39of round four.
17:40I have Jones winning
17:44all the rounds
17:45so far.
17:45One round was very close
17:47but the other two
17:48I thought Jones
17:48really handled
17:49and now he's giving
17:50more movement
17:51to Jackson.
17:52An excellent idea
17:53making Jackson
17:57try and cut
17:58the ring off
17:59on him.
18:08Just thinking
18:08we were congratulating
18:09the Jazz
18:10and Red Wings
18:11on Sundays
18:12we could congratulate
18:13just about everybody.
18:16This is the culmination
18:17of the weekend
18:17and a lot of action
18:19in sports.
18:22Indy 500 today.
18:24Yeah.
18:24Oh, good left hand
18:25by Jones.
18:29I'll tell you what
18:30Jones is fighting
18:31a masterful fight
18:32at this point.
18:32He really is.
18:33He's being aggressive
18:34and yet still
18:35defensive minded.
18:36Again a low blow
18:37by Jones.
18:38It's a second warning
18:39I think one more time
18:40they'll take the point away.
18:41I don't think
18:41it was intentional
18:42a little bit.
18:48The power punches
18:49of Jackson
18:50are not flowing tonight.
18:52And remember
18:53in the loss
18:54by Jackson
18:55at the hand of Phillips
18:56Phillips landed
18:5753% of his power shots
19:00and Jones is landing
19:02a lot
19:02and you take a look
19:02at the numbers
19:03up to the minute
19:04in this bout.
19:06So that tells you
19:07where things are at
19:08and why we believe
19:09Anthony Jones is winning.
19:10Now there's been
19:11a little subtle change
19:12here in this round now.
19:14The left hooks
19:14are starting to get
19:15there a little better
19:16for Jackson
19:16because Jones
19:17is getting grave
19:18and standing
19:18just close enough
19:21but just far enough
19:22if you will
19:23where those hooks
19:24can land.
19:24See look
19:25just barely missing
19:26with that hook
19:26is Jackson.
19:28See he's got
19:29the bead with that hook
19:30but the question
19:30is will he get him
19:31in or will Jones
19:32hurt him?
19:32Now Jones is hurting him.
19:34And Jackson
19:35had a golden opportunity
19:36but both of his
19:37left hooks bounced
19:37off the top
19:38of the head of Jones.
19:39this might be
19:41a little more
19:41of a war
19:42than Anthony Jones
19:42wants
19:43but so far
19:43he's winning it.
19:51Oh a good double left
19:52took there
19:52by Julian Jackson.
20:00Close of round
20:01number four
20:02as Jones and Jackson
20:05whale away
20:05on each other.
20:06This bout
20:06is scheduled
20:07for ten.
20:10Al good Jones stuff.
20:13Here's Anthony Jones
20:14working on the inside
20:15very effectively.
20:16Good short
20:16straight punches
20:17mostly getting
20:19into Julian Jackson.
20:21See Jackson's
20:21punches a little wider
20:22and Jones
20:24coming up the middle.
20:25Round number five
20:26has begun
20:27between Julian Jackson
20:28and Anthony Jones.
20:34Take a look
20:35at some punch numbers
20:35through four rounds
20:37decidedly in Jones'
20:38advantage.
20:39Jones very active
20:40in the last two rounds
20:41he's thrown
20:41112 and 97 punches
20:43respectively
20:44so he has been
20:45very very busy.
20:48You know
20:48Julian Jackson
20:49this is now
20:49the third time
20:50that we've had him
20:51in the last year
20:51as I mentioned
20:52and he talks about
20:54the tremendous shape
20:55that he's in
20:57and that he feels
20:57like he's 26
20:58not 37
20:59and I don't dispute that.
21:02I mean he's
21:02in outstanding
21:04physical condition.
21:05However
21:06when you get to 37
21:07though
21:07your ability
21:08to take punches
21:09and then muster
21:10an attack
21:11diminishes
21:12doesn't it?
21:13Yeah that's a
21:14good assessment
21:14and it also
21:15your technique
21:17goes south
21:18just enough
21:19so that you can't
21:20respond like you want to.
21:22and maybe you
21:23diminish a little
21:24the power
21:24of your punches.
