00:00Amelia Dale was just recently employed full time at the Australian National University.
00:07Now she's in a group of colleagues facing cuts.
00:10I'm furious about the way that they've been treated and the way that it suggests that we have to compete with each other.
00:18But we're sticking together.
00:19She says despite the difficult circumstances, staff continue to go above and beyond.
00:24I see how much they care for their students. I see how much they care about what they teach.
00:29I see how much the professional staff work so hard to make all the work of the university happen.
00:36The ANU acknowledges the pain is real, but argues further job cuts and cost saving measures are needed to balance the books.
00:43We agreed with council that we needed to take $250 million out of the recurring operating base of the university,
00:50which was a big shift for the university, but was the amount we needed so that we were no longer spending more than we were earning.
00:58The proposal announced today is for 59 jobs to go across three different divisions.
01:03Affected staff have a three week period to respond.
01:06Last year for instance we had multiple change plans and in each one of those instances the number of staff that was impacted changed and it became a smaller number in those plans.
01:17Others beg to differ.
01:19What we've seen in the past there's been very little variation between what's proposed and what actually happens.
01:24ANU leaders say it's still not clear exactly how courses and teaching will be affected, but they have to see the process through.
01:31Every piece of that progress we make makes a difference to the sustainability and the long term viability of the university.
01:38Some staff want the top brass to talk with them.
01:41I would be optimistic if we had a change of leadership at the very most senior level.
01:47Why is she talking to reporters and not talking to us?
01:50Further cost saving measures are expected to be announced by November.
