00:00EU imports of liquefied natural gas are rising sharply, is that good news?
00:11The first quarter of 2025 marked a significant shift in EU gas imports.
00:17For the first time, the block seems to be importing more liquefied natural gas than pipeline gas.
00:24LNG imports jumped by 12%, pushing related spending up by 45%.
00:31The EU used to rely heavily on the Russian pipeline, but that changed dramatically after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
00:40In 2025, the US is the EU's biggest LNG supplier, making up just over half of the import value, followed by Russia and Qatar.
00:52LNG comes with higher upfront operational costs, due to the whole process involving liquefied, shipping, delivering and regasifying the product.
01:03Plus, its carbon footprint is nearly 67% larger than pipeline gas.
01:10Another study says its carbon footprint is even 33% worse than coal.
01:16That said, the International Energy Agency claims there's room to bring down emissions by about 60% by reducing leaks and flaring, as well as using carbon capture.