21:27Anthony Jones
21:28though he is
21:29from Detroit
21:30has been part
21:30of the boxing
21:31renaissance
21:32in Chicago
21:32and that's
21:33Bobby Hitsu
21:33has been promoting
21:34him there
21:35and Jones
21:36has become
21:36a popular figure
21:38in Chicago
21:39as well.
21:45Jackson
21:45letting his hands
21:46go
21:46but not
21:48very accurate.
21:52Jackson has
21:58nine knockouts
21:59in championship
22:00fights
22:01among ten wins
22:02with ten and four
22:02records
22:03so you know
22:04he has the power
22:05but can he get it
22:06done tonight?
22:09There's a good hook
22:10by Jackson
22:11that's his best punch
22:13of the fight
22:13and I think he made
22:14an impact
22:15Anthony Jones
22:15that was the best
22:17left hook
22:18Jackson has thrown
22:19in this fight
22:19and it landed
22:20flush.
22:23We'll see
22:24how Jones reacts
22:25that he's kind of
22:26back on his heels
22:27right now.
22:29I think that was
22:30the first punch
22:31in this fight
22:31he really felt
22:32from Julian Jackson.
22:34Now Jackson
22:35being cautioned
22:36for low blows
22:37they're exchanging
22:47big bombs
22:47and both men
22:49look vulnerable
22:50to be hit
22:51now this has been
22:51Jackson's best round
22:52I think of the fight
22:53Jackson is just
23:02looking to load up
23:03with that hook
23:04well this is the
23:05first round
23:05that it seems
23:06like Jackson
23:07had some sort
23:08of rhythm.
23:10Here's a left hand
23:11from Jackson
23:11as we come to the
23:12end of round
23:13number five.
23:15With Jones
23:15fighting as a lefty
23:16here is the nice
23:18left hook
23:18from Julian Jackson
23:20in the last round
23:20now it did land
23:21pretty well
23:22Jones was able
23:23to turn his head
23:24a little bit
23:24as it landed
23:25but I still think
23:25it had a pretty
23:26good impact.
23:26Alright round
23:27number six
23:27underway
23:28in a scheduled
23:28ten round
23:29between former
23:30world champion
23:31Julian Jackson
23:32and Anthony Jones
23:33range power punches
23:34in round number
23:35five.
23:36There's an indication
23:37that Jackson did
23:38have his best round
23:39of the fight
23:39and so many
23:41of the punches
23:41they're being thrown
23:42are power punches
23:43so they're using
23:45the jab
23:45mostly as a range
23:46final.
23:46Now Jones going down
23:50to the body
23:50Jackson did most
23:51of the body work
23:52early in this fight
23:53obviously
24:02head out
24:04now I was going to say
24:04the jab of Jones
24:06now becoming a factor
24:07in this round
24:07he's really getting
24:08that punch
24:10he's putting that punch
24:11out there
24:11with a lot
24:13of leverage
24:13now a scorecard
24:15Jones in front
24:16four rounds
24:17to one
24:18in Jackson
24:19the last round
24:20if you're wondering
24:22Julian Jackson
24:23came into the ring
24:23to start this fight
24:24with black hair
24:26and it looks like
24:27the 37 year old
24:28is aging
24:28right before your eyes
24:30then in between rounds
24:32they put Vaseline
24:34on the face
24:35and the punches
24:36to slide
24:37water
24:37and it tends
24:38to make the hair
24:40look a little
24:40different color
24:41he's not stepped
24:44in a time
24:44good right hand
24:47by Jones
24:48and then Jackson
24:49answers back
24:50boy when you rock
24:51Jackson though
24:52he's going to come
24:53on like a warrior
24:53and that is what
24:54he's doing
24:54it's really very
24:57reminiscent of
24:58the Verno Phillips
24:59fight
24:59because that one
25:00ended badly
25:00for Jackson
25:01he claims
25:05that his extra
25:06weight
25:06155 instead
25:07of 149
25:08will help him
25:09in this fight
25:09we'll see
25:10as rights are
25:12getting there
25:12by Anthony Jones
25:13when Jones
25:14uses the jab
25:15in this fight
25:16he is so much
25:16more effective
25:17and now backing
25:19up Jackson
25:19this is not a
25:20posture Julian Jackson
25:21is used to
25:22he's much more
25:26comfortable
25:27coming forward
