00:00A powerful cold front is bringing damaging wind gusts to much of southern Australia over the next few days.
00:06I'm Angus here at the Bureau of Meteorology, this is a severe weather update and today is Monday the 7th of July.
00:13We're going to start off in the south west because that is where the weather is arriving from.
00:17We can sort of see what's going on in our radar imagery.
00:19We've got showers over the south west but it's this band of slightly stronger heavier rainfall moving towards Perth,
00:25likely to reach Perth in a few hours time which is bringing the heavier rain.
00:29That is a cold front, it is bringing wet weather but most importantly it is bringing damaging wind gusts today
00:35for south western parts of the country then in the coming few days for other areas as well.
00:40Let's track how this cold front evolves over the next couple of days.
00:45So Monday morning it's through the south west, then by Monday evening it's making its way into the far west of South Australia.
00:51This thing is moving really really quickly across southern parts.
00:55We're going to see rain and wind pick up across South Australia overnight tonight through the early hours of Tuesday morning.
01:01Later on Tuesday this is now through Victoria, Tasmania, southern parts of New South Wales.
01:06All of these areas are getting some rainfall but it is really the wind that I want to hammer home as being the key point for potential severe weather.
01:14So we're going to watch that again, this time we are only focused on the wind and in fact we're looking at the winds above the surface.
01:20Gives us a good idea of the atmospheric wind flow.
01:22We will see strong winds reflected at the surface as well.
01:26Really looking for these orange and red areas to show us the strongest winds.
01:29So through Monday southern WA, overnight tonight we see very strong winds building around South Australia.
01:35And then no surprise, tomorrow Tuesday starts to focus on the south east of the country.
01:40This has prompted our expert forecast teams to issue a number of severe weather warnings for damaging winds.
01:46There's quite a few of them affecting four different states.
01:49Let's go through it state by state and we'll do it chronologically as well.
01:52That means we are starting in the west.
01:54We've got damaging winds in play for southwestern parts of WA from Perth around to Esperance.
02:00We could see wind gusts here of about 90 to 100 kilometres an hour through the day on Monday.
02:05Should be clearing most areas by Monday night but could linger around Esperance in parts of this south eastern corner into early Tuesday morning.
02:15Across to the south east of the country now, South Australia.
02:18We'll see those winds pick up overnight really.
02:19It's between midnight and 6am when the damaging winds kick in here.
02:23Might be hard to see at this scale but the warning does not cover Adelaide.
02:27It does include the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east up to the Flinders Ranges as well.
02:31Parts of the peninsulas, the islands and then the southeast coast down towards Mount Gambia.
02:36Victoria will see the strongest winds there develop during Tuesday morning by lunchtime.
02:42Really whistling across the ranges of Victoria including the Grampians, the central ranges up towards the northeast Alps.
02:48And there's a very very small warning area.
02:49Can't really make it out here but it's over the tip of the Mornington Peninsula.
02:53So anyone down the peninsula also in line for a very windy day on Tuesday.
02:58Finally New South Wales, the last spot to get the wind but it will be very very strong when it does arrive.
03:04About 100km augusts across the southern Alps of New South Wales, the snowy mountains.
03:09Up towards the central tablelands as well even as far north as Sydney or perhaps the Hunter Mountains inland.
03:15So really windy there.
03:16This is coming later in the day Tuesday through the afternoon into the evening and probably into Wednesday morning.
03:22So across all of these windy warning areas, what are some of the impacts we could see?
03:26Well it does boil down to a few things.
03:28Potential for wind damage.
03:29Now obviously branches and trees are some of the main things that can succumb to that damage.
03:33But I suspect we'll see a little bit of damage to property as well.
03:36That could be things being blown around the garden.
03:38Your rubbish bin could run away.
03:39The trampoline, the fence could get blown down.
03:42Maybe there'll be a few roof panels getting blown off as well.
03:45Travel and transport delays look likely both in the air and on the ground.
03:49And there's a potential for some dangerous driving conditions.
03:52Particularly in tall vehicles like caravans.
03:54Or for anyone driving over high mountain alpine passes where the wind is often the strongest.
04:00Alongside the wind we will see some rain.
04:02Not enough to be involved in the warnings but a burst of wet weather nonetheless.
04:06Between 10 and 25mm for many.
04:08In the southwest, across much of South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania as well.
04:12The strongest or the heaviest rainfall I should say.
04:15Probably along this coastline here, the Limestone Coast in the far southeast of South Australia.
04:20Where we could see over 50mm in the next couple of days.
04:23And the final thing worth mentioning in this severe weather update is the wind over the water
04:28will be generating some absolutely massive waves across all southern coastlines from Perth.
04:33Right here around to the southern Victoria coastline.
04:365 to 7 metre waves coming through.
04:38When a couple of different pulses for these areas going to hammer those coastlines.
04:42Potentially bring some coastal erosion.
04:45And at high tide time we could be seeing some elevated tidal levels.
04:49So throw that in the mix and it's possible that we'll get some inundation around the high tides.
04:53Particularly for parts of the South Australia gulfs and along the Victoria coast.
04:57A little bit of inundation of seawater at high tide for low lying areas like walkways, car parks,
05:03bike paths and potentially a few roads and a little bit of property.
05:08A very windy week lies ahead.
05:09These warnings will be updated, maintained and analysed throughout the week.
05:13So if you'd ever like to see the latest warning information.
05:16You can do just that on the Bureau's website and app.