25:28so after a good
25:31round five
25:32for Jackson
25:33it's Jones
25:34who's come on
25:35here in round six
25:36and Jackson
25:38just holds on
25:39in the last two years
25:47since he has
25:47come back to boxing
25:48Anthony Jones
25:49has been a very
25:50consistent performer
25:51and you see evidence
25:52of that here tonight
25:53you have Julian Jackson
25:57retreating
25:58you're doing well
25:59right hand
26:02from Jones
26:04this is a round
26:08that cannot end
26:09fast enough
26:10for Julian Jackson
26:11the hand speed of
26:14Jones
26:15the jab
26:15have really given
26:18Jackson a lot of
26:19problems
26:20and that is the
26:21end of round
26:22number six
26:22we'll take you
26:22to Anthony
26:23Jones
26:23corner
26:24as lead
26:24trainer
26:24is David
26:25Drex
26:25how you feeling
26:27Blakeman
26:28let's go baby
26:29how you feeling
26:30man
26:30take a deep breath
26:31let it out slow
26:32baby
26:38let's go here
26:38baby Jones
26:39don't get
26:40in the slow
26:40thing with me
26:41it's a pick
26:42time
26:42now popcorn
26:42time
26:43up and down
26:43with us
26:44there you go
26:52baby
26:52do you manage
26:58switch as much
26:59as Anthony Jones
26:59or as expected
27:00he does it
27:03almost in mid
27:03punches sometimes
27:04a lot of times
27:06that's a problem
27:06because you square
27:07yourself up
27:07and in a way
27:08that was the case
27:09there against
27:09Julian Jackson
27:10and yet
27:11Anthony Jones
27:12is able to get
27:13away with that
27:14here's an interesting
27:18stat over the course
27:20of his career
27:21although Julian Jackson
27:23is known to be
27:24the knockout puncher
27:26of the two
27:26with 49 knockouts
27:27and as I mentioned
27:2834 of his 49
27:29coming in the first
27:30three rounds
27:31it's Jones
27:32who has more knockouts
27:33after six rounds
27:34Jones has eight
27:35after six rounds
27:37Jackson in his career
27:38has five
27:39take a look at the numbers
27:44and I believe
27:47those are the numbers
27:48in round six
27:48we'll re-rack those
27:49there we go
27:54through round six
27:55there you go
27:56with a big edge
27:57to Anthony Jones
27:58and part of the reason
27:59he has that big edge
28:00is in the last round
28:01he did outland
28:02Jackson
28:0346 to 18
28:04so he is building
28:05up quite a margin
28:06as far as that
28:12later power
28:13Jones does have
28:14five seventh round
28:15knockouts
28:16one of the interesting
28:19things about Jones
28:20is when you think
28:21he's come up
28:21to 154
28:23from 135
28:24he brought some power
28:26with him didn't he
28:27he's been able
28:27against these good
28:28junior middleweights
28:29to hurt them
28:30you know he had
28:31Carr down
28:31he had Marshall
28:32in some trouble
28:33during their fight
28:34he scored a couple
28:37of impressive knockouts
28:39Jackson trying desperately
28:45to load up on shots
28:46but really not connecting
28:48his win over Alex Bunima
28:50one round knockout
28:52which surprised some people
28:53but he felt he was
28:55going to win that fight
28:56he showed lots of power
28:56there so
28:57Julian Jackson
28:59while we've talked
29:00about his power
29:01which is certainly there
29:02Jones has his too
29:03as you pointed out
29:04Jones switching back
29:07to lefty
29:08Jackson has slowed
29:14his attack
29:15very much
29:16picking his spot
29:17you know Jones
29:18is doing a very smart
29:19thing now
29:19going to the body
29:20Bob
29:20you've got a 37
29:22year old fighter
29:22in front of you
29:23we're headed into
29:24the mid to later rounds
29:25going to the body
29:26is a great idea
29:27remember this is
29:30a 10 round bout
29:31in the round
29:32Jones
29:33landing
29:3415 more
29:35than Jackson
29:36that tells you
29:39right where we're at
29:40what a great innovation
29:41I really enjoy
29:42seeing you
29:43producer Rob Beiner
29:49and director
29:50John Faracis
29:51helping to get
29:52that done
29:53big right hand
29:59by Jones
30:00great left hand
30:09by Anthony Jones
30:10and the 33 year old
30:18Anthony Jones
30:19really taking control
30:21of this bout
30:21three more rounds
30:22to go
30:23after this time out
30:24on the deuce
30:24oh
30:25Jackson's hurt
30:26welcome back
30:27to the Palace
30:27at Auburn Hills
30:28final seconds
30:29of round number
30:31seven
30:31and Julian Jackson
30:33got hit
30:33by a tow truck
30:34right at the end
30:36of the round
30:36very much like
30:37the Verno Phillips
30:38fight when he got hit
30:39with a huge left hook
30:40it was a right hand
30:41by Anthony Jones
30:42and Jackson went down
30:45was able to get up
30:46before the count
30:48before he was rocked
30:49a beautiful straight
30:50right hand
30:51by Anthony Jones
30:53he's landed
30:53several good ones
30:54in his bout before
30:55but none as good as that
30:56and 37 year old
30:59Julian Jackson
30:59hits the canvas again
31:01will he be able
31:02to shake that off
31:03in this round
31:03I am not so sure
31:05and they bought
31:08a little extra time
31:09in that corner
31:10for Jackson
31:10I don't know
31:11that he has
31:12had his feet
31:13underneath him yet
31:14Julian Jackson
31:16on his bicycle
31:17to start
31:18round number eight
31:19I don't think
31:21he's going to get
31:21through this
31:22not against a guy
31:24like Jones
31:25who was such
31:26an accurate puncher
31:27and who was so busy
31:28another right hook
31:30gets in
31:31now from the
31:32southpaw stance
31:32I don't know
31:33if Jackson
31:34can go on
31:35they may have
31:36to stop this
31:37one pretty soon
31:38Dale Greville
31:39takes a look
31:39I guess
31:41there's a standing
31:42eight count
31:42a standing eight count
31:43is in effect
31:44in the state
31:45of Michigan
31:45and you know
31:47what not a bad
31:48use of it
31:48right there
31:49counts as a knockdown
31:50so again
31:51it penalizes
31:51Jackson
31:52Jackson
31:54in the retreat
31:56on the back
31:57of your heels
31:57mode
31:58doesn't look good
32:00for Julian Jackson
32:01of Granthony Jones
32:02all he needs to do
32:04is not get
32:05absurdly careless
32:06and he'll get
32:07things done here
32:08and oh
32:10so much time left
32:12here in round eight
32:13Jones is landing
32:16just about everything
32:17he has drawn
32:18very reminiscent
32:25of the
32:26Verna Phillips fight
32:27where Jackson
32:27was in a war
32:28until the middle
32:29to later on
32:30and then
32:31got wet
32:32approaching the
32:33midway point
32:34of round eight
32:34left hand
32:35from Jones
32:36works the body
32:37left hand
32:40and that's it
32:41Dale Greville
32:43is stopping it
32:44well
32:46if it was
32:47an odd time
32:48to stop it
32:48guess what
32:49Julian Jackson
32:50didn't complain
32:51so it may have
32:52been the appropriate
32:52time
32:53and for Anthony
32:53Jones
32:54it punctuates
32:55what for him
32:56was a very
32:57important
32:57and good win
32:59I'll tell you
33:01what though
33:01the only thing
33:02bad about
33:04stopping it
33:04like that
33:05is it may
33:07inspire
33:08Julian Jackson
33:08to continue
33:09boxing professionally
33:10yes
33:11and at this
33:11juncture
33:12while I'm
33:14never one
33:14to urge
33:15boxers
33:16to retire
33:16prematurely
33:18I think
33:19Julian Jackson
33:20is getting hit
33:21with a lot
33:22of big shots
33:22that he doesn't
33:23need to
33:23in some of
33:24these fights
33:24against the
33:25better junior
33:25middleweight
33:26so for the
33:29second consecutive
33:29bout
33:30Julian Jackson
33:31has been
33:32stopped
33:33in January
33:33knocked out
33:34in the ninth
33:34round by
33:35Verno Phillips
33:35tonight
33:36that man
33:36Anthony Jones
33:37stops
33:38Julian Jackson
33:39unofficially
33:39at 131
33:40of round eight
33:41now Anthony
33:42Jones
33:42was landing
33:43most of
33:43what he
33:43was throwing
33:44I'm sure
33:44that's what
33:45prompted
33:45the referee
33:46Dale Grable
33:47to get in
33:47there and
33:48stop this
33:48and one
33:49straight left
33:50hand here
33:50kind of
33:50stopped him
33:51in his
33:51tracks
33:51and I
33:52think at
33:52that juncture
33:53he felt
33:54that he was
33:55just going
33:55to take
33:55a lot
33:55more punishment
33:56and stop
33:57the fight
33:57and really
33:57Julian Jackson
33:58didn't complain
33:59and for this
34:0032 year old
34:02Anthony Jones
34:03there are
34:04good boxing
34:04days still
34:05ahead
34:05plenty of
34:06them
34:07Anthony
34:08Jones
34:08gets his
34:0927th
34:10stoppage
34:10his 39th
34:12career victory

35:23and defeat
35:24thanks for
35:24coming over
35:24and chatting
35:25with us
35:25a very
35:26tough loss
35:27for you
35:27was there
35:28any question
35:29in your mind
35:29about the
35:30stoppage
35:30of the fight
35:30well
35:31I think
35:33the referee
35:33uses
35:33discretion
35:34and
35:35you didn't
35:36complain at
35:37the time
35:37so I assume
35:37you have no beef
35:38my opponent
35:40wasn't hitting
35:40as hard
35:41as I
35:41expected
35:42I was hurt
35:43no doubt
35:44about it
35:45no qualms
35:46about it
35:47it was an
35:48opportunity
35:48for me
35:48I take it
35:50and
35:50I just
35:51thought
35:52I would
35:53have pulled
35:53it out
35:54and
35:55apparently
35:55he was a
35:56better man
35:56tonight
35:56but
35:57no ifs and
35:59but about
35:59it
35:59you know
36:00Julian
36:00you were able
36:01at certain
36:02points in this
36:02fight
36:02it looked
36:03like you were
36:03trying to get
36:04your left hook
36:04on track
36:05you came
36:05very close
36:06to getting
36:07it on track
36:07you couldn't
36:08quite
36:08what was
36:08the difference
36:09well you know
36:11I think the
36:11difference was
36:12that he moved
36:13a lot more
36:14than I expected
36:14we expected
36:15him to really
36:16you know
36:17come at me
36:18and he was
36:20boxing a lot
36:20more than
36:21we expected
36:22and you know
36:23I think he
36:24moved enough
36:25and allowed me
36:26to miss my
36:26left hook
36:27did the switching
36:28bother you
36:29from lefty
36:29to righty
36:30no not at all
36:31it didn't really
36:31bother me
36:32you know
36:33I tried to keep
36:34my attack on him
36:35and his movement
36:36you know
36:37sort of threw me
36:38off a bit
36:38and took me
36:39off of my plan
36:40as well
36:40because I expected
36:42him to stand up
36:42there and slug
36:43try to slug it out
36:44and apparently
36:45he didn't
36:46and hey
36:47you know
36:48he was successful
36:48now this is a very
36:49disappointing loss
36:50I know for you
36:51inevitably
36:52and this is a question
36:53that needs to be
36:54asked at this juncture
36:55does this make you
36:56think about retirement
36:57well retirement
36:59is definitely
36:59in the plan
37:00you know
37:00no doubt about it
37:01boxing is not forever
37:02and I give God
37:04praise
37:04irregardless
37:05win lose
37:05or I'm a winner
37:06you know
37:06I'm saying
37:07in Christ Jesus
37:07well you're a winner
37:08in life
37:08that's for sure
37:09oh definitely
37:09you know
37:10and you know
37:11I really don't have
37:12no chips on my shoulder
37:14win or lose
37:15you know
37:16boxing has been
37:17good to me
37:17and I wish it was
37:19as good
37:19to me
37:21as I was to win
37:22you know
37:22but it is not
37:24and but anyway
37:25you know
37:25I am so grateful
37:26for what happened
37:28I met some great people
37:29and I was able to
37:30you know
37:31meet some great people
37:32like yourself
37:32well I'll tell you what
37:33whatever you do
37:34best of luck to you
37:35thank you very much man
37:36all right
37:36Julian Jackson
37:37a very gracious man
37:38even in defeat
37:38we're going to get
37:39Anthony Jones over here
37:40who fought a very
37:42very good fight
37:43this evening
37:44and did his best
37:45to gain the victory
37:46let's see if we can get
37:47Anthony Jones over here
37:48come on
37:49here is Anthony
37:51hey good fight baby
37:52lots of sportsmanship
37:54between these two men
37:55lots of love
37:56lots of love
37:56and a lot of respect
37:57shown
37:58and they both earned it
37:59Anthony
38:00this was a wonderful win
38:01for you
38:01he's a pretty tough customer
38:03oh no doubt
38:03no doubt
38:04he's a two-time
38:04former world champion
38:05you can't take anything
38:06away from the man
38:07hey this performance
38:08by you tonight
38:09I said was
38:09typical of your performances
38:11in the last couple of years
38:12since you came back
38:13to boxing
38:14very consistent
38:15well that's the only thing
38:16I'm working on in the gym
38:17you know
38:17I got away from him
38:18a little bit in my last fight
38:19with Tony Marshall
38:20but you can see in this fight
38:21I try to box a little more
38:22than what I did with Tony Marshall
38:23I try to bang too much with him
38:25and I know that's not my strength
38:26so this is my fight
38:27I came back to my strength
38:28which is trying to box a little bit
38:29well you showed some power
38:30along with that boxing
38:31let's take a look
38:32Anthony
38:32and you can comment on this
38:34this is where you got him down
38:35that's a good right hand
38:37that's a good right hand
38:37I saw him in the mix
38:38yeah I saw him in the mix
38:39I hit him with a right hand
38:40and that's what I caught him with
38:41and another look at it
38:43that right hand became
38:45a very important weapon
38:46for you from the right hand stance
38:48well
38:48someone told me
38:50I heard
38:50in a past fight
38:52a fight I had
38:52with Tony Marshall anyway
38:53his corner pin
38:54said I didn't have a left hand
38:55but I was always taught
38:57you know
38:57you always set up a right hand
38:58with a good left hand
38:59and that's what I did
39:00right there
39:00well you did do it
39:01we'll see the end of the fight
39:03the referee stepping in
39:04you would hit him
39:04with the left hook here
39:05that I think gave the referee
39:06the idea that
39:07he might be in additional trouble
39:08yeah well he was
39:09hurt from the last round
39:11because that's when he got hurt
39:11and he saw me
39:13catching him with good shots
39:14and he decided to stop him
39:15the interesting thing about
39:16I think about this performance
39:18was that
39:19you did your usual quota
39:20of switching from lefty
39:21to righty
39:22and you were effective
39:23from both sides of the fence
39:25yeah well that's what
39:26I try to work on in the gym
39:27I really try to work on
39:27my left hand stance
39:29and I found out
39:30in past experiences
39:31that I work with my left hand
39:33he usually set up
39:34my right hand
39:34so I mean if I stay
39:36consistent and short
39:37and sharp with my punch
39:38it doesn't matter
39:38which side I'm on
39:39because either side
39:40they just come off
39:41you have fought
39:42very tough people
39:43since you got back
39:44into it a couple years ago
39:45and people have to respect that
39:48and we're going to get
39:49to your promoter
39:49Bobby Hitz here in a moment
39:50but you've got to feel
39:52like a world championship shot
39:53maybe do you very soon
39:54well I just beat
39:55a two-time former
39:56world champion here
39:57I fought over Carl
39:58who had two title shots
39:59I beat Vince Phillips
40:00he's a world champion
40:01right now
40:02and I think my record
40:03stands for itself
40:04I'm just hoping that
40:05you know
40:05if I fought
40:06you for a compass
40:06at the end of my career
40:07before I came back
40:08and I'm looking for
40:09maybe a chance
40:10with him again
40:10quickly
40:11Bobby Hitz
40:11what do you think
40:12is next for Anthony Jones
40:13well we fielded an offer
40:14for an August fight
40:15on HBO
40:16but I think
40:16we're going to stick
40:17with our game plan
40:19to get a world title
40:19fight for him
40:20Mullings
40:21or somebody
40:22of that caliber
40:23your boy compass

40:25that are out there
40:25Delahoy
40:26we love to fight

40:28paid his dues
40:28and his team

40:34a world title fight
